This over 50-year-old good time held on the shores of Lake Geneva is the second-largest jazz festival in the world. It’s more than jazz, though. Each of the 17 horses in the race and each of their course riders, represent one of the city’s districts, adding to the roar (咆哮) of the crowd. And to make things even more entertaining, riders are allowed to do anything to their opponents other than pull their reins (缰绳), so expect as many falls as thrills.
Saint Patrick’s Festival, Ireland
Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated anywhere in the world where there is an Irish group, but there’s no better place than Dublin, Ireland. This four-day festival in March is packed with a program of music, performing arts, literature, tours and food events. Centered around the national holiday, this festival of Irish pride, achievements and talents will be well supplied with Irish cheer.
Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival, China
Harbin is transformed into a winter wonderland with huge ice sculptures across the city, decorated with lights and lasers, drawing thousands of artists and art enthusiasts alike. World famous physicist Stephen Hawking died peacefully at his home in Cambridge on March 14th, 2018.
Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8th, 1942. He went to school in a small city near London. As he himself admitted, he wasn’t very serious about studying. He sat on a wheelchair with a computer by his side. To communicate with others, he moved two fingers to control the computer’s mouse. He chose his words from the screen, which were then spoken by a voice synthesizer (音响合成器). “I’ve had the disease for most of my life,” Hawking once said, “Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work.”
Although Hawking was a disabled man, he made great achievements. He received many awards and prizes for his work, including the Albert Einstein Award—the highest achievement in physics.

In January, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, appeared at a hearing to answer questions about how social media potentially harms children. Zuckerberg opened by saying: “The existing body of scientific work has not shown a causal link (关联) between using social media and young people having worse mental health.”
But many social scientists would disagree with that statement. In recent years, studies have started to show a causal link between teen social media use and reduced well-being. One of the most cited studies into this link focused on Facebook.
Researchers tried to discover whether the platform’s introduction across college campuses in the mid-2000s increased symptoms (症状) related to mental health problems. The answer was a clear yes, says Alexey Makarin, a coauthor of the study. “There is still a lot to be explored,” Makarin says, “but to say there is no causal evidence that social media causes mental health issues, and I definitely object to that.”
The concern and the studies come from data showing that social media use in teens aged 13 to 17 is now very common. Two-thirds of teens report using TikTok, and some 60 percent of teens report using Instagram or Snapchat, a 2022 survey found. Another survey showed that girls, on average, spend around 3. 4 hours per day on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, compared with about 2.1 hours among boys. At the same time, more teens are showing signs of depression than ever, especially girls.
As more studies show a strong link between these phenomena, researchers are starting to move their attention to possible solutions. Why does social media use seem to bring about mental health problems Why do those effects unevenly exist among different groups, such as girls or young adults And can the good points of social media be teased out (梳理) from the bad points to provide more targeted guidance to teens, their caregivers and policymakers
28.Why does the author mention Zuckerberg’s words
A.To introduce the topic. B.To offer a piece of advice.
C.To present the image of a company. D.To add background information.
29.What does Makarin’s study find
A.It is important to network with others. B.Social media harms teens’ mental health.
C.The Internet plays a key role in our daily life. D.Messaging tools cause parents mental suffering.
30.Which is the percentage of teenagers using TikTok according to the 2022 survey
A.34%. B.60%. C.67%. D.76%.
31.What will researchers probably do
A.Focus on all the Internet users. B.Turn to teenagers’ caregivers.
C.Limit adults’ social media use. D.Work out targeted solutions.
【答案】28.A 29.B 30.C 31.D

They thought it was going to be easy. A piece of cake. The band, Suenalo, were excited that they would present their skills to a group of troubled youth at a detention center (少管所).
They arrived at the invitation of a friend, who was an adviser at the center. He had mentioned a career day where members of the community came to speak to the teens about their jobs. Usually the speakers were bankers or lawyers, so he thought it would be interesting for the kids to meet some musicians and maybe even hear some music. “They need something cool to get their attention” was the pitch from the friend.
The kids, about 40, were brought in, looking distant, some even angry. Chad Bernstein, the trombone player, started telling the career of a musician from touring to copyright to the business aspects, trying to draw their interest. However, it didn’t. Sensing that they couldn’t win, the band, a little thrown, decided to play one song. With music going, the kids seemed to respond, their heads nodding to the beat. One of them sang a lyric (歌词). The band sang it back. Then, one by one, the musicians began picking up the beat. Chad started free styling a rap, going back and forth with the kid, and in no time, other kids jumped in. Suddenly the band and the kids were creating a song from scratch and all of them were in musical heaven.
For Chad, that moment inspired him to found Guitars Over Guns, an organization that pairs at-risk middle-schoolers with professional musicians. As both music teachers and life coaches, the musicians give the kids a way to find their creative voices and get through dark times. Over time, the kids have dropped their tough fronts and shared personal stories, from family tragedies to ordinary struggles at school with friends.
“So far we’ve helped over 2,700 students. Our work is highly satisfying because it shows us that a music career is more than a job, it can have more impact,” says Chad Bernstein.
32.Why did the band come to the detention center
A.To get attention. B.To display skills. C.To plan their careers. D.To chat about music.
33.What can we learn about the song created on the spot
A.Its lyrics were from the kids. B.Chad owned its copyright.
C.It was composed cooperatively. D.The kids picked up its beat.
34.What does Guitars Over Guns do to help at-risk teens
A.Offer guidance on life. B.Give full school instruction.
C.Relate personal stories. D.Promote awareness of risks.

