It was around 10 o’clock at night and it was raining cats and dogs in our street. Everyone was at home, watching TV, reading or sleeping. However, my mom and I had to run back home from shopping because we didn’t want to get totally wet.
When we reached home, I asked my mom to make some hot pancakes. It would be great to have pancakes during heavy rains. Later, we three sat at the table, having a good conversation as usual while eating delicious pancakes. Suddenly, we heard a noise from somewhere near my house. We got worried and went outside to see what happened.
We saw a dog, abandoned by someone near the pipe next to our house. I could hardly see any other puppies as cute as this dog, shaking and fully wet on that cold rainy night. I felt sorry for the dog and gave my pancakes and some bread to him. He ate it in just a few seconds. Then we decided to take him home. We gave him good food and a hot shower, and dried him with our own towel and named it Charlie.
Ever since that lucky rainy night, Charlie has been with us. Every day, he plays games with us and keeps thieves and unexpected guests out of our home. He loves us as much as we love him. Whenever I have trouble with others, Charlie, my pet dog, will always be there to support me.
Now he is our family member. When someone asks how many people there are in my family, I always say there are four, my mom, my dad, me and Charlie. My pet dog is the best gift I have received in my life.

Some scientists say that animals in oceans are in great danger because of the noise pollution. We all know that ocean animals, especially those with poor eyesight, depend on hearing to find food. However, if their hearing gets hurt by noise, they will be in great danger and even die. The noise mainly comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions (工业水下爆炸), ocean drilling and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes and sounds made by animals themselves.
Decibels measured(分贝测量) in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of 120 decibels on land causes pain to humans' ears, and even makes people deaf. In water, a decibel level of 195 would have the same effect. Some scientists have planned to set a noise limit(限度) of 120 decibels in oceans. They have found that noises at that level can frighten whales.
A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that loud noises could seriously hurt some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing.
This seriously affected the whales' ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed.
Many researchers disagree with a limit of 120 decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. Scientists do not know how many and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists think that noises are a greater danger. It's time for them to take action to help ocean animals. To protect ocean animals, the government can make some laws or rules about ocean noise pollution as soon as possible. People should make a quiet environment for them and give them a beautiful home as before.
36. How can ocean animals find food if they have poor eyesight
A. By smelling what the food is.
B. By touching the food carefully.
C. By listening to where the food is.
D. By making the food closer to them.
37. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The noise limit. B. The loss of hearing.
C. The research team. D. The underwater explosion.
38. Why are many researchers against a limit of 120 decibels
A. It will make whales' ears get hurt.
B. It will do harm to scientists' health.
C. It will make ocean pollution become worse.
D. It will have a bad influence on important research.
39. Which of the following thing will scientists most probably do in the future
A. Count the number of sea animals.
B. Stop their research on the ocean.
C. Study the effects of different noises.
D. Protect sea creatures from harmful noises.
40. Where would you probably read this passage
A. A science magazine. B. A newspaper.
C. A science fiction. D. A story book.

A computer program that could help catch and even translate messages from aliens in outer space has been started by a British scientist.
If aliens are discovered one day, scientists fear their language may make it impossible to understand them. But John Elliott of Leeds Metropolitan University in Britain has come up with a program that can figure out the structure of their language. He thinks that’s the first step in understanding what they are saying.
Dr. Elliott’s program would compare an alien language to a database(数据库)of 60 different languages in the world to look for a similar structure. He thinks that even an alien language will have its own structure. Language has to be structured in a certain way, or it will be harder to use, he told New Scientist magazine.
Research has shown that it is possible to know if a signal carries a language rather than a picture or music. Dr. Elliott has gone a step further by finding a way to pick out what might be words and sentences. Because languages have different word orders, Dr. Elliott has set up a library of the sentence structures of 60 human languages.
If a message is received from outer space, it could be compared against this database. Scientist would then be able to see if it’s similar to any human language, or a mix of the languages.
However, Dr. Elliott also said that in order to translate what the aliens are actually saying, it may still be necessary to have a code book.
41.Why did Dr. Elliott come up with the program
A.To learn more about outer space.
B.To develop a new language.
C.To help translate the messages from aliens.
D.To compare an alien language to human languages.
42.According to Dr. Elliott, what’s the first step of understanding an alien language
A.Coming up with a program. B.Knowing a structure.
C.Understanding aliens. D.Discovering aliens.
43.How does the program work when it receives a message from aliens
A.Mix the message with 60 human languages.
B.Translate the message and send it to the database.
C.Pick out the sentence structure and translate it.
D.Compare the message to the database of 60 languages.
44.According to the passage, which statement is NOT true
A.Even an alien language will have its own structure.
B.It is impossible to know whether a signal carries a language or a picture.
C.If a language has no structure, it will be harder to use.
D.A code book might be needed for the translation of alien language.
45.What can we infer from the story
A.Not all languages have their own structure.
B.The structure of alien languages is similar to that of human languages.
C.To translate alien languages, there is much work to do.
D.Alien languages are signals carrying pictures and music.
