2024年初中英语中考最新时文阅读训练 专题02人与自我
I stepped on the red carpet and smiled as the cameras rushed up to take pictures. I slowly walked into the large hall of my first Hollywood show. I had designed the special effects (效果) for the hottest movie on the market. Later, a friend of mine came with a big smile on her face. “I’m sure you have never thought that you would be here,” she said excitedly. I smiled back in return.
Having never had great chances, I’ve worked long and hard to create a bright future. Though I grew up in a poor family, I never doubted that my future would be connected with computers. Back in middle school, I was the producer of a daily news television show.
My goal became possible when a new high school in our town held a technology program created for students interested in technology-related jobs. Through the program I was able to learn about computer design and gain experience through a part-time job in a local computer company. Whenever a new movie came out, I would find out the company which created the special effects for the movies. At the same time, I searched for jobs on the Internet. The companies on the Internet usually require certain kinds of degrees. I planned on studying Computer Science.
While following my dream, I also took part in a large number of daily activities to broaden my view on life. I worked hard in school to develop my mind. I communicated with people who could give me advice about any problem I might meet along the way. And now, after years of preparation, my hard work is paying off. I know I have succeeded because I put my goal into action.

Over the years I have been interested to read about studies into the power of touch. A study found that holding hands to comfort a loved one can actually reduce their pain. Through a process that’s not fully understood, if one of them is in pain, the pain appears to reduce.
I’ve seen this so many times when the husband or wife of a patient in discomfort reaches out and holds their hand, and as if by magic, in a few minutes they become less painful. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, as we have known for many years about the importance of touch. It symbolizes safety and love.
The value of touch was proved by a series of experiments on monkeys back in the 1950s by Harry Harlow, an American scientist. His work showed the unbelievable drive for warmth and intimacy (亲密) that we all have. In his experiments, he gave young monkeys a choice between a “mother” made of wire mesh (铁丝网) that had a ready supply of milk and the other a warm, soft mother that did not provide any food. They chose, to everyone’s surprise, the comfort over food. This was unexpected because it had always been thought that food was the main motivator (动力) for living creatures. Yet this appeared to show that it was not food, but being comforted and intimate, that was the most important thing. He described these experiments as a study of love and they showed for the first time how important the feeling of being loved is to us. And his idea has been supported by countless further scientific studies.
Personally I find this so comforting. For me, this really speaks of the power of love.

We each have a memory(记忆力). That’s why we can still remember things after a long time. A good memory is a great help in learning languages. Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child. He hears the sounds, remembers them and then he learns to speak. Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries. They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day. Memory Bears

Macinnes, who studied fashion technology at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, says that she made her first memory bear for a friend when she was just 16 years old. She quickly became flooded with people’s requests for their own Memory Bear, but she always turned them down because she wanted to focus on her studies. The bears have become so popular. Macinnes says that she now has a month-long waiting list. Although working with such materials may not always be an easy job, Macinnes says that her job has also been rewarding.
“I really enjoy meeting my customers when they collect bears—80% burst into tears,” she said. “I think that’s because clothes arrive as sad reminders of the past then it’s almost as if new life is breathed into them.
