A waste collector’s quick thinking and heroic actions saved the lives of a man, a woman, and their pet dog as a fire broke out in a small house in Birmingham.
The event happened around 8 a. m. when several 999 calls reported the fire. Firefighters from Tipton, Dudley, Bilston, and Wednesbury stations raced to the event site. Upon arrival, they felt a sense of relief to find that Steve Whitehouse, a 49-year-old Refuse Operative employed by Serco, had already rescued the people inside.
Steve was collecting waste with driver Kevin Marriott when they saw the fire. Without hesitation (犹豫), Steve took action — climbing a first-floor balcony (阳台) three times to ensure the safety of the trapped persons and the dog.
“I saw a young woman crying from the balcony to attract people’s attention, and all I could think of was that I needed to get to her as quickly as possible,” Steve told West Midlands Fire Service. He successfully pulled the woman to safety and then went back up to rescue a painful young man and his dog.
“The smoke was getting thicker. I managed to pack the dog in a blanket, jumped back down to the ground, and got the owner to throw the dog to me. I then went back up to help him,” Steve described.
Once the rescue task was complete, Steve turned his attention to warning neighbors of the danger, while Kevin helped those who had left their homes. After taking a moment to recover over coffee, the two continued their daily rounds.
Chris Green, the officer responsible for the event, praised Steve’s great courage, stating, “He is a hero. To save the lives of two people and a dog is amazing. We will be putting him forward for official recognition.”
The fire is believed to have started when an e-bike battery burst while on charge at the bottom of the stairs, cutting off the residents’ escape route.

Scientists say they have found stone tools that might represent the oldest-known evidence (证据) of humans in Europe. The recent research suggests that the human ancestors (祖先) started settling in Europe 1.4 million years ago. That is hundreds of thousands of years earlier than previously thought.
The stone tools were first discovered in the 1970s near the town of Korolevo, close to Ukraine. But the tools’ age remained unclear.
The place of the find is important for understanding how humans first spread into Europe. They moved into the area during warm periods, called interglacial periods. Those were times, in between Ice Ages, when huge amounts of ice covered Europe.
The scientists judged the age by identifying (识别) the effects of rays from space on some kinds of minerals (矿物). In this way, they found the age of the remains containing the stone tools was at around 1.4 million years.
The researchers believe that the maker of the tools was likely a human ancestor called Homo erectus. That early human species appeared around 2 million years ago and spread across Africa, Asia and Europe before disappearing perhaps 110,000 years ago.
“No bones were found at Korolevo, only stone tools. But their age manifests the idea that Homo erectus was the only possible human species at the time. We know very little about our earliest ancestors. They used stone tools for killing and probably used fire,” said Roman Garba, who was the lead writer of the research published in Nature.
Homo erectus was the first member of human developing history. They had the same body building as us, only a smaller brain.
The tools, made of volcanic rock, were made in a way that is called Oldowan. While simple, they represent the beginning of human technology.
It was believed that the oldest-known evidence of humans in Europe was from about 1.2million years ago from a place called Atapuerca in Spain.
28. What have these researchers found in this discovery
A. The earliest stone tools used by humans. B. Remains of the daily life of ancient people.
C. The earliest evidence of humans in Europe. D. The earliest human ancestor ever discovered.
29. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4
A. Living conditions in ancient times. B. The research method used by scientists.
C. Places where the stone tools stayed. D. The minerals in the stone tools.
30. What does the underlined word “manifests” mean in paragraph 6
A. Proves. B. Hides. C. Changes. D. Challenges.
31. What does the author think of the ancient stone tools
A. They are signs that humans walked upright.
B. They were advanced tools in ancient times.
C. They are key points in human development.
D. They show that humans started hunting earlier than thought.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. A 31. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文,主要讲述了科学家们发现了可能代表欧洲最早的人类证据的石器,并对这些石器进行了研究。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Scientists say they have found stone tools that might represent the oldest-known evidence(证据) of humans in Europe.”(科学家们说他们发现了可能代表欧洲最早的人类证据的石器)可推知,这些研究者在这次发现中找到了可能是欧洲最早的人类证据,故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“The scientists judged the age by identifying (识别) the effects of rays from space on some kinds of minerals (矿物).”(科学家们通过识别来自太空的射线对某些矿物的影响来判断年代)可推知,作者在这一段中主要告诉我们的是科学家们使用的研究方法,故选B。
根据文章倒数第二段“The tools, made of volcanic rock, were made in a way that is called Oldowan. While simple, they represent the beginning of human technology.”(这些工具是由火山岩制成的,制作方式被称为Oldowan。虽然简单,但它们代表了人类技术的开始)可推知,作者认为这些古代石器是人类发展的关键点,故选C。

