On February 20, the science fiction magazine Clarkesworld was forced to stop accepting any new articles from writers after it was flooded with AI-written stories.
“By the time we closed on the 20th, we had received 500 human-written stories and 700 AI-written ones,” said editor-in-chief Neil Clarke. “It was increasing at such a speed that we figured that by the end of the month, we would have doubled the number of articles we normally have. The rate had been growing from previous months, and we were concerned that we had to do something to stop it.”
Worries about AI misuse have frequently appeared in headlines recently, particularly since the launch of ChatGPT in November, 2022, which can not only answer a broad range of questions, but also create original poems and stories.
Clarke said magazines like his, which pay contributors for their work, were being targeted by people trying to make quick money. He said he had already spoken to editors of other magazines and that all of them had agreed to stop accepting AI-written articles. He also admitted that the humor of his sci-fi magazine being targeted by AI robots is not lost on him.
“You know, our mascot (吉祥物) is a robot. So we see the irony,” he said. “But the thing is that science fiction is often intended to give a warning to people. We don’t celebrate technology just because it exists. We want to make sure that we’re using it right. And there are some significant legal and moral issues around this technology that we’re not ready to accept.
Clarke said the magazine didn’t know how to deal with the issue, and part of the motivation to speak out was in the hope of finding some solutions. He also said the quality of the AI-written stories was very poor.
4. What’s the matter with the magazine Clarkesworld
A. It will close down forever. B. It was targeted by AI writers.
C. It stopped paying contributors. D. It has lost many good authors.
5. What can we infer about other magazines’ attitude to the AI-written stories
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Unknown. D. Tolerant.
6. What does Neil Clarke say about science fiction
A. It often intends to find some solutions.
B. It welcomes the existing new technologies.
C. It will accept AI-written stories in the near future.
D. It often tries to warn the dark side of technologies.
7. Where is this text most likely from
A. A notice. B. A science fiction. C. A news report. D. A book review.

More than 80 percent of global heat is absorbed by the ocean, which has a massive capacity to store and give off heat. High sea-surface temperatures are causing long-term damage to coral reefs (珊瑚礁). Corals are dying. The IPCC (政府间气候变化专门委员会) projects that up to 90 percent of coral reefs could disappear if global warming reaches 1.5℃. Another reason corals are in trouble is because of ocean acidification. Higher carbon dioxide levels have shift ed the chemistry of the ocean, making it more acidic, and corals and sea creatures have trouble growing in acidic conditions.
When ocean water warms, it expands in volume. This is a major cause of the rise in sea levels, along with the water added to the ocean by the melting of land-based glaciers (冰川). The sea level has risen by an average of 20 centimeters since the late 19th century, and the research by scientists studying the last 25 years of satellite data found that the ocean water is rising faster and faster. If it continues at its current rate, the rise in sea level by 2100 will be more than double the current estimates. Sea level rise leads to the destruction of coastal wetlands, flooding and damage to water ecosystems.
Temperature and precipitation (沉淀) are key elements of climate. A warmer climate means that more water rises from both the land and ocean, and a warmer atmosphere holds more of that water. Scientists have noticed that there are more heavy rainfall events. Additionally, higher water temperature in streams, lakes, and rivers lead to lower levels of dissolved oxygen in the water, which impacts the survival and populations of fish and other sea life.
Especially troubling are the extreme weather events that are happening more often around the world. Hurricanes are ramping up in intensity, particularly in North Atlantic. The year 2017 was a busy one for Atlantic hurricanes. Meanwhile, in the western United States, the state of California has had record-setting drought conditions, which began in 2012.
8. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 1
A. Global warming has little damage to the land. B. Ocean acidification affects the sea temperature.
C. Coral reefs are in danger of disappearing. D. Corals and sea creatures need critical surroundings.
9. What can be known from Paragraph 2
A. Sea level rise has positive effect on sea animals.
B. By 2100 the sea level will rise 20 centimeters.
C. Global heating is the direct cause of wetlands destruction.
D. The rise of sea level is beyond our imagination.
10. What does the underlined part “ramping up” in last paragraph mean
A. Increasing. B. Failing. C. Appearing. D. Changing.
11. Which is the suitable title for the text
A. High Sea-surface Temperatures to Creatures B. Global Warming, What Damages It Causes
C. Ways to Stop High Sea-surface Temperatures D. Extreme Weather Events and Global Warming
D
Total solar eclipses (日食) have scared people since time out of mind. The first record of one, preserved on a clay tablet found at Ugarit, once a trade city but destroyed later in Syria, is believed from its age and location to describe either an eclipse that happened in 1375 BC or one in 1223 BC. Legendary explanations for eclipses include the Sun being eaten by dogs, frogs or dragons. The reality is not romantic. Why are total ones, like the one coming on April 8, so rare
Solar eclipses are a special case of phenomena called transits and occultations, in which an intervening (介于中间的) heavenly body stops light from a star reaching an observer. If the blocking body appears smaller in the sky than the star, the result is called a transit and looks like a dark spot crossing the star’s surface. If the blocking object appears larger than the star, the star disappears completely—an occultation. A total eclipse is an occultation.
Solar eclipses may be either of these things, since the apparent sizes in the sky of the Sun and the Moon, viewed from Earth, are almost identical. If the Moon orbited Earth in the same plane as Earth orbits the Sun, eclipses would happen every month, but would be total only in the tropics In reality, the average interval between total eclipses is 18 months, and they may be seen from time to time all over the world. The path of totality across Earth’s surface is narrow and the period short (a maximum of just over seven and a half minutes). Outside these boundaries, the Sun will appear partially eclipsed, looking like a pie that something has taken a bite from.
The Great North American Eclipse, as it has been called, will be a sight to be hold on April 8. But it should also be cherished, because total eclipses of the Sun will not happen for ever. Tidal friction (潮汐摩擦) causes the Moon to move away from Earth at 3.8 cm a year, making it appear smaller and smaller in the sky. In 600 million years or so the last, short totality will occur.
12. What does the clay tablet of Ugarit represent
A. Some figures of ancient animals.
B. The Sun being eaten by some animals.
C. Ancient people who were hunting for animals.
D. The earliest total solar eclipse recorded.
13. How does the author develop paragraph 2
A. By listing statistics. B. By giving definitions.
C. By giving examples. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
14. What can we learn about total solar eclipses from paragraph 3
A. Their duration is relatively longer. B. They take place every month actually.
C. They are visible only from a narrow path. D. They look like a bite taken out of the Sun.
15. What makes total solar eclipses so rare
A. The moving-away Moon.
B. The stronger tide on Earth.
C. The smaller attraction of the Moon for Earth.
D. The changing distance between the Sun and Earth.

