Over two thousand years ago, the Greek writer Plato wrote in dialogues about Atlantis, an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The island’s people were very rich. They built a big city with many great buildings. According to Plato, the royal palace was a wonder to see for its size and beauty. It sat on a perfectly round island, surrounded by rings of water and land. Gardens, golden temples, a horse-racing track, and fancy bath houses filled the island rings. Ships sailed in the circular waterways, bringing goods from all over the world. The whole place was filled with fruit and flowers. Wise kings ruled over happy people.
But the people became greedy — they had many things, but they still wanted more. So the gods became angry. With deadly earthquakes and floods, the island sank into the sea, never to be seen again.
Ever since, people wondered: was Atlantis a real place If Atlantis was real, where is it now
Many explorers have looked for Atlantis. In 2004, explorer Robert Sarmast reported finding the remains of a city under the sea near Cyprus. However, Sarmast and other scientists later realized the structures he found under the sea were not man-made. Mark Adams, author of the 2016 book Meet Me in Atlantis believes the city was in Morocco. Plato wrote about red and black stone circles around the city. Adams found similar red and black stones there, very near the Atlantic Ocean. But how could Atlantis be in the desert
Most people, however, think Atlantis is simply a story. Plato may have been inspired (赋予灵感) by a real place. About 1,500 B.C., a volcano erupted (火山爆发) on the Greek island of Santorini. It destroyed much of the island, though half is still there. Earthquakes and floods swept the nearby island of Crete.
As a boy, Plato probably heard tales of the Santorini eruption, although it happened long before he was born. He lived on an island and had experienced earthquakes. But his story of Atlantis was not meant as true history. He told it as a story designed to teach people not to be greedy. Still, he described it so vividly that his imaginary island continues to amaze us.

Honesty is valuable in the world. There are five qualities (特征) of honest people.
Honest people have no interest in competition for popularity. They don’t pay too much attention to what others think of them.
Honest people don’t go looking for fights, but they aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Honest people will express their opinions bravely even when their beliefs (信念) are against other people. While sometimes this may cause some trouble, most people respect honesty and admire those who stick to their beliefs.
Honest people don’t get angry easily. It requires a thick skin (不计较面子) to stay honest. Not all people love to hear the truth. When honest people tell the truth, other people may get angry. Honest people may be hurt by them so that they need to have thick skin.
Honest people often have long, deep friendships. Their friends know that they won’t discuss them behind their back, and will instead deal with problems in a direct way. This allows for deeper, healthier relationships.

You can still purchase even if there is no money in your credit card. But there is a limit to how much money you can charge with your credit card. At the same time, the credit card company sends you a bill each month, telling your payment for the month. If you don’t pay, you will receive a warning. If you don’t or can’t pay off the debts, you even will be put into prison.
People with no credit history can get such a credit card as a way to start to build up their credit. You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river.” The main route of the Yangtze is almost 6,400 km long. As the world’s third-longest river, it covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone (长江经济带) covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about two-fifths of China’s total population and GDP.
On December 26, China passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which took effect on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.
The “mother river” is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, because of overfishing and water pollution, the river’s Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) has died out after surviving for 150 million years. Hanfu
Hanfu is the oldest of China’s traditional clothes. Legend traces it back (追溯) to over 4,000 years ago when Huangdi’s wife, Leizu, made cloth with silk. It was kept improving till the Han Dynasty, when Hanfu was made and strongly promoted (推销) by the rulers. It also had a far-reaching influence on neighboring Asian countries, such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

Later on, after Chairman Mao had been seen wearing it in public many times, this type of clothes got another name— the Mao suit.

The Tang suit often refers to a type of Chinese jacket rather than the clothing of the Tang Dynasty. This name came from the overseas Chinese. As the Tang Dynasty was famous for being rich and powerful in the world, foreigners called the overseas Chinese people “the Tang people” and the clothes they wore were called “the Tang suit”, also known as Tangzhuang.
The Cheongsam
The Cheongsam developed from the Manchu women’s Changpao of the Qing Dynasty. The Manchu people were also called the Qi people by the Han people; so their Changpao was named qipao.
Generally, the top-bottom clothes, made up of an yi (the upper clothes) and a chang (the lower clothes), were the earliest form of clothing recorded in Chinese documents.

A credit card is a plastic card that you can use to purchase(购买) items instead of paying in cash. The credit card company charges the store owner a small percentage fee for the service.
Having a credit card is a convenient way to purchase goods. You do not have to carry money, since most stores accept credit cards. The store pays the credit card company 2% for the service. If you have your money in your card, that’s good. If you don’t have your own money, you can build up a debt(债务) on your purchases that you must pay off at a later date.
When checking out with items you want to purchase, you or the shopkeeper scans the credit card through a machine that can check the validity(有效性) of the card. A magnetic(磁性的) strip on the card provides the machine with information about the card. If your credit card has been stolen or used without your permission(许可), you must tell your credit card company right away.
If they have a good job with a company that has a credit union, they just need to apply to the organization and then get one right away. People can also go to banks, stores and other organizations to get a credit card only by proving that you are able to pay.

There’re also desertified (荒漠化的) land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province.
The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans (禁止) on activity that could damage the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law.
According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.
Sand mining (采沙) will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource. However, the water levels on this river have dropped because of this, which has made the river’s water quality become worse.
Companies operating along the river will need to focus on green panies
that produce dangerous chemicals will be moved to other places, the law says.

Each country in the world has its own traditional clothes, which show us the country’s traditional aesthetics (美学), philosophy (哲学), and social values in special ways. Here are the four most well-known types of traditional Chinese clothing.
The Zhongshan suit
The Zhongshan suit, also known as the Mao suit in the world, is a type of male clothes. Women seldom wore it. It was first advocated (提倡) by Sun Zhongshan in 1912, so it was called the Zhongshan suit. Later on, after Chairman Mao had been seen wearing it in public many times, this type of clothes got another name— the Mao suit.
The Tang suit
The one-piece clothing was called shenyi. The upper and the lower clothes were made as one piece although they were cut separately.
