Revolutionary Glasses Make It Safe to Drive at Night
Did you know that more than 40 percent of all deadly car accidents occur at night A recent breakthrough eyeglass technology has made it safe to drive at night. It’s almost like having “X-ray” vision (视力) while driving.
Spend money on your safety and peace of mind behind the wheel with a pair of these cutting-edge night driving glasses. The amount of car accidents that occur at night is mostly the result of poor visibility. Even with 60% less traffic on the road at night, accidents still happen due to blinding light and just overall bad driving visibility.
Imagine being able to clearly see what’s in front of you and what’s approaching, even if it’s very dark and foggy. Once you start wearing ClearView night glasses, you’ll feel much more con dent and safe driving when it’s getting dark. With ClearView you will notice an instant reduction in strong light from oncoming traffic and bright street lights.
This is because the special yellow lens tint (镜片色彩) can block strong blue light, and increase contrast (对比). ClearView passes the global traffic light standard for safer sharper vision at night with ying colors.
You can start using ClearView immediately even if you wear glasses. Simply place ClearView on top of your glasses and be amazed by the difference this technology makes!

About a decade ago, Lawson was at a beach in Virginia watching his kids build castles right next to the waves.
“I kept trying to get them to come back because I thought it was a terrible idea,” he remarked. He wanted them to build their sandcastles closer to the dunes. But they found it more exciting to build right where the waves hit, seeing their sandcastles get destroyed, and then rebuilding them with whatever debris washed up from the ocean. “It seemed so symbolic, somehow, of how life works more than just building your perfect sandcastles,” said Lawson. When he decided to turn that sunny day into a children’s book, the idea came to just use pictures. “It seemed like it would work beautifully without words,” he said.
A Day for Sandcastles is illustrated by Qin Leng. It’s the second wordless picture book for Lawson and Leng since 2021’s Over the Shop. Leng’s illustrations stay pretty true to real life. Three siblings spend the day building sandcastles and watching them get destroyed by a flying hat. “To me it’s a celebration of childhood and the simple joys of life. These are the things I like to capture” said Leng.
Leng spent part of her childhood in France, and she was inspired by European comic books. “What I love to do when I illustrate a picture book is add side stories to the main storyline. I always think about the readers and the longevity of the book, and I want them to be able to discover something new every time they revisit the book,” Leng explained.
At the end of the day, the sleepy-eyed kids pile into the bus that will take them home. “Those last pages are some of my favorite. They capture that feeling like at the end of the day on the beach, when it’s getting dark and you feel completely exhausted,” Lawson said. It must be a universal childhood feeling: happy with sand, sticky from the salt, hot from the sun, and ready to fall asleep the moment you get into the car.
4. Why does Lawson mention the scene where the kids built sandcastles
A. To suggest a way to enjoy leisure. B. To remind readers of the childhood.
C. To convince us of how life works. D. To tell us the inspiration for his book.
5. What do you know about the two books mentioned
A. They are purchased by kids universally. B. Readers can only find pictures in them.
C. They carry no elements of comic books. D. The stories are literally works of fantasy.
6. How does Lawson feel when telling us the last pages in the last paragraph
A. Relieved. B. Pleased. C. Disturbed. D. Exhausted.
7. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Childhood in sandcastles B. Beautiful childhood memories
C. Popular illustrated books D. Explore the mystery of nature
C
In June a massive “heat dome” baked the famously temperate Pacific Northwest, subjecting parts of Washington State, Oregon and western Canada to extreme temperatures. It is virtually impossible that heat waves like this would have occurred without climate change. Scientists estimate it was a one-in-1,000-year event. “And that’s an ‘at least,’ ” says Kristie. L. Ebi. “It could be more rare than that.” If warming reaches two degrees Cabove preindustrial levels — the threshold (阈值) that most national governments have agreed to try to avoid in hopes of reducing climate change impacts, “that event could occur every five to 10 years,” Ebi says.
“In an average year in the U.S., heat kills more people than any other type of extreme weather,” says Kristina Dahl, a climate scientist. Hundreds of people died in the recent Pacific Northwest heat wave, according to estimates: there were at least 486 deaths in British Columbia, 116 in Oregon and 78 in Washington. A recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found there were more than 3,500 emergency department visits for heat-related illness this past May and June in a region that includes Oregon and Washington State.
