W: Welcome to Star Fitness Club. I’m Tina Harrison. Before you start, I’d like to offer you some tips. We all know that regular exercise is important, but few of us know how to exercise properly. I’ve seen many people make the same workout mistakes in this place. One mistake people often make is sticking to the same routine. It is not good for building up your muscles. I’d like to suggest that you change your routine every other month. What’s more, you can try different kinds of workouts, such as jogging, biking, or swimming. This can help keep your whole body in shape. Another mistake most people make is to work out intensely almost every day. You need to give your body a break , and allow time for the muscles to grow. It is not the harder the better. Two hard workout days every week is enough. If you really hate to skip a day, you can plan easy exercises on other days. However, experts’ suggestion is that you take one day off completely each week.

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, “You’re nervous and that’s okay. Everyone is afraid of high school.” I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.
On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn’t figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be I didn’t think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it!
Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging. Since then, I’ve been elected (选举) the vice monitor of my class, which wasn’t much of a victory since only three people ran for the four positions.
It is normal to be scared of a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is not so frightening. Make sure you participate in some out of class activities because you’ll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn’t straight A’s.
Most important of all, be who you are, whether you’re a“fool”, an athlete, or a lower grader. Don’t try to pretend to be someone you’re not. Now you know the secret of my success.
24.What is the main reason for the author’s fear on his first day in high school
A.He was unable to work out the puzzle.
B.His schoolmates were unfriendly to him.
C.He was not familiar with the new surroundings.
D.His schoolbag was too heavy for him to carry.
25.What can we infer from the author’s first day’s experience
A.He didn’t know the right way to class.
B.He got to school before classes began.
C.He was fond of the school immediately.
D.His home was very far from the school.
26.What can be learnt about the author after his first week at school
A.He was still not accustomed to the schedule.
B.He was gradually used to the new school.
C.He found high school not so challenging as he had imagined.
D.He ran for monitor of his class against three other students.
27.What is the secret of the author’s success according to the passage
A.Making more friends.
B.Being who he really is.
C.Getting straight A’s at school.
D.Joining in out of class activities.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.B 27.B
根据文章第一段“On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult.(在我新高中的第一天,我差点精神崩溃。学校的一切似乎都很难。)”和第二段“On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn’t figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be I didn’t think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it!(第一天,我每节课都迟到,经常迷路。学校就像一个我无法解开的谜题。这一整年都是这样吗 我不认为我能接受这个挑战,尤其是背着一个我几乎举不起来的大背包。它太大了,我可以用它把人打晕!)”可推知,作者高中第一天感到害怕的主要原因是他不熟悉新环境。故选C。
25.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn’t figure out.(第一天,我每节课都迟到,经常迷路。学校就像一个我无法解开的谜题。)”可知,作者上高中第一天每节课都迟到并且总是迷路,由此可推断出作者不知道去上课的正确的路。故选A。
根据文章第三段“Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.(尽管我很害怕,但在第一周之后,我终于把我的日程安排好了。除了几次从楼梯上摔下来被人嘲笑之外,高中生活还算不错。它实际上比中学好得多,也更具挑战性。)”可知,作者逐渐适应了新学校。故选B。
27.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Most important of all, be who you are, whether you’re a “fool”, an athlete, or a lower grader. Don’t try to pretend to be someone you’re not. C
“What are your plans for next fall ”
It’s a question that high school seniors start to hear quite often at the beginning of the school year.
At Sheboygan South High School, the 300 or so seniors scheduled to graduate each year used to get the question far later — in an interview survey as they were leaving high school. About 80 percent of respondents (调查对象) would check the box “four-year college.” The responses, it turns out, were quite misleading.
