2024年中考英语复习拔高特训之 阅读理解之记叙文(山西省)
A
Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.
I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner’s dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes.” So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the “real” firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.
Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.
Here, I would offer this reminder: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now.
Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

Buck’s first day in the frozen Northland was terrible. Every hour there was filled with shock and frightening surprise. Here was neither peace, nor rest, nor a moment’s safety—only endless noise and movement. At every moment life itself was in danger, because these dogs and men were not town dogs and men. They knew only the law of club and tooth.
Buck had never seen dogs fight like these dogs: they were like wolves. He learnt this from his friend Curly. She tried to make friends with a big dog. But without warning, the dog jumped on Curly. Curly’s face was torn open from eye to mouth. And the fight did not finish then. More dogs ran up and made a circle around the fight, watching silently. Curly tried to attack the dog who had bitten her. He bit her a second time, and jumped away. When Curly tried to attack again, he knocked her backwards. And she fell on the ground. Curly never stood up, and this was what the other dogs were waiting for. In a moment, she was under a crowd of dogs. Then Francois and other men with clubs jumped in among the dogs. Soon the dogs were chased away. But Curly lay dead in the snow, her body torn almost to pieces. Curly’s death often came back to Buck in his dreams. He understood that once a dog was down on the ground, he was dead.
That night Buck discovered a problem. Where was he going to sleep He found Francois was in the tent. Buck followed him quietly. But when he went in and wanted to sleep in the corner, Francois shouted angrily and beat him with a club. Buck ran out and walked around the tent, very,
very cold, wondering what to do. Suddenly, the snow under his feet fell in, and he felt something move. He jumped back, waiting for the attack, but heard only a friendly bark. There, in a warm hole under the snow, was Billee. So he knew what he could do. _______. He slept well, although his dreams were bad.
In the north, Buck was learning the law of club and tooth. He learnt to eat any food—anything that he could get his teeth into. He learnt to break the ice on water holes with his feet when he wanted to drink. He learnt to travel through the forest and kill for meat with wild dogs. He was stronger, and could see and smell better than ever before. It was easy for him to learn to fight like a wolf, because it was in his blood.
6.Buck’s first day in the frozen Northland, what was there filled with

Zara Rutherford, a nineteen-year-old British-Belgian pilot, has set a new world record for being the youngest woman to fly alone around the world. She covered 51,000 kilometers over 52 countries and five continents(大洲) on her journey that started on August 18, 2022. The flight was supposed to take three months. But bad weather and visa delays(签证延误) kept her grounded and made the trip last longer by about two months. Rutherford landed her small plane back in western Belgium on Thursday.
Rutherford started in Belgium and headed west over Britain, Iceland, and Greenland. The path took her over Canada, the United States, and Latin America. Rutherford could not leave Alaska(阿拉斯加州) for a month because of weather and visa delays. A winter storm forced another long stop in the Russian Far East before she traveled to Korea, Indonesia, India, the Middle East, and back to Europe.
Rutherford had to land on two points opposite each other on Earth, Jambi in Indonesia and Tumaco in Colombia, to meet the requirements for a round-the-world flight. She said that the last part of her trip, from Germany, was difficult because of heavy rain and snow. But she was happy to be accompanied(陪伴) by the Belgian Air Force’s Red Devils team before landing.
Rutherford said she has been traveling in small planes with her pilot parents since she was six. She gained her pilot’s license in 2020 and after several months’ further training, she started flying all by herself when her 17th birthday came. Rutherford dreams of being an astronaut. She hopes her trip will get more women interested in science, technology, and aviation(航空).
On her website, Rutherford wrote that young boys are often taught to be scientists, astronauts, CEOs, or presidents through toys, history classes, movies, and street names. Many of the guests flew planes. “I must have expressed some yearning (渴望),” she says, because someone told her, “You should join the flying club!” The next day, Narayanswami, who was 57 at the time, arranged to meet a coach. “No building comes without carvings (雕刻), and carvings make buildings more valuable,” goes an old saying in Minnan (闽南), an area in southern Fujian Province. The saying refers to brick carvings, which were an important feature of the old red brick buildings in the area.
The carvings were once commonly found on either side of the main entrance of Minnan’s buildings. However, with development, the number of ancient red brick buildings has decreased, and Minnan’s brick carvings have gradually faded from sight, said Wu Jiandong, a young master brick carver from Fujian’s Quanzhou City.
The 42-year-old has learned the traditional technique and now combines it with modern tastes to develop his own style of brick carving. Wu said that he hoped to be able to help the traditional craft continue through innovation.

