It's said that every Irish “mammy” has her own way to cook Irish stew(炖菜). Simple but satisfying, it has fed the poor over centuries, which makes it a national dish.
The ingredients tell the story. First up, there's the “spud”, as the Irish call the potato. First brought to Ireland in the 16th century, it was an unbelievable food, providing bumper crops that could be stored over the cold winter months. Soon, everyone was eating it—for breakfast, lunch and tea.
With the arrival of the spud, the population increased from one million to eight million in less than three centuries. But this dependence on the vegetable would prove disastrous when crops were struck by disease in the 1840s. The great famine(饥荒) that followed killed over a million people—and forced millions more to run to other countries. It's hard to believe that during the years of famine, Ireland continued to export huge quantities of food to Great Britain, its colonial master at the time.
Today, Ireland is an independent nation. Nobody thinks of the potato famine as they enjoy their Irish stew but there's a bone-deep awareness of the country's strong connection with the spud.
Potatoes are all well and good, but the stew gets its taste from the meat. It used to be made with mutton as it was the only meat available to the poor. However, the only way to make it good enough to eat was to stew it in the pot for hours.
Today, most people use lamb. However, this remains slightly traditional among purists, who also criticize(批评) the addition of ingredients like carrots, parsnips, thyme and other materials bought from a supermarket.

McDonald's food holds plenty of secrets, and Chicken McNuggets(麦乐鸡块) are no exception. The boxed, bite-size pieces of chicken are one of the fast food producer's most popular menu items. But there's something even the most devoted chicken nugget(鸡块) consumers may not know: every nugget that comes out of McDonald's is guaranteed to be one of four different shapes.
Don't worry though; it's not some strange chicken plot. It's the result of a carefully planned process that occurs in McDonald's factories. A Business Insider video, using continuous shooting mode from a McDonald's factory in Canada, offers an inside look into chicken nugget production. Before it goes to the fryer, the ground chicken breast meat that will become Chicken McNuggets goes through a “rolling cookie cutter” machine. The cutter ensures that the nuggets-to-be are all in the same width and one of four shapes. The shapes are the “boot,” the “bell,” the “ball,” and the “bone” (or “bow tie”).
But just how different are the four shapes How do you tell your boots from your bow ties Well, the ball is round, as you might expect. The bone/bow tie looks less like either of those things than like a somewhat bent rectangle(矩形). The bell is diamond-shaped, and the boot really does look somewhat like a wide boot with a thin toe.(Or like a hook, if you turn it over.) Though the shapes are somewhat less different after the batter(面糊) is added, see if you can still identify them the next time you get your Chicken McNuggets.
But why they have special shapes A curious consumer posed the question. A company representative replied that the shapes and their similar sizes ensure that they all take the same time to cook, which is necessary to ensure food safety. Plus, the shapes are fun for kids, and easy to dip for everyone!
And why is four the lucky number Well, the Q&A page claims that “Three would've been too few. Five would've been, like, silly or unreasonable.” Honestly, though, we doubt whether McDonald's consumers would have really cared either way.
28.How are Chicken McNuggets' shapes formed
A.They are processed by a cutting machine.
B.The four shapes are made by the machine freely.
C.Some batter is added to the chicken breast meat.
D.They are the natural forms of the chicken breast meat.
29.What do we know about the shapes of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets
A.The ball and the bell are of the same size.
B.The bone shape is most attractive to small kids.
C.The regular shapes make processing easier and safer.
D.The different shapes can arouse people's imagination.
30.What is the author's attitude to the number four of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets
A.Positive. B.Disapproving.
C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.The history of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets.
B.A warning against eating McDonald's Chicken McNuggets.
C.The introduction of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets' four shapes.
D.An explanation of the processing of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets.

