【原文】
M: Peter and his wife had planned to spend this weekend in an expensive hotel, but the weekend didn’t work out exactly as they had planned. Peter worked until late on Friday evening. His office is on the twelfth floor. When Peter finished at eight o’clock, he locked his office and got into the lift, but he didn’t get out again until Monday morning. He pressed the button for the ground floor and the lift started going down but then stopped. He pressed the button again but nothing happened. He pressed the alarm and shouted, but nobody heard him. Most people had already gone home. Peter tried to phone his wife, but his mobile didn’t work in the lift. He couldn’t do anything. He just sat on the floor and hoped maybe somebody would realize what had happened, but on.
Saturday and Sunday, Peter knew nobody would be there. He slept most of the time to forget how hungry he was. So he was in the lift the whole weekend from Friday evening until Monday morning. At eight o’clock when the office workers arrived, they phoned the emergency number and somebody came and repaired the lift. Peter was very happy to get out. He hadn’t eaten since Friday afternoon and was very hungry. The first thing Peter did was to phone his wife to say that he was okay. Peter will soon be the fittest man in his office. From now on, he’s going to take the stairs every day.

“I can’t live without my mobile phone!” is what I often hear people say as they talk about how mobiles have become an essential part of their lives.
The all so common sight of heads bent, eyes staring at mobile screens and fingers busy tapping away repeats itself across major cities around the world. Whenever there is a moment to spare while on the train, taxi or waiting in a queue, people busy themselves with their mobile phones.
Some people believe our unhealthy obsession with mobile phones is destroying how we appreciate the little things in life or miss the moments that matter. The truth is that technology overall should be seen as a tool to improve our lives.
Mobile phones have certainly had a great influence on our lives, but I truly believe it’s for the better.
It’s changed the way we communicate, whether for work or play. We are now less constrained (限制) by time and geographical location. With my mobile phone, I can dial into conference calls while stuck in a traffic jam, or reply to urgent e-mails while on the go. I can send a text message or share photos and videos with friends who aren’t living in the same country. My phone calendar keeps my life organized, and even Facebook. Twitter, and instant messaging are now accessible from mobile phones!
The mobile revolution isn’t just changing the lives of urbanite like myself. I know of a young Bangladeshi woman named Shompa Akhter who is crazy about fashion and design. She dreamt about starting her own business and she did just that, opening a shop in Kushtia featuring her own creations. Dealing with suppliers in different towns was a problem for Shompa-purchase orders had to either be hand delivered or mailed out to suppliers. Shompa also found it tough publicizing (宣传) her business to potential customers outside her town. But once she learnt to operate the mobile phone, she was addicted. The 25-year-old businesswoman now stays in touch easily with her suppliers. Mobile e-mail is a blessing in her life. Who would have thought that mobility could bring about such enormous change It shouldn’t really be a surprise though.
28.In the first two paragraphs, the author wants to show ________.
A.mobile phones make people communicate less
B.mobile phones make people’s life more enjoyable
C.people become addicted to mobile phones in daily life
D.people’s health is greatly affected by mobile phones
29.What’s the author’s attitude towards mobile phones
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Uninterested.
30.Paragraph 5 is mainly about ________.
A.new functions of mobile phones B.new changes in Information Age
C.the author’s personal experiences D.the advantages of mobile phones
31.What do we know about Shompa from the passage
A.She operates a food store. B.She is addicted to Internet surfing.
C.Her mobile phone helped her business a lot. D.Mobile e-mail is still unavailable to her.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, have developed an AI algorithm (算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings (隆隆声) in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network and Seismology Research (TexNet) .“It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70%accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what move science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
32.How does the AI forecast earthquakes
A.By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
B.By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
C.By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
D.By identifying data from the satellites.
33.What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3
A.The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
B.The significance of developing the AI prediction.
C.The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
D.The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
34.What does the follow-up research focus on
A.Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
B.Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C.Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
D.Conducting tests in different locations.
35.Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A.Pioneering and promising. B.Potential and economical.
C.Stable but outdated. D.Effective but costly.

