Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).
“Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body is held up, everything is held up and I’ve made it to 104.”
She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.
All together, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4, 385 kilometers. During that time she has had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing ... This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”
4. Why did Hunt-Broersma decide to run marathons
A. She wanted to set a new record.
B. She intended to challenge herself.
C. She was driven by her interest.
D. She was inspired by people like her.
5. What difficulty did Hunt-Broersma meet with
A. She didn’t get professional training.
B. She found it hard to keep her balance.
C. She suffered discomfort in her left leg.
D. She couldn’t use regular running blades.
6. What message does the author express through the story
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
B. Time works wonders.
C. A good beginning is half the battle.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
7 What may be the author’s attitude towards Hunt-Broersma
A. Annoyed. B. Sympathetic.
C. Admiring. D. Humorous.

Research studies indicate that children who eat breakfast perform better at school. Maybe it works that way for adults too since our brains need fuel to work properly.
Skipping breakfast is a common way for people who are trying to lose weight, but unfortunately, it’s usually not a successful way. Your body (or more likely, your brain) expects to be refueled a few times each day. When you don’t eat breakfast, you may feel so hungry by lunchtime that you eat more foods than you normally would, which cancels out the calories you cut by skipping breakfast. You may also be tempted to choose foods that are not the healthiest choices when you feel like you are starving.
For many people, eating breakfast may be an important part of a weight loss diet. Research studies tell us that people who eat breakfast are more likely to keep up a healthy weight. Some experts believe that breakfast keeps your metabolism (新陈代谢) running higher. In fact, it takes three or four days of eating nothing before the body starts changing down your metabolism. It’s more likely that people who regularly eat breakfast also make good dietary choices the rest of the day.
Breakfast should include a healthy source of protein and plenty of fiber; the combination will help satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunchtime. The protein can come from low-fat meat, low-fat dairy products, or nuts. Eggs are also a good source of protein. High-fiber foods, include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
If you really don’t like to eat breakfast in the morning, you can split it up into two smaller meals. Eat a hard-boiled egg, or a small cup of yogurt at home before you leave for work, and then about an hour or two later, take a break from work and snack on an apple and a handful of healthy nuts like pecans or walnuts.
8. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2
A. Eating breakfast keeps us healthier than skipping it.
B. Skipping breakfast isn’t very useful for losing weight.
C. Our brain needs a lot of fuel to work properly.
D. What healthy food we should eat for breakfast
9. What does the underlined word “tempted” Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Pretended. B. Determined. C. Attracted. D. Warned.
10. All the following are a good source of protein EXCEPT _______.
A. low-fat meat B. low-fat dairy products
C. vegetables D. eggs
11. The passage is most probably taken from _______.
A. a news report B. a personal diary
C. a biology book D. a healthy life website
D
The Monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. The forests are the insects’ winter home. The population decrease is worrying as the butterfly group is already considered at risk of disappearance.
Mexico’s government and the non-profit World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently issued findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the Monarch butterfly presence has decreased to less than a hectare (公顷) of forest area. In the mid-1990s, Monarch butterflies could be found on around 18 hectares of the forests. The findings represent an almost 60 percent decrease in the Monarch butterfly population compared to last year’s study. It is also the second-lowest population finding since the first study took place more than thirty years ago.
Biologists blame the drop on higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern U. S. where the butterflies lay eggs. The weather conditions affect the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time. In one of the planet’s famous wildlife migrations (迁徙), the butterflies travel south as many as 4,500 kilometers from places as far north as Canada. They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold.
Monarch butterfly populations change year to year. As recently as 2021, the same study showed a 35 percent increase to cover around 2.8 hectares. Officials and activists called for more action to help the species. Such calls include the need to reduce threats of destroying milkweed and the need to protect forests. “We can’t lower our guard,” Jorge Rickards, head of WWF’s Mexico office, told reporters after releasing the latest data.
12. What can be learned from the second paragraph
A. The reasons for the Monarch butterfly population decrease.
B. The findings of the research on the Monarch butterfly population.
C. The efforts Mexico’s government and World Wildlife Fund have made.
D. The effects of the Monarch butterfly population decrease on the environment.
13. What mainly caused the Monarch butterfly population decrease according to biologists
A. Habitat loss. B. Human hunting.
C. Weather conditions. D. Their natural enemies.
14. What should be done to help the Monarch butterflies
A. Plant milkweed. B. Keep the species in a reserve.
C. Promote public education. D. Watch over the forests.
15. What’s the best title of the passage
A. The Monarch Butterflies Are a Threat to Other Insects
B. The Monarch Butterfly Population Decrease Is a Concern
C. Mexican Forests Are the Winter Home of the Monarch Butterflies
D. The Monarch Butterflies Often Suffer When Travelling to Spend Winter

A Rome wasn’t built in a day.
B. Time works wonders.
C. A good beginning is half the battle.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
7. What may be the author’s attitude towards Hunt-Broersma
A. Annoyed. B. Sympathetic.
C. Admiring. D. Humorous.
B 5. C 6. D 7. C
根据文章第二段中的““Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. (‘以前有健全的人这样做过。我想看看我能否在义肢上做到这一点,看看会发生什么。’她说。)”可知,先前曾有体格健全的人连续跑马拉松,Hunt-Broersma想看看自己戴着假肢能不能连续跑马拉松;由此可知,Hunt-Broersma决定跑马拉松是为了挑战自我。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade (刀锋式跑步义肢). Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.(使用假肢的跑步者不能使用普通的假肢。他们需要一个刀锋式跑步义肢。Hunt-Broersma两个刀锋式跑步义肢,但她只能用其中一个,因为她左腿肿胀,无法连接到另一把刀。但即使发生了痛苦,她也能够忍受并继续下去。)”可知,Hunt-Broersma跑马拉松时要忍受左腿肿胀带来的不适和痛苦。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第三段中的“But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.(但即使发生了痛苦,她也能够忍受并继续下去。)”和最后一段中的““It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing ... This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”(‘它教会了我一个人可以有多坚强,以及绝对的决心有多重要。

D. What healthy food we should eat for breakfast

A. Pretended. B. Determined. C. Attracted. D. Warned.
10. All the following are a good source of protein EXCEPT _______.

C. vegetables D. eggs

My English learning experience
In China, learning English is a must for almost all the students, no matter they are pupils or college students. It is true that many lucky students have a talent for English learning and they have no trouble learning it. For me, learning English used to be painful and tiring.
For example, it was very hard for me to memorize new words and I could only speak two or three words each time. Having been laughed at by others many times, I even stopped learning it for weeks. However, with my English teacher’s continuous encouragement, I tried my best and used every chance to speak English. Now I can communicate with foreigners in English without any difficulty.
My advice: Never give up learning English, and you can be an excellent English learner.
