Deforestatio — by clear-cutting or wildfires — has massive consequences both on climate and health. But leaving reforestation to Mother Nature can take decades, particularly as disastrous wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity. And the time, cost and labor involved makes traditional methods of tree planting not as practical as they once were.
Bryce Jones knows how hard it is to replant forests. For four months in 2013, he worked as a tree planter throughout Canada. “There’s no technology there,” he says. “The only way you can accomplish reforestation is through the air.” But it wasn’t until 2019 that he hit on the one that he thought had potential: use drones (无人机) to fire specially designed seed pods (荚) into the ground-at 10 times the normal temperature and costing 20 percent less than traditional methods. He proposed the idea to his brother and Flash Forest was born. His first goal was to plant a billion trees by 2025.
The team took out a loan, bought a drone and used 3D printers at Jones’s school to make casts of the pods. Now, only two and a half years later, the company has a group of drones with each able to carry several thousand pods per flight. Three operators work in a field, controlling five drones, whose flight take 15 to 20 minutes. Flash Forest’s big draw is its seed pod, which contains everything seedlings (幼苗) need to survive survival. And its technology allows them to reach post-burn sites or remote areas that are difficult for traditional tree planting.
There are challenges every day, Jones says, as they work to improve the engineering, hardware, software and seed-pod recipes. Then there are the challenges presented by the climate — this year, record temperatures, record wildfires and drought. “That was something that was totally out of our control,” he says.
Unlike some traditional forms of reforestation, Flash Forest is focused on biodiversity. For Jones, the target of planting a billion trees by 2025 is just the beginning. “I have a dream that the company will plant on six continents — everywhere where our technology is needed,” he says.
24. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 1
A. The benefits of reforestation.
B. The power of AI machines.
C. The way of putting out wildfires.
D. The necessity of using new planting methods.
25. What contributes to the particular appeal of Flash Forest
A. Its drone operators. B. The frequent flights.
C. Its seed pod. D. The low cost of seedlings.
26. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Extreme weather. B. Drone technology.
C. 3D equipment. D. Computer software.
27. What can we infer about Flash Forest from the last paragraph
A. It changed its focus in the past.
B. It will achieve its final target in 2025.
C. It might be available worldwide one day.
D. It has replaced traditional forms of reforestation.
D 25. C 26. A 27. C

根据第一段“Deforestatio — by clear-cutting or wildfires — has massive consequences both on climate and health. But leaving reforestation to Mother Nature can take decades, particularly as disastrous wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity. And the time, cost and labor involved makes traditional methods of tree planting not as practical as they once were.
根据倒数第三段“The team took out a loan, bought a drone and used 3D printers at Jones’s school to make casts of the pods. And its technology allows them to reach post-burn sites or remote areas that are difficult for traditional tree planting.
that为代词,应是代指前文提到的事物,根据前文“Then there are the challenges presented by the climate — this year, record temperatures, record wildfires and drought. (然后是气候带来的挑战——今年,创纪录的气温、创纪录的野火和干旱)”可知,that代指应是前文提到的极端天气。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Unlike some traditional forms of reforestation, Flash Forest is focused on biodiversity. For Jones, the target of planting a billion trees by 2025 is just the beginning. “I have a dream that the company will plant on six continents — everywhere where our technology is needed,” he says. (与一些传统形式的再造林不同,Flash Forest专注于生物多样性。对琼斯来说,到2025年种植10亿棵树的目标仅仅是个开始。他说:“我有一个梦想,公司将在六大洲——任何需要我们技术的地方——建厂。”)”可知,从本段可推断也许Flash Forest以后会推广至全世界。故选C项。