The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas has issued a recent report in order to recommend ways to increase food donation, reduce food waste, and fight hunger, which may help Kenyan leaders meet 2030 food waste reduction goals.
Food donation can reroute eatable food—that would otherwise give off greenhouse gases in a landfill—to those experiencing hunger. According to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, 3.5 million Kenyans, roughly 37 percent of the population, face severe hunger. At the same time, the Policy Atlas reports roughly 40 percent of food produced within Kenya goes to waste. But Broad Leib, Deputy Director of the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC), sees some promising changes. “While progress is not happening as quickly as needed, Kenya's food loss index has been steadily reduced from 1,744 metric tons in 2017, to 1,531 in 2018, and to 1,446 in 2019, indicating a steady improvement and national commitment to food loss reduction,” reports Broad Leib.
According to the Policy Atlas, motivating food donation with rewards is particularly important, which helps food donors and food recovery organizations make up for costs necessary for recovery, storing, processing, and transporting food for donation.
“A major driver of food waste is inconsistent or unclear date labels that cause confusion among all actors along the value chain and limit the ability of businesses to donate food. This increases the likelihood that much safe food will go to waste,” Broad Leib tells Food Tank. However, he acknowledges Kenya's current dual-date(双日期的) labeling law. While food may lose its freshness over time, it is still eatable before expiration(到期). Dual-date labels on packaged food reduce bewilderment by defining dates for both safety and quality. This helps reduce considerable waste and responsibility for donors.
Broad Leib believes that the private sector can also play a significant role in decreasing food waste in Kenya. It is vital for consumer education campaigns. FLPC's research shows that public-private initiatives can help raise awareness among consumers and donors around issues of food waste and food donation.
32.What changes does Broad Leib see
A.People in Kenya no longer suffer hunger.
B.Kenya has gradually reduced its food waste.
C.Kenya is not committed to reducing food loss.
D.Progress in reducing food waste is happening quickly.
33.What does the underlined word “bewilderment” mean in Paragraph 4
A.Sadness. B.Convenience.
C.Confusion. D.Emotion.
34.How can Kenya reduce food waste according to Broad Leib
A.By increasing storehouses.
B.By fighting hunger with rewards.
C.By reducing food produced within the country.
D.By using double-date labels on packaged food.
35.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Consumer education campaigns are the most important.
B.Only the private sector is helpful in reducing food waste.
C.Private and public joint efforts matter around food issues.
D.Broad Leib doesn't agree with FLPC on food waste reduction.

Cooking is one of the most pleasant and important human activities. However, preparing meals is more of a trouble now than a way to celebrate being alive. 36
Start with a plan, which you can find online. Choose whichever day of the week appropriate for your schedule to buy groceries, and use that as your starting point each week. Remember, it doesn't have to be Sunday or Monday. 37 Avoiding the two days will save you a great amount of time and gas money.
38 With this in mind, you'd better check what you have in the fridge and use those as a base to process first to prevent them from going bad! Save your weekly grocery trips for fresh stuff like tomatoes, eggs, and other things that will go bad more quickly.
Make the most of money. Buy ingredients that can be used in many meals. 39 Plus, it's a fun puzzle to see how many ways you can use one ingredient. For example, I love Latin and Asian foods, so I keep things like rice, bell peppers, garlic, and hot sauce on hand at all times.
Cook with others. Who said you had to make all the preparations yourself Get a group of friends to make several different dishes. You'll try something new and get meal inspirations. The goal here is to make life easier. 40
A.Use fresh ingredients first.
B.Try to avoid wasting food.
C.The traffic is too heavy on the two days.
D.Buy items you often use in great amounts.
E.This will keep your taste satisfied and your wallet happy.
F.And that can give you the freedom of mind to enjoy your food.
G.Thankfully, there are lots of small ways you can make cooking easier.

One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat dirty. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.
We carefully began a conversation and spoke about a lot of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,
“May I get you something ”
“A coffee would be nice.”
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,
“How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath ”
“Who ”
“The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.”
I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world's richest and most powerful men!

Several days later, I was delighted to receive a letter informing me that I was employed.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Among all the traditional Chinese foods, my favorite is undoubtedly zongzi, which people eat on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival in memory of Qu Yuan, a famous poet.
The main ingredient of zongzi is sticky rice, but there are a variety of fillings, such as meat and eggs. It usually appears in the shape of a triangle. The taste of zongzi varies from region to region. There are mainly two versions: sweet or salty. But nowadays, young people are open to a mixture of different tastes.
Zongzi is a perfect combination of Chinese culture and food. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
第二节
One possible version:
My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Several months later, I became jobless as my company went bankrupt. The following days saw my struggle to hunt for another suitable job. Then one day, I came across Mr. Galbreath who happened to be my interviewer. I was too nervous to say a word. “Come on, my boy,” Mr. Galbreath said to me in an encouraging voice. Motivated by him, I gathered my courage and made it to the last question confidently.
Several days later, I was delighted to receive a letter informing me that I was employed. I burst into laughter, my eyes shining with excitement. Just as I was sharing the good news with my wife, the telephone rang. “Congratulations! My boy!” the voice of Mr. Galbreath came from the other end of the line. “Thank you for your recognition, Mr. Galbreath,” I said gratefully. “You deserve the position and the salary! You treat everyone with respect and you'll be rewarded with the same kindness and sincerity,”Mr. Galbreath replied.
