A
Strange events in the sky, such as speeding lights or flying objects, which cannot be explained are called UFOs. Some people believe they could be a sign of aliens.
Many people think there are intelligent life forms in the universe (宇宙) other than humans. However, millions of pounds have been spent searching for aliens and no one has found proof (证据). Some people think it is a waste of money and people’s skills. So, is searching for aliens worth the money and effort Here are two different voices.
It’s a mystery that needs to be solved. “Are humans alone in the universe ” is a question that has inspired centuries of debate (辩论), dating back thousands of years and at least as far as the ancient Greeks. It is a question that has inspired hundreds of books and films, which shows how important it is to people. If someone sees a UFO, we need to find out what it is. Scientists searching for aliens could create new technologies and these could do good to Earth. For example, the small, lightweight camera on phones was developed so astronauts could take photos in space. Plus, if we were to discover aliens, we might be able to share knowledge with each other and create friendships across the universe.
________ There are many important problems here on Earth—such as climate (气候) change. People should focus energy on these rather than searching the universe for aliens that might not even exist (存在). Many people have spent lots of money trying to find signs of alien life and there is no result. Videos of flashing lights and strange objects in the sky might make good stories but in fact there is probably a reasonable explanation, such as a dirty mark on the camera lens (镜头). Besides, if aliens do exist, they will probably find us first so we might as well stop wasting our energy on them and spend it making Earth a better place to live.
1.Paragraph 2 mainly focuses on ________.
A.what aliens are like B.what people’s different opinions are
C.how people found proof D.how much money has been wasted
2.According to paragraph 3, searching for aliens could ________.
A.make people more friendly B.have started from ancient Greeks
C.inspire humans’ creativity D.develop the entertainment business
3.Which of the following can be put in ________
A.Humans have tried for years to find UFOs B.People should put more effort into space
C.The money could be put to better use D.More discoveries do good to Earth
4.The underlined word “these” refers to ________.
A.signs of alien life B.stories on science
C.videos of flashing lights D.problems on Earth
5.A debate is given to make readers ________.
A.discuss a subject B.show off abilities
C.compete for a prize D.learn from mistakes
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.C 4.D 5.A
根据“Many people think there are intelligent life forms in the universe (宇宙) other than humans. However, millions of pounds have been spent searching for aliens and no one has found proof (证据). Some people think it is a waste of money and people’s skills”可知,许多人认为除了人类之外,宇宙中还有智慧生命。
根据“Scientists searching for aliens could create new technologies and these could do good to Earth”可知,寻找外星人的科学家可以创造新技术,这些技术对地球有好处。
根据“Here are two different voices”、“It’s a mystery that needs to be solved”和“There are many important problems here on Earth—such as climate (气候) change”可知,此处针对“花很多钱和精力去寻找外星人是否值得”这一问题,有两种观点,一种是支持的,认为这是一个需要解开的谜。
根据“There are many important problems here on Earth—such as climate (气候) change. People should focus energy on these rather than searching the universe for aliens that might not even exist (存在)”可知,地球上有许多重要的问题,比如气候变化。人们应该把精力集中在这些方面,而不是在宇宙中寻找可能根本不存在的外星人,故划线单词指代的是地球上的许多重要问题。故选D。
5.推理判断题。通读全文和“‘Are humans alone in the universe ’ is a question that has inspired
centuries of debate (辩论)...It is a question that has inspired hundreds of books and films...” 故选A。

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23 th, astronomers have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.
In order to do this, scientists used a method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to decide what places could see us.
The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.
“When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe someone is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced (高级的) life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator (标志). In fact, human-made radio waves have already travelled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.
Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization (文明) would probably not exist any more.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos. ”
“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.
6.How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years
A.319. B.1,715. C.1,396. D.2,034.
7.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 6 refer to
A.A planet circling around one of those 1. 715 stars. B.Advanced life.
C.Oxygen on Earth. D.Human-made radio waves.
8.What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss
A.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far. B.Aliens don’t exist.
C.They can’t understand each other. D.It takes a long time for messages to travel.
9.What is the purpose of the text
A.To show new findings published in a study.
B.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.
C.To raise readers’ interest in aliens.
D.To explain how messages travel between different star systems.
【答案】6.D 7.C 8.D 9.A
根据“Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.”
根据“they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth.”
根据“It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems.”
根据“According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers (天文学家) have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans were here.”