An interesting study of different languages identified Spanish as the happiest language of all because of its large number of happy, positive words.
Researchers worked together on a 2015 study, finding human language shows a common positive meaning. Their aim was to explore the positivity of human language. To do this, the teams examined 100,000 words in ten different languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Indonesian, and Arabic.
Their next step was to create a database of 10,000 common words in each language, later marking each word as positive or negative (消极的) in meanings. The researchers depended on teams of 50 different native speakers in each language to score these common words based on emotions. These participants (参与者) scored each word on a happiness scale of 1—9 based on the level of confidence it passed.
Until recently, strictly testing this positivity in languages has been difficult due to a lack (缺乏) of data across various languages, but the Internet has made it much easier. The researchers were able to depend on a wide range of online text sources for their study, including social media posts, news media, song lyrics, book and movie descriptions.
“Overall, our major scientific finding is that words, which are the most important in human language, show positive emotions,” the researchers say in the study. But Spanish is the happiest language of all!
While language positivity is the general rule, the researchers observed differences in the happiness between languages, with Spanish coming out on top in terms of joyful words. The results showed that Spanish-language web pages had the highest rates of positive words. The Romance language of Portuguese came in second, followed by English, Indonesian and French.
The study is part of a larger project to build a “hedonometer”, a happiness meter tool that tracks the “happiness signs” in social media posts almost in real time.
32. What is the goal of the researchers
A. To compare the language pronunciation.
B. To study languages’ quality of being positive.
C. To explore the differences between languages.
D. To find out which words are most commonly used.
33. What has made the language research more convenient to carry out
A. Rich text sources online. B. Clear research purposes.
C. Enough equipment included. D. Support from native speakers.
34. What is the function of “hedonometer”
A. Stopping people choosing rude words. B. Directing people to use positive words.
C. Updating the content on social media timely. D. Measuring the happiness of online language.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Spanish Is the Happiest Language

C. Different Languages Express Different Emotions
D. Humans Usually Choose the Words of Happiness

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It has been another long, hard winter here in the mountains of my home. High winds, heavy snows, freezing cold, and heavy rains have all hit us, causing damage to people, power lines, and even the trees around here. And today, as I look at the broken branches filling my daughter’s yard, memories from another hard winter several years ago flood me.
It was a day of dark clouds and bitter wind, and soon it began to rain. The rain was falling more and more heavily, and the wind blew wildly. You could see only a few meters on the road. At this moment, I was at work, looking through the window at the rain. I began to worry about how I would drive home from work. Luckily, the rain stopped before I finished my work.
It rained heavily for hours. The rainwater from the hills made the rivers full, filled the fields and formed water holes in the road. In addition to this, broken and fallen tree branches were everywhere.
I was driving home. Suddenly, I saw one of these branches had broken off a tree hanging above the road and fallen across it. It was big enough to crash my car, so I slowed down my car and turned on my emergency flashing lights.
Thankfully, there were no other cars there yet, but I knew that it would only be a matter of time before one crashed into that branch, maybe causing an injury or even a death. I quickly got out of my car and tried to pull the branch to the side of the road.
Just as I did, though, a little red car raced around me, hit a pool of water in the road and made my trousers dirty with rainwater.

Then we tried our best to remove the branch together.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Before I said something, the red car pulled up. A young lady got out of the car. She apologized to me for her mistake. She said she hadn’t noticed the pool as she only focused on the broken branch. She asked me why I was standing in the middle of the road. After knowing the reason, she was moved by me and said that it would be dangerous to do this because I would most likely be hit by a car coming at high speed. Then she put a safety sign behind me and promised to work with me.
Then we tried our best to remove the branch together. It was a lot heavier than I thought it would be but with all our strength, we started to move it. Inch by inch, we pulled it off the road. When it was finally safely pulled to the side, we stood up and smiled at each other. I got some water from the car and we washed our hands together. Then she said she could pay for what she had made to my trousers, but I refused and said her help meant a lot to me. We both smiled and said good-bye. Despite the bad weather, we were both in a good mood, because we prevented a potential risk.

They moved into the area during warm periods called interglacial periods.
D
B. Languages Can Show a Person’s Nationality
C. Different Languages Express Different Emotions
D. Humans Usually Choose the Words of Happiness