The human body functions best at 98.6 degrees F (37 degrees C). The body has mechanisms to rid itself of excess heat, most notably sweating. But at a certain point, that fails to work, causing loss of consciousness. People can eventually acclimatize to some level of heat. If you live in a hot climate or work in hot conditions for a period of weeks or months, your body becomes more efficient at sweating and cooling itself down. This process takes time, however.
As the planet warms, heat waves like these this year are becoming frighteningly common and catching climate scientists off guard. “Even a lot of our climate models that project out how frequent extreme heat will be in the future wouldn’t have necessarily predicted this level of heat for that part of the country,” Kristina Dahl says. “But then to realize that I am seeing it in my lifetime, and living it right now, is really terrifying.”
8. What does Ebi’s saying imply in Paragraph 1
A. Heat dome has affected at least three regions.
B. Temperature reaches the threshold immediately.
C. Heat waves affect the Pacific Northwest greatly.
D. Severe weather could become frighteningly common.
9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Many areas are badly affected by heat waves.
B. Heat waves pose a major risk to public health.
C. More people died of illnesses in this summer.
D. Latest news on heat waves are widely reported.
10. What does the underlined word “acclimatize” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Adapt. B. Settle. C. Respond. D. Object.
11. According to Kristina Dahl, the extreme heat ________.
A. ruins his normal daily life.
B. gets scientists prepared to it.
C. fails to be accurately forecast.
D. should be examined frequently.
D
Scientists have discovered a new way of administering oxygen to the blood which could allow people to stay alive without breathing. The procedure, which works by injecting oxygen molecules enclosed in fatty molecules directly into the bloodstream, could extend an extra 30 minutes of life when they cannot breathe.
John Kheir, a doctor of the Boston Children’s Hospital, was inspired to begin his groundbreaking research after he experienced a patient’s tragic death, according to Science Daily. He was operating on a young girl whose pneumonia led to deadly brain damage after doctors were unable to place her on a breathing machine in time to save her.
In response, Dr Kheir started working on the idea of inserting oxygen directly into the blood. Early experiments showed that the intervention could in theory be very successful, he said, “We drew each other’s blood, mixed it in a test. tube with the microparticles, and watched blue blood turn immediately red, right before our eyes.” However, injecting pure oxygen into the bloodstream in gas form failed miserably when it was attempted 100 years ago, as it formed dangerous bubbles in the veins.
Much of Dr Kheir’s research therefore involved finding a substance which could surround the oxygen and allow it to be suspended in a liquid for injection into the body. He found that using fatty molecules was the best way to keep oxygen after using sound waves to trap the two substances together into small particles that can only be seen with the help of a. microscope. The particles were then made up into a liquid which is very heavily oxygenated—carrying “three to four times the oxygen content of our own red blood cells”, according to Dr Kheir.
When used on humans, the oxygen could probably last for up to 30 minutes, though injecting it for any longer could damage the patient’s blood. “This is a short-term oxygen substitute—a way to safely inject oxygen gas to support patients during a critical few minutes,” Dr Kheir said. He added that he thought the technique could become routine for doctors dealing with emergency situations.
12. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. John Kheir made a mistake in an operation.
B. An incident enlightened John Kheir’s research.
C. John Kheir failed to inject oxygen to a girl’s blood.
D. A young patient died tragically in John Kheir’s research.
13. What problem may lead to the failure of previous trials
A. The blue blood can turn red only in theory.
B. The microparticles fail to mix with oxygen.
C. Administering oxygen to the blood is difficult.
D. Oxygen gas inserted may cause more serious problems.
14. How did Dr Kheir solve the problem to successfully inject oxygen to the blood
A. To surround oxygen molecules with fat. B. To use sound waves to turn gas into liquid.
C. To involve more oxygen into red blood cells. D. To find a liquid with the aid of a microscope.
15. What is Dr Kheir’s attitude towards the new way
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Subjective. D. Hopeful.

