When the need for information technology service arises, it can be a stressful moment- the user is locked out of their computer, or a program isn’t working properly. But if you ask anyone in the MIT departments of Chemistry and Physics, or the News Office—the Institute divisions that are fortunate enough to have Greg Walton as their IT service provider, they’ll acknowledge that not only is Walton the best, but whatever the issue is, he will see it through until all involved are satisfied with the outcome. Walton usually arrives on the scene with endless positive energy that transforms a technical annoyance into an enjoyable interaction, regardless of how many other IT fires he has already put out that day.
The qualities that make him a star employee extend far beyond the campus. After spending his early years in foster care, Walton lived with his great-grandmother, but mostly, he was left to support himself. While many children might, understandably, lie flat under such unsupervised circumstances, Walton excelled academically and athletically at high school. He became the first person in his family to graduate from high school, and enrolled in college.
Walton seized the chance to enroll in Year Up, a program aiming to close the “opportunity divide” by providing young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. Walton remains an active ambassador for the organization.
In June of 2007, armed with shining recommendations, Walton was hired as a temp (临时工) at MIT. He eventually worked his way up to where he is today—an invaluable asset to three departments. “I do feel lucky to work at MIT,” he says. “I’ve had the ability to tour the country sharing my story in hopes that some people may be inspired and employers may see young adults with tough backgrounds differently.”
In addition to Year Up, he is involved with a number of organizations committed to helping young adults overcome their troubled pasts. This desire to have a positive impact on people’s lives extends seamlessly into his work at MIT. “Giving back is very important to me,” Walton says. “So many people have invested their time and energy into helping me, so I feel it would be an injustice not to do so.”
24. Staff members in MIT sing high praise for Walton mainly because ____________.
A. he enjoys interacting with his clients B. he knows how to put out fires for others
C. he solves problems with a positive attitude D. he is good at developing computer programs
25. What do we know about Walton before he went to college
A. He depended on his great-grandma for a living
B. He stood out in study and sports in high school.
C. He lay flat just like other unsupervised children.
D. He was supported by foster care for better education.
26. Why did Walton get involved with a lot of organizations
A. To share his troubled past with young adults
B. To pay back to society by helping young adults.
C. To advise businesses to treat young adults fairly
D. To promote education equality among young adults.
27. What can we conclude from Walton’s story
A. One good turn deserves another
B. Opportunities favor the prepared mind
C. Education is a powerful weapon to change the world.
D. One’s future is defined by his efforts, not by his origin.
C
Gentle sound stimulation, also known as pink noise, may significantly enhance deep sleep in older adults and improve their ability to recall words, a new study has found.
Deep sleep is critical for memory consolidation. However, beginning in middle age, deep sleep decreases substantially, which scientists believe contributes to memory loss in aging. The sound stimulation significantly enhanced deep sleep in participants and their scores on a memory test. “This is an innovative, simple and safe non-medication approach that may help improve brain health,” said Phyllis Zee, professor at Northwestern University in the US. This is a potential tool for enhancing memory in older populations and attenuating normal age- related memory decline,” said Zee.
Zee and a team of researchers gathered 13 adults, 60 and older, and monitored their sleep in a lab for two nights. On both nights, the participants took a memory test, went to bed while wearing headphones and a special cap, and took another memory test in the morning. But without the participants’ awareness, researchers only played pink noise into the headphones on one night. More specifically, they timed the sounds to match the participants’ slow-wave oscillations (波动). During deep sleep, brain waves slow to about one oscillation per second, compared to about ten oscillations per second during wakefulness. The system they employed in the study allowed the team to deliver a low burst of pink noise at the “precise moment” when the participants’ slow waves rose— a pattern that is unique to each person.
The study found that participants’ slow waves increased after the night of sound stimulation, suggesting that they were getting more deep sleep. And on the morning after hearing pink noise, they performed three times better on memory tests than they did after sleeping without any sound stimulation.
Previous research showed pink noise during deep sleep could improve memory consolidation in young people. But it has not been tested in older adults. The new study targeted older individuals and used a novel sound system that increased the effectiveness of the sound stimulation in older populations.
The study was a relatively small one, so further research is needed to confirm its findings and to study how longer-term use of pink noise affects sleep. But Northwestern has taken steps to patent the researchers’ technology, which seems to have hit upon a way to stimulate slow waves at the right moment. The team hopes to develop an affordable device that people can use at home, from the comfort of their beds.
28. The new study mainly reveals that ____________.
A. deep sleep consolidates old adults’ memory
B. pink noise boosts memory among the elderly
C. sleep disorders play a key role in memory loss
D. sound stimulation increases the length of sleep
29. The word “attenuating” in the second paragraph most probably means
A. worsening B. reversing C. slowing down D. bringing about
30. What can be learned about the new study
A. It employed a sound system programmed in step with brain waves.
B. It compared the effects on older adults and on younger populations.
C. It repeated the experiment several times without the participants’ notice.