NASA has been building a new telescope, called James Webb Space Telescope. Scientists think it could help them search for signs of alien life! They can watch exoplanets(外行星)with the help of the new telescope.
So far, all the exoplanets we have found are too distant to send astronauts or spaceships to them. Researchers hope the new telescope will help them find out whether there are aliens on these exoplanets!
The new telescope should be able to find out if the exoplanets have oxygen on them. Oxygen is a gas. On the earth, all animals need to breathe oxygen to live. It’s produced by plants and some bacteria(细菌). This means if there is oxygen on a planet, there might be living things as well.
These aliens probably won’t be green people. Instead, they might be tiny bacteria. Scientists say that finding oxygen doesn’t mean there must be alien life. “We don’t know if life is the only cause of oxygen in an atmosphere(大气层), ” NASA scientist Edward Schwieterman said.
The telescope can do more than search for aliens. It can study light from billions of light years away. This will help scientists learn more about what happened at the start of the universe.
10.________ could help scientists search for signs of alien life.
A.Exoplanets
B.Astronauts
C.Spaceships
D.James Webb Space Telescope

B.scientists think all animals need to breathe oxygen to live
C.scientists don’t know if life is the only cause of oxygen in an atmosphere
D.scientists don’t think aliens are green people
14.According to the passage, which is NOT RIGHT ________
A.Scientists think the new telescope can help them search for exoplanets.
B.The new telescope should be able to find out if there is oxygen on exoplanets.
C.The aliens might be tiny bacteria.
D.The telescope can study light from billions of light years away.

Our Milky Way Galaxy may be home to 2 billion planets that have the right conditions to support life. These planets have the correct temperature for liquid water. While no one knows what alien life would look like, if it is anything like life on earth, it would need water to keep alive. According to the research, there are nearly 2 billion habitable planets in the Milky Way Galaxy, which is just one of 100 to 200 billion galaxies in the universe.
The earth was formed 9 billion years after the Big Bang. Many of the planets in the Milky Way were formed millions and some even billions of years before the earth. If intelligent life had existed on any of these planets, they would be much more developed than humans. With that much time to develop the technology for space travel, we should have been visited by aliens many times.
So where is everyone Some people believe that aliens have visited earth many times, and some governments of the world might have known very well. some believe that we have also been visited many times in the ancient past. They point to the Egyptian pyramids or the huge heads of Easter Island. They say that there was no way that ancient humans were able to create these structures without alien assistance.
According to Harvard professor Avi Loeb, . For example, in 2017, a cigar-shaped object came within 33 million km of the earth as it passed through our solar system. It was named Oumuamua, which means “messenger from the distant past reaching out to us” in Hawaiian. Loeb says that its unusual shape and the fact that it sped up as it left our solar system sets it apart from anything else we’ve seen. He thinks it was a probe sent by an alien civilization. Jackie Fairey, says everyone should have reservation about this. She is one of many scientists who say there are more reasonable explanations for Oumuamua. That hasn’t stopped Professor Loeb. He has written a new book on Oumuamua called Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth.
15.According to the passage, if there were aliens, they ________.
A.could be similar to humans on the earth
B.must help build the Great Wall
C.would be smarter than humans on the earth
D.have a shorter history than humans
16.Which of the following can be put into the blank ________ in the passage
A.we hasn’t been visited by aliens for we got nothing from the universe
B.we not only have been visited by aliens, but also have evidence
C.no one could be sure about whether the evidence we’ve got is true
D.all of researchers doubt about the fact that we have been visited
17.From the passage, we can infer that ________.
A.there are fewer than 100 billion habitable planets in the universe
B.some aliens did actually, and on the earth in ancient times
C.some governments received information from the oumuamua
D.scientists Leob doesn’t agree with the idea that Fairey holds
18.What’s the best title of the passage
A.Where are all the aliens
B.When will the aliens visit us
C.Oumuamua: Have you ever been here
D.How many habitable planets are there
【答案】15.C 16.B 17.D 18.B

The idea of life in outer space has been talked about for a long time. Some scientists say that life development on Earth was far too unlikely for it to have happened anywhere else. Things had to be perfect for us to make it on this planet.
Other scientists say that space is too big. Stars and other planets are far too numerous for there to be no other life in the universe.
For many years, there have been reports of visitors from other planets. People all around the world have claimed to see alien spaceships or even aliens themselves.
There have been glimpses of these so-called UFOs (unidentified flying objects) flying through the air and they have even ben captured on video. Some Americans believe that the U.S. Army found an alien spaceship crashed in the desert and then lied to the press about it. Although these sightings may be true, scientists have not found significant evidence that aliens exist.
If you go out into the countryside on a clear night and look up, you can see thousands of stars. Those stars make up a tiny part of our universe. There are more stars, planets, and galaxies than we can count. Even the smartest scientists can’t even come close to defining how big space is. The number of possible stars and planets out there is bigger than our ability to count. If we are really on the only planet that can sustain life, then we are very special in a universe full of amazing things.
34.What have some people claimed about aliens
A.Aliens often appear in dreams. B.They have encountered aliens.
C.Aliens are extremely dangerous. D.Aliens are always kidnapping people.
35.Why does the author mention “reports of visitors from other planets”
A.To give an example of people who do not believe in science.
B.To explain why scientists are not interested in studying aliens.
C.To raise the issue of whether or not we are alone in the universe.
D.To inform people that a spaceship crashed in the American desert.
36.What can be inferred about finding aliens
A.It’s not possible yet. B.It’s already been done.
C.Aliens can be found in the USA. D.Scientists already know the truth.
37.What would be the best title for this passage
A.Visitors from Faraway Planets B.The Life and Times of an Alien Life

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers(天文学家) have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans were here.
“When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already travelled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.
Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced life would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos”.
“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.
