In August 2022, Don Powell from Orchard Lake Village, Michigan, found a wooden doll(玩具娃娃)couple, Mary and Shelley, inside his custom-designed mailbox. Initially assuming it was a mistake, he left them there out of curiosity. Over time, the dolls’ living space expanded with the addition of furniture like a bed, a painting and a stove. Don responded humorously, requesting a refrigerator. A year later, the dolls still reside there, amusing neighbors who follow updates on the local Nextdoor page.
The Powells had paid a local craftsman(工匠)$250 to create a mailbox that looked like their house, which included windows and solar-powered ceiling lights. This mailbox provided a large and bright space for the growing collection of doll furnishings.
Despite potential fines for non-postage items in mailboxes, Don didn’t consider removing the dolls, as the mail carrier found it amusing and it didn’t stop mail delivery. The Powells regularly discovered new items for the dolls, especially during holidays. For example, Halloween saw the dolls temporarily disappearing and replaced by skeletons(骨骼), and Christmas brought festive decorations.
The doll family grew, with the addition of a cousin, Shirley, and a service dog named Maggie. A note mentioned their gratitude for a one-story house compared to their previous multi-story dollhouse.
Don even contributed to the setup by adding a small letterbox to avoid confusion with their mail. He enjoys the mystery and community enjoyment, resisting the idea of an outdoor camera to uncover the responsible party. The story continues to attract neighbors, who often stop by with questions and enjoy the lighthearted community spirit it brings.

When Hurricane Ian made landfall on the southwest Florida coast as a Category 4 storm, it brought strong winds and heavy rain. It was a deadly hurricane, attacking more than four million people, and causing serious flooding and at least 150 deaths. However, during the disaster, there was one innovative community that weathered the storm well: Babcock Ranch, the brainchild of Syd Kitson.
Located 30miles inland, Babcock Ranch is an environmentally friendly and fully sustainable town that Syd Kitson and his partners hoped would be hurricane proof. Its homes are built to go through severe weather without losing essential services like electricity, water, or the Internet. A significant factor in its design is that power and Internet lines are buried to avoid wind damage. Additionally, large ponds surround the development to protect houses from flooding. As a backup, streets are designed to absorb floodwaters and spare the houses.
Central to Babeock Ranch’s sustainability is its extensive use of solar energy. The community possesses an 870-acre solar farm with 700,000 individual panels operated by Florida Power & Light, capable of powering 30,000 homes—far more than the 5,000 residents currently living there. At night and on cloudy days, a natural gas generator kicks in to fill the gap.
Hurricane Ian served as a true test for the community. While the surrounding regions suffered, Babcock Ranch’s minimum damage and quick recovery showcased its effective design against natural disasters. Residents even opened their community center, doubling as a storm shelter, to the victims from other hard-hit communities.
Kitson’s vision for Babcock Ranch is not just about creating a sustainable and resilient(适应性强的)community but also about learning and improving. He hopes that the lessons learned from Babcock Ranch can be applied to other developments, contributing to more climate-resilient communities across the United States. This approach reflects a growing awareness of the need for sustainable and resilient urban planning in the face of increasing climate challenges.

30. What is the central theme of the fourth paragraph
A. Babcock Ranch’s community and social life. 3

When children are growing up, what they see in their families is what they tend to consider normal. That means family traditions and other activities are generally seen as just normal. If a family eats dinner together or spends time talking with each other, that’s what the child absorbs and internalizes.
Our family traditions are declining as we move toward a more isolated(孤立的)society. How many families no longer share meals around the dinner table, instead choosing to watch TV or text friends on their phones This tends to isolate and disconnect family members from each other. It also stops families from communicating and catching up on each other’s lives.
For those of us who grew up in a household where families shared meals together and spent time talking with each other, chances are that we are passing along those traditions to our own families. The problem is, children today often want to spend their time in front of screens rather than people. Cell phones, computers and other attention-grabbing devices often mean parents get resistance to traditional family togetherness time. This pressure can lead to parents giving in and letting children do what they want rather than fight with them over sitting at the dinner table. This creates a new normal that no longer values the idea of families and the society at large, connecting with each other.
Family and community traditions are important, not just for the current shared experiences, but for the future as well. Since children internalize their experiences, that means generations to come may not know what it’s like to sit together around the dinner table and truly connect as a family.
That is why it is so important that parents and caregivers create boundaries of behavior that help to keep family traditions alive. If you remember the shared experiences you had with your parents and grandparents you know the important bonding that took place during those times. It is this shared experience that brings people closer together and is well worth preserving.
32. What is the phenomenon the author describes at the beginning of the text
A. The increase in shared family meals means a shift towards isolation.
B. Increased use of technology replaces traditional family interactions.
C. More and more children prefer to spend quality time with the family.
D. Family members are more likely to share their updates with each other.
33. What is the central concern expressed in paragraph 3
A. The inability of parents to understand technology.
B. The challenge of preserving traditional family values.
C. The influence of technology on children’s education.
D. The necessity of controlling children’s digital devices.
34. What can be inferred about future generations if current trends continue
A. They will be more addicted to advanced technology.
B. They will maintain stronger and closer family bonds.
C. They may create new and irreplaceable family traditions.
D. They may not understand the value of family gatherings.
35. How does the author view the role of parents in preserving family traditions
A. Insignificant B. Irresponsible
C. Crucial D. Overemphasized

