Gorman is the youngest poet in U. S. history. She became the youth poet laureate (获奖者) of Los Angeles at age 16 in 2014 and the first national youth poet laureate three years later. She has recently completed her studies at Harvard University.
Her mother, Joan Wicks, teaches middle school in Watts. Shuttling among the neighborhoods gave Gorman a window to the world. Her like for poetry dates at least back to the third grade when her teacher read Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine to the class.
Gorman is a lot better at it now, but still working on her confidence as a public speaker. “Until two or maybe three years ago, I couldn’t say the letter ‘r’. Even to this day sometimes I struggle with it. I’d want to say ‘girls can change the world’, but I can not say so many letters in that statement, so I’d say things like ‘young women can shape the globe’.”
For Gorman, writing became a cure. “I used writing as a form of self expression to get my word on the page. So the more I recited out loud, the more I was able to teach myself how to pronounce these letters which for so long had been my greatest impediment.” Gorman said she also used a song from Miranda’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical Hamilton to help with her speaking. “But I don’t look at my disability as a weakness,” said Gorman. “It’s made me the performer that I am and the storyteller that I strive to be.”
In September, Gorman will release Change Sings, the first of two children’s books. The poet says she desires to publish a book “in which kids could see themselves as change-makers in history, rather than just observers”.

A new American weather satellite could save more lives by better predicting extreme weather conditions. The satellite was launched in the state of Florida on November 19, 2016. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also known as NOAA, has been working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on the project.
NOAA officials are calling the new satellite GOES-R. That is short for a much longer name the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series.
NOAA said GOES-R could improve the nation’s ability to observe weather conditions and make weather predictions. It said the satellite’s device would lead to more exact and timely weather forecasts, watches and warnings.
The government agency said the satellite will require testing of its six instruments and will be ready to work “within a year.” One of the six instruments on the satellite is designed to help scientists study lightning strikes and map them. This, NOAA says, will help the agency follow the movement of severe storms and provide more detailed warnings.
“The next generation of weather satellites is finally here,” said NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan. She described GOES-R as one of the most effective Earth-observing machines ever created. Sullivan said its instruments will be able to study Earth five times faster and with four times more details than any other NOAA satellite currently in operation. An NOAA statement said the greater detail will help improve the agency’s study of ocean storms, as well as “the prediction and warnings of severe weather.” In addition, GOES-R will be able to provide improved rainfall estimates, which will lead to more timely and detailed flood warnings.
Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA in short, says that the GOES-R satellite will improve the ability of people and organizations across America to prepare for, and react to, weather-related disasters.
28.What can we learn about the new weather satellite
A.It has been put into service for more than 5 months already.
B.It is the most effective Earth-observing machine ever made.
C.It works faster and provides more detailed information than any other American satellite.

30.Why does the reporter quote the words from different people and organizations in the news
A.To show opinions vary from person to person.
B.To show the development of the satellite.
C.To convince the readers of superb functions of the satellite.
D.To prove they are authorities.
31.The passage mainly focuses on ______.
A.a new American satellite that can be used for military purposes

It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait ”
In the summer of 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man, who was often yelling on the street. Inspired by the book’s sympathetic message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
“It was the strangest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later on the podcast Top Artist. “When I met the homeless man- Faris, I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year, and probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.” And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could paint Faris’s portrait. Faris said yes. That led him to form Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused.
The portraits signed by both subject and artist are sold for a few thousand dollars, which is then put into what he calls a “love account” for his model to help people get back on their feet.
Peterson has painted 41 of these portraits himself. But there’s more to the finished products than the money they bring to someone down-and-out. He’s discovered that the buyers tend to connect to the story of the person in the painting, finding similarities and often friendship with someone they might have otherwise overlooked or stereotyped (刻板印象).
“People often tell me, ‘I was the one that would cross the street. But I see homeless people differently now,’” Peterson says. “I didn’t know that would happen.”
32.What inspired Peterson to set up Faces of Santa Ana
A.Peterson’s passion for painting. B.The inspiration from the book Love Does.
C.Peterson’s connection with Faris. D.The unique appearance of the homeless man.
33.What does the underline sentence mean in the last but one paragraph
A.Peterson still has more portraits to finish.
B.The portraits may bring more to the buyers.
C.The portraits should be sold at a higher price.
D.The buyers tend to donate more money than the portraits’ price.
34.Which words can be used to describe Peterson
A.Caring and devoted. B.Cultured and ambitious.
C.Creative and grateful. D.Generous and shortsighted.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.The Art of Friendship B.A Nonprofit Organization
C.The Power of Arts Dream D.Peterson and His Portraits.

My personal relationship with Steve began when I was an 18-year-old college student. As I was a great lover of fruits, I often went to the Davis Farmers Market in California’s Central Valley to buy fresh fruits. At the market I could come face to face with some of the highest quality fruit on the planet and the experts who grew it. Once when I was there, I saw a man shouting, loud and excited, and I realized he was shouting at me, demanding I try his peaches.
That was how I got to know Steve, a fruit farmer who was selling wonderful peaches grown on his own farm. We had a chat about fruits and we felt like friends. Steve invited me to work part-time on his farm and I agreed. I would pick, prune (修剪), and run after birds, and I was paid in cash and fruit. About a year later my roommate observed that I might be addicted to fruit. I’d regularly come home from Steve’s farm with dozens of pounds of peaches, cherries, and apples.
When I was to graduate, Steve offered me a full-time job to drive a truck and sell fruit at Northern California farmers’ markets. But I turned him down. I wanted to be a news reporter.
While working as a reporter, I happened to read in an old book that Fairchild, a late 19th-century food spy, traveled the world to find crops that didn’t exist in the U.S. He was the man who brought America its first avocados, kale, and mangoes, and he helped to get the famous cherry blossom trees in Washington D.C. For three years I combed Fairchild’s diaries and his travel journals. And I sat up all night reading his century-old writings.

67.These writings got me thinking about Steve and the fruit trees on the farm. My mouth still watered at the thought of his fruits. Often, while I was writing a news article, I would stare out of the window and wonder how my life would be different if I were a bit more like Steve. Instead of writing, I would be growing fruits, and making fruits more accessible to more people. I even wondered whether the job he had offered was still open and I found myself phoning him from time to time, though I said nothing about working for him.
Last summer, I went to spend a couple of days on the farm. I discovered how much delight I took in getting some dirt under my fingernails. One day, Steve asked if I could transport about 800 pounds of peaches a few hundred miles to a market with his truck. I gladly agreed. We loaded up the truck and I set off. I was wearing a smile on the way, feeling content that, finally, I was able to return to the job where my passion had always lain.
