Half of all people will have significant amounts of grey hair by the age of 50. If greying occurs before the age of 30, it is known as premature greying. Possible reasons for this happening:
genetics
long-term dieting
lack of protein and nutrients
extreme mental and emotional stress
lack of iron, copper, zinc, and Vitamin B12
"If you color your hair too often with strong chemicals and put them on scalps(头皮)that are still growing, the cells in your hair might get damaged. This can change how melanocytes(黑色素细胞)work. Because of this, they may stop making color earlier than normal," says Trichologist and Director of Hari and Scalp Clinic, HairMantra, Dr Padmaja Redekar. She recommends yearly scalp check-ups should be as routine as annual medicals.
"At HairMantra, you will receive expert advice with solutions for your whole lifestyle, products and supplements for your hair problems, and a hair care routine to use at home. Call us today and balance your hair health from the inside out," Padmaja adds.
What is considered a possible reason for grey hair showing up early
A. Occasional dieting. B. Premature genes.
C. Extreme physical stress. D. Insufficient protein and nutrient.
22. What would Dr Padmaja Redekar most likely to recommend
A. Coloring your hair once a year. B. Changing how melanocytes work.
C. Protecting the cells in your hair earlier. D. Getting your scalp checked every year.
23. Where is the text probably taken from
A. An instruction guide. B. A healthcare report.
C. An advertisement. D. A medical brochure.

During the last week of Fu Bao's public viewing earlier this month, visitors endured waiting for 5—6 hours just to give a glance at the panda for only five minutes, as Everland Panda World restricted viewing time to manage the flood of visitors.
Born to parents Ai Bao and Le Bao in July 2020. Fu Bao is South Korea's first naturally-born panda. He said people visited the social media sites every day so it felt like he was raising her together with them. They cared so much for her and shared the same emotions of raising a baby panda together during such difficult times.
Fu Bao will be transferred to China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan Province. The film, Article 20, directed by Zhang Yimou, draws its name from Article 20 of the Criminal Law, which focuses on the sometimes controversial legal concept of justifiable defense. Drawing inspiration from real-life cases of justifiable defense, the film gained widespread attention and struck a chord with the public during the Spring Festival holiday. The movie calls for a detailed interpretation of legal terms and urges against compromising on unlawful conduct.
According to the Criminal Law, when a person, faced with an unlawful attack, takes action to protect his or her own rights or interests or those of others, and the attacker is thereby harmed, the defender will be considered to have acted in justifiable defense and will not bear criminal responsibility. For some time, justifiable defense has been regarded as a "dormant clause" (沉寂条款), due to the influence of misconceptions, such as "whoever is injured or killed is right".
But the true meaning of the law should be to increase the responsibility for wrongdoers, rather than burdening good people. Recent cases have shown that, for ordinary citizens, justifiable defense is no longer a daydream. A high-profile case in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, in 2018 served as a wake-up call and caught the attention of authorities regarding such cases. In that case, a traffic argument led to a motorist who took a knife with him confronting(对峙) another man. The motorist was killed, and police and judges determined that the defender's actions constituted justifiable defense. Since then, the justifiable defense clause has been applied in several places across the nation. The concern over justifiable defense reflects the public's demand for fairness, justice, security and rule of law.
Luo Xiang, a renowned professor of criminal law at China University of Political Science and Law, said in a recent comment about the film Article 20 that the public and judges should avoid taking a "godlike" perspective. Instead, they should consider the situation in which the defender was involved, empathize(共情) with the defender's position, and stop themselves from making excessive demands on the defender, Luo said.
28. Why did the film Article 20 attract the audience's attention
A. It was directed by Zhang Yimou.
B. It explores real-life cases of justifiable defense.
C. It is named after one article in the Criminal Law.
D. It was released during the Spring Festival holiday.
29. According to the Criminal Law, the victim will be free from criminal responsibility when ____.
A. the victim was injured or killed
B. the robber carried murder weapon
C. the victim was hurt worse than the robber
D. the victim knifed the armed robber to stop the ongoing crime
30. What is the function of the case in Kunshan in Paragraph 3
A. Making comparisons. B. Listing reasons.
C. Explaining misconceptions. D. Providing evidence.
31. What does Luo Xiang suggest judges do
A. Take a "godlike" viewpoint with the public. B. Put oneself in the defender's shoes.
C. Demand more from the attacker. D. Side with the defender.
D
Silent reading is far from silent in your brain. Deep within your head there is a voice reading aloud each word as your eyes scan it.
Let's do a seemingly unrelated experiment first. Turn on your television and radio. Try to understand both the words from the television and the radio contemporaneously. You might have noticed understanding one source required ignoring the other, and you could feel your attention shifting between the two voices. Although we can listen to multiple people speaking at the same time, we can only truly understand one person speaking at a time.
There are three major areas that allow you to understand spoken words. The first is the Auditory Cortex (听觉皮层), which processes the pure characteristics of incoming sounds. Both sides of your brain contain this region. The next area is the Broca/ Wernicke (B/W) network, which makes sense of the spoken words. This network exists in only one side of your brain. This means that, although the sounds of language are initially processed in both sides of the brain, spoken words must eventually be funneled (流经漏斗) into this single network. This quickly leads to a bottleneck, which is controlled by the third area: the left Inferior Frontal Gyrus (IFG, 额下回). When you try to understand two people speaking at the same time, this region effectively blocks one voice while it allows the other to pass through the B/W bottleneck. Any information that does not immediately make it through the B/W network disappears completely—there is no wait list.
Now, let's bring all the pieces together to see why it's related to your silent reading. When you read, the first region to demonstrate activation is the Visual Cortex, which processes the pure visual characteristics of incoming sights. Immediately after the visual cortex activates, the speech areas of the brain fire up because your brain processes your silent reading in a manner almost identical to the way in which it processes an actual, out-loud speaking voice. For this reason, attempting to read while listening to someone speak is the same as trying to understand two people speaking at the same time—it can't be done!
32. What does the underlined word "contemporaneously" in paragraph 2 mean
A. At the same time. B. One at a time.
C. On the whole. D. Through comparison.
33. Which of the following best illustrates paragraph 3
A. B.
C. D.
Note: disappear; wait
34. What may the author agree with
A. Students practice listening skills while reading novels.
B. Students solve math problem when following a lecture.
C. Teachers keep silent when students are reading attentively.
D. Professors give a speech with a text-heavy PowerPoint slide.
35. Which of the following can best serve as an introduction to the text
A. The art of conversation lies in listening.
B. Reading is nothing but a silent conversation.
C. We hear and understand only what we already know half.
D. Once an idea gets into your head, it's probably going to stay there.