【答案】Hello, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Li Hua and I’m honored to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping.
With the development of the Internet, shopping online has become increasingly common in our life. Shopping online has a lot of advantages, of which the most important is perhaps its convenience. People don’t have to waste a lot of their energy and precious time to go from one shop to another to choose the goods they like. This is especially desirable to the old, the sick and the busy people who cannot go to the shops in person. However, shopping on the Internet also has its disadvantages. Online shopping requires sharing personal and financial information, which can be a concern for privacy and security. Once cheated, you will find that you have nowhere to go to complain.
Therefore, while enjoying the great benefits online shopping offers, we should also be aware of the potential risks and take steps to protect ourselves.
Thank you for listening.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Since my childhood my grandmother had noticed how shy I was about letting people do things for me. She was always pointing out to me, “Linda, it’s a blessing to do a good deed for someone else, but sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.” I never really understood what she meant until recently.
It was three months ago, and I’d just moved into an apartment for college in Brooklyn, New York. Several of my friends had offered to help me settle in after the moving men left, but I’d said I could manage. Letting them help did not ft my image of myself as a capable and independent woman of 21.
As December arrived, getting to school became more difficult. One day, snowflakes had been falling past my window for several hours when it came time to leave for class. I put on two sweaters, a coat, a wool hat and boots, making for the bus stop near apartment. In this December storm it was a hard journey. As I tied around my neck the blue scarf that Grandma had knitted (编织) for me, I could almost hear her voice: “Why don’t you see if you can find a lift ” A thousand reasons came into my mind: I don’t know my neighbors; I feel funny asking for favors. Pride would not let me ask even though I came across three neighbors at the door of the apartment building. One of them was the woman living upstairs, and in her hand there was an obvious car key.
Result An hour of waiting in the bitter cold before the bus finally arrived, followed by another half-hour journey. When I slid into the classroom, the class was almost over. If only I had taken the chance and asked for help! It would have been a 10-minute ride by car. Grandma would be shaking her head at my stubbornness (固执).
注意:.续写部分为两段,开头语已为你写好。
On the day of my final exam, I again walked to the bus stop through heavy snow.

【答案】
On the day of my final exam, I again walked to the bus stop through heavy snow. As I trudged along, I couldn’t help but think of Grandma’s words echoing in my mind. This time, her wisdom seemed to seep into my frozen bones. Just then, a car slowed beside me, and to my surprise, it was my neighbor from the third floor, the one with the kind eyes and the ever-ready smile. Without hesitation, I accepted her offer, warmth spreading through me as I stepped into her car.
As I pushed open the door of my apartment building later that day, I found myself face to face with the woman from upstairs. With a grateful heart, I thanked her earnestly, with a sincerity in my voice that had been missing before. “I’ve been meaning to ask, would you like to come over for some tea sometime I’d love to get to know you better.” I said earnestly. Her face lit up with a warm smile, and I knew in that moment, I had not only accepted help but also opened the door to a new friendship, one that Grandma would surely approve of.

It seems every country has one major event on the annual calendar. Here we’ve boiled down the choices to the absolute top events to add to your bucket list
.Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland
This over 50-year-old good time held on the shores of Lake Geneva is the second-largest jazz festival in the world. It’s more than jazz, though. Twice a year, the Tuscan town of Siena recalls its past in the Middle Ages with a bareback horse race.
He did very little work, he was never top of his class. However, he still achieved good marks. After leaving school, Hawking first went to Oxford University to study physics. Then he went to Cambridge University to study cosmology (宇宙学).
At the age of 21, Hawking noticed something wrong with him. He had a bad illness that stopped him from moving and talking. He couldn’t communicate except by blinking (眨眼).
Hawking worked at Cambridge University as a professor. His story shows that nobody, however bad their situation is, should lose hope. “Life is not fair,” he once said, “You just have to do the best you can in your own situation.”

35.What kind of person is Chad Bernstein
A.Disciplined. B.Purposeful. C.Humorous. D.Traditional.
