William Butler Yeats, was an Irish poet and dramatist and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century
literature. He was born in Dublin on June 13,1865, His childhood lacked the harmony (和睦) that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments however were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.
Yeats is considered one of the few writers whose greatest works were completed after being awarded the Nobel Prize, which he won in 1923. He continued writing almost to the end of his life, producing his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, as there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between these ages. Such works include The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1929).
After suffering from a variety of illnesses for several years, Yeats died in Menton, 1939. The last poem he wrote was the The Black Tower. After Yeats’s death, W. H. Auden wrote, among others, the falling liners:
Earth, receive an honoured guest:

How do plants grow in space An experiment at the Tiangong space station can provide the answer. Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings (幼苗), which may show us how astronauts can cultivate food to support long-term space flights.
“The rice seedlings are growing very well.” Zheng Huiqiong, a scientist at the Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. Since the rice experiment began on July 29, 2022, the seedlings of the tall shoot rice variety (高杆水稻品种) have reached a height of about 30 centimeters. Plus, the seedlings of the dwarf rice variety (矮秆水稻品种) have grown to around 5 centimeters.
While there have been other rice experiments in space, the one being conducted on Tiangong is the first of its kind. It aims to produce the complete life cycle of the plant, which begins with a seed and ends with a grown plant producing new seeds.
The astronauts will keep studying the plants. If the experiment is successful, they will collect the newly produced seeds and bring them back to Earth for further studies, Zheng added.
Since the 1980s, China has been taking the seeds of crops to space. But growing rice in orbit is a different challenge due to the hard conditions in space. Micro-gravity, no air and high-energy cosmic rays may make it hard for the plants to grow.
Rice has been the most important food for astronauts for a long time. US astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission—the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969—ate freeze-dried chicken and rice during their trip to
space.
If such an experiment goes well, astronauts will be able to grow their food in orbit, reducing how much food has to be taken on space flights.

C.It’s the first experiment to try to produce rice in a complete life cycle.
D.If it works, the newly produced rice plant will be brought back to Earth.
4.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about
A.Future space missions. B.The importance of the rice experiment.

Known as “soft gold”, Gambiered Canton gauze (香云纱) is the only silk fabric (织物) that’s still hand-dyed (手染的) using natural plants in the world today.
The skill has a history of more than 500 years. In 2008, it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家非物质文化遗产). Ouyang Yongze is an inheritor of the dyeing skills from Guangdong. The man started learning the skills in 2017.
The dyeing process includes 30 steps. It can take up to six months and is done by hand with materials from
nature. “The plant shuliang (薯莨), river mud, sunshine, and grass are all important in dyeing,” Ouyang told China Daily.
To dye the fabric, workers put it in shuliang juice and let it dry on the grass. They repeat this many times until it turns brownish yellow. Then, they put river mud on it to help shuliang react fully. After washing and drying it again, the fabric turns black!
Mastering the skills is difficult, according to Ouyang, who put full effort into controlling the density (浓度) of shuliang juice. “Too much may cause color loss, and too little may nor lead to a dark enough fabric,” he said. “Better control of the density comes after many failures.”
Also, the job can be really tiring as workers have to be at work in the sun for 8 hours each day. Only a few people work in the industry, and skilled masters are getting older as fewer young people take part.
Considering this, Ouyang works harder to develop the traditional craft. He has got together other dyeing skills such as tie-dyeing (扎染法) and batik (蜡染) and has worked with famous fashion designers. They turn the silk into both traditional and fashionable clothes that are popular worldwide. He thinks this can help make the craft stay alive and drew people to the industry.
30.Which of the following is the right order of dyeing Gambiered Canton gauze
① Repeat many times until the fabric turns brownish-yellow.
② Dry the fabric on the grass.
③ Put the fabric in Shuliang juice.
④ Put river mud on the fabric to help shuliang react fully.

I was shopping in Whole Foods Market when my cellphone rang. My daughter Julianna told me that she got the job she had applied for. She had just turned 14 and decided to spend this summer vacation on work. The things she wants are both long-term and immediate. She wants to freely buy things from Forever21 and save money for the famous college she’s decided to get into.
Several weeks before her birthday, Julianna asked me whether I’d allow her to work. Some of her friends’parents wouldn’t let their kids work, wanting them to focus on their studies and enjoy the last childhood freedom for as long as possible. I understood those parents. But I wanted her to spend less time on her electronic devices in her room and more time in the outside world.
The day after her birthday, Julianna immediately applied to an amusement park, which hires teens during busy summer months. I’d never seen Julianna so active. The day before the interview, we went over possible questions, including why she wanted to work at the amusement park, its most famous attraction, and what her previous work and volunteering experiences were. She seldom talked about anything else until the interview was over.
I never worked as a young teen. My husband, though, worked as a young teen at an amusement park. He shared some funny stories about his time working there. More importantly, the work contributed to his strong work
ethic (道德准则) today. Studies also show that work can contribute to healthy development and that teens who work at times are more likely to attend four-year colleges and get degrees quickly.

There was once a bat. For him, going out and hunting insects was a terrible amount of effort. He was a lover of comfort. One day, when he happened to look through a window, he saw a bird in its cage. He saw that the bird was given all its food and water without having to do anything at all. So, the bat decided to become a child’s pet.