Journalists are looking out for news stories that attract a significant audience. Timeliness
News gets out of date quickly; it's timely if it happened recently. But how recently 37 11 On a television news channel events that have happened during the past half hour are timely. By contrast, in the monthly magazine events that have taken place over the past 30 days are timely.
Unexpectedness
38 For instance, it is not a newsworthy event that boats travel through the Suez Canal daily. However, a boat getting stuck in the canal and blocking the passageway could be so unexpected and surprising that it makes the headlines.
Currency
Topics that are already under the public spotlight are more likely to be newsworthy. Thus, growing public awareness of global warming has generated more stories about companies producing environmentally friendly products. 39 Journalists can capitalize on the current conversations on different social media platforms to find out what is holding people's interest.
Human interest
People like to know people. Certain events make people feel strong emotions. Both a dying child receiving a donated organ and families reuniting after fifty years are good examples. People's everyday concerns make them feel interested, for instance, stories about food, health and housing. 40
A.We call these "news values".
B.But this is not enough to make a story newsworthy.
C.Strange stories are likely to find their way into the news.
D.It depends on the publication cycle of the news medium.
E.Information about schools and work also catches the public's eye.

Emily was a shy girl who often preferred the comfort of her own company. She found it challenging to express herself and lacked confidence in her abilities. However, her best friend Ada always believed in her and encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone.
One day, as Emily sat in her art class, her teacher, Mrs. Anderson, announced an upcoming art competition. The competition showcased the talents of students from various schools in the city. The room buzzed with excitement. Her mind flashed back to her bedroom where impressive artwork was displayed on the walls, each piece seemingly more attractive than the last. Emily's heart skipped a beat at the thought of participating, but her shyness held her back. Self-doubt crept in, whispering that her work wouldn't measure up to the talent surrounding her. Emily wondered if she had made a mistake by even considering entering.
Ada, noticing Emily's excitement and fear, whispered, "Emily, you should totally enter the competition! Your art is fantastic, and this could be a great opportunity for you to showcase your talent."
Emily hesitated for a moment, contemplating (思忖) Ada's words. A gentle breeze wafted through the open windows, carrying the distant sounds of laughter and chatter from outside. Emily closed her eyes, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She reminded herself of the countless hours she had spent honing (磨炼) her craft, the late nights and early mornings dedicated to perfecting her technique. She had poured her heart and soul into her art, and this competition was a chance to showcase her passion to a wider audience.
With a deep breath, she finally gathered the courage to approach Mrs. Anderson after class. "Mrs. Anderson, I'm interested in participating in the art design competition," Emily said, her voice slightly trembling. Mrs. Anderson smiled warmly, recognizing Emily's potential. "That's wonderful, Emily! I think it's about time you should share your incredible talent with the world. I'll provide you with all the guidance and support you need."

