The automobile industry is spending billions on self-driving cars, but what if we quite like driving
One holiday a few years ago, I spent hours being transported on trains, buses and planes. I read a novel for a while, then stared out the window, in a black mood. I was turned into goods, being shifted from one location to another. Then, finally, came the exciting section of the holiday when I hired a car.
My wife Jocasta and I followed the positioning system, turning right, then right again, and found ourselves in a small town. I spoke to the positioning system, “We don’t want to be here; we want the highway.” Then it instructed me to turn right again and again. With every turn, the street narrowed. The walls were so close that I had to hold my breath.
Another car appeared, coming towards us from the opposite direction. The driver signaled, telling me I had to make way. But how I didn’t have the courage to back up along the impossibly narrow passage. Soon some locals came to help. One lady stood at the back of the vehicle, waving me on. She continued making “this way, this way” movements with her arms. In an act of blind trust, I followed her instructions, creeping(小心行进)backwards and forwards. Remarkably, it worked. I completed my turn into the side street. The other car passed and the driver gave me a grateful wave. Then I followed the lady’s suggestion and-finally-saw the highway.
My hands were shaking. I breathed in and out. Jocasta turned to me. “You’re my hero,” she said. I looked at her, expecting a shadow of a teasing (嘲笑的)smile, but can find none. “You’re my hero,” she repeated. “I mean it. You did a really good job.” Finally, I managed to steady my nerves. Then we set off again and the car sped smoothly away. Who would exchange all this for a self-driving car
24. What made the author unhappy according to paragraph 2
A. The boredom of a long journey. B. The disconnection from driving.
C. The constant shift in transportation. D. The long distance from the destination
25. Why did the author drive into the narrow passage
A. He wanted to take a shortcut. B. He intended to thank the locals for help
C. He had to turn to avoid another car. D. He was misdirected by the guidance system.
26. What can be inferred about the author and his wife from the last paragraph
A. His wife used to laugh at him. B. He became more skilled at driving.
C. His wife tried to encourage and calm him. D. He misunderstood his wife throughout.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Hero Behind the Wheel B. An Adventurous Automobile Trip
C. A Lover of Self-drive Tours D. An Unexpected Technological Problem
B 25. D 26. C 27. A

根据第二段“One holiday a few years ago, I spent hours being transported on trains, buses and planes. I read a novel for a while, then stared out the window, in a black mood. I was turned into goods, being shifted from one location to another. Then, finally, came the exciting section of the holiday when I hired a car.(几年前的一个假期,我花了几个小时乘坐火车、公共汽车和飞机。我看了一会儿小说,然后望着窗外,心情很不好。我变成了货物,被从一个地方转移到另一个地方。然后,最后,当我租了一辆车时,假期的激动人心的部分到来了)”可推知,让作者不高兴的是不能自己开车。故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“My wife Jocasta and I followed the positioning system, turning right, then right again, and found ourselves in a small town. I spoke to the positioning system, “We don’t want to be here; we want the highway.” Then it instructed me to turn right again and again. With every turn, the street narrowed. The walls were so close that I had to hold my breath.(我和妻子约卡斯塔沿着定位系统向右拐,然后又向右拐,来到了一个小镇。我对定位系统说:“我们不想待在这里;我们想要高速公路。”然后它指示我一次又一次地向右转。每拐一个弯,街道就变得狭窄。墙靠得很近,我不得不屏住呼吸)”可知,导航系统给作者指错了方向。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据““You’re my hero,” she repeated. “I mean it. You did a really good job.” Finally, I managed to steady my nerves. Then we set off again and the car sped smoothly away. Who would exchange all this for a self-driving car (“你是我的英雄,”她重复道。
故选A。
C
People are flying more than ever. From short trips to traveling around the globe, many are on the move. But finding the way at the airports has never been easy in the US, due to crowding and a lot of tasks like checking in, taking care of baggage, screening and finding your gate. It is often difficult to get to where you are going. If you are in a wheelchair or visually (视觉地) challenged, it’s even harder.
The new terminal (航站楼) at the Kansas City International Airport is designed to fix many of these shortcomings. The new facility features indoor play areas, changing rooms, and a quiet room for people who cannot handle the noise or activity of a busy airport. There is even a pet relief area for people traveling with their fury family members. One innovation (创新) is the glass-walled jet bridge for people who are worried about getting on and off planes. And for people who are uncomfortable with the whole airport and flying process, there are simulators (模拟器) that allow travelers to go from boarding to taking off virtually.