The canteen was crowded with summer campers from high schools across the city, all extremely hungry after a days’ activities. I spotted an empty place and walked there. Just as I put my tray (餐盘) down, I felt a bump against my hip. The tray dropped on the table and the soup spilled all over my camp shirt and jeans. And I heard a burst of laughter.
“Can’t you look where you are going, you clumsy fool!” I shouted, glaring at the troublemaker, a tall boy with wild hair.
“Sorry! Can’t help laughing! You look so funny!” said the boy, bending over with laughter. I was too annoyed to respond and just walked away to change my clothes.
The next morning, we all assembled for roll-call (点名), when I saw the same boy run out of the dorm, with his unbuttoned shirt flying behind him. Before he could slide into his place,he was spotted by the Camp Commandant. As a punishment for being late,he was made to do a hundred push-ups. As I walked past him later. I let out a loud laugh, saving, “Sorry. I can’t help laughing. You look so funny.”
So the war of words continued in the following three days with the wild-haired boy whose name, I found out, was Ben.
A mountain hike marked the last day of the camp. On the way back, I found myself left far behind my team. Soon, they were out of sight. The camp site was a long way away and I was getting anxious as night fell. I risked taking a short-cut (近路) clinging to the mountain side, but suddenly, I tripped off the path and slid right down the slope (斜坡).
Fortunately, my fall was stopped by a bunch of bamboo. I saw I was about ten meters below the track. There was no way I could climb up the slope as evidently I had my ankle broken. After making several vain attempts, I waited hopelessly. It got dark and I became increasingly afraid.
Paragraph 1:
Then, I saw a faint light, and heard a voice calling out my name.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The next day, as we were boarding the buses which would take us back to our own homes, Ben came up to me.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________泰安一中新校区2023~2024学年度第二学期高二年级

