Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37, 500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support grassroots education project in Africa, Asia and South America.
The pair, who set off from London, thought their journey was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometers from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Rich and Nick over three days. On arrival in Chepen, Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.
The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle (应对) deserts and jungles. They also survived an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.
Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa, Asia and South America. They witnessed firsthand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They visited Congolese refugees (难民) in camps in Eastern Burundi. They witnessed how education could free sex-workers in Delhi and victims of human trafficking in Nepal.
Talking about their motivation, Richard said, “The world’s leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but, in spite of this promise, over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school; many more are in school, though still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”
4. Why did the two teachers travel the world
A. To support an education project. B. To create a new world record.
C. To entertain themselves. D. To challenge themselves.
5. How far did the two teachers pull the tuk-tuk each day on average
A. A little more than 30 kilometers. B. About 14 miles.
C. 43 miles. D. 70 kilometers.
6. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. How they realized their next goal.
B. Their exciting experience on the road.
C. The beautiful scenery of famous mountains.
D. The difficulties and dangers they faced in the journey.
7. Which of the following best describes the two teachers
A. Curious and brave. B. Humorous and generous.
C. Courageous and responsible. D. Efficient and honest.
A 5. B 6. D 7. C

Drive through any suburb in the U. S. today, and it’s hard to miss the recycling bins that have become companions to America’s trash cans. Recycling has become common, as people recognize the need to care for the environment. Yet most people’s recycling awareness extends (延伸) only as far as paper, bottle, and cans. People seldom find themselves facing the growing problem of e-waste.
E-waste rapidly increases as the techno-fashionable frequently upgrade to the most advanced devices, and the majority of them end up in landfills (填埋). Some people who track such wastes say that users throw away nearly 2 million tons of TVs, VCRs, computers, cell phones, and other electronics every year. Unless we can find a safe replacement (替代品), this e-waste may get into the ground and poison the water with dangerous toxins (霉素), such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. Burning the waste also dangerously contaminates the air.
However, e-waste often contains reusable silver, gold, and other electrical materials. Recycling these materials reduces environmental problems by reducing both landfill waste and the need to look for such metals, which can destroy ecosystems.
A growing number of states have passed laws to ban (禁止) getting rid of e-waste. Still, less than a quarter of this waste will reach lawful recycling programs. Some companies advertising safe disposal (处理) in fact merely ship the waste to some developing countries, where it still ends up in landfills. These organizations prevent progress by unsafely disposing of waste in an out-of-sight, out-of-mind location.
However, the small but growing number of cities and corporations that do handle e-waste responsibly represents progress toward making the world a cleaner, better place for us all.
8. What can we know from the first paragraph
A. E-waste cannot be put into trash cans in the U. S.
B. Many Americans now have access to recycling bins.
C. Most Americans have realized the dangers of e-waste.
D. Most of America’s trash cans are made of recycled material.
9. Which can best replace the underlined word “contaminates” in Paragraph 2
A. Pollutes. B. Heats. C. Attacks. D. Reduces.
10. What can we learn according to paragraph 4
A. Much e-waste is still not properly handled.
B. Some developing countries welcome e-waste.
C. Laws have played a major role in getting rid of e-waste.
D. The e-waste buried in the landfills won’t destroy ecosystem.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To tell us how to recycle &waste.
B. To talk about the future of e-waste.
C. To discuss if it’s necessary to, recycle e-waste.
D. To encourage people to deal with e-waste properly.
B 9. A 10. A 11. D
根据第一段中“ Drive through any suburb in the U. S. today, and it’s hard to miss the recycling bins that have become companions to America’s trash cans. (今天,在美国任何一个郊区开车,你都很难错过那些与美国垃圾桶形影不离的回收箱)”可推知,从第一段我们可以知道许多美国人现在可以使用回收箱。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段中“Unless we can find a safe replacement (替代品), this e-waste may get into the ground and poison the water with dangerous toxins (霉素), such as lead, mercury, and arsenic.”(除非我们能找到安全的替代品,否则这些电子垃圾可能会进入地下,并使水中含有危险的毒素,如铅、汞和砷。)以及划线单词句中“Burning the waste also dangerously…”(焚烧垃圾也会……) 故选A项。
根据第四段“A growing number of states have passed laws to ban (禁止) getting rid of e-waste. Still, less than a quarter of this waste will reach lawful recycling programs. Some companies advertising safe disposal (处理) in fact merely ship the waste to some developing countries, where it still ends up in landfills. These organizations prevent progress by unsafely disposing of waste in an out-of-sight, out-of-mind location.”(越来越多的州已经通过了禁止处理电子垃圾的法律。 故选A项。
根据最后一段“However, the small but growing number of cities and corporations that do handle e-waste responsibly represents progress toward making the world a cleaner, better place for us all.”(然而,越来越多的城市和公司负责任地处理电子垃圾,这代表着我们朝着让世界变得更清洁、更美好的方向取得了进步。)
D
Working out for 30 minutes every day “might not be enough” to fight against the health problems created by long time sitting, according to a sweeping new study.
The new study, unlike the past ones that examined sitting and formal exercise separately, paying little attention to light activities, involved 3,702 people to find out how those all affected people’s health indices (指数).
With the data collected, researchers characterized people by how they moved. The first group dutifully exercised for a half-hour and then sat, almost nonstop, for more than 10 hours a day. Another group similarly worked out for 30 minutes and sat for long hours. But, in between, they rose often and took walks around, spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee. The third group sat, without any stop, for up to 10 hours, but also collected an hour of exercise most days. The final group, which the researchers named “the movers,” exercised about an hour most days, while also moving lightly for about two hours more.
When the researchers cross-checked these groups against people’s current health data, the first group had the worst indices. Different from the first group, the other groups were all better off and to about the same extent, with relatively improved blood sugar control and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels and about 8 percent less body fat than the first group.