Justin Meyer, with the Kansas City Aviation Department, said the new terminal sets a level of inclusivity that passengers will expect in other airports. “The goal isn’t that we’re forever at the head of the line,” Meyer said. “My goal was just to raise the bar, so if someone else wants to build the most accessible airport in the world, they’re going to have to start from where Kansas City stopped. In the end, passengers win.”
While making airports more accessible to people with different abilities may seem to be expensive or difficult, the benefits certainly outweigh the costs. Accessible airports mean that more people and their families will be able to travel and then the skies will be friendly to all.
28. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To call on airports to improve their services.
B. To explain the background to the new terminal.
C. To stress the annoyance of frequent air travelers.
D. To show the complexity of boarding procedures.
29. Who are most likely to use the glass-walled jet bridge
A. People who take a pet. B. People who use a wheelchair.
C. People who travel with their families. D. People who have flight anxiety.
30. What can we know about the new terminal according to Justin Meyer
A. It needs further improvement. B. It has the best passenger services.
C. It sets a higher standard for airport services. D. It aims to lead the world in accessibility.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the Kansas City International Airport’s practice
A. Supportive. B. Conservative. C. Unprejudiced. D. Doubtful.
B 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据第一段“People are flying more than ever. From short trips to traveling around the globe, many are on the move. But finding the way at the airports has never been easy in the US, due to crowding and a lot of tasks like checking in, taking care of baggage, screening and finding your gate. It is often difficult to get to where you are going. If you are in a wheelchair or visually (视觉地) challenged, it’s even harder.(乘坐飞机的人比以往任何时候都多。从短途旅行到环球旅行,许多人都在移动。但在美国,在机场找路从来都不是件容易的事,因为机场很拥挤,而且还有很多事情要做,比如办理登机手续、照看行李、安检和找登机口。到达你要去的地方往往很困难。如果你坐在轮椅上或有视力障碍,那就更难了)”可推知,第一段的主要作用是介绍设计堪萨斯城国际机场新航站楼的背景。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“One innovation (创新) is the glass-walled jet bridge for people who are worried about getting on and off planes.(其中一项创新是玻璃幕墙的喷气桥,为那些担心上下飞机的人提供服务)”可知,有飞行焦虑的人最有可能使用玻璃幕墙式登机桥。
根据倒数第二段““The goal isn’t that we’re forever at the head of the line,” Meyer said. “My goal was just to raise the bar, so if someone else wants to build the most accessible airport in the world, they’re going to have to start from where Kansas City stopped. In the end, passengers win.”(Meyer说:“我们的目标并不是永远站在队伍的最前面。我的目标只是提高标准,所以如果其他人想要建造世界上最便利的机场,他们将不得不从堪萨斯城停止的地方开始。”最终,乘客是赢家。”)”可推知,Justin Meyer认为新航站楼在机场服务方面设立了很高的标准。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“While making airports more accessible to people with different abilities may seem to be expensive or difficult, the benefits certainly outweigh the costs. Accessible airports mean that more people and their families will be able to travel and then the skies will be friendly to all.(虽然让不同能力的人更容易进入机场似乎是昂贵或困难的,但收益肯定大于成本。便利的机场意味着更多的人和他们的家人将能够旅行,然后天空将对所有人都友好)”可推知,作者对堪萨斯城国际机场的做法持支持态度。故选A。

People may typically think of memory as the recollection of the past. Memory enables people to learn from past experiences and apply that knowledge in present circumstances. It is a vital part of our identity. So is culture, the way of life specific to a group of people.
Cultural memory is the constructed understanding of the past that is passed from one generation to the next through text, oral traditions, monuments and other symbols. Cultural memory is often amassed in objects, such as museums or historical monuments. To understand culture, humans access a mass of cultural symbols, such as books. Artifacts (历史文物) of the past provide insights into where we came from. Libraries and the Internet keep a seemingly boundless amount of data on what it means to be part of a culture. Cultural memory is the longest-lasting form of memory.