In reality, only about 45 percent of the school’s graduating seniors went to four-year colleges in the fall. Between 5 percent and 10 percent went to two-year technical colleges, 1 to 2 percent enlisted in the military (军队), and the remaining graduates entered the workforce.
“A good number of students were undecided,” said Steve Schneider, a school counselor at the school. “I think they figured: If I put that on the survey, it gets everyone off my back.”
Luckily, that was over ten years ago. Now, Sheboygan South students get those questions much earlier. Starting from freshman year of high school, all Sheboygan South students are assigned (分配) to an advisory group (by grade level) with about 20 students to each adviser-teacher, who remains with them for all four years. The program centers on a planning process for life after high school. Students learn about their own skills and preferences, all the possibilities open to them, and how best to prepare for those opportunities.
“Crazy beneficial” is how Brenda Binversie, a parent of four children, describes this planning process. The program wasn’t in place for her oldest daughter, but she said it provided timely help for her second daughter, “She likes to act without planning,” Binversic said. “The process really helped her see what she needed to do to get where she wanted.” That daughter is now a senior in college studying food science.
28.Why did the author raise the question in paragraph 1
A.To make readers think about it.
B.To bring up the topic of this text.
C.To discuss it in the following paragraphs.
D.To express his doubts about future planning.
29.What can we say about the interview survey results
A.They agreed with reality.
B.They didn’t show students’ real thoughts.
C.They were beyond many people’s expectations.
D.They showed that students were poor at future planning.
30.What is paragraph 6 mainly about
A.How Sheboygan South’s new program works.
B.Why Sheboygan South started the new program.
C.The benefits of Sheboygan South’s new program.
D.People’s responses to Sheboygan South’s new program.
31.What does Brenda Binversie think of Sheboygan South’s new program
A.It is more beneficial for younger kids than older ones.
B.It has helped more students get into college.
C.It was helpful for her second daughter.
D.It should start as early as middle school.
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.C
根据第一段“What are your plans for next fall (你明年秋天的计划是什么?)”及第三段“At Sheboygan South High School, the 300 or so seniors scheduled to graduate each year used to get the question far later—in an interview survey as they were leaving high school. About 80 percent of respondents (调查对象) would check the box “four-year college.” The responses, it turns out, were quite misleading. (在Sheboygan South高中,每年计划毕业的300多名高年级学生通常会在很晚的时候得到这个问题——在他们高中毕业时进行的一次采访调查中。大约80%的受访者会选择“四年制大学”。事实证明,这些回应相当具有误导性)”可知,第一段提出问题是为了引出本文的主题——未来规划。故选B。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段“The responses, it turns out, were quite misleading. (事实证明,这些回应相当具有误导性)”和第五段““A good number of students were undecided,” said Steve Schneider, a school counselor at the school. (“很多学生还没有决定,”该校的辅导员Steve Schneider说)”可知,采访的结果表明学生对未来的规划很差。故选D。
30.主旨大意题。根据第六段“Now, Sheboygan South students get those questions much earlier. Starting from freshman year of high school, all Sheboygan South students are assigned (分配) to an advisory group (by grade level) with about 20 students to each adviser-teacher, who remains with them for all four years. The program centers on a planning process for life after high school. (现在,Sheboygan South的学生更早得到这些问题。从高中一年级开始,Sheboygan South的所有学生都被分配到一个咨询组(按年级分组),每组大约20名学生,每名顾问老师将陪伴他们四年。该项目以高中毕业后的生活规划为中心)”可知,本段介绍了Sheboygan South的新项目是如何运作的。故选A。
根据最后一段““Crazy beneficial” is how Brenda Binversie, a parent of four children, describes this planning process. The program wasn’t in place for her oldest daughter, but she said it provided timely help for her second daughter (作为四个孩子的父母,Brenda Binversie是这样描述这个规划过程的:“非常有益”。她的大女儿没有参加这个项目,但她说,这个项目为她的二女儿提供了及时的帮助)”可知,Brenda Binversie认为,Sheboygan South的新项目对二女儿产生了帮助。故选C。

