Every year when spring arrives, Dad announces it’s time to visit my uncle’s sugar forest. This year, I invited my good friend Jasmine.
“To a sugar forest ” she asked. “Is there really a forest where sugar grows ” Her questions were funny, but I understood her confusion. She’s from Africa and there aren’t maple(枫树) trees. “Well, not exactly,” I explained. “But there is a certain kind of tree used to make sugar. It’s called a maple tree.”
That Saturday morning, Jasmine and I were very excited. As we drove along, Dad explained to Jasmine how to make maple sugar, “In Canada, for a few weeks in spring, there is a special liquid (液体)in maple trees. It’s 97.5 percent of water and the remaining 2.5 percent is natural sugars. To make maple sugar, you hang a bucket (桶) on a maple tree and make a small hole in the tree to catch the liquid. If you boil it long enough, it turns into brown sugar.”
When we arrived, my uncle was making maple sugar in a big pot over a big fire. By the end of the day, there were big cans of sweet maple syrup (糖浆). What Jasmine really loved was when my uncle put some hot syrup on the snow and it turned into candy. As we ate our maple candy, we walked in the forest, stopping to look at the buckets that my uncle had hung on the trees. Jasmine said, “I can hardly wait to tell my grandparents in Africa about this.”

If you walk into a shop, strange enough, you can not see any shopkeepers inside. You pick up things and prepare to wait in line and pay. But even more oddly, there isn’t a cashier either. What happened to this shop
Well, you may have entered Tao Café, a cashless(无现金的) shop created by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. In July, 2017 the public got to see the shop for the first time at Alibaba’s Taobao Maker Festival in Hangzhou.
The 200-square-metre shop sells drinks, fast food and snacks. To enter the shop, people only need a smartphone with Taobao app and an Alipay account(支付宝账号).
By scanning the QR code(扫二维码) at the door, shoppers are let in and followed by cameras. When shoppers pick up something they need, the system(系统)will be able to “watch” and “remember” the things.
When shoppers are ready to leave, they don’t have to wait in line to pay. Instead, they just go through two checkout doors. Then the bills will be paid with the Taobao account connected to Alipay.
According to Alibaba, the checkout machines can check goods(商品) even when shoppers put them in pockets or bags. So it is almost impossible for shoppers to steal(偷窃) things.
Tao Café is not the only cashless shop in China. A 24-hour convenience shop with no shopkeepers called BingoBox opened in Shanghai in June, 2017. To enter the shop, shoppers need to scan a QR code with WeChat or Alipay. But they have to scan another QR code to leave the BingoBox.

Everyone likes people with good manners. He always treats people kindly. He is kind to the animals too. When people are waiting in line for a bus, or in a cinema, he always waits for his turn politely. He does not push in before others. If he bumps into someone in the street, or someone gets in his way, he says“ Sorry” or “ Excuse me” .
He says “Please” when asking for help and “Thank you” when he receives something from other people . He usually stands up when he talks to a lady or an elder person, and he does not sit down until the other person is seated. He does not cut in on other people while they are talking. He does not talk too much about himself. He does not talk loudly in public places.
However, people in different countries have different manners. Before entering a house in some Asian countries it is necessary to take off one’s shoes. In Europe , even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. A guest in a Chinese house never finishes a drink, he leaves some to show that he has had enough.
