At the end of the nineteenth century, an Englishman living in Brazil sent his son Charles Miller across the Atlantic to be educated in England. During his stay in England, Charles grew passionately keen on football and often sharpened his skills in the playground. In 1894, he packed his bags and returned to his family in Brazil. In his bags, he took a football as a souvenir.
Back in Brazil, Charles was willing to consider and accept other people s opinions. When he talked to local people about their leisure activities, it suddenly hit him that he could try to get them interested in football. At first he had little success; the only people who showed any interest were young Englishmen who walked on the street; thus the first game of football in Brazil was played between two teams of young Englishmen, on a field from which the goats and cows had been removed.
Charles asked some journalists to come and see this new English game, but none came along. However, as the weeks went past, the scene of twenty-two young people running around after a ball began attracting viewers from schools nearby. Then, young local men began kicking balls around too.
“Balls” is perhaps the wrong word—the only football in Brazil at the time was the one that Charles Miller had brought back with him from England. The Brazilian viewers had to create their own footballs, using cans or whatever they could find to make them with. After a short period of time, these local viewers could defeat the foreign players easily without proper training. They were gifted in playing the game because they could move more quickly and easily with the ball.
Then, the football game became a great attraction in Sao Paulo. By 1901, there was already a league of clubs in Sao Paulo. The football game burst onto the stage of Brazil s history.
1.Why did Charles Miller take a football to Brazil
A.To be a professional player. B.To organize a football club.
C.To remember his days in the UK. D.To get Brazilians interested in the game.
2.Which word can best describe Charles Miller
A.Talented. B.Successful. C.Popular. D.Open-minded.
3.Where did Charles Miller hold the first football game in Brazil
A.In the playground. B.On a livestock farm.
C.On the street. D.At the stadium.
4.What do we know about the local players
A.They bought footballs from Charles Miller.
B.They were trained by professional players.
C.They were swifter in handling the ball.
D.They attracted many journalists when playing the ball.

If children are playing sport, they should have fun. However, I believe learning that sometimes you will lose is just as important. Participation is great, but let s also give them a goal to reach.
Sport has winners and losers, which is an important part of its make-up. I believe the greatest joy you can get from sport is when you play hard and produce a win or when you and your teammates work together for your goal.
I am a competitive person, but I don t think you re ever too young to start learning that putting effort into something can result in reward. I m not saying winning should be the be-all and end-all of the experience for children, but it should at least be a choice.
Michael Jordan once said, “I ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I ve been trusted to take the game winning shot but missed. I ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Without learning how it feels to win, and just as importantly how it feels to lose, we will bring up children who expect life to be easy. Life is not easy and I believe the sooner children learn that, the better off they are in the long run. But, there does need to be a balance. There are parents who always want to see their children win and will punish them when they make mistakes.
I believe the key is to teach children that they should give their all in an effort to be victorious. It does need to be fun or they won t be interested, but they should be graceful(有风度的) in failure. Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is an example of someone who appears to be the opposite, always in the news for his terrible attitude on court.
5.Which of the following will the author agree with
A.Fewer kids play sport nowadays. B.It is participation that matters most.
C.Competitive sport is important for kids. D.Kids often have unrealistic goals in sport.
6.What does the author want to show by using Jordan s words
A.Life lies in sport. B.Nothing is impossible.
C.Great hopes make great men. D.Failure is the mother of success.
7.What will winning and losing in sport teach children
A.The difficulty of life. B.The role of hard work.
C.The power of teamwork. D.The need for dreaming big.
8.What does the author think of Nick Kyrgios
A.He is not skilled. B.He is not graceful.
C.He sets a good example to kids. D.He pays little attention to success.
