C
Besides healthy soil, all plants also need water. This makes it hard to grow plants where it’s dry. But researchers in Texas may have found a way to keep plants in dry areas from dying of thirst. They have developed a soil additive. When mixed into the ground, it will take water from the air to share with plants.
Their invention is a super-moisture-absorbed gel (凝胶), or SMAG. It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases the water it holds into the root area of the plants.
The gel-based material “can be used as a soil enhancer (强化剂), as well as a replacement for soil in greenhouses for crop planting,” said Mr. Brown. He’s an engineer at the University of Texas-Austin. He led the team that developed the gel. Depending on the plants being grown, he said, this material could be “directly mixed with soil in certain amounts”.
The research decided to use this process to aid plants. The gel they mix with soil absorbs morning dew (露水) and holds it. The next day, the ge l will slowly release that water into the soil.
The engineers tested the soil additive to grow plants on the roof of a building at the school. During an experiment, they compared plants grown only in sandy soil with plants grown in sandy soil that had been mixed with the gel. The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water that it had started with about a month earlier. By comparison, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.
Scientists believe future studies will help them understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. If it can, the water collected by the gel-treated soil could allow crops to be grown in drier climates, where irrigation is not practical.
28.Why did the researchers develop SMAG
A.To make soil much softer.
B.To help soil get extra water.
C.To protect water resources.
D.To increase agricultural output.
29.What can we learn about the use of SMAG
A.It can be mixed with soil.
B.It needs to be used after rain.
C.It should be used in the morning.
D.It can only be suitable for greenhouse crops.
30.How did the engineers test the effect of SMAG
A.By comparing plants in different types of gel-treated soil.
B.By comparing the gel-treated soil on roofs with that in greenhouses.
C.By comparing different plants with the same kind of gel-treated soil.
D.By comparing the water content of the gel-treated soil with that of the normal soil.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Whether SMAG can help with farming in dry areas is uncertain.
B.Scientists will study the side effects of SMAG.
C.SMAG should be tested in cold areas.
D.SMAG is a practical way of irrigation.
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.A
根据第一段“When mixed into the ground, it will take water from the air to share with plants.(当混合到地下时,它会从空气中吸收水分,与植物分享)”以及第二段“Their invention is a super-moisture-absorbed gel (凝胶), or SMAG. It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases the water it holds into the root area of the plants.(他们的发明是一种超吸湿凝胶,简称SMAG。它在夜间从空气中吸收水分。当第二天太阳使它变暖时,这种凝胶就会把它所含的水释放到植物的根部)”可知,SMAG能帮助土壤获得额外的水分。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Depending on the plants being grown, he said, this material could be “directly mixed with soil in certain amounts”.(他说,根据种植的植物,这种材料可以“以一定数量直接与土壤混合”)”可知,SMAG 可以和土壤混合起来使用。故选A。
根据第五段“During an experiment, they compared plants grown only in sandy soil with plants grown in sandy soil that had been mixed with the gel. The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water that it had started with about a month earlier. By comparison, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.(在一项实验中,他们将只在沙土中生长的植物与在混合了凝胶的沙土中生长的植物进行了比较。经过凝胶处理的土壤失去了大约一个月前开始的60%的水分。相比之下,未经处理的土壤在短短一周内就流失了80%的水分)”可知,是通过比较凝胶处理土壤与正常土壤的含水量来检测SMAG的效果。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据第六段“Scientists believe future studies will help them understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. If it can, the water collected by the gel-treated soil could allow crops to be grown in drier climates, where irrigation is not practical.(科学家们相信,未来的研究将帮助他们了解这种凝胶是否可以用于更大的户外田地。如果可以的话,经过凝胶处理的土壤收集的水可以让作物在干旱的气候中生长,而在干旱的气候中,灌溉是不现实的)”可知,SMAG是否能帮助干旱地区的农业还不确定。故选A。
D