How to Create the Perfect Spring Planter
Spring containers are an easy solution for jazzing up a colorless balcony and boring corners of any garden at this time of year. ______16______
Choosing the right container is important. Always think about the style of your garden. ______17______ They are solid pots for spring as they don’t blow over in those early spring winds. Check that the pot has a large drainage (排水) hole to ensure that the soil drains well, but always cover it with a crock (like a piece from a broken ower planter) so that the soil doesn’t block the hole and create problems with drainage later down the line.
Choosing the right compost (堆肥) is the key to the success of any planting. I think it’s best to use soil-based compost so that the soil does not become too heavy or waterlogged, especially in spring when we could have plenty of showers. ______18______ And too much water in the soil will freeze, preventing the plants from taking up the vital water.
Plant combinations are important, so always think about mixes which will last as well as annual and perennial (多年生的) ones. ______19______ A bunch of pots forces the eye to look around and take in each pot and plant combination. A nice option is planting summer owers like Dahlia or Lily to create a summer impact.
_____20_____ It can be achieved by using tall plants. If you don’t have a tall plant then you can always raise your pot off the ground with old house bricks or decorative pot feet, or use steps in your garden to create interest and drama.

“Bang. . !” Sara pushed the door open. She threw her school bag onto the floor and called out, “I’m home!” No answer. The house was silent. It sounded empty, but she knew it wasn’t. Her mum and dad were working upstairs.
Sara got a glass of orange juice, went into the conservatory (玻璃房) and sat down in her favourite chair. The garden was still in the dark afternoon. On one side, her mum’s garden was neat and tidy with boring short grass, boring straight flowerbeds and boring straight paths. But on the other side, Sara’s Nature Garden looked wild and exciting with big dead sunflowers and tall grasses.
“Nobody is interested in me. Mum and dad only think about their work,” she thought sadly.
Then she recalled: One month earlier, she learned in a magazine that many dogs were abandoned because their owners got bored with them; One hour earlier, she saw a cute dog wagging its tail and licking her friend’s face.
Sara knew today was special. Today things were changing. She couldn’t wait any longer. It’s time to talk to her parents.
So Sara got up from her chair and climbed all the way to the loft (阁楼). “Mum, I want a talk.” said Sara. “Just a minute!” Her mum clicked on the keyboard, took off her glasses and turned to her daughter. Sara coughed, took a deep breath, and told her mum that she wanted a dog. “No, Sara. That’s impossible,” her mum said firmly. Sara went to her father but got the same answer. She rushed into her room angrily and slammed the door shut.
Later, Sara’s mum knocked at the door and went in. “Darling, we know this is important to you. You can have a dog if you take the responsibility. But look at your Nature Garden, your school bag, your bedroom! What a mess! Do you think you can take good care of a dog ” said her mum.

These are the things I like to capture,” said Leng.
C They carry no elements of comic books. D. The stories are literally works of fantasy.
6. How does Lawson feel when telling us the last pages in the last paragraph
A. Relieved. B. Pleased. C. Disturbed. D. Exhausted.
7. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Childhood in sandcastles B. Beautiful childhood memories
C. Popular illustrated books D. Explore the mystery of nature
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. B 7. A

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

15. What is Dr Kheir’s attitude towards the new way
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Subjective. D. Hopeful.

Serving as an ancient capital, Hangzhou occupies a distinguished position in history. There are abundant well-preserved legacies of history for visitors to explore, among which the West Lake is a must-see spot. Moreover, silk is part of the history, culture and art of Hangzhou. You can discover the silk-related stories, legends and customs in China National Silk Museum and silk products can make delicate gifts for your parents.

“Bang.
