A
As I stand in my favorite craft store, I’m faced with choices that mirror the world outside. You see, I love my foam (泡沫橡胶) board, which has foam inside and is sandwiched between two layers of paper or plastic. It’s easy to work with and affordable, but not friendly to the environment. Or take a look at the paintbrushes. The plastic handle brushes are cheap while the brushes with wooden handles cost a fair bit more.
Glues are the unsung heroes of my art, yet their plastic containers are far from eco-friendly. And don’t get me started on the packaging that these art supplies come in. It’s all plastic, and it’s a reminder that even in the art world, being green isn’t always easy.
As an artist, I’m not exactly rolling in profits. Most of what I earn goes right back into my materials, leaving little room for choosing green materials. Fresh out of university, I am still searching for a job. Since I currently don’t have a regular income, I’m living with my family to save costs and paying careful attention to what I can afford. But I also care deeply about climate change, since I’ve seen its impact and can’t bear the thought of it getting worse.
So, to reduce my personal impact on climate change while also living within my means, I make full use of my brushes until they’re on their last hair, and I’ve become a master at repurposing cardboard boxes and various packing materials. The firm plastic packaging that once housed my paints finds a second purpose as glass in my miniature (微型的) windows. The cardboard from those boxes’ serves as bases for a range of miniatures. I don’t waste a bit of foam board either; it’s kept for crafting mini-books for my sets.
It’s an ongoing process—a journey of give and take. While I try to reduce my ecological footprint, I am also learning to balance practicality while enjoying creating my own art.
1. What does the author find in the craft store
A. Most materials aren’t as green as required.
B. It is difficult to buy cheap and green materials.

D. Her favorite green materials are always very popular.
2. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. The author is a struggling artist. B. The author likes working at home.
C. The author mainly uses green materials. D. The author creates art about climate change.
3. How does the author deal with her packing materials
A She sells them to buy books. B. She exchanges them for paints.
C. She gives them to a recycling company. D. She tries to reuse them in her artworks.
4. What is the best title for the text
A. My journey as a green artist B. My expectations of a green artist
C. My experience of picking green materials D. My exploration in crafting green artwork

Want to have a better sleep You may just need more noise. While that may sound strange, it is scientifically proven that certain types of noise can help you get some sleep. Thinking of it this way: When you are lying in bed, every single noise—from the creak of the bed to a whistle in your partner’s nose—may keep you awake. But some types of noise, specifically white, pink and Brown noise, can mask these sounds, creating a more harmonious background.
White noise contains sounds of all frequencies that humans can hear. But it comes across as a high-pitched buzz. That’s because of the way your ears hear it. Basically, your brain strengthens sounds in higher pitched frequencies. So while you may be hearing sounds from a variety of frequencies, the highest ones tend to drown the lower pitched notes.
Pink noise takes the human tendency to hear only some frequencies into account and balances out the noise so that sounds of all frequencies are heard equally. The higher the frequency, the more its volume is weakened. To your ears, the sound is deeper and softer than white noise.
In a study at China's Peking University, researchers found that when participants were exposed to either pink noise or no noise during nighttime sleep and naps, 75% reported more restful sleep with the pink noise. Brain activity monitors confirmed this, showing that participants had 23% more restful brain activity at night with pink noise and 45% more restful sleep during naps.
Brown noise takes this concept to the next level, further weakening higher frequency noise to produce an even deeper and richer sound. It’s not named after the color brown but rather after the botanist Robert Brown, who in the 1800s discovered random particle motion. Brown noise is similar to random particle motion in that the changes in sound signals from one moment to the next occur randomly.
When it comes right down to it, the color of noise that will help you sleep mostly is the one you like best. While pink noise and Brown noise are deeper and more balanced than white noise, your personal sleep preferences will dictate which one gives you the best sleep.
5. How can some noise help us have a better sleep
A. By making us think of some special colors. B. By confusing our brain with different colors.
C. By reducing the effects of disturbing sounds. D. By copying the sounds that we are familiar with.
6. What is special about white noise
A. It sounds louder than it really is. B. It leaves low-frequency sounds out.
C. It protects ears from high-pitched sounds. D. It makes sounds of all frequencies heard equally.
7. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 5
A. Brown noise and pink noise work in a similar way.
B. Brown noise was first discovered by Robert Brown.
C. People cannot have a good sleep without pink noise.
D. People benefit more from pink noise at night than in the daytime.
8. What does the underlined word “dictate” in the last paragraph most probably mean
A. Explain. B. Classify. C. Remind. D. Determine.
C
Migration (迁移) has become a flashpoint for debate in many countries. But research from the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) finds that it generates significant economic benefits and more effective integration (融合) of immigrants (移民) could increase those benefits.
Moving more labor to higher-productivity settings boosts global GDP. Immigrants of all skill levels contribute to this effect, whether through entrepreneurship (创业) or through freeing up natives for higher-value work. In fact, immigrants make up just 3. 4 percent of the world’s population, but MGI’ research finds that they contribute nearly 10 percent of global GDP. They contributed roughly $6.7 trillion to global GDP in 2015 — some $3 trillion more than they would have produced in their origin countries. Developed nations realize more than 90 percent of this effect.
Employment rates are slightly lower for immigrants than for native workers in top destinations, but this varies by skill level and by region of origin. Wide-ranging academic evidence shows that immigration does not harm native employment or wages, although there can be short-term negative effects if there is a large inflow of immigrants to a small region, if immigrants are close substitutes (代替者) for native workers, or if the destination economy is experiencing a downturn.
Realizing the benefits of immigration depends on how well new arrivals are integrated into their destination country’s labor market and into society. Today immigrants tend to earn 20 to 30 percent less than native-born workers. But if countries narrow that wage gap to just 5 to 10 percent by integrating immigrants more effectively across various aspects of education, housing, health, and community engagement, they could generate an additional boost of $800 billion to $1 trillion to worldwide economic output annually. This is a relatively conservative goal, but it can produce broader positive effects, including lower poverty rates and higher overall productivity in destination economies.
The stakes are high. The success or failure of integration can last many years, influencing whether second-generation immigrants become fully participating citizens who reach their full potential or remain in a poverty trap.
9. What is the purpose of this text
A. To give a definition. B. To explain a phenomenon.
C. To introduce a research. D. To report a finding.
10. Immigration won’t cause negative effects to native workers in the short term if ______.
A. immigrants set up their own businesses
B. immigrants work as replacements for native workers
C. a large number of immigrants flood into a certain area
D. the destination country is suffering from economic depression
11. On what basis does immigration benefit the society
A. How skilled immigrants are.
B. How much immigrants make up the local population.
C. How good the destination economy is.
D. How integrated immigrants are into local society.
12. In the last paragraph, the author says “The stakes are high” to emphasize the importance of ______.
A. immigration B. integration
C. contribution D. second-generation