It was previously assumed that all irrational fears are learned through personal experience or taught to us by others. If somebody nearly drowns while swimming in these a, for instance, it wouldn’t be surprising if they develop aqua phobia (恐水症), the fear of water. The brain makes a connection between the situation and the feeling of pain and panic, and commits it to memory.
However, it is now thought that some phobias have a genetic origin. Experiments with mice have shown that fears they develop can be passed down to their children and even their grandchildren. The mice were conditioned to fear the scent of acetophenone-a sweet-smelling chemical. Researchers found that the pups, and even the grand-pups,
of the conditioned mice were startled by the scent too.
One explanation for this could be that parent mice communicate with their pups to effectively teach them what to fear. Studies have found that when mice are scared, they release pheromones that act as an alarm signal to other mice. However, in the acetophenone experiment, the pups proved to be sensitive to the scent from the very first time they encountered it. What’s more, some le pups; of conditioned mice were fostered by non-conditioned mice. The non-conditioned foster parents were not a fad of the scent, but the pups were, suggesting the fears origin was genetic rather than social.
It is not clear exactly how the conditioned fear is passed on to future generations of mice, but the current theory is that it is down to something called epigenetic inheritance The original conditioning process leads to chemical modifications that change gene expression, without changing the DNA sequence itself. The researchers found that he conditioned mice and their offspring developed more scent receptors in their brains compared to non-conditioned mice. With more of these receptors they can detect the presence of acetophenone at lower concentrations and so are alerted to it more easily.
Epigenetics is a relatively new area of research, but it stands to reason that fears and other memories may well be inherited this way in humans too.
32.What does the underlined word “conditioned” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Trained
B.Inherited.
C.Displayed.
D.Evolved
33.What can we learn from the acetophenone experiment
A.The scent of acetophenone is inherently frightening to mice.
B.Parental behavior has no influence on the fears of offspring in mice.
C.Learned fears can be genetically transmitted across generations in mice.
D.Pups of conditioned mice are unable to adapt to the scent of acetophenone.
34.How may the conditioned fear be passed on to future generations of mice
A.By altering the DNA sequence.
B.Through changes in gene expression.
C.Through social learning from parent mice.
D.By increasing the number of scent receptors.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.Aqua phobia: A Case Study on Learned Fears
B.Pheromones: The Communication of Fear in Mice
C.The Genetics of Fear: Epigenetic Inheritance in Mice
D.Phobia Development: The Role of Personal Experience
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.B 35.C
根据划线词后文“fear the scent of acetophenone-a sweet-smelling chemical”以及“Researchers found that the pups, and even the grand-pups, of the conditioned mice were startled by the scent too.(研究人员发现,小鼠的幼崽,甚至是幼崽,也会被这种气味吓到)”可知,老鼠被训练害怕苯乙酮的气味,而小鼠的幼崽,甚至是幼崽,也会被这种气味吓到。 故选A。
根据第二段“Experiments with mice have shown that fears they develop can be passed down to their children and even their grandchildren.(用老鼠做的实验表明,它们产生的恐惧会遗传给它们的孩子,甚至孙子)”可知,我们能从苯乙酮实验中了解到习得性恐惧可以遗传给老鼠的后代。故选C。
根据倒数第二段“It is not clear exactly how the conditioned fear is passed on to future generations of mice, but the current theory is that it is down to something called epigenetic inheritance (表观遗传). The original conditioning process leads to chemical modifications that change gene expression, without changing the DNA sequence itself.(目前还不清楚这种条件性恐惧是如何传递给后代的,但目前的理论是,这是一种被称为表观遗传的东西。原始条件作用过程导致化学修饰,改变基因表达,而不改变DNA序列本身)”可知,条件性恐惧通过基因表达的改变传递给后代。故选B。
35.主旨大意题。根据第二段“However, it is now thought that some phobias have a genetic origin. Experiments with mice have shown that fears they develop can be passed down to their children and even their grandchildren.(然而,现在认为一些恐惧症有遗传根源。用老鼠做的实验表明,它们产生的恐惧会遗传给它们的孩子,甚至孙子)”以及最后一段“Epigenetics is a relatively new area of research, but it stands to reason that fears and other memories may well be inherited this way in humans too.

