Books have tremendous power. Between their pages, readers can be transported to anywhere imaginable and become just about anyone or anything. Unfortunately, many children all over the world don’t have access to books. For several years now, Maria Keller, a 14-year-old girl from Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been changing that fact.
When she was 8 years old, Maria already loved reading. She also noticed that some of her classmates didn’t read as much as she did. When she asked her mother why that could be, her mother said that they might not be able to afford books. Maria had never thought of this. She could not believe that some children might not have bedtime stories read to them. She became determined to change this.
With her mother’s help, Maria created Read Indeed. Read Indeed is a non-profit organization aiming to collect and distribute(分发) books to children in need. During the early stages of Read Indeed, Maria set the goal to collect and distribute 1 million books by the time she was 18. It didn’t take long to reach that goal.
Today, at age 14, she has collected over 1.8 million books and has shipped them to many states and countries around the world. She says, “I cannot live without books. As I continue my mission, I have learned that the number of kids who have no books are in the hundreds of millions. So I just can’t give up, even after reaching my original goal of 1 million books distributed.”
She recently set a new goal: to distribute donations to kids in need in every state in the United States, and every country in the world. She keeps track of her progress on a large map at the warehouse(仓库) where they store and sort books. Maria believes that she can get support from even more people and help kids around the world to become better readers!
24. We can know from Paragraph 2 that ________.
A some of Maria’s classmates had no textbooks

D. The number of children who have no books has greatly dropped.
27. Which word can best describe Maria
A. Optimistic. B. Smart. C. Brave. D. Strong-willed.

Over the centuries the French have lost a number of famous battles with the British. However, they’ve always felt superior in the kitchen. France has for centuries had a reputation for cooking excellence, and Britain for some of the worst cooking in the world. But according to a recent survey, that reputation may no longer reflect reality.
In the survey, 71% of the Britons said they cook at home every day, while only 59% of the French said they cook daily. British home cooks spend more time cooking each week and also produce a greater variety of dishes than French home cooks.
The reaction in London was predictably enthusiastic. British food has greatly improved since the 1990s. Once upon a time, the menu for many family meals would have been roast beef, potatoes and over-cooked vegetables, but not now. Home cooks are experimenting with the huge range of ingredients now available in British supermarkets and are preparing all kinds of new dishes, using the cookbooks that sell millions of copies every year. As a result, there’s much more diversity in British food now, compared to French food, which tends to be very traditional.
Some French people say that the survey did not show the whole picture. They agree that during the week French women don’t cook as much as they used to because most of them work and don’t have much time. They tend to buy ready-made or frozen dishes, but many of them make up for it on the weekend. There’s also a difference between Paris and the countryside. It’s true that people in Paris don’t cook much, but elsewhere, cooking is still at the heart of daily life.
For many French people, opinions about British food have not changed. When Bernard Blier, the food editor at a magazine, was asked about British food, he replied: “I don’t go out of my way to try it. It is not very refined. You can say that I’m not a fan at all.”
28. According to the passage, nowadays British people ______.
A. cook less at home than the French every day.
B. no longer eat roast beef and over-cooked vegetables.
C. are more willing to try cooking all kinds of new foods.
D. buy more cookbooks than French people do.
29. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph
A. French women cook less often now.
B. The French prefer ready-made dishes.
C. French women seldom cook on the weekend.
D. Cooking is at the heart of people’s life in Paris.
30. What is Bernard’s attitude towards British food
A. He would love to try it. B. He shows no interest in it.
C. He considers it worse than before. D. He considers it better than before.
31. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. The history of British food. B. The history of French food.
C The change in British food. D. The change in French food.
D
Research has found that using wood for construction instead of concrete and steel can reduce emissions. But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral (碳中和). “Only a small percentage of the wood gets into a timber (木料) product, and a part of that gets into a timber product that can replace concrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different countries, but large amounts of a harvested tree are left to be divided into parts, used in short-lived products like paper or burned for energy, all of which generate emissions.
In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.
Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they found a large increase in global demand for wood would probably lead to rising emissions for decades. Accounting for emissions in this way, the researchers reported in a related paper that increasing forest harvests between 2010 and 2050 would add emissions equal to roughly 10 percent of total annual emissions.
Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer-lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.”
32. What is wrong with previous researches according to Searchinger
A. They got wrong statistics. B. They used an incorrect concept.
C. They included too many factors. D. They were applied in limited countries.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The process of the new research. B. The background of the new study.
C. The challenge of the new research. D. The achievements of the new study.
34. When will the emissions drop off greatly according to the new study
A. When wood grows slowly.
B. When wood is largely used to make paper.
C. When wood is largely used in construction in countries like Brazil.
D When wood is largely harvested in countries like Brazil.
35. What is Ali Amiri’s attitude toward the new result
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.