Cindy nervously glanced at the clock on the kitchen wall. Five minutes before midnight. Her parents were still out there celebrating their 15th anniversary.
“They should be home any time now,” she thought as she put the finishing touches on the chocolate cake. It was the first time in her 12 years she had tried to make a cake from zero, and to be honest, it wasn’t exactly an artistic success. The cake was... well, lumpy. And the coating was bitter, as if she had run out of sugar or something which, of course, she had.
And then there was the way the kitchen looked. Imagine a huge blender(食物搅拌器) filled with all the stuff needed for chocolate cake -including the bowls, plates and tools. Now imagine that the blender is turned on. High speed. With the cover off.
Do you get the idea
But Cindy wasn’t thinking about the mess. She was anxious for her parents to return home from their date so she could present her anniversary gift to them. Picturing her parents’ surprised faces when they saw the cake, she could feel a wave of excitement washing over her. She turned off the kitchen lights and waited excitedly in the darkness, hoping to give her parents a big surprise. Time seemed to her to be crawling with feet of lead while she anxiously awaited her parents’ arrival. When at last she saw the flash of the car headlights, she positioned herself in the kitchen doorway, her heart thumping like a drum. By the time she heard the key sliding into the front door, she was THIS CLOSE to exploding.
Assuming Cindy was already sound asleep, her parents tried to steal in quietly, but Cindy would have none of that. She turned on the lights dramatically and trumpeted “Ta-daaa!” She gestured grandly toward the kitchen table, where a slightly off-balance chocolate cake awaited their inspection.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: But her mother’s eyes never made it all the way to the cake.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: “Wow, look at the beautiful chocolate cake,” her father exclaimed.