For the past decade, one of the most linguistically (语言学地), diverse places in the world, square mile after square mile, has been my home: Queens, New York.
The soundtrack outside my door is extraordinary: On any given block, passing voices speak varieties of Polish, Ukrainian, Egyptian Arabic, Mexican Spanish, Puerto Rican Spanish, Dominican Spanish, and all the forms of New York City English they give rise to.
As a person who studies languages: I can usually distinguish them from one another, but understand only a part of what people are saying.
Users of Seke, a language from five villages in Nepal with 700 speakers, live a subway ride away. In certain stores, Albanians, Bosnians, Serbs, and Montenegrins all reunite, using the languages of the former Yugoslavia as if the country still existed. No group has a majority, or even 15. percent of the neighborhood, and most are at just 5 or 10 percent. English acts, for the most part, as a vital lingua franca (通用语). This’ last point is crucial, because a city can be a haven (避难所) for diversity but also an end point.
My neighborhood has its signature sound, but there are several dozen others that are just as diverse, each in a different way.
These are the places where the Endangered Language Alliance, the nonprofit I co-direct, has recorded New Yorkers speaking more than 100 languages that the survey and other data sets say don’t officially exist, and more than 700 in total.
That linguistic portrait makes clear that early-21st-century New York City is a last haven for endangered languages—ones that are being hounded out of existence elsewhere. And this deep linguistic diversity is among the least explored but possibly most important factors in New York’s history and makeup. New York’s soul can be found in the existence of these many, many languages, explaining New York’s particular capacity for tolerance and its ability to “make room” for others.
28. What is the author’s occupation
A. An economist. B. A historian. C. A linguist. D. A reporter.
29. What can be inferred about the languages in New York City
A. They are close to disappearing. B. They are mainly spoken by villagers.
C. English is the most popular language. D. Most of them are not officially recognized.
30. What does the underlined word “hounded” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Protected. B. Threatened. C. Respected. D. Accepted.
31. From which book might the text have been taken
A. Language City. B. The Development of Languages.
C. Endangered Languages in New York. D. The Importance of Language Diversity.
C 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据第三段“As a person who studies languages: I can usually distinguish them from one another, but understand only a part of what people are saying.(作为一个研究语言的人:我通常可以区分不同的语言,但只理解人们所说的一部分)”可推知,作者最可能是语言学家。
根据第六段“These are the places where the Endangered Language Alliance, the nonprofit I co-direct, has recorded New Yorkers speaking more than 100 languages that the survey and other data sets say don’t officially exist, and more than 700 in total.(在这些地方,我参与领导的非营利组织濒危语言联盟记录了纽约人说的100多种语言,而调查和其他数据集显示,这些语言并不正式存在,总共有700多种)”可知,在纽约市有很多语言并没有被官方认可。
根据第一段“For the past decade, one of the most linguistically (语言学地), diverse places in the world, square mile after square mile, has been my home: Queens, New York.(在过去的十年里,世界上语言最多样化的地方之一,一平方英里又一平方英里,一直是我的家:纽约皇后区)”结合文章主要介绍了作者所在的纽约皇后区的语言多样性,21世纪初的纽约市是濒危语言的最后避难所。 故选A。