故填at。
故填are prepared。
故填a。
此空为非谓语动词作补语,根据固定搭配be required to do sth. 故填to maintain。
故填 that。

Dear James,

Yours sincerely,

Dear James,
I hope this email finds you well. I'm writing to express our class's gratitude for your thoughtful plan to celebrate our first prize at the school's English Drama Festival. We truly appreciate your enthusiasm and support!
I've conducted a survey on how my classmates would prefer to celebrate. The results are quite revealing: 88% would enjoy an outing on the weekend, 59% are interested in watching English movies, and 32% suggested sharing food and drinks.
Given these preferences, I recommend organizing a weekend outing. This option not only received the highest interest but would also allow us to enjoy the outdoors and engage in various activities together, making
us more united. It's a perfect way to relax, have fun, and bond further outside of school.
Thank you again for your encouragement and support. Hoping that my suggestions will be taken on board.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body. Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer.
When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, ''My ears, Mommy.'' She said, ''No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon.''
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had thought about the correct answer. So this time I told her, ''Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.” She looked at me and told me, “You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind.
Over the years my mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was : ''No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child.''
Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final goodbye to Grandpa. She asked me, ''Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear '' I was shocked when she asked me this on this occasion. I always thought this was a game between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told, ''This question is very important. How you answer it shows whether you have learned about life. ''For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you were wrong and I have given a reason why. But today is the day you will know the answer.
I looked puzzled.
''All your previous answers -- ears, eyes, hands, heart They are all very important to yourself. But this time I need you think of something that is important to others.''

''Mom, I understand. And you can cry on my shoulder, too.''
__________________________________
“My dear, the most important body part,” she said, “is your shoulder.” I was surprised by her answer. “Shoulder ” I asked, not quite understanding. She nodded and explained, “Yes, your shoulder.”“Is it because it holds
up your head ” I asked. “No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or loved one when they cry,” she replied, “It’s the place where people can lean on when they're feeling weak or sad. It’s the place where they can cry their hearts out without feeling judged or alone. Your shoulder is a symbol of love, comfort, and support. It’s what makes us human and connects us to each other. My dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends so that you will always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it.” I saw her eyes well up with tears.
“Mom, I understand. And you can cry on my shoulder too.” And silently, my mother put her head on my shoulder and started to cry. It was not heavy at all and the wetness didn’t make me uncomfortable either. In fact when her warm tears damped my shoulder, I felt the pain in her heart, and I knew how hurt and lonely and vulnerable she was at that moment. I felt important. I felt like a man. I was there when someone I loved dearly needed me most. From that day on, I understood why my mother had been asking me the question all these years. The most important body part is not just a physical feature, but a symbol of love, care, and support for others. And I will always remember to offer my shoulder to those who need it.

Researchers found that the pups, and even the grand-pups, of the conditioned mice were startled by the scent too.

Have you got any electronic devices hanging around your home that you no longer want or use Between us, we have millions of bits of unused tech kept in drawers. 36 There are several ways to make the most of our unwanted gadgets (小物件).
Probably the best cure for our throwaway culture is to fix our broken tech. 37 They can be learned at repair clubs and repair cafés — free meeting places where you'll find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. In the UK, the interest in mending our stuff and giving it a new life is reflected by the popularity of a TV series called The Repair Shop, where craftspeople rescue and resurrect (重新使用) items that their owners thought were beyond saving.
38 Materials used to make them can be extracted and reused in other things. As an example, Elisabeth Ratcliffe from the Royal Society of Chemistry told the BBC: “There are about thirty different elements just in a smartphone, and many of them are very rare.” These can be used in touch screens and solar panels. Many of the biggest players in the industry (including Apple and Samsung) will gladly take your old gadgets back and handle them responsibly. 39
A final choice for your unwanted items is to up-cycle them. You can breathe new life into them by transforming them into valuable pieces or collectable retroitems (复古物品), which could be sold on. 40 By up-cycling, you contribute to waste reduction and innovation in product reuse.
A.Recycling is another solution.
B.All you need is patience and skills.
C.Another cure is to give them away.
D.However, they don't need to be thrown away.
E.You can have fun in repair clubs and repair cafés.
F.You can make some cash and create needed space in your home.
G.You might even get some cash back when buying their new products.