根据文章第一段“As I stand in my favorite craft store, I’m faced with choices that mirror the world outside. You see, I love my foam board, which has foam inside and is sandwiched between two layers of paper or plastic. It’s easy to work with and affordable, but not friendly to the environment. Or take a look at the paintbrushes. The plastic handle brushes are cheap while the brushes with wooden handles cost a fair bit more.(当我站在我最喜欢的工艺品店时,我面临着反映外面世界的选择。你看,我喜欢我的泡沫板,它里面有泡沫,夹在两层纸或塑料之间。它很容易使用,价格也便宜,但对环境不友好。或者看看画笔。塑料手柄的刷子很便宜,而木制手柄的刷子要贵一些。)”可知,在工艺品商店,作者发现很难买到便宜又环保的材料。故选B。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“As an artist, I’m not exactly rolling in profits. Most of what I earn goes right back into my materials, leaving little room for choosing green materials. Fresh out of university, I am still searching for a job. Since I currently don’t have a regular income, I’m living with my family to save costs and paying careful attention to what I can afford.(作为一名艺术家,我并没有太多的利润。我赚的大部分钱都花在了我的材料上,几乎没有选择绿色材料的空间。大学刚毕业,我还在找工作。由于我目前没有固定的收入,我和家人住在一起,以节省开支,并将注意力放到我能负担得起的物品上。)”可知,作者是一位在生活和艺术中艰难奋斗的艺术家。故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“So, to reduce my personal impact on climate change while also living within my means, I make full use of my brushes until they’re on their last hair, and I’ve become a master at repurposing cardboard boxes and various packing materials. The firm plastic packaging that once housed my paints finds a second purpose as glass in my miniature windows. The cardboard from those boxes’ serves as bases for a range of miniatures.(所以,为了减少我个人对气候变化的影响,同时也在我能力范围内生活,我充分利用我的画笔,直到它们只剩最后一根毛,我已经成为了重新利用纸箱和各种包装材料的大师。曾经存放我的颜料的坚固的塑料包装找到了第二个用途,可以作为我的微型窗户的玻璃。这些盒子里的硬纸板可以作为一系列微型模型的底座。)”可知,作者将包装材料重复使用变成自己的艺术作品。故选D。
【4题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“It’s an ongoing process—a journey of give and take. While I try to reduce my ecological footprint, I am also learning to balance practicality while enjoying creating my own art.(这是一个持续的过程——一个给予与索取的旅程。当我试图减少我的生态足迹时,我也在学习在享受创造自己的艺术的同时平衡实用性。)”及全文内容可知,本文主要讲述了作者作为一名艺术家,经常要接触到一些不环保的艺术材料,于是作者开始使用一些绿色环保的艺术材料,并在追求艺术的道路上继续前行。A选项“我的绿色艺术家之旅”适合作为最佳标题。故选A。

5 How can some noise help us have a better sleep
A. By making us think of some special colors. B. By confusing our brain with different colors.
C. By reducing the effects of disturbing sounds. D. By copying the sounds that we are familiar with.
6 What is special about white noise
A. Explain. B. Classify. C. Remind. D. Determine.
C 6. A 7. A 8. D
根据第一段中“But some types of noise, specifically white, pink and Brown noise, can mask these sounds, creating a more harmonious background.(但是一些类型的噪音,特别是白色、粉色和棕色的噪音,可以掩盖这些声音,创造一个更和谐的背景)”可知,某些噪音通过减少干扰声音的影响来帮助我们睡得更好。
根据第二段“White noise contains sounds of all frequencies that humans can hear. But it comes across as a high-pitched buzz. That’s because of the way your ears hear it. Basically, your brain strengthens sounds in higher pitched frequencies. So while you may be hearing sounds from a variety of frequencies, the highest ones tend to drown the lower pitched notes.(白噪声包含人类能听到的所有频率的声音。但它给人的感觉是一种尖锐的嗡嗡声。那是因为你的耳朵听到它的方式。基本上,你的大脑会强化高音频率的声音。所以,当你听到各种频率的声音时,最高的声音往往会淹没较低的音调)”可知,白噪声的特别之处是听起来比实际要响亮。故选A。
根据第三段中“Pink noise takes the human tendency to hear only some frequencies into account and balances out the noise so that sounds of all frequencies are heard equally. The higher the frequency, the more its volume is weakened. (粉色噪音考虑了人类只听到某些频率的倾向,并平衡了噪音,使所有频率的声音都能被听到。频率越高,其音量就越弱)”以及第五段中“Brown noise takes this concept to the next level, further weakening higher frequency noise to produce an even deeper and richer sound. (棕色噪声将这一概念提升到下一个层次,进一步削弱高频噪声,从而产生更深沉、更丰富的声音)”可知,棕色噪音和粉色噪音的工作原理相似。故选A。
根据最后一段中“When it comes right down to it, the color of noise that will help you sleep mostly is the one you like best.” A. Explain.解释;B. Classify.分类;C. Remind.提醒;D. Determine.决定。故选D。
D 10. A 11. D 12. B

注意:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But her mother’s eyes never made it all the way to the cake. Instead, she landed on the chaos in the kitchen. Flour was sprinkled like snow over the counter tops, and chocolate fingerprints were stamped across the tiles. Amid this chaos, Cindy stood, a nervous smile flickering on her face, her hands coated in a mix of sugar and flour. “What have you done, Cindy !” her mother asked, her trembling voice filled with noticeable anger. Cindy’s heart sank. All her efforts to prepare the cake seemed to have just backfired. She stammered to explain herself but words eluded her, her mind in a total blank. Cindy looked up at her father as if asking for help.
“Wow, look at the beautiful cake!” her father exclaimed. He came over and rubbed her head affectionately. Cindy was reduced to tears. Between sobs, she poured out everything. Her mother’s stern expression softened as she realized that all Cindy had done was to give them an anniversary surprise. “I’m sorry, honey.” She gently wiped her tears away and the next second Cindy was in a tight embrace. “Let’s clean the kitchen together!” suggested her father. Soon everything was back in place and they sat around the table for the cake. Slightly off-balanced as it was, it tasted surprisingly delicious. The imperfect cake was just perfect for the celebration as a family.
