On a bright September day in the French Alps in 2022, John McAvoy was 38 kilometres into the
ultramarathon through rugged mountain paths. Battling exhaustion, he pushed his body and mind through the
final stretch of the race. In that moment, McAvoy welled up with emotion, feeling so free and alive.
Having just completed a ten-year prison term for armed robbery in the UK, John McAvoy, now 40, has
spent the past decade rehabilitating himself, trying to reshape his life with purpose. After his release, he
began speaking at schools and young offenders' institutions. But it was on this day, while running the Mont
Blanc race, that he realized how impactful conquering this mountain run could be for inner-city kids. After all,
sport had helped him open up his world. It could do the same for others.
McAvoy's troubled history, marked by the absence of his father and the influence of his stepfather, Billy
Tobinan, an infamous bank robber, steered him towards a path of criminality. He entered jail at 19 and faced
jail again in his early 20s. McAvoy's turning point came when his best friend, Aaron, died in a police chase
following a robbery. He vowed to distance himself from bad influences and threw himself into training in the
prison gym, where his athletic skills caught the attention of officer Darren Davis. Guided by Davis, McAvoy
achieved multiple rowing records. Upon his release in 2012, McAvoy embraced a professional athletic career
while advocating for prison reform and youth in sports.
Assisted by Youth Beyond Borders, McAvoy started the Alpine Run Project, leading 12 disadvantaged
British youth through their own Mont Blanc races. McAvoy said the significant moment for him was watching
Yasmin Mahamud, a 20-year-old Syrian refugee, run through the finish arch and into the arms of her new
friends. Mahamud kept running, took up martial arts and went to university to study physiotherapy.
24. What does the underlined word "rehabilitating" in paragraph 2 mean
A. Calming. B. Pitying. C. Entertaining. D. Transforming.
25. What made McAvoy decide to change the course of his life
A. Aaron's death after an attempted robbery. B. An unfavorable growing environment.
C. Two prison terms that he served. D. Davis' recognition of his athletic abilities.
26. Why is Yasmin Mahamud mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To exhibit her athletic performance. B. To stress her academic achievements.

A. Demanding and encouraging. B. Sympathetic and determined.

Why are some people more motivated to handle difficult things And is there a way to make doing
difficult things easy To answer this question, we need to look at this: dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is often
considered a pleasure molecule (分子). But that’s not quite what it does. Dopamine is what makes us desire
things. And it’s that desire that gives us the motivation to get up and do things.
In fact, your brain considers something more important than others mainly depending on how much
dopamine it’s expecting to get. If an activity releases too little dopamine, you won’t have much motivation to
do it. But if an activity releases a lot of dopamine, you’ll be motivated to repeat it, over and over. So which
behavior releases dopamine Any activity where you expect there’s a possible reward releases it.
And in today’s digital society, we are flooding our brains with unnaturally high amounts of dopamine on
a daily basis, even if we don’t know it. Some examples of high dopamine behavior include: visiting social
media websites, playing video games, etc.
And you might think, “Oh so what It’s not like it’s harming me in any way.” But you’d be wrong. Our
bodies have a biological system called homeostasis (体内动态平衡 ). Whenever an imbalance occurs, our
body adapts to it. Basically your brain gets used to having high levels of dopamine and those levels become
your new normal. Thus you develop a dopamine tolerance. This can be a huge problem because the things that
don`t give you as much dopamine don’t interest you any longer. That’s why people tend to prefer playing
video games or surfing the Internet, compared to studying or working on their business.
But it is possible to make doing difficult things feel easier. Separate yourself from the unnaturally high
amounts of dopamine, or at least expose yourself to it far less frequently. Only then will normal, everyday,
low dopamine activities become exciting again and you’ll be able to do them for longer. That’s why you might
want to limit your phone and computer usage, along with other high dopamine-releasing behavior.
We are all dopamine addicts to a certain extent. And that’s a good thing because dopamine motivates us
to achieve our goals and improve ourselves. But it’s up to you to decide where you’re going to get your
dopamine. Are you going to get it from things that don’t benefit you Or are you going to get it from working
on your long-term goals The choice is yours.
28.According to the passage, dopamine is what __________.
A.determines our mindset B.enables us to tackle difficult tasks
C.motivates us to act D.causes our emotions
29.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about
A.The adaptability of our brain.
B.The biological system called homeostasis.
C.The imbalance of the dopamine levels.
D.The problem of dopamine tolerance.
30.What does the author suggest to make doing difficult things feel easier
A.Reducing the usage of digital devices.
B.Making difficult things more exciting
C.Forcing our body to adapt to dopamine.
D.Exposing ourselves more to social media.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Being addicted to dopamine benefits us.
B.Dopamine can be made use of to better ourselves.

