The magical world of The Little Prince brought to life!
About the exhibition
French visual artist Arnaud Nazare-Aga has worked with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation, and together they have designed a unique touring art exhibition of sculptures inspired by the original watercolor illustrations of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s book, The Little Prince, as well as photos, manuscripts (手稿) and drawings.
The exhibition will be presented for the very first time in Auckland from 1st June to 25th June, 2023 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the publication of The Little Prince.

They are displayed in the dark to be discovered by the senses of touch and hearing. For many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going where no human had gone before. He wanted to cut a path through unexplored lands and discover rare, exotic species.
That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it into a reality.
In December 2015, he and a team of Australian and American scientists ventured into an isolated tropical rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the mist-covered region. “As time was limited, we were dropped in by helicopter. Once we were on the ground, there were no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around, ” Bexler says.
Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chicken-like bird with strange orange skin hanging from its neck. The scientists soon determined that the unusual creature was a type of honeyeaters — the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60 years.
The honeyeater wasn’t the only surprise for the scientists. They discovered more than 40 previously unknown plant and animal species—13 birds of paradise, 20 frogs, four butterflies, and five palms. “We were like kids in a candy store,” Bexler recalls. “Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before.”
The newfound species didn’t shy away from the scientists. Two long-nosed echidnas — primitive egg-laying mammals — let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. An echidna looks like a hedgehog and is also called a spiny anteater.
Bexler thinks the animals weren’t scared because they had never seen humans before. “In almost all parts of New Guinea, animals are hunted for food, and because of this, they are very cautious of people,” he explains. “This area gives scientists a place where they can go to study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people. ”
Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia. Local people called Kwerba hunt and collect plants from the outer-edges of the forest but told Bexler that not even their ancestors had gone so far into the woods. The wooded area is approximately a 10-day walk from the nearest village.
Bexler and his team did not have enough time during the expedition to study the area completely. They hope to return and expect to record many more undiscovered species. “We just scratched the surface,” Bexler says. “Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery.”
4. Which word can best describe Bruce Bexler
A. Adventurous. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Careful.
5. What does Bruce Bexler mean by saying “We were like kids in a candy store”
A. They didn’t have enough food and were hungry.
B. They were very excited about what they saw.
C. They were misbehaving like naughty children.
D. They knew that if they kept searching, they’d find sugar in the forest.
6. What can we conclude about the area Bruce Bexler explored
A. The best way to explore the area is by helicopter.
B. The locals live in the centre of the forest.
C. The area still contains many plants and animals unknown to science.
D. The locals are unwilling to allow the scientists to enter the deep woods.

If you think search engines powered by artificial intelligence provide you with useful-sounding answers, it is more likely that you are wrong, researchers have found. “In these current systems, accuracy is negatively related to perceived usefulness,” says Nelson at Stanford University. “The things that look better end up being worse.”
Microsoft is just one of many companies offering AI-powered search tools, which generate results in digestible paragraphs that cite other websites rather than simply returning a list of links. To investigate these tools, Nelson and his colleagues fed 1,450 popular searches into Bing Chat and other such tools, including NeevaAI and PerplexityAI. These questions included examples such as “What are the latest technological discoveries ” The team then asked people to rate whether the content used as citations (引文) in the results actually supported the statements made by the AIs.
According to this assessment, only 75% of citations supported the sentences they were attached to, and only 52% of statements were supported by citations at all. “That means the rest either have no citations, or they are just wrong.” says Nelson.
The researchers also asked people to rate fluency of response and how useful they seemed, and discovered a negative correspondence. For every 0.1 increase in fluency ratings, the precision decreased by 10.6%.
Aravind Srinlvas, a co-founder of PerplexityAI, says he welcomes the study. “The results are similar to the work the company has conducted, and improvements are possible. Never judge an upcoming technology by what it is today, but rather by the potential for what it can be in the future,” he says. But Nelson isn’t sure whether AI-powered search is the right approach. “I’m a little mixed on whether such search tools should be rolled into systems,” he says.
7. How did Nelson’s team examine the AI-powered search tools
A. They interviewed different experts on this field.
B. They invited Bing Chat users to rate the content.
C. They compared the results of different companies.
D. They input commonly searched questions into the tools.
8. Why did Nelson’s team conduct the study on AI-powered engines
A. To offer sources and citations. B. To demonstrate their potentials.
C. To highlight their positive aspects. D. To test their accuracy and fluency.
9. What is Aravind Srinlvas’s attitude towards the future of AI-powered engines
A. Optimistic. B. Intolerant. C. Skeptical. D. Wait-and-see.
10. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. AI Is Coming to Search Engines
B. How to Live with Artificial Intelligence
C. Can We Trust AI-Powered Search Engine
D. Microsoft Adopts AI-Powered Search Engine

I was a shy 13-year-old boy that year, afraid to speak before people and poor at communicating with others. My parents were worried so they introduced a part-time job in a restaurant tome during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me. Although I hated it and didn’t believe it would bring any change to me, I had to accept it. The part-time job fell on Monday of each week.
On the first Monday, I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was speaking with them, my face turned red and my voice was low. On my way back home, I felt so bad. But when I reached home, my bad feelings disappeared. I found my parents had brought home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long period of time. The cat was so lovely.
However, one Thursday, he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and this cat didn’t have “street smarts”. I guessed he would probably die and wouldn’t be home again. And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him, I quite believed he wouldn’t be home again. My parents told me “A miracle (奇迹) may happen as long as you don’t give up.” However, I quite doubted it.
On the morning of the following Monday, I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there, I thought about the work and felt upset. It wouldn’t be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job! And thinking of the cat, I felt even worse.
Since it was still early, I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again though I had little hope. I told myself, “If I still fail to find him this time, I won’t look for him again.” Then, I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around. Minutes later, suddenly, a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My eyes widened and I was surprised to find it was just our cat.

Encouraged, I rushed to the bus stop and decided not to give up the part-time job.

【答案】Dear Ben,
I’m sorry to learn about your current trouble regarding the use of AI tools for your assignment. I can fully relate to your situation as I once faced similar temptations to manage heavy academic workloads. However, AI should never replace our own intellectual efforts.
As a scientist once said, “Our intelligence is what makes us human, and AI is an extension of that quality.” While AI can assist in certain areas, over reliance on it undermines the essence of learning and compromise academic integrity. Therefore, I suggest you improve your work without solely depending on AI tools and have an open conversation with your teacher, clarifying your intentions and demonstrating your commitment to genuine learning.
Learning is not just about completing tasks but also about the process of acquiring knowledge. Wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua

二、 读后续写(满分25分)
62. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
My eyes widened, and I was surprised to find it was just our cat. Excited, I walked right up to him. While I carried him in my arms, he pushed his dirty face into mine. I wept with joy because I had found my cat. I turned around and took him to rush home. Seeing me carrying our cat, my mother was surprised. When I showed him to her, she said, “Just as I told you, a miracle may happen as long as you don’t give up.” This time, I nodded and smiled.
Encouraged, I rushed to the bus stop and decided not to give up the part-time job. “Maybe it’ll indeed change me if I stick to it.” I told myself while heading towards the restaurant. Still feeling a little tired and afraid while I was working that day, I was better than before. And I continued doing the job. Eventually, I miraculously found I dared to look directly at the customers and communicate with them with a confident smile. My parents were happy about my changes. When my job ended that summer, I wrote a sentence in my journal: “Don’t give up before a miracle happens.”
