Humans sweat to keep cool. But did you know that besides them, only a small percentage of the world’s animals keep cool by sweating In fact, animals have a variety of ways to beat the cruel heat, some of which you might say are even a little bit strange.
Giraffes
We know that giraffes live in a particularly dry, hot environment, but they don’t sweat. How do they stay cool The answer lies in their beautiful skin pattern, which is like a large network with a very complex vascular (血管) system under each patch (斑块). A giraffe’s special blood flow can force heat out of its body. Because of their rather large skin surface, this is a more-than-effective way to escape the heat.
Elephants
As the largest land animal on earth, elephants rely on their huge pair of ears. Simply by tapping their ears, elephants can lower their body temperature by 12℃ or more. Moreover, elephants often open their ears when facing the wind to reach this cooling effect.
Dogs
The dog’s way of escaping the heat is probably the most common in our daily lives--sticking their tongues out. By breathing heavily, dogs quickly force the heat from their body and breathe cooler air in, which enters their lungs and cools their entire body.
Koalas
Koalas are well-known for their “laziness”, so it’s natural to see one lying on a branch and think it’s just being its lazy self, but that’s not the case. Researchers say that the koalas select their trees very carefully, looking in hot weather for tree bark that is cooler than the air temperature. By getting into the cool surface of the bark, koalas can stay relatively comfortable during Australia’s powerful heat waves.
21. How do dogs beat the heat
A. By choosing the suitable tree skin. B. By putting their tongues out.
C. By moving their ears. D. By flowing blood.
22. Which of the following animals uses their habitats to cool
A. Giraffe. B. Elephants. C. Dogs. D. Koalas.
23. What do four animals have in common
A. They live lazily. B. They don’t sweat.
C. They don’t stay cool. D. They live comfortably.
【答案】21. B 22. D 23. B

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了4种动物不同的战胜酷暑的方法。
【21题详解】
细节理解题。由文章Dogs部分第一句“The dog’s way of escaping the heat is probably the most common in our daily lives--sticking their tongues out.(狗狗逃避炎热的方式可能是我们日常生活中最常见的——伸出舌头)”可知狗通过伸出舌头来逃避炎热。故选B项。

【23题详解】
细节理解题。由文章Giraffes部分“A giraffe’s special blood flow can force heat out of its body.(长颈鹿特殊的血液流动可以迫使热量排出体外。)”可知长颈鹿通过特殊的血液流动散热;由文章Elephants部分“Simply by tapping their ears, elephants can lower their body temperature by 12℃ or more.(只要轻拍耳朵,大象就能将体温降低12℃甚至更多。)”可知大象通过拍耳朵散热;由文章Dogs部分“The dog’s way of escaping the heat is probably the most common in our daily lives--sticking their tongues out.(狗逃避炎热的方式可能是我们日常生活中最常见的——伸出舌头。)”可知狗通过伸出舌头来散热;由文章Koalas部分“Researchers say that the koalas select their trees very carefully, looking in hot weather for tree bark that is cooler than the air temperature. It was supposed to be a normal trip to the supermarket. My son was little, and it was getting close to nap time, so I was rushing. But when I went to start the car, I realized that I must have locked my keys in the trunk with my bag.
So I took my son and went back inside the store. I had to use their phone to call my husband for the spare key. After many calls and messages with no answer. I was getting upset. My son was tired and getting fussy. I was exhausted from a sleepless night that all moms go through when their kids are teething. When he went into full-on crying, I felt tears come down my face, too.
An employee at the store tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to come with her. I was fearful for a moment, thinking I was going to be scolded and thrown into the storage area to keep us quiet. The employee, whose name was Kelly, took me, to my surprise, to the Starbucks cafe inside the store. She bought me a coffee and settled down with us. As we talked, my son settled into a sound sleep. After about fifteen minutes, she said her break was over and if I couldn’t contact my husband, they would get the trunk open.
After I got home that day, I kept thinking about what Kelly had done for me and wanted to do something. So, Kelly from the Safeway in Delaware, these are the things that you have done because I was thinking of your kindness as I did them: bolding doors for people, letting someone ahead of me in line, hitting “yes” on the donation button at the checkout, and many others.
I am so glad I locked my keys in the car that day. Who would have thought a cup of coffee could have so much of an effect on a person

A. She led a very busy life. B. She was indeed a kind woman.
C. Kelly made her a better person. D. Kelly took pride in her kindness.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text