“A single 30-minute, daily workout ‘might not be enough’ to reduce the bad effects of longtime sitting,” said Vahid Farrahi, the lead author of the new study. “In addition to a brisk (轻快的) workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.”
12. How is the new study different from the previous ones
A. It examined sitting and exercise separately.
B. It proved that light activities were ignored.
C. It suggested working out for a half-hour.
D. It took light activities into consideration.
13. What do we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4
A. The first group spent one hour on light activities after long sitting.
B. The third group collected an hour’s exercise during 10 hours’ sitting.
C. The second group got similar improved health indices as the movers.
D. The movers got up every 30 minutes for formal exercise for four hours.
14. What light activity is suggested to take in the last paragraph
A. Reading while sitting. B. Walking in the gym hall.
C. Working out in the gym. D. Swimming in the pool.
15. What can we infer from Vahid’s words
A. Moving lightly and often is more useful than we have thought.
B. It’s better to exercise more often than half an hour every day.
C. Working out harder and longer is better than just moving lightly.
D. A 30-minute workout has little help for long time sitting problems.
D 13. C 14. B 15. A
根据第二段“The new study, unlike the past ones that examined sitting and formal exercise separately, paying little attention to light activities, involved 3,702 people to find out how those all affected people’s health indices (指数). (过去的研究将坐着和正式锻炼分开研究,极少关注轻度活动。新研究与过去的研究不同,对3702人进行了调查,以便找出所有这些活动是如何影响人们健康指数的。)”可知,新的研究与过去的研究的不同之处在于它把轻度活动一并纳入了研究之中。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Another group similarly worked out for 30 minutes and sat for long hours. But, in between, they rose often and took walks around, spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee.(另一组同样每天锻炼30分钟,长时间坐着。但是,在休息期间,他们会经常起床,四处走走,花时间做一些轻松的活动,比如再拿一杯咖啡)”、“The final group, which the researchers named “the movers,” exercised about an hour most days, while also moving lightly for about two hours more.(最后一组被研究人员称为“运动者”,他们每天锻炼大约一个小时,同时还会多运动大约两个小时)”以及第四段“When the researchers cross-checked these groups against people’s current health data, the first group had the worst indices. On the contrary, the other groups were all better off and to about the same extent, with relatively improved blood sugar control and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels and about 8 percent less body fat than the first group.(当研究人员将这些群体与人们目前的健康数据进行交叉检查时,第一组的指数最差。相反,其他组的情况都有所改善,而且程度大致相同,血糖控制和胆固醇水平都相对改善,体脂比第一组减少了8%左右)”可知,第二组的健康指数像“运动者”一样得到类似的改善。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But, in between, they rose often and took walks around, spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee.(但是,在这段时间里,他们经常站起来四处散步,花时间做一些轻松的活动,比如再拿一杯咖啡)”以及第五段“In addition to a brisk workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.(除了轻快的锻炼外,我们还需要经常轻轻地移动,打扫卫生、走楼梯、在大厅里散步,或者只是不要静止不动)”可推知,作者建议做一些轻松的活动,比如拿咖啡、打扫卫生、爬楼梯、散步,在体育场里散步属于轻松的运动。
根据最后一段“A single 30-minute, daily workout ‘might not be enough’ to reduce the downsides of long time sitting(每天一次30分钟的锻炼“可能不足以”减少长时间坐着的负面影响)”以及“In addition to a brisk workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.(除了轻快的锻炼外,我们还需要经常轻轻地移动,打扫卫生、走楼梯、在大厅里散步,或者只是不要静止不动)”可知,作者认为每天只运动三十分钟不足以降低久坐的负面影响,因此建议人们经常性轻微运动。 故选A。
If you’re looking for something fun to do, pack a picnic dinner and take your family or friends to a beautiful place to eat. However, there’s a wrong trend—viewing picnics as an excuse to transport food in single-use plastic containers. Sure, it means the clean-up is easy at the moment, but it just puts it off to a later point, when it takes the form of the volunteer clean-up and landfill management. ____16____ What follows is advice on how to pack such a picnic.
●Use food containers wisely
Using reusable containers is the easiest way to reduce waste. ____17____ For example, to reduce packaging, you can take along things like a loaf of bread, a whole watermelon, whole vegetables, a knife and a board to cut your food when you’re ready to eat. These things don’t have to be done and sealed before you leave the house.
●____18____
Using washable dishes for a picnic does not require much more work than single-use ones. You’d have to carry the waste out anyway in a trash bag, so why not pack your dirty plates into a bag and put them in the dishwasher at home If you’re worried about breaking, take some solid camping plates.
●Think about the drinks
Forget the single-use, single-serve drink bottles. ____19____ Fill personal water bottles with water, juice or lemonade at pared with a single-use plastic cup, they have the added advantage of keeping your drinks cold for longer.
●Put cloth bags to good use
Cloth bags are amazing. I use them for so much more than just buying food at the store. They’re perfect for packing sandwiches, dried or fresh fruit, and other snack foods. You can use them to pack glasses or plates to prevent breaking. They can also work as a napkin, tea towel, or garbage bag if needed. ____20____
A. Clean up the waste
B. Avoid plastic plates
C Be sure to add a few to your picnic basket.
D. There are some healthy dishes you can make or buy.
E. To prevent this, a plastic-free picnic can be a brilliant idea.
F. These create a huge amount of waste, which can be easily avoided.
G. In addition, keep in mind that you don’t have to pre-pack everything.
E 17. G 18. B 19. F 20. C
上文“Sure, it means the cleanup is easy at the moment, but it just puts it off to a later point, when it takes the form of volunteer cleanups and landfill management.(当然,这意味着目前清理工作很容易,但这只是把它推迟到以后,那时候它表现为志愿清理和垃圾填埋场管理的形式。)”讲述这些一次性塑料容器最终被志愿者清理或者进入垃圾填埋场,下文“What follows is advice on how to pack such a picnic.( 以下是关于如何打包这样的野餐的建议。)”
上文“Using reusable containers is the easiest way to reduce waste.(使用可重复使用的容器是减少浪费最简单的方法。)”讲述使用可重复的容器可以减少浪费,下文“For example, to reduce packaging, you can take along things like a loaf of bread(例如,为了减少包装,你可以随身携带一包面包之类的东西……)”
下文“Using washable dishes for a picnic does not require much more work than single-use ones.(在野餐时使用可洗的盘子并不需要比一次性使用的盘子做更多的工作。)”
说明不要使用一次性饮料瓶,下文“Fill a large thermos (保温瓶) or personal water bottles with water, juice or lemonade at pared with a single-use plastic cup, they have the added advantage of keeping your drinks colder for longer.(在家里把一个大保温瓶或个人水瓶装满水、果汁或柠檬水。与一次性塑料杯相比,它们还有一个额外的优势,可以让你的饮料保持更长时间的低温。)”建议使用大保温瓶和水瓶装饮料,F项中的“These create a huge amount of waste”是上文使用一次性饮料瓶的结果,下文的建议是对避免这种浪费的做法,因此推断F项“这些都造成大量的浪费,这是很容易避免的。”符合语境,承上启下,these指代上文提到的drink bottles。故选F。
【20题详解】
上文“They’re perfect for packing sandwiches, dried or whole fruit, and other snack foods. You can use them to pack glasses or plates to prevent breaking. They can also work as a napkin, tea towel, or trash bag if needed.( 它们非常适合包装三明治、干果或水果以及其他零食。你可以用它们来包装杯子或盘子,以防止破碎。如果需要的话,它们也可以用作餐巾、茶巾或垃圾袋。)”讲述了使用布袋的益处,因此推断携带几个布袋是必要的,C项“一定要在你的野餐篮子里加几个。”符合语境。故选C。