In the 1970s, a psychologist named J.P.Guilford dared to conduct a famous study of creativity—the nine-dot puzzle. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page.
All the participants in his study limited the possible solutions to those within the imaginary square. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement (束缚) and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. The fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford to jump to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box.
The nine-dot puzzle and the phrase “thinking outside the box” became metaphors for creativity. Speakers, trainers, training program developers, organizational consultants, and university professors all had much to say about the vast benefits of outside-the-box thinking. Management consultants even used this puzzle when making sales talk to prospective clients. Because the solution is deceptively simple, clients tended to admit they should have thought of it themselves. Because they hadn’t, they were obviously not as creative or smart as they had previously thought and needed to call in creative experts.
The smash hit carried the world before one until two different research teams-Clarke Burnham with Kenneth Davis, and Joscph Alba with Robert Weinberg—ran another experiment, using the same puzzle but a different research procedure and bothered to check the facts.
Both teams followed the same way of dividing participants into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions as the participants in Guilford’s experiment. The second group was told that the solution required the lines to be drawn outside the imaginary box bordering the dots. Most people assume that 60 percent to 90 percent of the group given the clue would solve the puzzle easily. However only 25 percent did. In statistical terms, this 5 percent improvement over the subjects of Guilford’s original study is insignificant.
Solving this problem requires people to literally think outside the box. Yet participants’ performance was not improved even when they were given specific instructions to do so. That this advice is useless should effectively have killed off the much widely circulated—and therefore, much more dangerous—metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking stimulates receptivity. After all, with one simple experiment, researchers had proven that the conceptual link between thinking outside the box and creativity was a myth.
32. What did the nine-dot puzzle study focus on
A. Visual perception
B. Practical experience
C. Thinking patterns
D. Theoretical knowledge.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. The clients were less creative than they had been.
B. The nine-dot puzzle was beneficial in solving various problems.
C. Outside-the-box thinking enjoyed strong popularity and appeal.
D. Management consultants considered themselves creative experts.
34. Which of the following best describes the follow-up experiment
A. Revealing
B. Mysterious.
C. Misleading.
D. Groundless.
35. Which is the best title for the passage
A. Nine-Dot Puzzle:A Magic Test
B. Solving Puzzle:A Key To Creativity
C. Creative Thinking:We Fell For The Trap
D. Thinking Outside the Box:A Misguided Idea
C 33. C 34. A 35. D
根据第一段“He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page.(他要求研究对象只用四条直线连接所有九个点,而不用把铅笔从纸上抬起来)”和第二段的“All the participants in his study limited the possible solutions to those within the imaginary square. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement (束缚) and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. (在他的研究中,所有参与者都将可能的解决方案限制在虚方范围内。只有20%的人成功地打破了虚幻的束缚,并在圆点周围的空白中继续他们的线条)”可知,九点拼图的研究重点是思维模式,故选C项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The nine-dot puzzle and the phrase“thinking outside the box”became metaphors for creativity. Speakers, trainers, training program developers, organizational consultants, and university professors all had much to say about the vast benefits of outside-the-box thinking.(九点连线问题和“跳出思维定势”这个短语成为了创造力的象征。演讲者、培训师、培训项目开发者、组织顾问和大学教授都对跳出思维定势的好处发表了很多看法。)”可推理出,跳出思维定势具有很强的流行性和吸引力,故选C项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“That this advice is useless should effectively have killed off the much widely circulated—and therefore, much more dangerous—metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking stimulates receptivity. After all, with one simple experiment, researchers had proven that the conceptual link between thinking outside the box and creativity was a myth.(他们的表现也没有得到改善。这一建议毫无用处,这应该有效地扼杀了广泛流传的、因此也更危险的比喻,即跳出思维定势的思维激发了接受性。毕竟,通过一个简单的实验,研究人员已经证明,跳出思维定势和创造力之间的概念联系是一个神话)”可推理出第二个实验有启示作用,即它揭示了“跳出思维定式”没有多大用处。故选A项。
根据第一段“In the 1970s, a psychologist named J.P.Guilford dared to conduct a famous study of creativity—the nine-dot puzzle.( 20世纪70年代,一位名叫J.P.Guilford的心理学家敢于进行一项著名的创造力研究——九点拼图。)”、第二段“The fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford to jump to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box.( 事实上,80%的参与者实际上被正方形的边界蒙蔽了双眼,这让吉尔福德得出了一个笼统的结论:创造力需要你跳出框框)”、第三段“The nine-dot puzzle and the phrase“thinking outside the box”became metaphors for creativity. Speakers, trainers, training program developers, organizational consultants, and university professors all had much to say about the vast benefits of outside-the-box thinking.(九点连线问题和“跳出思维定势”这个短语成为了创造力的象征。演讲者、培训师、培训项目开发者、组织顾问和大学教授都对跳出思维定势的好处发表了很多看法。)”以及最后一段“That this advice is useless should effectively have killed off the much widely circulated—and therefore, much more dangerous—metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking stimulates receptivity. After all, with one simple experiment, researchers had proven that the conceptual link between thinking outside the box and creativity was a myth.(他们的表现也没有得到改善。