How to make Quick Decisions For Your Life
We make decisions every day. ____36____When it comes to making decisions, choosing the right one can at times be stressful, especially if the decision must be made quickly. Indecision often weighs us down, but there are some useful tips for making quick decisions more easily.
___37___Sometimes the key to making a quick decision comes down to planning ahead of time for just such an occasion. We all know we’re going to come to an important decision-making point sooner or later, so having a plan already in hand can put our mind at ease when that time comes.
Overcome fear. ____38____While it may seem difficult to overcome the fear of making the wrong choice, many experts agree that we shouldn’t be afraid to make the wrong decision, even if it seems important. The vast majority of wrong decisions can be corrected, while delaying decisions can often lead to more problems.
Write down all the advantages and disadvantages of your decision. Even if you don’t have all the information, writing down all the pros and cons (优缺点) is a good starting point for figuring out what to do. In cases where there simply isn’t enough time to write things down, make a mental list in your mind. Thinking of the pros and cons can help you organize your thoughts. ___39___
Determine criteria. Remember that every decision you make should come with a certain list of criteria.___40___But once you know the requirements you’re looking for, making a decision will become easier. Look for the choice that satisfies the list you’ve made, and once that choice is found, you should move ahead with it.
A. Have a plan.
B. The list may be short or quite long.
C. Communicate your decision with others.
D. And this can always lead to a clear answer.
E. So cut out any options that you know you will not choose.
F. Often, one thing that keeps us from making decisions is fear.
G. Some can be very important while others are not serious in the long run.

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing (追逐) the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn’t notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped (滑) and fell into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too.
“Help! Help!” We cried. I could feel my body tingling (酸麻) as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea. My sister, although using all her strength, wasn’t able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.
Luckily, two boys playing on the beach happened to see us. They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously, hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach. Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily. Eventually, they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Another huge wave crashed over my head and pulled me under.

