Best Sleep Music Apps
If you want to sleep better at night, trying a sleep music app might be the answer. Here are some ideal sleep music apps to choose from.
Calm
Calm is one of the most popular sleep music apps and its large library of relaxing and sleep-causing tracks is largely responsible for that. This app offers a free version, but to really take advantage of what Calm has to offer, you had better choose the paid version, which costs $ 69.99 for one year. A lifetime membership is $ 399.99.
Relax Melodies
Relax Melodies is intended to calm your mind with relaxing sound. The composer is visual and easy to use, and the Discover page gives you access to other app features, like bedtime stories and breathing exercises. Though its free version provides a great introduction to the idea of sleep music, the paid version unlocks a larger library of sounds. Consider paying for it if there're particular sounds or features that really attract you.
Headspace
Headspace is a feature-rich app designed in a simple way that makes it quick and easy to use its library of sleep-specific music. The Sleep icon at the bottom of the app is easy to identify and leads to a library of options that include Sleep Music and Sleep Radio. It's worth noting that nearly everything in Headspace's Sleep Library requires an extra subscription. Headspace costs $ 69.99 annually, or you can pay $12.99 per month.
Pzizz
Pzizz offers sleep music tracks you can use at naptime, bedtime, or to improve focus. One thing that makes Pzizz different is its voice narration(旁白)option. If you find the presence of a calming voice to be comforting or benefit from someone helping you to relax your body and mind, then Pzizz is a good choice for you. Male and female voice options are available and the voice is low and calm. It has a free version but you should pay for extra subscriptions.

A. Calm. B. Headspace. C. Pzizz. D. Relax Melodies.
22. How much should you pay at least for the one-year subscription of Headspace

Wang Fang, a Suzhou native, has given her heart and soul to Kunqu Opera. Wang, who has twice won the Plum Performance Award — China’s top award for theater and opera performances-started to learn the traditional art form in 1977.
Born with a melodic voice, Wang loved to sing and dance when she was little. She performed frequently, and was recruited by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe (剧团) when she was in middle school. However, her parents refused the troupe’s invitation, insisting that she should concentrate on her studies and not drop out of school. After members of the troupe visited the parents repeatedly and showed great sincerity,Wang’s parents finally agreed.
Learning the traditional art form was never easy. She started to learn how to pronounce words, sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. As an actress playing martial artists roles at first, she had to spend extra time practicing kung fu movements. Years later, Wang used the word “unimaginable” to describe how hard the days were when she first learned Kunqu. She was soaked in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains (冻疮) on her hands when training in shabby classrooms with broken windows. “But I was young and determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice,” Wang recalls.
Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s,when she watched the show Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. “I was shocked,” Wang says. “Her every movement was full of elegance and delicacy. Each of her lines and songs was perfect. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time in my life, and it has stayed with me since.” Now, Wang has herself become a master of Kunqu. Her performances have impressed generations and helped to promote the art form among young people.
24. Why did Wang’s parents turn down the troupe’s invitation at first
A. They didn’t think Wang had artistic talent. B. They saw no future in learning Kunqu Opera.
C. They didn’t want Wang to ignore her studies. D. They regarded members of the troupe as insincere.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A. Wang has made great efforts to learn Kunqu well.
B. Artists should be given more attention and care.
C. Traditional culture needs to be further promoted.
D. Wang has played a key role in the development of Kunqu.
26 What changed Wang’s attitude towards Kunqu Opera
A. Winning the Plum Performance Award. B. Joining the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe.
C. Watching Zhang’s masterly performance. D. Being greatly admired by the audience.
27. What does Wang’s story show us
A. It is never too late to learn. B. Rome was not built in a day.
C. Doing is better than saying. D. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Supermarket shelves are filled with plant-based alternatives to cow milk, including soy, nut, and coconut milk. These products are popular with consumers who cannot drink cows’ milk for health reasons, as well as with those concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While the dairy-free(非乳制的) options work well with cereal or in coffee, they fail miserably when it comes to making milk-based products like cheese or yogurt. However, these shortcomings may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a new company in California, which has figured out how to create animal-free milk in a laboratory!
Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya founded the company in 2014 after becoming increasingly annoyed with the lack of cows’ milk-free alternatives, particularly for cheese. For Gandhi, who stopped consuming animal products five years earlier due to environmental and animal welfare concerns, the motivation to create a better alternative stemmed from his love of cheesy pizza. Pandya was spurred into taking action after being forced to eat some “really bad” dairy-free cream cheese on his sandwich
The two MIT biomedical engineering scientists decided to join forces to create a more realistic alternative to dairy-based products. In their university lab, the pair spent nine months first isolating cow DNA then inserting it into yeast(酵母). This genetic modification enabled the yeast to produce the necessary milk proteins. The final step of the process involved mixing the proteins with some plant nutrients and fats.
The dairy-free milk not only tastes like the real thing but is also healthier, has a longer shelf life and, most important of all, is Earth friendly. According to the company’s website, when compared to conventional milk production, their process uses 65% less energy, creates 84%o less greenhouse gas emissions and requires 91% less land and an amazing 98% less water! Best of all, since it contains real milk proteins, the product behaves like the cow-produced version, which means vegetarian consumers will no longer have to deal with soggy cheese on their sandwiches and pizzas.
The company plans to bring their creation to market later this year and their first product will most likely be cheese since there are already numerous good cows’ milk alternatives available to consumers.
28. The underlined word "those" in paragraph 1 refers to_______.
A. alternatives B. people
C. products D. reasons
29. The company s founders were motivated to make the new product because of_______.
A. their deep concern for the environment
B. their worry that farm animals were poorly treated
C. the over-consumption of the dairy-based products

30. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. The dairy-free products cannot be stored for a long time.
B. The new products will taste better than dairy-based ones.
C. Cow farming causes considerable environmental damage.
D. The dairy-free milk will be more expensive than cow’s milk.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Healthier Cheese B. New Milk Saves Planet
C. Fresher Milk, Better Future D. Making Milk without Cows

Tiny, black-capped chickadees (北美山雀) have big memories. They store food in hundreds to thousands of different locations in the wild—and then come back to these places when other food sources are low.
Scientists have known that chickadees have incredible memory skills. That memory can be a matter of life or death for these birds when there are no enough food resources in colder months.
Some researchers thought that neurons called place cells (细胞) would explain these birds’ ability to remember where their food is stored. These cells are known to include information about where things are in space. But recently, Selmaan Chettih and his team found that each time a chickadee hides a seed (种子) in a specific location, a unique brain pattern appears—separate from place cells.
To observe this, Chettih and his team created special areas with lots of feeders filled with sunflower seeds. They put small flaps (片状下垂物) where birds could hide seeds.
The scientists tracked the activity in their brains. Each time a bird hid a seed under a flap, researchers saw a brief unique brain pattern appear—what they called the bar code. Different patterns appeared even if the birds hid many seeds in the same location. When the birds revisited these sites and retrieved the hidden seeds, the same bar code-like pattern appeared again, as though all the information about each location and seed were related to a unique brain pattern.
The researchers compared these memories to episodic memories in humans, which are memories of specific events or personal experiences. They’re important to how humans connect time, people, places and sensory information together.
Chettih says that this seed-hiding behavior has a clear pattern of activity, which may help researchers build a structure for how the brain creates and stores memories.
32. Why are memory skills necessary for chickadees
A Memory skills show their intelligence and learning abilities.
B. Memory skills can help them survive in colder months.
C. They need memory skills to identify different types of food.
D. They use memory skills to avoid being attacked by other animals.
33. What did Chettih and his team find
A. Unique brain patterns appeared when chickadees hid seeds.
B. Chickadees’ memories were controlled by place cells.
C. Chickadees preferred hiding sunflower seeds.
D. Chickadees often hid many seeds in the same location.
34. What does the underlined word “retrieved” mean in paragraph 5
A. Got back. B. Gave up. C. Repaired. D. Designed
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To compare chickadees and human memory skills.
B. To present a detailed description of chickadees.
C. To introduce a study on chickadees’ memory.
D. To provide readers with a way to improve memory skills.