第四部分:写作(共两节,满分40分)
Dear Chris,
I am delighted to hear from you. You inquired me in your last letter about our school’s labor course and the following information may give you a rough sketch.
To nurture the students ‘sound outlook on labor and enhance their social awareness, the labor course is on the curriculum. Colorful labor programs are open every week, ranging from labor practice on campus, community service to voluntary work. We conducted a social practice in the Hope Community last Saturday. We were assigned different tasks—collecting the scattered garbage, cleaning the noticeboard, and offering timely assistance to those in need. We impressed all the community residents with high enthusiasm, conscientious attitude and attentive service.
Most of us are fascinated by the course because it enables us to learn real-life skills that include responsibility, problem-solving and working as part of a team.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
“Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But determination shone from his eyes. The coach looked at him with mixed emotions. Admittedly, he kept him in the team because he always put his heart and soul to every practice, and provided the other members with the spirit and cheering they badly needed. He knew how much this game meant to the young man, especially after the loss of his father. Finally he gave in. He nodded and said, “Alright, Thomas. Get out there and show them what you’ve got.” Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes.
This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. He ran, passed, and tackled like a star. He seemed to have found a hidden talent within himself, fueled by the memory of his father. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid intercepted a pass and ran all the way for winning a last killing! The crowd erupted in cheers, and his teammates lifted him upon their shoulders celebrating his triumph. Thomas became a heroin that moment. His father’s words echoed in his mind: sometimes, it was the underdog who surprised everyone and emerged as the true champion. Thomas was sure that his father was watching from above, proud of the football player he had become.

M: This movie is really boring. Let’s just leave and get something to eat. Then we can go home.
W: We can’t do that. Don’t you want to know what will happen in the end
(Text2)
W: Do you speak Italian
M: No. I’d really like to learn it. I speak Spanish and French quite well. So it shouldn’t be too hard.
(Text3)
M: Do you still play basketball
W: I do, but I’m ready for a change. I’ve always wanted to try skiing, but there isn’t anywhere near here where you can ski. So that’s why I decided on tennis instead. The rugby club is looking for players, but rugby seems dangerous tome.
(Text4)
M: I like my room very much. It’s got big windows, so I get plenty of sunshine.
W: I do too, though it’s a pity I can’t turn the central heating up. It’s cold. The traffic noise keeps waking my flat mate up! But I’m on the inside of the building, so I hardly notice it.
(Text5)
W: The school climbing group managed to reach the top of the mountain. Did they put the school flag at the top
M: No, they were not allowed to do that. So they just ended up taking photos of themselves. I’d set offloads of fireworks to celebrate if I managed to climb up a mountain like that.
(Text6)
M: I’m getting ready for a meeting with the HR manager. I’m going to ask to employ two more people. Anything you’d like me to say
W: I’d like someone in our department to give the new workers more training. The last young woman was unfamiliar with the system that we use. She learned it at last, but she would have spent less time on learning if she had been trained more.
M: That’s a good point. I’ll mention that. If they agree, would you like to be responsible for the new hires’ training
W: Sure, I’d be happy to do that.
(Text7)
W: Hello. What can I do for you, sir
M: I like this shirt, but it’s big for me. Do you have a smaller size
W: What size do you usually wear
M: I usually wear the large size, but can you give me a medium one
W: OK. Which color do you like We have four different colors—black, blue, white and brown.
M: All of them are great, but can I try on a white one
W: Yes, of course.
M: It fits me well. I will take it. How much is it
W: It usually sells at$180, but you can get a10%discount if you buy it today.
(Text8)
W: Good morning. What can I do for you
M: Well, I want to find apart-time job in the coming vacation.
W: OK. Uh, let me see, there are several part-time jobs for you to choose. Cleaner in a business building, teacher of a middle school student, salesman in No. 1 Market and guide in a zoo. Which one do you prefer
M: Could you please tell me more about the job as a guide
W: Of course. The Center Zoo is employing students to work in vacations. The pay is13 pounds a day.
M: 13 pounds a day It is good. How many days do I have to work per week
W: You need to work from5: 00 p. m. to 9: 30 p. m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. And you have to work from 9: 00 a. m. to 6: 30 p. m. on Saturday and Sunday.
M: It sounds acceptable.
W: By the way, are you planning to work during the whole vacation
M: Yes.
W: Good. Another question, are you interested in continuing to do the job next term
M: No, I’m afraid I won’t take any job next term, for I need to concentrate on my schoolwork.
(Text9)
M: Hi, Miss Rowling, how old were you when you started to write
W: I wrote my first story when I was about six. It was about a small rabbit.
M: Why did you choose to be an author
W: Well, I was fond of writing as a little girl. Everyone is trying to find a way to achieve happiness. Step one would be, without doubt, finding out what you love doing most. Step two would be finding someone to pay you to do this. I consider myself very lucky indeed that I’m able to support myself by writing.
M: Do you have any plans to write books for adults
W: Maybe. But I never really imagine who my audience is while writing. The ideas come first. So it really depends on the ideas that come to me next.
(Text10)
M: When I was young, I dreamed of being a famous painter. I was so crazy about painting that I painted everywhere whenever I was free. My mother was often mad at me when she saw my paintings everywhere on the walls in our house. She always hoped that I could be a doctor. I guess she wanted me to follow my father’s footsteps. My father however, expected me to become a photographer. He even bought me a camera and all kinds of professional books and encouraged me to attend youth photo contests. However, as you can see boys and girls, I finally became a teacher. As for me, I am still good at painting. It’s a great way to relax in my spare time. I also love photography and traveling. In our next class meeting, I will talk to you about that.