续写
Over the following weeks, Emily dedicated herself to creating her masterpiece. Eyes focused on painting, she spent countless hours sketching, painting, and perfecting her piece, pouring her heart and soul into it. When she met problems, Mrs. Anderson offered valuable and constructive advice while Ada continuously encouraged her to push through her doubts. With the competition approaching, Emily's anxiety grew, but she remained determined to overcome her self-doubts and fears. Her artwork, a breathtaking landscape painting, captured the essence of nature's beauty and well represented the change of her feelings.
On the day of the competition, Emily nervously displayed her artwork alongside the other competitors. Emily's heart raced as the judges evaluated each piece. Finally, the moment of truth arrived. "The winner of the competition is... Emily!" the judge announced. Emily's eyes widened in disbelief. She had won the championship! Her heart was filled with joy and a newfound sense of confidence. The applause from the audience echoed in her ears as she accepted her award with gratitude for Mrs. Anderson's and Ada's unwavering support and encouragement.

(Text 1)
W:Have you noticed that people here in Mexico stand very close together
M:Yes. It's the same in Peru too.
W:It's the opposite in Britain. I was a little uncomfortable here at first. But after a few days, I'm getting used to it.
(Text 2)
W: Are you going to Brian's birthday party tonight
M: Oh my gosh, it totally slipped my mind! I didn't even reply to his invitation. I've got football practice tonight.
W: That's too bad. I'll let him know you're not able to make it.
(Text 3)
M:How are you and your roommate getting along
W:Pretty well. She usually comes home late, but she's always careful not to make any noise in case I'm sleeping. She's very thoughtful.
M:That's nice.
W:Yeah. She's a real change from my old roommate, who only cared about herself.
(Text 4)
M:This town is a healthy place to live in. There are many trees, and the air quality is good. I guess that's because there isn't a lot of industry.
W:Yeah. But no industry means no jobs. It is difficult to find work around here. The city should bring more businesses here.
(Text 5)
M: What an awful month we are having!
W: It's pretty bad, isn't it So hot and wet. It's hard to sleep at night in our dormitory.
M: It's not usually this hot in the fall. Well, I think I'm going to get some more ice cream in the store.
(Text 6)
W: How are you going to get home later, Harry
M: Oh, I can just take a bus or a taxi. There are usually plenty of taxis in front of this restaurant at night.
W: Yes, but not on a Sunday night. You might wait for a long time. Why don't you ask Kevin to drive you home He's having dinner with us and he lives near you.
M: That's right. I'll ask him when he's back from the bathroom.
(Text 7)
M: Hello, I'm a manager from Sunrise Supermarket headquarters to conduct a survey about customer satisfaction. I was wondering if you could tell me a little about your experience in shopping here.
W: Sure, I shop here all the time. It's become a really good place to shop since the owner decided to move here last year.
M: I see, did you shop at Sunrise Supermarket when it was located on Brighton Avenue
W: I went there a few times but the store was so small. I didn't have a wide selection like we have here.
(Text 8)
W: Thanks for letting me borrow the tent, Sam.
M: No problem, Tara. I was worried it'd be too small.
W: It was a little tight but we managed. We'll have to get a big one for next time. Anyway, it was a great camping trip!
M: Are you going again soon
W: No, we're practicing our rock climbing for a little while to get into shape.
M: It's great for building strength! Me and Shelly do it at the climbing center just out of town. It's fun solving the puzzle of how to get up, and exciting too!
W: True that! My gym has a practice wall but we'd like to do it in the wild one day!
M: I have a guide I can recommend. He'll take you to the best climbing spot and it has all the equipment too!
W: Great! Do you want to practice together
M: Sure, I'm going with Shelly at 6 pm tonight.
W: Excellent. I'll meet you at the center then!
(Text 9)
W: John, I want to start an online store for homemade items. I want to sell handmade candles, soap, and other household things.
M: Great idea! It sounds like it can be unique.
W: I've been researching and I found out that this market area is not overly competitive and there's huge demand.
M: So, what's your next step
W: I want to start by reaching out to local artists and see if they're interested in partnering with me and I'd offer a platform for them to sell their products.
M: Good idea! It'd be a win-win for both of you. What about deliveries
W: I've been thinking about that. I want to offer free delivery for orders over a certain amount, and for smaller orders, I'll charge a small fee.
M: And how about packaging
W: I want to make sure the products are packaged well. I'm investing in packaging materials that are recyclable.
M: That sounds great. I'm sure it will be successful. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
W: Thanks, John. I really appreciate it.
(Text 10)
M: Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Crowne Plaza business center at Coogee Beach. I'm David Bowers, your host for the next two days, and I just want to give you some practical information.
OK. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are served all day in the cafe which is just inside the main entrance to the hotel. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 2:30 in the private dining room. This evening you are invited to join the management for drinks by the swimming pool. The General Manager usually makes a short welcome speech.
I'd like to apologize for the temperature. I'm afraid it's a little warmer than usual in here because the air conditioning in the business center is being repaired. However, the work will be completed before lunchtime.
Right. There are some changes to the conference program. Unfortunately, one of the main speakers has canceled her talk and so a couple of the sessions have been canceled or rescheduled. The updated program is being printed at the moment.