【答案】4 B 5. A 6. D 7. C

C
Hurricanes are ramping up in intensity particularly in North Atlantic.
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第一段“The IPCC (政府间气候变化专门委员会) projects that up to 90 percent of coral reefs could disappear if global warming reaches 1.5℃. Another reason corals are in trouble is because of ocean acidification. Higher carbon dioxide levels have shift ed the chemistry of the ocean, making it more acidic, and corals and sea creatures have trouble growing in acidic conditions.(政府间气候变化专门委员会预测,如果全球变暖达到1.5℃,高达90%的珊瑚礁可能会消失。珊瑚陷入困境的另一个原因是海洋酸化。更高的二氧化碳水平改变了海洋的化学成分,使其更具酸性,珊瑚和海洋生物在酸性条件下难以生长)”可知,珊瑚礁处于消失的危险中。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The sea level has risen by an average of 20 centimeters since the late 19th century, and the research by scientists studying the last 25 years of satellite data found that the ocean water is rising faster and faster. If it continues at its current rate, the rise in sea level by 2100 will be more than double the current estimates.(自19世纪末以来,海平面平均上升了20厘米,科学家对过去25年的卫星数据进行研究后发现,海水上升的速度越来越快。如果以目前的速度继续下去,到2100年海平面的上升幅度将是目前估计的两倍多)”可知,海平面上升的速度超乎人们的想象。故选D。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Especially troubling are the extreme weather events that are happening more often around the world.(尤其令人不安的是世界各地越来越频繁发生的极端天气事件)”以及后文“The year 2017 was a busy one for Atlantic hurricanes.(2017年是大西洋飓风频发的一年)”可知,飓风的强度在增加。 故选A。
根据第一段“More than 80 percent of global heat is absorbed by the ocean, which has a massive capacity to store and give off heat. High sea-surface temperatures are causing long-term damage to coral reefs (珊瑚礁).(全球80%以上的热量被海洋吸收,海洋具有巨大的储存和释放热量的能力。高海面温度正在对珊瑚礁造成长期损害)”以及第二段“When ocean water warms, it expands in volume. This is a major cause of the rise in sea levels, along with the water added to the ocean by the melting of land-based glaciers (冰川).(当海水变暖时,它的体积会膨胀。这是海平面上升的一个主要原因,同时也是陆地冰川融化向海洋中增加的水的主要原因)”结合文章介绍了全球变暖对海洋环境的危害以及对全球气候的影响。故B项“全球变暖,它造成了什么损害”最能概括全文,适合作文章标题。故选B。

D 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中“The first record of one, preserved on a clay tablet found at Ugarit, once a trade city but destroyed later in Syria, is believed from its age and location to describe either an eclipse that happened in 1375 BC or one in 1223 BC. (最早的日食记录保存在Ugarit的一块泥板上,乌加里特曾是一个贸易城市,但后来在叙利亚被摧毁。从它的年代和位置来看,人们认为它可以描述发生在公元前1375年或公元前1223年的日食。)”可知,Ugarit的一块泥板描绘了第一份日全食的事实,这是有记录以来最早的日全食。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Solar eclipses are a special case of phenomena called transits and occultations, in which an intervening (介于中间的) heavenly body stops light from a star reaching an observer. If the blocking body appears smaller in the sky than the star, the result is called a transit and looks like a dark spot crossing the star’s surface. If the blocking object appears larger than the star, the star disappears completely—an occultation. A total eclipse is an occultation. (日食是一种特殊的现象,被称为凌日和掩星,在这种现象中,一个介入的天体阻挡了来自恒星的光到达观测者。如果阻塞体在天空中看起来比恒星小,结果就被称为凌日,看起来像一个穿过恒星表面的黑点。如果被遮挡的物体看起来比恒星大,恒星就会完全消失——这就是掩星。日全食就是掩星。)”可知,第二段主要阐释了transit(凌日)和 occultation(掩星)两种自然现象,对这两种现象给出了定义。
根据第三段中“The path of totality across Earth’s surface is narrow and the period short (a maximum of just over seven and a half minutes). (全食穿过地球表面的路径很窄,周期也很短(最长不过7分半钟)。)”可知,日全食穿过地球表面的路径很窄,周期也很短(最长不过7分半钟)。由此可推断,日全食可见的路径窄。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Tidal friction (潮汐摩擦) causes the Moon to move away from Earth at 3.8 cm a year, making it appear smaller and smaller in the sky. (潮汐摩擦使月球以每年3.8厘米的速度远离地球,使它在天空中显得越来越小。)”可知,潮汐摩擦导致月球逐渐远离地球,使其在天空中显得越来越小。由此可知,我们以后再想见到日全食将会越来越难。故选A。

So the war of words continued in the following three days with the wild-haired boy, whose name, I found out, was Ben.
The next day, as we were boarding the buses which would take us back to our own homes, Ben came up to me.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Then, I saw a faint light, and heard a voice calling out my name, I started screaming out loud for help, but my voice sounded so weak down from the slope. Scared and exhausted, I couldn’t help thinking that maybe the campers wouldn’t find me and I would die alone in the mountain. Finally, I heard “There he is. I was saved, thank goodness!” I told them that I had hurt my ankle, and they helped me slowly back to the camp. The next day I was going home for treatment.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, as we were boarding the buses which would take us back to our own homes, Ben came up to me. He said, “This isn't funny at all. I hope you will get better soon.” “Thank you. I hope we can be friends from now on.” I said. So the battle between me and the wild-haired boy was over, and a new friendship between us started.
通读全文首先要解决好五个W和一个H的问题, 即理清人物who、地点where、时间when、事件what、原因why及怎样发展how。
【点睛】续写部分描写详略得当,且使用了大量高级词汇和高级句子,如 exhausted(筋疲力尽的), can’t help doing sth.(忍不住做某事);以及宾语从句加伴随状语( Scared and exhausted, I couldn’t help thinking that maybe the campers wouldn't find me and I would die alone in the mountain.),为文章增色不少。