C A Forgetful Mother D. A Responsible Employee

【24题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“My son was tired and getting”后文“I was exhausted from a sleepless night that all moms go through when their kids are teething. When he went into full-on crying, I felt tears come down my face, too.”可知,儿子累了,变得很难以取悦。当孩子长牙的时候,所有的妈妈都会经历一个不眠之夜,这让作者精疲力竭。当他嚎啕大哭的时候,作者觉得自己的眼泪也流下来了。故画线词意思是“难以取悦”。故选A。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The employee, whose name was Kelly, took me, to my surprise, to the Starbucks cafe inside the store. She bought me a coffee and settled down with us. As we talked, my son settled into a sound sleep. After about fifteen minutes, she said her break was over and if I couldn’t contact my husband, they would get the trunk open.(让我惊讶的是,这名名叫Kelly的员工带我来到了店内的星巴克咖啡厅。她给我买了杯咖啡,和我们一起坐了下来。就在我们谈话的时候,我儿子进入了酣睡。大约十五分钟后,她说她的休息时间结束了,如果我联系不上我丈夫,他们就会打开后备箱)”可知,Kelly拍作者的肩膀是为了安慰她。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“After I got home that day, I kept thinking about what Kelly had done for me and wanted to do something. So, Kelly from the Safeway in Delaware, these are the things that you have done because I was thinking of your kindness as I did them: bolding doors for people, letting someone ahead of me in line, hitting “yes” on the donation button at the checkout, and many others.(那天回家后,我一直在想Kelly为我做了什么,我想为她做点什么。所以,来自特拉华州西夫韦超市的Kelly,这些是你所做的事情,因为我在做这些事情的时候也想到了你的善良:为人们打开门,让别人排在我前面,在付款台的捐赠按钮上点击“是”,还有很多其他的事情)”可推知,作者想通过列举她在第四段中所做的事情来表明Kelly让她成为一个更好的人。故选C。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“I am so glad I locked my keys in the car that day. Who would have thought a cup of coffee could have so much of an effect on a person (我真庆幸那天我把钥匙锁在车里了。谁能想到一杯咖啡会对一个人产生如此大的影响呢?)”结合讲述了作者在去超市的时候把车钥匙锁在了后备箱里,给丈夫打电话也没人接,而儿子因为累了也开始嚎啕大哭,这时一个店员为作者买了一杯咖啡,给了作者安慰。可知,A选项“一杯咖啡”最符合文章标题。故选A。

People perform graceful moves, all while standing on a bamboo strip in the river. You may think it’s a scene from an art movie, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: bamboo drifting (独竹漂).
Bamboo drifting dated back to over 2,000 years ago in the Chishui River area of Guizhou. During the Qin Dynasty, the Bozhou district of Zunyi city was known for its high-quality nanmu. It was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no transportation along the Chishui River, people had to stand on one log (原木) to drift down the river. Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born. In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo's lower price.
Now, communities in Guizhou hold bamboo drifting competitions every year during Dragon Boat Festival. Due to the great strength and balance it takes for one to master this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Yang Liu, 24, is an inheritor of bamboo drifting. Yang said the most difficult part of bamboo drifting was keeping one’s balance. “I fell in the water several times when I was practicing.” she told.
“Usually, the bamboo under your feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in your hands is about 5 meters. If the length or diameter of the bamboo is not long enough, it will not be buoyant (有浮力的)enough to float. So we should fight against the water flow by continuously changing the angle (角度).” Yang added.
But the love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in winter cold and summer heat.
Yang also produces new ideas when spreading the culture of bamboo drifting. For example, she connects dance with bamboo drifting to make it more graceful and wears hanfu when performing, creating a beautiful feel. In 2020. Yang registered on social media platforms and posted her videos. “I want to spread it to other countries so that more people around the world will like Chinese culture.” she told China Daily.
28. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2
A. The use of bamboo drifting. B. The birthplace of bamboo drifting.
C. The acting skills for bamboo drifting D. The historical development of bamboo drifting.
29. Why was bamboo drifting listed into the national intangible cultural heritage
A. It spreads Chinese culture to the world
B. It enjoys great popularity among Guizhou people.
C. It’s physically and technically demanding for performers.
D. It’s an important activity during the Dragon Boat Festival.
30. What is the most challenging for bamboo drifting
A. Keeping one’s balance. B. Performing graceful moves.
C. Choosing bamboos of proper size. D. Continuously changing the angle
31. Which of the following best describes Yang Liu
A. Responsible and brave. B. Creative and determined.
C. Hard-working and outgoing. D. Knowledgeable and competitive.