根据前文“If you are trying to assess a person’s character, make sure you do not rely too heavily on factors that can be misleading. Instead, observe the individual’s ability to tell the truth and to commit.(如果你试图评估一个人的性格,确保你不要过于依赖可能会误导人的因素。相反,观察一个人说真话和承诺的能力)”可知,此处在讲述应该通过哪些方面去评估一个人的性格,所以E项“Also, pay attention to his attitude and try to distinguish how it impacts his life.(同时,注意他的态度,并试着区分它是如何影响他的生活的)”符合此处主题,承接上文,讲述通过他的态度去评估一个人的性格。故选E项。
【37题详解】
根据前文“You can tell a lot about a person’s character by observing how he treats other people.(你可以通过观察一个人如何对待别人来了解他的性格)”可知,D项“This includes both people he knows and people he does not know.(这包括他认识的人和他不认识的人)”是对前句提及的“别人”的详细补充,符合文意。故选D项。
根据前文“Whether or not a person is honest says a lot about his character. The attitude a person has about honesty can also indicate what type of person he is.(一个人是否诚实在很大程度上反映了他的性格。一个人对诚实的态度也可以表明他是什么类型的人)”可知,本段主要讲述了通过观察一个人是否诚实来评估他的性格,所以F项“Observe the person’s conversations and try to determine how often he tells lies.(观察这个人的谈话,试着确定他说谎的频率)”符合本段主题。故选F项。
【39题详解】
分析设空处,位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“The word “commitment” often causes people to instantly think of close relationships. Whether a person can respect the vows (誓约) and agreements is usually an indication of character.(“承诺”这个词通常会让人们立刻联想到亲密的关系。一个人是否能尊重誓言和协议通常是一个人性格的标志)”可知,本段主要讲述通过观察一个人是否能遵守承诺来评估一个人的性格,所以B项“The level of commitment indicates the type of character he has.(承诺的程度表明了他的性格类型)”符合本段主题,其中commitment为同词复现。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据前文“A person’s character is affected by his attitude.(一个人的态度影响他的性格)”可知,本段主要讲述一个人对事物的态度会影响他的性格,所以G项“Some people generally have a negative outlook while others may try to be positive even in difficult situations.(有些人通常持消极态度,而有些人即使在困难的情况下也会努力保持积极态度)”是对前文的详细解释,符合文意。

Dear Andrew,
Thank you for your asking me about whether to introduce some knowledge of British history in our upcoming lessons. However, I believe that it isn’t necessary.
Our focus should be on improving students’ English language skills. While learning about British culture is interesting, it may not be directly relevant to their language development. Therefore, I suggest we continue with our current lesson plan.
However, if there is a specific aspect of British history that relates to the language or culture, we can certainly incorporate it into our lessons. But overall, our primary objective should be to improve students’ language proficiency.
Best regards.
Yours,
Li Hua

That was a big competition. We all knew it. The entire school was filled with excitement and anticipation. It was the annual choir(合唱) competition, and we were determined to participate despite knowing that many of us were not the best singers.
As the class monitor, I felt responsible for calling in my classmates and convincing them to join the chorus. I knew it wouldn’t be easy; some of them were hesitant and gave me skeptical looks, while others ran away. But I wasn’t ready to give up.
With a persuasive tone and genuine enthusiasm, I spoke to my classmates, explaining why it was important for us to participate as a team. I told them that it wasn’t about being the best, but about coming together and enjoying the experience of singing as a group. Slowly, I started to see some students were interested and a few of them promised to give it a try.
Our rehearsals (排练) were intense, filled with laughter, and sometimes frustration. We tried our best to perfect our harmonies and cooperation, but deep down, we still held onto the belief that we would probably end up at the bottom of all-the choirs. In that moment of despair, a boy from our choir whispered, “Are we just asking for humiliation(羞辱) ” The words made our doubts and fears stronger.
But right before it was our turn to step onto the stage, Mrs. Wood, our music teacher, brought us together in a tight group. She looked into our eyes and said firmly, “We are not here to impress; we are here to express.” Her words made all the difference.
With an understanding of the true meaning of our performance, we stepped onto the stage. As the music started, we sang from our hearts. We didn’t worry about being perfect or winning the competition; we focused on expressing our love for music and the joy of singing together.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
When the performance ended, our headmaster stepped onto the stage.

The competition results were announced later, and we were awarded a special medal for our team spirit.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When the performance ended, our headmaster stepped onto the stage. Standing on the stage, he presented his appreciation to us for our actively taking part in the competition, and congratulated us for our successfully performing the whole song. Excited and thrilled, we students applauded warmly, showing our approval for him and expressing thanks to ourselves for our joint efforts. For now, we were not concerned about what results we would get, but enjoyed the precious moment on the stage, when we expressed ourselves thoroughly. With our warm applause and cheers, the headmaster stepped off the stage with satisfaction.
The competition results were announced later, and we were awarded a special medal for our team spirit. Not getting the top prize, we were not sad at all, instead, we were proud of ourselves and were giving thanks to each other for our team spirit. We all believed that the experience of participating in the competition would remain in our hearts for a long time, for it was not only a reward for our efforts, but also a proof of our way to express ourselves through singing. It was after the competition that I came to enlightenment that competition is not a real competition, but a test of ourselves, and only when we stepped out bravely, could we understand its meaning.

The team took out a loan bought a drone and used 3D printers at Jones’s school to make casts of the pods.
