Every spring, seventh graders across the United States apply for the Caroline D. Bradley (CDB) Scholarship. The four-year scholarship allows students to attend the high school of their choice. Between 25 and 30 seventh graders are chosen yearly by the Institute for Educational Advancement (IEA), which manages the program. After 18 years at the Institute, Bonnie Raskin, the CDB Scholarship program director, is retiring.
“Watching kids grow up and develop is what inspires me and my workmates at the IEA,” Raskin told me during a recent interview by video.
The IEA, which is based in Pasadena, California, is a public organization. Its goal is to meet the needs of gifted students across the country. For generations of CDB Scholars, Raskin has served as an experienced advisor and role model. She, in turn, is proud of the students who are able to find a right path they truly love.
“It takes a lot of determination to try something new,” Raskin said. She sees value in starting out as “a generalist (多面手) rather than an expert”, and trying to explore the unknown world.
Before joining the IEA, Raskin was a television producer. She said that the role helped her strengthen her communication skills. “You have an opportunity to do lots of different things in your lifetime,” Raskin told me. “You can take skills from one place and apply them to another.”
Raskin is also an animal lover. In her spare time, she works with Wags and Walks, a group that helps shelter dogs find homes.
Raskin hopes that more students will apply for the CDB Scholarship, which opens doors for gifted students and helps them achieve success. For seventh graders interested in applying, the application deadline is April 10 of this year.
4. What do we know about Bonnie Raskin
A. She is a gifted person. B. She will stop doing her job.
C. She set up the CDB Scholarship. D. She once applied for the Scholarship.
5. What’s the purpose of the IEA
A. To help students with their learning problems.
B. To provide help for students with certain talent.
C. To encourage students to choose their favorite subject.
D. To enable poor students to complete high school education.
6. How did the role as a television producer influence Raskin
A. It inspired her to explore the unknown world.
B. It led her to be an expert in education.
C. It made her brave enough to deal with strangers.
D. It equipped her with better communication skills.
7. What does the last paragraph intend to do

The polonaise is a traditional Polish dance that is being honored by the United Nations. On December 5, the polonaise entered UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The U.N. organization noted that the dance represents cooperation (合作), understanding, and equality.
The dance is believed to have started in the 18th century. It has been performed at parties for the rich and powerful and at village celebrations. The dance developed from a traditional form called the “walking dance”. By the 18th century, it had become popular at honorable European balls, or dance parties.
In Poland, the polonaise has now become the opening dance at high school pre-graduation balls. The American space agency NASA has sent up a new satellite (卫星) designed to closely study the world’s oceans and atmosphere.
The satellite will spend at least three years studying the environment from 676 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. The satellite will map the entire world each day with two pieces of science equipment. A third one will glean monthly measurements. Scientists should start getting their first data within one or two months.
A major goal of the research is to help scientists improve their ability to predict (预测) hurricanes and other terrible weather events. The equipment can provide detailed data on temperature-related changes happening across the world. The satellite data might help scientists better predict when harmful algae (海藻) overgrowth will happen.
The satellite will also study aerosols (气溶胶) in the air. The study of aerosols is important because they can affect clouds. Aerosols can affect the thickness of clouds, as well as when and how much rainfall the clouds might drop.
Existing satellites can’t collect detailed data on aerosols. The new satellite will help researchers learn more about how aerosols affect clouds and climate over long periods. The new data is expected to provide scientists with detailed information on how aerosols affect the ocean and atmosphere.
There is a relationship between the aerosols and phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are very small plants that float near the surface of water. They serve as food for many sea creatures, ranging from shellfish to whales.
The satellite’s equipment will measure changes in phytoplankton. The satellite will collect data on aerosols attached to phytoplankton. These studies will be important in recognizing any changes in phytoplankton from interactions (相互影响) with aerosols which could affect the ocean and life in it.
The current Earth-observing satellites can only see in seven or eight different colors. But the new satellite will see in 200 colors, allowing scientists to better know about different kinds of algae in the sea and particles in the air.
12. What does the underlined word “glean” mean in paragraph 2
A. Collect. B. Recover. C. Influence. D. Question.
13. What is a main target of the research
A. To know the influence of aerosols.
B. To observe the water quality in the ocean.
C. To let scientists better predict natural disasters.
D. To make people more aware of the atmosphere protection.
14. Which is affected by aerosols according to the text
A. The amount of rainwater. B. The overgrowth of algae.
C. The temperature of the ocean. D. The spread of certain diseases.
15. What do we know about phytoplankton
A. They protect aerosols very well. B. They can take on over 200 colors.
C. They are important for sea animals. D. They can’t be observed by previous satellites.

On a flight from Atlanta to Seattle, Alaska Airlines flight worker Amber May came across an unexpected and unusual request that saw her go above and beyond her normal duties.

Six of Zoo Atlanta’s valuable Chilean flamingo (火烈鸟) eggs were on their way to Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo on the plane, where a zoo official placed them in a moveable warm box.
However, unfortunately, during the flight to Seattle, the zoo official found that the warm box stopped working without knowing what the reason was. As a result, the temperature inside the container was dropping fast. If the temperature continued to drop, this would put the eggs at risk. If the problem was not solved, these valuable eggs would never turn into young birds.
The zoo official was so worried that he first tried to repair the warm box by himself, but he was not a repairman after all. No matter how hard he tried, the warm box just wouldn’t work. He had also wanted to contact his colleagues at the zoo to ask for a solution, but he was on the plane and he couldn’t make a call. He realized that he was indeed in trouble.
And all of a sudden, he had a brainstorm. He thought of the workers on the plane, and immediately pressed the call button. He asked Amber May if she could find a way to help keep the eggs warm.
In response to this request Amber May broadcast (广播) to find someone who can provide help. And after that, Amber May worked positively with the zoo official to think of other solutions. By filling rubber gloves with warm water, Amber created a place to keep the eggs comfortable and protected them from the coldness on the plane.

Nineteen-year-old Kosmal was among the students at one of Warsaw’s high schools who performed the polonaise this month. She pointed out that although there are conflicts (冲突) between students, they come together when they dance the polonaise. “It’s an amazing moment,” she said.
The polonaise is regularly performed during national anniversaries (纪念日), including the November 11 Independence Day. On this day, people are invited to dance in the streets with officials. Natalia Berna is an 18-year-old student who took part in a large street dance in the central city of Lodz last month. She said the polonaise unites people at a time when the community needs it. She added that it is important to keep the tradition alive.
The leader of the Lodz street dance, Janusz Wielgosz, said the polonaise gives people beautiful enjoyment. “It is a dance that is really very simple, with beautiful music and beautiful costumes. It is worth a try,” he said.

D To make people more aware of the atmosphere protection.
14. Which is affected by aerosols according to the text
A. The amount of rainwater. B. The overgrowth of algae.
C The temperature of the ocean. D. The spread of certain diseases.
15. What do we know about phytoplankton
A. They protect aerosols very well. B. They can take on over 200 colors.
