Boston University was always my dream, but when it came to making the decision, I had to be sure that I was confident in my choice. Boston University drew me in for several reasons—its perfect location in the heart of Boston, its strong education programs, and the comfortable community. One special thing that set Boston University apart from my other college options was that I could be placed in the classroom to experience teaching in my freshman year. I had wanted to be a teacher for as long as I could remember, after all.
After just six short weeks, I was absolutely confident that I made the right choice to attend Boston University. At Boston University, I attended an education program—ED 100. Each Wednesday, I went to Bowman Elementary School to help in a fifth grade classroom.
Although I was a secondary education major, working with fifth graders was very memorable. One of my weekly tasks was to lead a reading group of about five students. It was tiring, but I fully enjoyed getting to know their strengths and a little bit about each student apart from their studies.
As the weeks went on, I found myself further involved in more classroom activities, often helping students one by one or in small groups. The students never stopped amazing me —they were always ready to take part in class activities and share their ideas. For each class, I usually spent a long time preparing it. I also loved learning from other teachers, and taking note of their excellent teaching skills, some of which I hoped to use in my own classroom.
The program—ED 100 has even further confirmed my desire to become an educator. I have passion to work with children. I can’t wait to have my own classroom of students. I’m so happy that I’ve made the right decision to choose Boston University.

D. They showed a talent for studying languages.

A. Strict and careful. B. Creative and kind.

Animal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. The problem has led to efforts to “rewild” places where such life existed before human development, pollution and climate change forced it out. The American city of Detroit is an example of how human actions can increase rewilding, which generally means helping natural systems in damaged locations, removing dams or building tunnels to reconnect animal pathways cut by roads.
Detroit’s population reached a high of 1.8 million in the 1950s. Then the population began dropping. By 2000, there were fewer than one million people living in the city. Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years. Some structures were destroyed, leaving empty areas that plants and animals regained as habitats. Nonprofit groups have also planted trees and community gardens in these areas. Anti-pollution laws and government-supported cleanups made nearby rivers better for fish and native plants.
Now, Detroit is home to 300 bird species and is a busy visiting place for ducks and others during migration. Unlike most big cities, its population is decreasing but its streets and buildings remain in place. And there are many kinds of habitats, including large lakes, rivers and human neighborhoods. Detroit’s parklands are so quiet that people don’t even know they’re in the city.
“It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said John Hartig, a professor of University of Windsor. “Now that’s not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur. The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to embrace the presence of more and more wildlife. After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to live with wildlife. To really make a difference in dealing with the biodiversity crisis, you’re going to have to have people on board.”
8. What does the author want to tell us by the example of Detroit
A. It’s government-supported efforts that really matter.
B. It’s hard for humans and wildlife to live in harmony.
C. Humans’ efforts can make a difference in rewilding.
D. Humans are to blame for the worsening environment.
9. What might have happened in Detroit at the beginning of 21st century
A. The city was overpopulated. B. Many buildings were abandoned.
C. The environment was badly damaged. D. More community gardens disappeared.
10. What can we infer about current Detroit from the text
A. It is a big city crowded with tourists and bird species.
B. Tourists don’t show any interest in its quiet surroundings.
C. It’s turned into a place where people can get close to nature.
D. It’s become a center for those who study animals and plants.
11. What does the underlined word “embrace” in the last paragraph mean
A. Accept. B. Delay. C. Imagine. D. Supervise.
D
Up to 60 Shanghai maths teachers are to be brought to England to raise standards, in an exchange arranged by the Department for Education. The announcement comes as a campaign is launched to raise adult maths skills. A survey of 300 adults for the numeracy campaign found that over a third thought their level of maths had held them back. An accompanying economic analysis said that a lack of maths skills cost the UK 20 billion pounds per year.
The plan to bring 60 English-speaking maths teachers from Shanghai is an attempt to learn from a city that has been the top performance in the OECD’s Pisa tests. The OECD says that children of poor families in Shanghai are on average better at maths than middle class children in the UK. The Shanghai teachers, expected to arrive from the autumn, will help share their teaching methods, support pupils who are struggling and help to train other teachers.
“W have some smart maths teachers in this country but what I saw in Shanghai—and other Chinese cities--has only strengthened my belief that we can learn from them.” said education minister, Elizabeth Truss, who has recently visited Shanghai, accompanied by head teachers from England, “They have a can-do attitude to maths, and I want us to match that and their performance,” She stressed the economic significance of raising maths standards, for individuals and the country. “As part of our long term economic plan, we are determined to drive up standards in our schools and give our young people the skills they need to succeed in the global race. Good maths qualifications have the greatest earning potential and provide the strongest protection against unemployment,” said the education minister.
12. Poor maths skills have caused serious ________ consequences in England.
A. academic B. economic C. cultural D. political
13. What is the main factor behind Shanghai teachers’ success in maths teaching
A. Their students are from poor families.
B. Their students have a talent for maths.
C. They teach in a highly developed city.
D. They have a positive attitude to teaching.
14. According to Elizabeth Truss, raising maths standards can be helpful in ________.
A. discovering one’s maths talent at an early age
B. teaching how to earn money in the global market
C. promoting the pupils’ international test performance
D. equipping young people with global competitiveness
15. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Good Maths Skills Are about Hard Work.
B. Why Are English Maths Standards Left Behind
C. Why Are Shanghai Maths Teachers Getting Popular
D. Chinese Teachers Bring the Art of Maths to English Schools.

A boy called Jamy always arrived home hungry every day and his parents couldn’t figure out why, despite making meals for him. When Jamy wouldn’t share what was going on, his parents decided to visit the school principal and his teacher Callum, hoping they could offer some insight.
After talking with Jamy’s classmates, the principal and his parents heard a story they weren’t expecting. Although Jamy never talked about it, his classmates told them that he always came to school without food. The principal and his parents were shocked. No wonder Jamy was always so hungry after school! Was there something happening on the way to school that Jamy didn’t tell them
To make the situation clear, the principal asked Jamy’s teacher, Callum, to talk to Jamy in private. During the conversation with the teacher, Jamy refused to say any further details about the situation, leaving everyone frustrated and helpless. And despite multiple questioning, Jamy still refused to say any knowledge of the situation. This left the principal and the teacher so confused that they were at a loss what to do.
Jamy’s parents were becoming increasingly concerned as their child continued to come home from school without saying a word about it. They hadn’t gotten any closer to uncovering the truth about why Jamy was always so hungry. The lack of communication from their child only added to their frustration and helplessness. They knew they needed to take action to get to the bottom of the problem, but they had no idea where to start, which puzzled Jamy’s parents.