Like all forms of memory, cultural memory has important functions. For example, it makes the experiences a nation owns clear. It provides us with an understanding of the past and the values of the group to which we belong. Besides, it creates a form of shared identity and a means for communicating this identity to new members. The most powerful forms of cultural memory may involve memories of past disastrous experiences undergone by groups of victims. For example, in Russia, their role in World War Ⅱ — in which tens of millions of Russians were killed — is still an important part of modern Russian identity. Because all groups have cultural memory, it can bring about a spirit of resistance or survival among threatened groups.
The main function of cultural memory is not to recall the past, whether it is good or bad. Rather, it is to use knowledge of past experiences to avoid making the same mistakes again and again. Aleida Assmann, a professor who has worked on memory theory since the 1960s, calls this “remembering forward”. Cultural memory enables people to adapt to their culture; it enables cultures to adapt to new circumstances by keeping traces (痕迹) of what worked in the past.
32. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. Reporting a discovery of cultural memory.
B. Leading to the concept of cultural memory.
C. Introducing the importance of memory in identity.
D. Making a connection between memory and culture.
33. Which can replace the underlined word “amassed” in paragraph 2
A. Stored. B. Overlooked. C. Evaluated. D. Created.
34. Russia is mentioned in paragraph 3 to indicate ________.
A. the features of cultural memory B. the formation of cultural memory
C. the role of big events in Russian identity D. the impact of cultural memory on identity
35. What is cultural memory mainly expected to do
A. Pass previous wisdom down. B. Keep traces of history.
C. Get people to know about the past. D. Remind people of their identity.
B 33. A 34. D 35. A
根据第一段“People may typically think of memory as the recollection of the past. Memory enables people to learn from past experiences and apply that knowledge in present circumstances. It is a vital part of our identity. So is culture, the way of life specific to a group of people.(人们通常认为记忆是对过去的回忆。记忆使人们能够从过去的经验中学习,并将这些知识应用到当前的环境中。这是我们身份的重要组成部分。文化也是如此,是一群人特有的生活方式)”介绍了记忆和文化的含义,然后第二段“Cultural memory is the constructed understanding of the past that is passed from one generation to the next through text, oral traditions, monuments and other symbols.(文化记忆是对过去的理解,通过文字、口头传统、纪念碑和其他符号代代相传)”解释了文化记忆的含义,下文围绕文化记忆的功能展开介绍。
根据划线词后的“in objects, such as museums or historical monuments(在物品中,如博物馆或历史纪念碑)”及下文的“Artifacts (历史文物) of the past provide insights into where we came from.(过去的文物让我们了解我们从何而来)”可知,该处指文化记忆通常在博物馆或历史遗迹等物品中积累,过去的历史文物让我们了解我们从哪里来。 故选A。
根据第三段中的“The most powerful forms of cultural memory may involve memories of past disastrous experiences undergone by groups of victims. (最强大的文化记忆形式可能包括对受害者群体所经历的过去灾难性经历的记忆)”可知,最强大的文化记忆包括受害者群体所经历的过去灾难性事件的记忆。结合下文中列举的“For example, in Russia, their role in World War Ⅱ — in which tens of millions of Russians were killed — is still an important part of modern Russian identity. (例如,在俄罗斯,他们在第二次世界大战中扮演的角色——数千万俄罗斯人在这场战争中丧生——仍然是现代俄罗斯身份的重要组成部分)”可推知,本段提到俄罗斯是为了说明文化记忆对民族认同的影响。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The main function of cultural memory is not to recall the past, whether it is good or bad. Rather, it is to use knowledge of past experiences to avoid making the same mistakes again and again. Aleida Assmann, a professor who has worked on memory theory since the 1960s, calls this “remembering forward”. Cultural memory enables people to adapt to their culture; it enables cultures to adapt to new circumstances by keeping traces (痕迹) of what worked in the past.(文化记忆的主要功能不是回忆过去,不管过去是好是坏。相反,它是利用过去经验的知识来避免一次又一次地犯同样的错误。自20世纪60年代以来一直从事记忆理论研究的阿莱达·阿斯曼(Aleida Assmann)教授将这种现象称为“向前记忆”。文化记忆使人们能够适应他们的文化;它使文化能够通过保留过去的痕迹来适应新的环境)”可推知,文化记忆的主要作用是使人们能够利用从过去的经历中总结的经验或智慧指引现在。故选A。
When I looked at my to-do list recently, I noticed that it was all over the place. It’s hard to tell which tasks are a priority. Some are urgent and some can wait. ____36____
Is there a more effective way to write my to-do list I’ve talked to time management experts. Here are some useful tips.