When Narayanswami was invited to a dinner by a friend who worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, she was excited. Many of the guests flew planes. “I must have expressed some yearning (渴望),” she says, because someone told her, “You should join the flying club!” The next day, Narayanswami, who was 57 at the time, arranged to meet a coach. I said, “Am I too old ” He said, “We’ve got students in their 80s.”
Narayanswami grew up in Southhall, west London, and at grammar school suffered terrible racist bullying (种族歧视). The library provided shelter (庇护) for her. But as she reached her late teens, she felt family stress for an arranged marriage. “I’m really against it,” she says. “But I
want to be an astronaut! My mother made a promise, ‘If you get an education, we will not look for a husband for you.’ ” ① Narayanswami studied biology at Leicester University, then did a PhD (博士) at St. Andrew.
After that, she did postdoctoral(博士后) research at the University of California. “I didn’t feel I would be able to get away unless I did that.” she says. ② In 2020, aged 64, Narayanswami finished 423 flight hours she needed to get her pilot’s licence. Then she sent applications to NASA’s astronaut companies, but was always refused politely.

“Come on, Simon,” said Gabe. “Let’s try out new saucers (滑雪盘)!” But it seemed that Simon didn’t want to go.
“I’m not ready,” Simon said.
“What’s to get ready ” Gabe asked.
Simon wanted to say “What if the other kids laugh if I mess up ” But he said nothing.
“You’re going to miss a lot of fun,” Gabe said.
“Go with your brother, Simon,” said Mom. “He will show you how to do it.”
The brothers walked up the hill, where kids were taking turns on saucers, shrieking all the way down. Simon couldn’t tell if their cries meant they were happy or terrified (恐惧的). He knew which one he felt. Gabe was taking the steps two at a time. “Come on!” he called to Simon.

Seeing his older brother’s face, Simon calmed down. Gabe had helped Simon learn to ride a bike. The first day Simon was at his new school, Gabe had drawn a map that showed where to find the lunchroom, the gym, and the bus area.
Simon knew Gabe wanted to fly down the hill without him.
“Are you going or not ” a girl behind him said.
Simon took a deep breath. “I’m going. By myself.”
“Good for you, Simon,” Gabe said.
Simon sat on the saucer, with his heart beating fast. Gabe gave him a push on the back. Suddenly, he was rushing down the hill wildly. He couldn’t stop. Faster and faster he went. He couldn’t even shout out.
The ground leveled off (平坦). Simon’s saucer slowed down and then came to a stop. He rolled (打滚) out and lay on his back, breathing hard.

“Simon, say something!” Gabe shouted again.

“No building comes without carvings (雕刻), and carvings make buildings more valuable,”
goes an old saying in Minnan (闽南), an area in southern Fujian Province.
“Market demands have changed in recent years, and so has our thinking, “Wu said. “We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop traditional crafts.”
People in Minnan love tea, so Wu created a series of carved brick tea decorations, including tea plates, cup holders, pot holders and other items, They have been warmly received by local people and foreign visitors.
Earlier this year, a pendant (挂件) decorated with a swallow, tail ridge (屋脊) and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philippines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architecture and the moon of his hometown.
Because of the market’s recognition of his work , Wu will be able to pass down the craft and further develop his pieces, and the popularity of short videos has also given him new hopes of promoting (推广) Minnan brick carvings.