Campaigners opposing the building of new wind farms often point to the possibility that the blades of
wind turbines (涡轮机) can cut careless birds to bits. No one doubts that wind turbines kill some birds. But a
new analysis of American data, published in Environmental Science & Technology, suggests the numbers have
little impact on bird populations.
Wind power has expanded dramatically in America over the past 20 years. Many studies have analysed
the effects in specific locations or on specific bird species. But few have looked at the effects on wildlife at the
population level. Dr. Katovich, an economist at the University of Geneva, used the Christmas Bird Count, a
citizen-science project. Volunteers count birds they spot over Christmas, and the society edits the numbers. Its
records stretch back over a century.
Dr. Katovich assumed, reasonably, that if wind turbines harmed bird populations, then the numbers seen
in the Christmas Bird Count would drop in places where new turbines had been built. He combined bird
population and species maps with the locations and construction dates of all wind turbines in America, with
the exceptions of Alaska and Hawaii, between 2000 and 2020. He found that building turbines had no obvious
effect on bird populations. That reassuring finding held even when he looked specifically at large birds that
many people believe are particularly easy to be struck.
Dr. Katovich didn’t limit his analysis to wind power alone. He also examined oil-and-gas extraction (提
取). Like wind power, this has boomed in America over the past paring bird populations to the
locations of new gas wells revealed an average 15% drop in bird numbers when new wells were drilled,
probably due to a combination of noise, air pollution and the disturbance of rivers and ponds that many birds
rely upon. When drilling happened in places designated by experts as “important bird areas”, bird numbers
instead dropped by 25%. Such places are typically migration hubs, feeding grounds or breeding locations.
Wind power, in other words, not only produces far less planet-heating gas than fossil fuels. It appears to
be significantly less damaging to wildlife, too. Wind turbines might look dramatic, but their effect on birds
isn’t.
32.What does a new analysis find about wind farms
A.They take the lives of careless birds. B.They improve birds’ living conditions.
C.They do little harm to bird populations. D.Their harmful effects on birds vary a lot.
33.How did Dr. Katovich make the finding
A.By counting bird numbers in different locations.
B.By relating bird numbers to turbines’ distribution.
C.By researching perfect places to build turbines.
D.By studying the decline of birds near turbines.
34.What contributes most to the drop of bird numbers
A.The wide spread of wind turbines. B.The over-development of farming.
C.The lack of environmental concern. D.The drilling of wells for oil and gas.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Wind Turbines and Birds Can Co-exist
B.Oil Drilling Shares the Sky With Birds
C.Several Factors Lead to Bird Decline
D.Campaigners Oppose Bird Disturbance

new — If only parenting were so easy. 36 Here are expert-approved tips on how to get your kids to
attempt new things without frightening them off.
Start with what they know. Take something your kids already like or are good at, and push them to try it
in a new environment or a slightly different way. If you want your kids to feel confident about their strengths
and use that as a springboard to try something new, think: 37 How can you help them advance in that
There is no need to learn a new thing — you just create an opportunity to push your kids to try something new
with the skill they know.
Make a list. Ask your children what new things they want to try out or have them write a list. Help them
figure out what it is that they are worried about when they avoid new things. 38 It’s a way to help
them feel in charge of their emotions and understand the connection between thoughts and actions.
39 You should both recognize your children’s fears and express certainty that they can handle
the task. It is important to project confidence in your children. Say you believe they have capacity to handle
those challenges and tolerate the discomfort or worries or negative feelings that might come along with doing
new or scary things.
Consider if they are doing enough. You should also do some reflecting of your own. Do your children
really need to try tofu or martial arts If your kids are functioning overall, they are doing the basics and they
have some friends, then be encouraging. 40 Sometimes doing that stops you from focusing on the
things they are doing.
A.Sympathize and encourage.
B.Be tolerant and open-minded.
C.What are your kids comfortable with
D.Why are your kids fascinated by new things
E.Don’t overstress on everything they are not doing.
F.Sometimes the act of identifying and naming fears can help decrease them.
G.Trying new things is difficult for many children, whether a different food or skill.

Isla and I were studying in the same school. We had been friends since we were six years old. I took Isla
as a smart, funny friend, but not all students at our school did, especially the girl students. Girls in our school
wore fashionable branded clothes, but Isla sewed hers and her curly hair and thick glasses made her look like
a fish, which made her stand out like a sore thumb(招眼).
For me, sometimes I felt embarrassed to be around Isla, particularly when students said rude words about
her hair, clothes, glasses—even about the fact that she got really good grades. Isla always seemed to be able to
ignore what other students thought, but I couldn’t. I began to distance myself from her.
Our school had a tradition— there was a talent show every spring. Students would sing, dance, play
musical instruments, and do whatever they could to show their talents. Being our graduation season in this
senior school, this year’s talent show would be obviously different. It would be a huge night.
Ava, who was an outgoing girl, invited me to be on her dance team. “We win the talent show every year,
and we expect a satisfactory graduation this year,” Ava said to me excitedly. "We need a new dancer. But only
you, not her!” Ava pointed to someone behind me.
I didn’t need to turn around to see who she meant. “Oh, I see,” I said quietly. Ava had hardly headed out
when someone tapped on my shoulder. It was Isla. When I saw her confused face, it was like waking up from
a dream. Isla asked me eagerly, “Emily, are you going to take part in the talent show ” I hesitated without
response. “That’s great, Emily!” Isla told me without waiting for my answer that she was also going to
participate this year. I couldn’t believe what I had heard. I started to worry about her when I imagined that she
was in front of a huge crowd, and that everybody would laugh at her.
Time passed quickly, and I had barely seen Isla since then. For me, I had to practice hard every day with
Ava and the team to keep up since the other dancers had already known the steps.