Follow the two-minute rule. If it takes less than two minutes, just do it right then and there. ____37____ Remember it and do it.
Break each task into smaller ones. ____38____ And what ends up happening is that we don’t get them done because we aren’t expressing them in a doable form. For example, I want to retile my floor. That’s not a to-do list item because there are too many steps packed into one big goal. Instead, I should break the project into smaller action items like “pick tiles”.
____39____ Take one of your existing to-do list tasks and ask “why” repeatedly. For example, why do I want to retile my floor To make my apartment look better. Why Because a beautiful space makes me feel good. Finally, you get to something that feels like a bedrock value of your life. And if you don’t, that’s a sign that the task is unimportant.
Try assigning a task to a time of day. ____40____ For example, you might write your novel from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m., go shopping from 2 p. m. to 3:30 p. m. and do the cleaning from 3:30 to 4 p. m. This method can narrow down how much you can do in a day.
A. Decide what’s important.
B Add big goals to your to-do list.
C. It’s not worth the time to write it down.
D. Choose to write your to-do list on paper.
E. Some are quick to complete, and others take more time.
F. People aren’t specific enough when they write items on their to-do lists.
G. Look at your schedule and figure out when you can get your task done.

A lesson in trust
“Come on, Tuck,” I said, patting the floor of the 4Runner (越野车). “Load. Let’s go for a walk.” Tuck danced nervously at my feet, then sat and looked up at me with sad eyes. He wouldn’t jump in.
This was my first afternoon with the three-year-old border collie (德国牧羊犬) I was adopting, and it was time for the daily hike.
I’d taken Tuck in reluctantly, as a temporary solution for Tammy, my friend. She was trying to find a new home for the dog. Tuck was adopted from a pet store and had been kept long in a cage there, leaving him long-lasting trauma (创伤).
Tammy knew why I wasn’t willing to give Tuck a permanent home. Three months earlier, I’d lost my beloved Bantam, the border collie who’d been my rock for 12 years. I wasn’t ready to let a new dog into my life for good. But I’d agreed to help Tammy out while she continued her search.
Tuck wouldn’t load, no matter how much I coaxed (劝诱). Knowing there was always a reason for a dog’s behavior, I finally lifted the dog up and placed him in the back. “Load,” I said, teaching him the command. “Good boy.”
But every day, when it came time to load for our hike, Tuck still didn’t trust my invitation. At the end of the second week, I became impatient.
Actually, Tuck was a sweet dog and seemed to love everyone. He had this boyish enthusiasm toward strangers.
Days crept into a third week. I found myself appreciating Tuck for who he was. One afternoon, he came to the steps where I sat. He shyly looked at me, then walked over and put one big foot on my knee. At that very moment, I realized that he did show affection, in his own way. But he still refused to load for our hike.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Why wouldn’t Tuck jump into the car

The next afternoon, I called Tuck over and let him watch as I removed the cage from the car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Why wouldn’t Tuck jump into the car I kept wondering about Tuck’s strange behavior. Having changed the command for several times, I lost my patience eventually. “Load,” I ordered angrily, raising my voice. Tuck went down to the ground and put his head on his paws, his eyes full of fear. Seeing this, I gave in. Upon lifting him into the 4Runner as usual, I caught a glimpse of the cage, Bantam’s cage.
The next afternoon, I called Tuck over and let him watch as I removed the cage from the car. After that, I patted the floor of the 4Runner, and said, “Come on now, Tuck. You can trust me.” To my surprise, Tuck jumped up on his own, tail wagging. Mystery solved! Without hesitation, I called Tammy and told her about my decision to give Tuck a permanent home here with me. That afternoon, I realized that while I trying to trust that fostering Tuck was the right thing to do, Tuck was fighting a battle to trust me. My adopted dog, in fact, taught me a lesson in trust.

②由第二段首句内容“The next afternoon, I called Tuck over and let him watch as I removed the cage from the car.(第二天下午,我把Tuck叫过来,让他看着我把笼子从车上搬下来。)”

D. Doubtful.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Why wouldn’t Tuck jump into the car