Tripod’s story started one spring morning as I was finishing a morning surgery at the veterinary clinic (兽医诊所) I owned. I was writing up medical records of the surgery patients when my receptionist (接待员) stuck her head into my office. She told me there was a big cat lying outside with a seriously injured front leg. What’s worse, nobody knew whom it belonged to.
Then I sent two of my pre-vet students to pick up the poor cat while I went back to my record-keeping. But it wasn’t long before I heard the students returning with this newest patient who seemed to be in pretty bad condition.
I carefully checked up the injuries which seemed to be caused by the pressing of a heavy object. With the extremely horrible smell, I knew from years of experience this cat didn’t have an owner. “Well, then,” I sighed, “I’m not sure whether we are able to bring this cat back to life, but let’s give him our best shot anyway. Afterwards, let’s see if we can find a home for him. ”
Just then, when one of the students began touching the cat’s head gently, somewhere deep in the cat’s throat, a weak purr (呼噜声) began. As the student continued to pet the cat, I noticed the cat’s breathing became less laboured (缓慢而困难的).
When I performed the complicated operation, I whispered, “You’re a fighter, aren’t you, boy You deserve a chance to live.” However, after the surgery, he lost one leg, and still struggled with life and death. Over the next few weeks, Tripod, the cat, went through many ups and downs, but I was sure about his resilience (快速恢复的能力). News about Tripod spread. A number of customers stopped by regularly to check on the progress of his recovery, including Mrs Melson, a pet lover.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讨论了音乐在我们生活中的重要作用,探究了为什么音乐会让我们感觉如此良好,并介绍了音乐如何影响我们的大脑和情绪。
【36题详解】
根据前文“Music plays an important role in our lives.(音乐在我们的生活中扮演着重要的角色)”可知,此句为段首句,所以空处应是进一步说明音乐的重要,所以F项“We can recall vivid memories and emotions when listening to music.(听音乐时,我们可以唤起生动的记忆和情感)”符合文意,是对前文的进一步解释。故选F项。
【37题详解】
根据前文“Unlike food, music isn’t necessary for our survival.(与食物不同,音乐不是我们生存所必需的)”以及后文“Of course, everyone is different and music will make us respond according to our own taste and familiarity. Yet, investigations have shown that some music will give people a universal experience.(音乐使大脑充满了一种叫做多巴胺的化学物质,它与快乐、动机和奖励有关)”可知,前文讲述音乐不是必需品,后文讲述音乐能带来快乐,前后为转折关系,所以C项“However, it is extremely rewarding and pleasurable.(然而,它是非常有益和愉快的)”符合文意,和上文构成转折,引出下文。故选C项。
【38题详解】
根据前文“Studies have shown that certain pieces of classical music will have the same effect on everyone.(研究表明,某些古典音乐对每个人都有同样的影响)”可知,B项“They cause the same changes in the brain.(它们会在大脑中引起相同的变化)”是对前文的详细解释,为什么会有同样的影响。故选B项。
【39题详解】
分析设空位于段尾,应是对前文的总结,根据前文“Neuroscientists conducted research using PET scans to detect the release of dopamine in the brain when subjects listened to their favorite songs. They later used MRI to view the pleasure center of the brain where dopamine is released and then mapped out its connection with other areas of the brain.(神经科学家利用PET扫描来检测受试者在听自己喜欢的歌曲时大脑中多巴胺的释放情况。随后,他们用核磁共振成像观察了释放多巴胺的大脑愉悦中枢,然后绘制出它与大脑其他区域的联系)”可知,D项“It was these connections that were the most interesting revelation.(这些联系才是最有趣的发现)”是对前文的总结,其中connection为同词复现。故选D项。
【40题详解】
根据前文“New music fits into patterns already mapped out in the brain by our past musical tastes. It is pleasurable not only because it is familiar, but it is different just enough to feel new and exciting.(新的音乐符合我们过去的音乐品味在大脑中已经形成的模式。它之所以令人愉快,不仅因为它是熟悉的,而且它的不同正好让人感到新鲜和兴奋)”可知,此处在讲述音乐让人愉快的原因,所以E项“Music, therefore, can be used as a mood enhancer or as a motivator.(因此,音乐可以用作情绪增强剂或激励剂)”和前文构成因果关系,因为音乐让人越快,所以可以用作情绪增强剂或激励剂。故选E项。

The day finally came when I decided Tripod had really recovered. The signs of his improvement became increasingly evident. The wounds began to close and the fur started to grow back, which was once a constant reminder of the accident gradually disappeared. His appetite slowly returned, his purrs growing louder. He had gained almost five pounds and was getting around well on his three legs. The once dying creature now showed glimmers, curiosity and an enthusiasm for life in his eyes. Everyone in the clinic had grown to love this three-legged fighter.
Though unwilling to part with Tripod, we were happy to see Mrs Melson come for him. Drawn to Tripod’s story, the lady expressed her desire to provide him with a loving home. After careful consideration and discussions, we agreed that Mrs Melson would be the perfect family for Tripod. As Tripod settled into his new home, he quickly adapted, becoming a cherished member of the family. His tale of resilience and recovery inspired many, and the clinic continued its mission to care for animals in need, honoring the spirit of compassion and dedication that had saved Tripod’s life.