In Shakespeare’s HAMLET, Polonius asks the prince, “What are you reading, my Lord ” Hamlet replies, “Words, words, words.” Either, as is likely, Hamlet wasn’t interested in what he was reading, or, less likely, he didn’t understand the words he was reading. In this case, Polonius should have lent Hamlet a good dictionary.
Dictionaries are essential tools for people who like to read. There are so many words in English that even the most educated person will sometimes meet an unfamiliar word and have to look it up. Languages keep changing, too, with new words constantly being added and new meanings being applied to old words. For example, the 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular dictionary in China, has added new words such as “chu xin” “fen si” “er wei ma” etc. As for new meanings, “girl” once meant “a small child of either sex”. And “naughty” didn’t mean you were “enjoying playing tricks”; it meant you were poor.
A printed dictionary can’t keep pace with all the changes, which is why most dictionaries have websites and apps to help you keep up-to-date. However, I still prefer printed dictionaries because they give you more definitions and more examples of how a word is used. Even a simple word, such as “set”, has 430 meanings (the most of English words) but an online dictionary would only offer two or three. A printed dictionary also gives you the opportunity to discover new words as you run your finger down the page looking for the word you want.
There is no “official” English dictionary, but the Oxford English Dictionary is considered to be the best. For English language learners, however, I would recommend the Collins COBUILD Dictionary for Advanced Learners. Hamlet, by the way, was Danish and a college student. He would have appreciated the Collins Dictionary to help himself with his words, words, words. This dictionary has over 40,000 words and gives you full-sentence definitions with good examples of how words are used.
32. What’s the function of paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To let the readers know more about HAMLET.
C. To arouse readers’ interest in Shakespeare.
D. To explain when it’s necessary to use a dictionary.
33. Why does the author mention “girl” in paragraph 2
A. To show how powerful Xinhua Dictionary is.
B. To support the idea: languages keep changing.
C. To prove new words are being added to dictionaries.
D. To imply “girl” also means “boy” in some cases.
34. What’s the author’s attitude to printed dictionaries
A. Favorable. B. Ambiguous. C. Negative. D. Critical.
35. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph
A. To introduce the history of dictionaries.
B. To call on learners to use dictionaries.
C. To recommend Collins Dictionary.
D. To explain why Hamlet likes Collins.

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了火星的自然环境以及火星任务的实施难度。
【36题详解】
根据上文“Mars is truly a fascinating planet for those of us here on Earth.(对于我们地球上的人来说,火星确实是一个迷人的星球)”以及后文“It is about half as big as Earth and is often referred to as the Red Planet because of its red surface.(它大约有地球的一半大,经常被称为红色星球,因为它的表面是红色的)”可知,本句与后文并列,都是在介绍火星,G选项中it指代Mars。故G选项“它是少数几个我们能用肉眼看到的行星之一”符合语境,故选G。
【37题详解】
根据上文“The Red Planet has the largest volcano in the solar system-Olympus Mons.(这颗红色星球上有太阳系中最大的火山——奥林匹斯山)”以及后文“That’s about three times the height of Mount Qomolangma.(这大约是珠穆朗玛峰高度的三倍)”可知,本句是在说明奥林匹斯山的高度。故A选项“大约27千米高”符合语境,故选A。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Mars also has an atmosphere, but it is very thin and made up mostly of carbon dioxide. Because of its thin atmosphere and greater distance from the Sun, Mars is much colder than Earth.(火星也有大气层,但大气层很薄,主要由二氧化碳组成。由于火星大气层稀薄,距离太阳更远,所以它比地球冷得多)”以及后文“The dust storms of Mars can grow so big that sometimes they blanket the entire planet and last for months. The poles on Mars are a lot like Antarctica, capped by ice, but much of Mars’s ice is made from carbon dioxide, not water.(火星上的沙尘暴会变得非常大,有时会覆盖整个星球,持续数月之久火星的两极很像南极洲,被冰覆盖,但火星的大部分冰是由二氧化碳而不是水构成的)”可知,本句是在说明火星上的气候,后文提到了沙尘暴,可见火星上有风,故E选项“然而,火星确实有天气,有云和风”符合语境,故选E。
【39题详解】
根据后文“Since 1960, more than half of all attempted Mars missions have failed.(自1960年以来,超过一半的火星任务都失败了)”可知,后文提到很多火星任务都失败了,可见火星任务并不容易实施。故B选项“火星任务从来都不容易”符合语境,故选B。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Chinese experts are confident about their plan to explore Mars, in spite of the many challenges. The first Mars unmanned spacecraft was launched from Wenchang around 2020. But it is only the beginning of deep voyages into outer space.(尽管面临诸多挑战,中国专家对他们的火星探测计划充满信心。第一艘火星无人飞船于2020年前后在文昌发射升空。但这只是外太空深度航行的开始)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,应承接上文继续说明中国对宇宙的探索方向,故F选项“中国将继续探索宇宙的奥秘”符合语境,故选F。

A Giraffe. B. Elephants. C. Dogs. D. Koalas.
23. What do four animals have in common
A. They live lazily. B. They don’t sweat.
C. They don’t stay cool. D. They live comfortably.

A. The use of bamboo drifting. B. The birthplace of bamboo drifting.

A. It spreads Chinese culture to the world
B. It enjoys great popularity among Guizhou people.

D. It’s an important activity during the Dragon Boat Festival.
30. What is the most challenging for bamboo drifting

C. Choosing bamboos of proper size. D. Continuously changing the angle
31. Which of the following best describes Yang Liu
