I enjoy being alone. I go to the movies alone. I wander museums alone. I eat meals alone. I sit in coffee shops and get lost in thought. I take the train and go to new towns and walk around alone.
You’re probably thinking that I must be pretty strange and very lonely. Interestingly enough, I was more lonely before I started spending time alone. The feeling like I needed to be around people all the time was loneliness. The feeling of complete anxiety and fear when a boyfriend broke up with me was loneliness. But being alone This is peace. This is fun. This is what self-esteem (自尊) is built of.
For the past year, I’ve been single by choice, not by circumstance, not because no one will ask me out or I can’t find anyone eligible (合适的). It’s hard for some people to believe that I am choosing not to date, and I often get strange and confused looks from my old aunt and college friends alike.
I’m not the slightest bit embarrassed to say out loud that I’ve been choosing to be alone and it’s been the most nurturing (滋养的), sustainable, and non-anxiety including relationship I’ve ever had. There’s no waiting to be texted back, and there’s no feeling like another person just doesn’t understand me.
That doesn’t mean I don’t plan on bonding with others in future — I definitely do. But I know now that the relationship I’ve built with myself is a model for the relationship I want to be in. I know now that I’m not going into the relationship as a half. I’m going in as a whole.

Coffee helps millions get going. Now a company called Bio-bean wants it to get buses going too. Arthur Kay is the founder.
The company collects waste coffee grounds (渣滓) from all across the UK, from thousands of different outlets and then turns those waste coffee grounds in the factory in Cambridgeshire into advanced biofuels. The United Kingdom produces half a million tons of coffee grounds per year. Most are thrown away. Bio-bean gets grounds from everywhere from coffee shops to instant coffee factories. They extract (提炼) the oil to use as part of a 20% bio-diesel blend (生物柴油混合物). And the real driver for this is to make a fuel that’s usable with an existing engine. So the key with Bio-bean is to deliver fuels that can work at scale today.
London’s bus network is partly fueled by bio-diesel blends made from cooking oil and animal fat to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Bio-bean’s contribution is modest. It has produced enough to run one bus for a year on 20% coffee oil. It is just a start.
If you got all the waste of coffee grounds in London, it’d be enough to power about one third of London’s bus networks, which can be a significant contribution, but it’s not going to solve everything in one go. Kay hopes to eventually produce 100% coffee-based bio-diesel and he would like to take the technology global. Coffee is one of the world’s most popular drinks and millions of tonnes of waste coffee grounds have been produced and wasted every year. So Bio-bean wants to work with companies to save money and importantly save CO2 emissions.
So your morning jolt can fuel both you and your ride to work.
8.What does Bio-bean turn waste coffee grounds into
A. Cooking oil. B. Biofuels. C. Coffee additives. D. High quality fat.
9.What achievement has Bio-bean made so far
A. They recycle all the coffee grounds in the UK.
B. They reduce London’s gas emissions by one third.
C. They save coffee shops in the UK millions of dollars.
D. They produce coffee oil for one bus to operate for a year.
10.What’s Arthur Kay’s attitude toward Bio-bean’s efforts
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Defensive.
11.What does the underlined word “jolt” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Bus. B. Coffee. C. Bio-bean. D. Coffee grounds.
We’ve long heard of the saying: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. But now, researchers have discovered a pear a day keeps the pounds away. A new study found that pears are associated with lower body weight.
People who consume pears are 35% less likely to be obese (肥胖的), scientists discovered. The study also found that pear consumption is associated with higher diet quality. Pears are an “excellent source” of fiber, in addition to being a good source of vitamin C. A single medium pear contains nearly 24% the daily fiber recommendations — and is only 100 calories.
Researchers from Louisiana State University looked at data from 2001 to 2010 for the study. They used a nationally representative sample to analyse the association of fresh pear consumption with nutrient intake, nutrient adequacy, diet quality and cardiovascular (心血管的) risk factors in adults. Dr Carol O’Neil, who led the study said, “The association between pears and lower weight is very exciting. We believe fiber intake may have driven the lower body weights that were seen in this study.” She added, “There was no difference in energy intake or level of physical activity found between the fresh pear consumers and non-consumers.”
According to the USDA Guidelines for Americans, people who eat more fruit as part of an overall healthy diet are more likely to reduce their risk of chronic diseases (慢性病), But the researchers noted that little has been published on the health outcomes associated with individual fruits—including pears. However, the USA Pear Bureau said it is continuing to cooperate with researchers to carry out additional studies to show the relationship between pears and positive health outcomes.
12.Why is a saying quoted in paragraph 1
A. To introduce the variety of apples. B. To emphasize the nutrition of apples.
C. To emphasize the popularity of pears. D. To introduce the discussion about pears
13.Why are pears associated with lower body weight
A. They are rich in fiber.
B. They are a good source of vitamin C.
C. They result in higher level of physical activity.
D. They help increase people’s daily energy intake.
14.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Americans have an overall healthy diet.
B. There aren’t enough studies on chronic diseases
C. The USA Pear Bureau is studying individual fruits.
D. The pear-and-health relationship is still under research.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Fruit: A Multifunctional Food
B. Fruit Intake and Physical Activity
C. Pear: A Driver to Lower Body Weight
D. A Pear a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

六、读后续写
34.Leo Ajayi, aged 15, and Jim Green, aged 14, were good friends. Every autumn the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents (帐篷), the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain nearby on their own next morning and promised their parents to return before dark
Early the following day, the friends set off with a bag packed with food and water. Along the winding path, they admired a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was
Having got enough rest, Leo and Jim decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Jim fell three metres off the side of the path. Leo climbed down to where Jim was and found him badly injured and not able to move
“Help!” Leo shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Leo almost cried. But still no replies. “If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Leo thought, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Jim was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Jim’s face and hands, and then tried to help Jim stand up, but Jim’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Leo gave Jim his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Leo used an extra shirt to keep Jim warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive.

34.答案:
Feeling low, Jim told Leo to leave him alone and go back himself. But Leo still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Jim to be alone on such a cold, windy night. Cold autumn wind made Leo shivering. Disappointment welled up inside him. Leo knew he had to do something other than staying still. Weighing the pros and cons, Leo finally decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, Leo carried Jim on his back and they started the long climb back to the campsite. But the mountainous path was even tougher and more rocky for Leo to climb down, let alone Jim was on his back.
Seeing this, Jim asked Leo to leave him alone again. Leo felt a surge of bitterness and shook his head without a word. Suddenly, a beam of light flashed. Great joy consumed them and Leo shouted his loudest “help”. Out came a park worker with a flashlight, who was searching for the boys. With the help of the worker, they were rescued and reunited with their concerned parents. “I will always remember what Leo did for me,” said Jim afterwards. “He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”