D. It adjusted the participants’ slow-wave oscillations to match the stimulations.
31. It can be inferred that the approach used in the study
A. may put old adults in risk in the long run
B. has the potential to be applied in practice
C. requires an innovative and affordable device
D. needs Northwestern’s patent for confirmation
D
Casting blame is natural: it is tempting to fault someone else for a mistake rather than taking responsibility yourself. But blame is also harmful. It makes it less likely that people will own up to mistakes, and thus less likely that organizations can learn from them. Research published in 2015 suggests that firms whose managers pointed to external factors to explain their failings underperformed companies that blamed themselves.
Blame culture can spread like a virus. Just as children fear mom and dad’s punishment if they admit to wrongdoing, in a blaming environment, employees are afraid of criticism and punishment if they acknowledge making a mistake at work. Blame culture asks, “who dropped the ball “ instead of “where did our systems and processes fail “ The focus is on the individuals, not the processes. It’s much easier to point fingers at a person or department instead of doing the harder, but the more beneficial, exercise of fixing the root cause, so the problem does not happen again.
The No Blame Culture was introduced to make sure errors and deficiencies (缺陷) were highlighted by employees as early as possible. It originated in organizations where tiny errors can have catastrophic (灾难 性 的) consequences. These are known as high reliability organizations (HROs) and include hospitals, submarines and airlines. Because errors can be so disastrous in these organizations, it’s dangerous to operate in an environment where employees don’t feel able to report errors that have been made or raise concerns about deficiencies that may turn into future errors. The No Blame Culture maximizes accountability because all contributions to the event occurring are identified and reviewed for possible change and improvement.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) , which supervises air traffic across the United States, makes it clear that its role is not to assign blame or liability but to find out what went wrong and to issue recommendations to avoid a repeat. The proud record of the airline industry in reducing accidents partly reflects no-blame processes for investigating crashes and close calls. The motive to learn from errors also exist when the risks are lower. That is why software engineers and developers routinely investigate what went wrong if a website crashes or a server goes down.
There is an obvious worry about embracing blamelessness. What if the website keeps crashing and the same person is at fault Sometimes, after all, blame is deserved. The idea of the “just culture”, a framework developed in the 1990s by James Reason, a psychologist, addresses the concern that the incompetent and the malevolent (恶意的) will be let off the hook. The line that Britain’s aviation regulator draws between honest errors and the other sort is a good starting-point. It promises a culture in which people “are not punished for actions or decisions taken by them that are commensurate with their experience and training”. That narrows room for blame but does not remove it entirely.
32. According to the research published in 2015, companies that ____________.had better performance.
A. blamed external factors B. owned up to mistakes
C. conducted investigations D. admitted failures
33. According to the passage, the No Blame Culture ____________.
A. encourages the early disclosure of errors
B. only exists in high reliability organizations
C. enables people to shift the blame onto others
D. prevents organizations learning from errors
34. What is the major concern about embracing blamelessness according to the passage
A. Innocent people might take the blame by admitting their failure.
B. Being blamed for mistakes can destroy trust in employees.
C. The line between honest errors and the other sort is not clean.
D. People won’t learn their lessons if they aren’t blamed for failures.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Why We Fail to Learn from Our Own Mistakes
B. How to Avoid Disastrous Errors in Organizations
C. Why We Should Stop the Blame Game at Work
D. How to Deal with Workplace Blame Culture
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项;选项中有两项为多余选项。
In our modern world, there are endless alternatives. Have you ever found yourself wondering whether you should quit or stay in your job, accept an offer or give it up for another There is a simple and practical method that solves this problem. 36 When you understand the concept, you have the power to measure every alternative with precision and make the right decision.
In the field of economics, opportunity cost is the value that you have to give up when you choose an option over another good option. 37 Every time you choose something, you give up other alternatives together with their financial benefits. It is not all the other options, but the most valued one that is defined as the opportunity cost.
38 Take the simple example of trying to decide whether to take public transportation for 80 minutes or to drive for 40 minutes. You might save on the cost of gas while riding the bus but double the trip length and miss out on other things you could have done during that time. 39 This is how you create priorities in your daily life.
Though useful in decision making, the biggest drawback of opportunity cost is that it’s often related to what’s hard to quantify. 40 After all, putting a number to your peaceful mind or happiness can be difficult.
Opportunity cost isn’t cut and dried. It varies from person to person. At the end of the day, you are in charge of what you own and what you want to gain.
A. It is about finding out the opportunity cost.
B. Weigh the losses and gains, and make your decision.
C. Opportunity cost matters not only in economics but also in real life.
D. This is especially true when the opportunity cost is of non-financial benefit.
E. The key principle underlying the idea is that there is no such thing as free lunch.
F. Most people overlook opportunity cost because the benefits are usually hidden from view.
G. It is the development of important skills that would help you move forward in your daily life.