Ultimately, it was my turn to perform, and I felt extremely nervous. I didn’t want to be regarded as
different from the others. Isla walked to me and hugged me tightly. “Come on, Emily!” Isla encouraged me. “I
believe you will do great because you are a wonderful dancer. Don’t care too much about what others think.
Just trust yourself.” Soon, I took my place on the stage. I remembered every step and every move. When the
music was over, the crowd burst into cheers. At that moment, I felt like a dancing queen!
I stepped off the stage and expressed my thanks to Isla, who was ready to sing. I was a little worried at
the beginning because the crowd became restless. Luckily, Isla ignored it. I stood up, shouting, “Isla, you are
the best!” Her homemade dress was shining in the light, but her eyes were clouded with tears. When Isla’s
singing died down, all the students were still lost in her unique voice. Some even began singing like her, and
then more. Their singing resounded around the hall. I rushed to the stage after her performance, hugging her
cheerfully. That was enough! We could never be distanced.

M: Sure. You’ve been a great help in the past weeks. I hope you can go to Beijing sometime so that I can do the
same for you.
W: Just don’t mention it. So when will your flight take off
M: In just an hour, I think I should go and have my ticket checked.
W: Well, have a great journey!
M: Thank you.
(Text 7)
W: What are you reading, Jack
M: A health report about findings on loneliness.
W: What does it say
M: It says recent research is helping challenge the idea that loneliness mainly affects older people.
W: What does that mean
M: According to the research, young adults are more likely to feel lonely than those aged 65 and over. Generation Z
have the highest rates of loneliness compared to other age groups.
W: Luckily, I have many friends. But Mark living upstairs seems very lonely. He lives alone and hardly smiles.
(Text 8)
M: Good afternoon. I’m here to reprint a brochure for our hotel. Some pages need revising.
W: What exactly is the problem
M: Well, some information is already out of date. There are also a couple of problems with the design. Firstly, the
letters on the front page are far too small. So, increase the letters by 3 sizes.
W: OK, what else
M: The information regarding the pool should be deleted on page 2.
W: But we can’t just leave the whole page blank.
M: Just fill it in with the introduction of our newly-opened gym.
W: I see.
M: What’s also bothering us is the description under the top photo on page 4. You can replace the word
with“reception”.
W: Is that all
M: No, there is more. Turn to page 5. You’d better use a picture with the view of the hotel.
W: OK.
M: Let’s turn to the next page. According to the customers, the prices do not stand out, so change the print from
black to red or blue to make it pop out.
W: I got it.
(Text 9)
M: Hello. Brian Parks speaking.

M: Fine. It’s a Mini and it’s grey ... doesn’t show the dirt!
W: Have you been the only owner
M: No, I’m the second one.
W: Now about the price, I see you’ve got it down as one thousand, two hundred and fifty pounds. So would you be
prepared to go down to one thousand
M: That’s really too low.
W: One thousand, one hundred
M: I might be able to go to that.
W: You say it’s in good condition.
M: There were no major problems. The only thing is that you’d have to get a new tyre and a wiper in the near
future though they are still OK. And the garage also mentioned that one headlight could probably do with replacing
immediately.
W: So, would it be possible for him to see the car tomorrow
M: Tomorrow Wednesday I’m afraid not.
W: Well, the day after that
M: That’d be fine, yeah.

Welcome to Camber’s Park. I’ll tell you some amazing things we offer.
Camber’s Park offers more than other theme parks. Like them, we have various exciting rides for all ages, but
Camber’s Park also places strong emphasis on the educational experience for its visitors. Although it’s mainly an
outdoor experience, we do have some indoor activities if the weather gets terrible.
The park was set up in 1997 by the Camber family but then taken over by new owners in 2004. Camber’s Park
has over forty-five different rides and exhibits. All but one of these are free once you have paid your entrance fee.
We charge a small fee for our newest ride.
Then, I’ll tell you three major rides. Our newest ride is the River Adventure. No amount of protective clothing
would make any difference, so only go on this ride if you’re prepared to get wet! Children under eight can go on
this ride, but all under sixteen must have an adult with them. Our Jungle Jim Rollercoaster is created for whole
family enjoyment. Carriages have comfortable seating for up to eight people, with safety belts which must be worn
at all times. Last, we have Swoop Slide. There are no age or height restrictions. Be careful though ---- you must
have on long trousers so you won’t get any speed burns!
So come and make a day of it at Camber’s Theme Park!