根据文章最后一段he replied: “I don’t go out of my way to try it. It is not very refined. You can say that I’m not a fan at all.”
D. When wood is largely harvested in countries like Brazil.
35. What is Ali Amiri’s attitude toward the new result
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.
B 33. A 34. C 35. D
根据第一段“But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral (碳中和).(但是普林斯顿大学的Tim Searchinger说,许多这样的研究都是基于一个错误的基础,即砍伐木材是碳中和的)”可知,Searchinger认为之前的研究使用了一个不正确的概念。
根据第二段“In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.(在世界资源研究所的一份报告中,Searchinger和他的同事们模拟了2010年至2050年期间,建筑中使用更多木材将如何影响排放,其中包括砍伐木材产生的排放。他们考虑了各种类型的森林和用于建筑的部分木材。他们还考虑了更换混凝土和钢材所节省的排放)”可知,第二段主要介绍新研究的过程。故选A。
根据第三段“Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil.(在某些情况下,研究人员发现排放量显著减少。但他们认为,每一种情况下,用于建筑的木材所占比例都高得不切实际,而且只有在巴西等较温暖的地方才会出现这种快速增长)”可知,根据这项新的研究,当木材在像巴西这样的国家大量用于建筑时,排放量会大幅下降。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer-lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.”(芬兰阿尔托大学的Ali Amiri表示,报告中关于需求增长导致排放的结论可能是正确的,但对于我们已经收获的木材来说,情况就不同了。他说:“提高当前收成的效率,将更多的木材用于比纸张更长久的用途,将减少排放。我们不能只是说我们应该停止使用木材。”)”可知,Ali Amiri对此研究结果从正反两方面都进行了说明。由此推知,其态度是客观的。故选D。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
G 37. A 38. F 39. D 40. B
根据“We make decisions every day.(我们每天都在做决定)”以及“When it comes to making decisions, choosing the right one can at times be stressful, especially if the decision must be made quickly.(在做出决定时,选择正确的决定有时会带来压力,尤其是在必须快速做出决定的情况下)”可知,我们每天都在做决定,从长远来看,有些决定会是正确的,有些决定也会是错误的,所以在快速做出决定的时候,做出正确的决定并不是很容易的。
根据“Sometimes the key to making a quick decision comes down to planning ahead of time for just such an occasion.(有时,快速做出决定的关键在于提前为这样的场合做好计划)”可知,本段给出快速做出正确决定的建议是提前做好相应的计划。 所以选A。
根据“Overcome fear.(克服恐惧)”以及“While it may seem difficult to overcome the fear of making the wrong choice, many experts agree that we shouldn’t be afraid to make the wrong decision, even if it seems important. (虽然克服对做出错误选择的恐惧似乎很困难,但许多专家同意,我们不应该害怕做出错误的决定,即使这看起来很重要)”可知,本段给出克服恐惧的建议,所以要阐明为什么要克服恐惧的原因。由此可知,F项“通常,有一件事让我们无法做出决定,那就是恐惧。”符合语境,而且F项中的fear呼应段首句中的overcome fear。故选F。
【39题详解】
根据“Thinking of the pros and cons can help you organize your thoughts.( 思考利弊可以帮助你组织你的想法)”可知,这里讲了思考优缺点的好处,就是思考优缺点总是引导我们找出清晰的答案。
根据“Remember that every decision you make should come with a certain list of criteria.(记住,你所做的每一个决定都应该有一系列标准)”可知,本段说明做出决定得制定标准,这些标准可能不一样,但你所做的每一个决定都应该有一系列标准。

Dear Jones,
How is everything going It’s been a while since I started my academic life here as an exchange student, but I’m still in great appreciation of what you have done for me on the very first day of my enrollment.
As a freshman in a totally alien environment, I had to carry luggage loaded with bedding stuff as well as a bag full of daily supplies. Then came your timely assistance, which saved me a lot of energy. What’s more, on the way to the dormitory, but for your accurate guidance and precise introduction to different areas around, I would have already been lost in such a vast campus.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Another huge wave crashed over my head and pulled me under.

Fortunately, the two boys managed to find a lifeguard.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Another huge wave crashed over my head and pulled me under. I struggled desperately, trying to reach the surface, but couldn’t make it. Seeing this, my sister swam as hard as she could towards me. “Hold on!” She yelled when she grasped my arm and tried to head for the shore with me. But she was soon physically exhausted and looked terribly pale. I felt a sharp pain in my lungs and could barely breathe. Both of us felt hopeless and thought we were not going to survive!
Fortunately, the two boys managed to find a lifeguard. Having learned what was happening, the lifeguard rushed fearlessly against the strong wind and huge waves. Such an experienced swimmer was he that he reached us in no time. He grabbed my arm and quickly carried me to the shore, where he left me taken care of by the two boys. Then, without delay, he returned to save my sister. We were so blessed to be alive and heartily thankful to that courageous lifeguard and the two boys who had saved our lives!
如:desperately, make it, physically exhausted等高级词汇;She yelled when she grasped my arm and tried to head for the shore with me. We were so blessed to be alive and heartily thankful to that courageous lifeguard and the two boys who had saved our lives!