When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs. Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking (当啷声) sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs. Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里) .
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have Mrs. Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs. Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.

第一节:书面表达(满分15分)
Dear fellow students,
With the increasing popularity of plogging, this new type of sport where people pick up the litter along their running routine is more common to see around us. By taking part in this kind of sport, people can not only build themselves up, but also help to create a cleaner and more beautiful community. Besides, this sport is definitely able to raise people’s awareness of environmental protection. Therefore, I’m here to advocate that we students should participate in it actively without hesitation to make us healthier. Meanwhile, we are supposed to spare no effort to make contributions to protecting our environment. Let’s take action.

第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
Several minutes passed, but no help came. Each minute witnessed the dead silence in the lift, broken only by Mrs. Lim’s sniffles. Then I noticed the emergency call button, something that usually appeared as a mere decoration, yet it held my last glimmer of hope at that very moment. After pressing it, I was somewhat relieved when the faint crackle of the connection signaled that help was on the way. I leaned against the dirty wall, putting on a brave face and chatting about our neighbors and our daily routines with Mrs. Lim, hoping to distract her from the unease, as well as mine. But it took so long that I was about to sink into despair again when there finally came some voice. (122 words)
Paragraph 2:
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. They did come to our rescue! It was my turn to burst into tears, tears of relief, for I no longer needed to pretend to be strong. The door opened, the light of dusk wasn’t overpowering, but as we stepped out of the cramped lift, it still momentarily dazzled our eyes. It was a beacon of life, a gentle yet profound reminder of our survival. It was at that moment that I had a thorough understanding of the significance of cherishing the uneventful days, for in their simplicity lies a preciousness we often overlook. I promised myself, I would never again fail to find joy in the ordinary. (126 words)

【原文】 W: I wonder if I’ll need my umbrella today.
M: Yeah, it doesn’t look very nice out there, does it
W: True, but it’s been cloudy like this for days, yet it stayed dry.
M: What does the weather report say
W: Not much. I asked my phone’s virtual assistant, but it just said it may rain today. There’s a 51% chance at ten a. m.
M: Very helpful.
W: I know. It might as well say your guess is as good as mine.
M: Huh You’d better take one anyway. Better to be prepared
W: Good point. And I guess I can take my travel umbrella. It’s small.

【原文】 W: I can’t believe it. I’ve lost my whole story.
M: What happened
W: All of a sudden, my screen went black. When I came back on, there was nothing there. I spent all morning writing that story.
M: Did you save it as you went along
W: I thought I did, but the computer saves things itself, doesn’t it
M: I don’t trust that. Have a look to see if there’s a copy on your backup.
W: The whole morning has been wasted. I’ll just have to do the whole thing again.
M: How annoying. It has happened to me e on, let’s go to lunch. You might feel better after eating something.
W: Okay, I have no better choice
10-12
【原文】 M: I really do need some money. I never seem to have anything these days. W: Have you ever thought about getting a job
M: Not until my graduation, but I’ll have to wait for three months. I need money this week.
W: Maybe some kind of part time job before that you could borrow something, but I wouldn’t advise that.
M: I suppose you’re right. I should look for a part time job.
W: I’ve already begun looking for full time jobs.
M: Maybe I should be doing that as well. Have you been invited for any interviews
W: I haven’t actually applied anywhere yet. I’ve just looked at what kind of job this is being offered.
M: What are you thinking of doing
W: I’d like to be a translator, but maybe be a teacher if I feel that. How about you M: For my career and I want to do engineering.
13-16
【原文】 W: That smells good. What are you making
M: My breakfast for tomorrow
W: But it’s almost dinner time.
M: Well, I’ve got a very early start tomorrow morning.
W: What are you going to do I’ve got a meeting at my company’s head office. If I don’t prepare, I know I’ll end up eating something unhealthy at the train station. I’ve also made a salad to take with me for lunch.
W: Wow, I’ve never known you to be this organized. You’re very serious about losing weight, aren’t you
M: I am and I’m happy to say it’s working.
W: Oh, really
M: Yes, I’ve lost six kilos since I started at the beginning of the year. I weighed 95 kilos when I started in January.
W: That’s amazing. And in only four months have you been exercising too
M: Yes, I used to take the bus to work and now I ride a bike instead.
W: That’s really great. Maybe I should try to learn from you.
M: You don’t need to lose any weight.
W: I may be slim, but I eat way too much junk food and I drive everywhere, even when it would be easy to walk.
M: Well, I can lend you the book that inspired me.
W: That would be great, thanks.

【原文】 Honestly, I can’t believe my dream has come true. As a young man, I have always been imagining moving to Los Angeles one day and putting my whole heart into music. Of course, at the time, this seemed like a very distant hope. Thanks to my fans, supporters and wife. I’m here today. First, I released three twelve song records, which slowly gained attention around my hometown in northern England, and some nearby regions like Scotland and Ireland. And now my latest project, which was just a single song, caught the world’s attention. For that I’d say it only happened because I refused to give up. Through the UPS and downs in my career, I did it all for the love of music. So being recognized for this award means a lot to me. To all the young musicians out there, you can do it too. Plus, to all the fans and anyone enjoying my music, I’ve done this for you. This award is for all of us. May many more great things come in the future. Put your hands together for our host Bob Ackerman with the next award.