A girl went to her mother and complained that the senior high school life was so hard for her. Every day she studied very hard and often stayed up late doing homework, but the result was beyond satisfaction. She often felt lonely without anyone to talk with at school. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the water came to the boil. She placed carrots into the first pot. Then she placed eggs into the second pot. Finally, she placed ground coffee beans into the last pot. She let them boil without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes, she turned off the burners. She took the carrots, the eggs and the coffee out with a scoop and placed each of them in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, the mother asked, “Tell me, what do you see ” “Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” the girl replied. The mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked her to drink the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted it.
The daughter then asked, “What does it mean, Mom ” Her mother explained that these objects had faced the same adversity—boiling water, but they reacted differently. The carrots had been hard. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, they softened and became weak. The eggs had been weak. Their thin outer shells had protected their liquid interior(内部). But after sitting through the boiling water, their inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water. “Which are you ” the mother asked her daughter.

Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37 500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries.

9 Which can best replace the underlined word “contaminates” in Paragraph 2
A. Pollutes. B. Heats. C. Attacks. D. Reduces.

C. Be sure to add a few to your picnic basket.
D. There are some healthy dishes you can make or buy.
E. To prevent this, a plastic-free picnic can be a brilliant idea.
F. These create a huge amount of waste, which can be easily avoided.
G. In addition, keep in mind that you don’t have to pre-pack everything.