A group of Chinese language students from Spain visited Malta for three days. They had a chance to enjoy themselves in the amazing Chinese cultural experiences there.
At the Confucius Institute of the University of Malta on Saturday, the students from the Official School of Languages were attracted by traditional Chinese flute (长笛) performances, and Chinese tea making. Each of them was photographed trying on Hanfu, a form of traditional Chinese clothing. Despite their age differences, they all proved their dexterity (灵巧) at traditional Chinese works such as paper-cutting and knot-weaving. Maria Nieves, a group member, expressed her strong interest in Chinese culture, after two years of learning the language. “Despite the challenges, Chinese characters are truly beautiful,” she says.
On Sunday, the group visited the Mediterranean Regional Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Paola, Malta. Under the guidance of a doctor, they practiced Ba Duan Jin, a set of exercises whose name translates as “eight steps to healthy living”. A lecture on TCM introduced them to treatments like acupuncture (针灸) and cupping, and some of the students had the chance to personally experience a treatment. Feng Hua, leader of the Chinese medical team, says that the TCM center is planning to host more students, who are interested in TCM and Chinese culture to take part in cultural exchange, and learn more about Chinese medical practice.
During their visit to the China Cultural Center in Valletta on Monday, the students were drawn to the traditional Chinese lanterns hanging in front of the entrance, and also to the beautiful tea sets in the main hall. Yuan Yuan, director of the China Cultural Center in Malta, highlights the importance of cultural exchange in promoting friendship between nations.

As a high school student, you’re likely used to learning through reading textbooks. 36 This lies at the heart of “experiential appreciation,” a philosophy that encourages you to engage directly with the world around you. It’s about learning from real-life experiences, and discovering a more profound and engaging way to learn.
To practice experiential appreciation, you can start by getting involved in hands-on activities related to your subjects. They will provide a firsthand understanding of the concepts you’re studying, making learning active and meaningful. What a great year we had had! A new baby daughter, a job promotion (晋升) for my husband, and a new home were among what we had received. My husband and I were grateful for them. We wanted no gifts for Christmas, because our cups were running over. So my husband and I decided to teach them to learn to share.
After dinner, we talked about doing something special for someone else at Christmas. Our oldest son said, “Why don’t we find a family who needs help and give them presents ”
All of us were excited about the idea. We didn’t know exactly how we find our “Christmas family”, but we did know we wanted to help. The next morning I made calls to friends who might know of someone in need. That evening at dinner I described the family I had found. The father was a repairman but lost his job two weeks before. He hadn’t landed a new job yet. There were three children in the family. The wife gave birth to a new baby, who was the same age as ours. But unluckily, the baby had been taking many tests as doctors tried to determine why she wasn’t developing properly. They had spent almost all their savings on the treatment, with little for daily necessities. They were in great trouble. Of course, they had little hope of having gifts for Christmas.
“Can we give them some of our clothes ” asked our daughter. We all agreed that her idea was good, and so the children ran to their bedrooms and began sorting out the clothes they had outgrown. But my husband and I knew that clothes were not enough.

As we strolled through the aisles, we carefully selected items for our special Christmas family. Toys for the children, warm blankets for the cold winter nights, and essential groceries to ensure they had enough to eat. The joy of giving filled our hearts as we imagined the smiles on their faces.
Then we were off to deliver Christmas gifts to our special family. We arrived at their doorstep, greeted by the glow of Christmas lights and the scent of freshly baked cookies. As we exchanged heartfelt hugs and warm wishes, tears welled up in their eyes. The simple act of kindness seemed to lift their spirits, reminding us of the true meaning of the season. Together, we laughed, shared stories, and savored the warmth of companionship. In that moment, we realized that the greatest gift of all is the love we share with others.

A.To make readers think about it.
B.To bring up the topic of this text.

A.They agreed with reality.
B.They didn’t show students’ real thoughts.
C.They were beyond many people’s expectations.

A.How Sheboygan South’s new program works.

C.The benefits of Sheboygan South’s new program.
D.People’s responses to Sheboygan South’s new program.

Experiential appreciation transforms learning from a task to be completed into a journey to be treasured. 40 So, explore the world around you, let every experience shape you, and discover the endless possibilities that await.