Eric raised his daughter Riley alone. One day, Eric noticed a young teenage boy standing in front of a drugstore. He approached him, and found out that the boy, Jack, wanted to buy medicine for his sick mother, but had no money. Jack cried out, “If I don’t bring home medicine, my mom will die. But I won’t be able to handle it.”
Upon hearing this, Eric didn’t hesitate to pay for the medicine. “I’ll pay for the medicine on his behalf,” he said, handing the pharmacist (药剂师) a couple of bills from his pocket. The boy looked at Eric with grateful eyes, and cried, “Thank you so much. You are heaven-sent.”
“There will always be people willing to help you, son,” Eric told him before handing him two portions of food. “Here, take this to your mom and have a hot meal with her,” he said before letting the boy go.
His daughter Riley saw the whole scene and said, “Dad, we have barely enough money. Why did you pay for the medicine ” Riley, the good you put out into the world will eventually find its way back to you. Just keep doing good,” Eric told his daughter.
When Riley turned thirty, she needed an operation urgently after being told there was something wrong with her heart. With difficulty breathing, Eric rushed Riley to the hospital in an ambulance. “You’ll be alright, Riley.” he cried. “Don’t worry, Daddy is here. We’ll get through this together,” he promised her.
Eric did try his best to find the money for his daughter’s operation. He asked all of his friends, but it was still not enough. Therefore, Eric decided to sell their house. It was enough to pay for her operation, but they would be left with nothing, “It’s okay,” he told himself. I will be able to earn money again, but if I lose my daughter, nothing will ever bring her back.”
By the time Eric made it back to the hospital, Riley was in her hospital room, weak and pale. He sat beside her bed and held her hand. “You’ll be okay, my sweet daughter. We’ll soon have the money for the operation,” he promised her.

【答案】 Eric suddenly noticed an envelope on the bed. It was addressed to him. He opened it with curiosity and was surprised to find a check inside and a note that read: “You’d saved a boy’s mother years before. Thank you so much for the three packs of medicine, and two portions of food.” Immediately, the memory that he once extended a helping hand to the desperate boy in a long time ago occurred to him. He was touched and hurriedly rushed to the nurse station to confirm his assumption.
In the nurse’s station, he was told doctor Jack had entered the hospital room just now. Without hesitation, he ran to the doctor’s office and gathered Jack in his arms. “Thank you, son,” Eric cried. “It’s I who should say thanks. That day, you saved my mother’s life.” The doctor uttered in a thrilled tone. “Since then, I promised myself that I would study hard to become a doctor to help more people. Now I have achieved the dream.” “I am proud of you,” Eric said with happiness. The doctor smiled and promised to arrange the operation for Riley soon and take care of her during her hospitalization. Riley realized that what her dad said was true —— the good you put out into the world will find its way back to you.

Dede Gardner was born in Chicago in 1967 and studied English at Columbia University. Seventeen years after her graduation, she worked as President of Plan B Entertainment, a production company started by Brad Grey.
At Plan B, Dede finds stories to make into films. Jeremy Kleiner, who is now co-president of Plan B, says Dede was his mentor (导师) before he joined her as a producing partner. “I’ve had the honor to work with her for almost 20 years,” he says. “She’s just a one-of-a-kind person in so many ways. She is very brave and views storytelling as the focus of her films.”
This year, Dede is the only woman to have won two Best Picture Oscars, for Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave. Before, together with Kleiner, she won seven films to Best Picture nominations (提名) including Selma in 2015, The Big Short in 2016 and Minari in 2021.
“Basically, whatever Dede does, it turns to gold,” says Jessie Buckley, one of the stars of Women Talking. “Dede has also changed the culture of making movies. She is always there to make the set feel comfortable when we are obviously coming across difficult things. She’s a great example to follow. She’s very careful with protecting the workers’ voice.”
Dede is actually exploring a much healthier and kinder way to make movies. She’s a producer who consciously thinks about creating a set where there is care. That includes making sure there are therapists (治疗专家) on set for all the workers in case there are emergencies happening.

D
