Nilas Corneliussen is the Swedish-born head chef of a Nordic-Asian combination restaurant in Thailand’s capital.
While Thailand had long appealed to him, even in his youth, Corneliussen said he never imagined a career in cooking. Instead, he was drawn to Muay Thai, or Thai boxing. During high school breaks, he even traveled alone to Thailand to join Muay Thai training camps. During those trips, he fell in love with the country. After suffering a hand injury while boxing, he was forced to move on from Muay Thai. However, he didn’t stop thinking about Thailand.
The very day after graduating from high school in Sweden, Corneliussen booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok and applied for a study visa. It wasn’t until halfway through his studies, from 2010 to 2014, that he was invited to the birthday party of a fellow student and friend, whose parents ran local Thai restaurants. The atmosphere inside the kitchen attracted him—everyone had to come together to make it happen.
At the time, Corneliussen didn’t think he could run after his new enthusiasm for cooking in Thailand. Instead, he thought it would be best to go back to his roots and understand the flavors he’d grown up with before cooking anything, so he finished his studies and moved back to Europe. It’s a view he doesn’t agree with today. He thinks now that no cooking style is more important than another.
Starting out in a Stockholm restaurant, he honed his skills and finally won the silver in the world’s most famous international cooking competition as part of the Swedish team. Despite the success, he returned to Thailand with his love for cooking arts in 2022.
“In Thailand, I get this feeling of belonging and connection to the people, food and culture,” he says, recalling his first days as a foreigner in the Thailand.
4. What inspired Corneliussen to become a cook
A. The team work in the kitchen. B. Delicious and unique Thai meals.
C Recommendation of a Thai friend. D. The inconvenient life in Bangkok.
5. What does the underlined word “honed” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Shared. B. Improved. C. Recovered. D. Assessed.
6. What can be learned about Corneliussen according to the text
A. He showed great interest in cooking when young.
B. He was injured when cooking for the first time.
C. He considers all cooking styles are of equal importance.
D. He thinks his returning to Europe quite a wise decision.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. A Swedish-born head chef in Thailand. B. A Swedish child’s love for Thailand.
C. Different cooking styles in the world. D. A Nordic-Asian combination restaurant.
C
The winner of the Natural History Museum of London’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award is Nima Sarikhani, for her image of a polar bear sleeping on sea ice, which is called “Ice Bed”. It was taken in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago.
Sarikhani spent three days looking for polar bears but without success as they were trapped in a thick fog. But then, as the ship came across some sea ice, she saw two polar bears. She and her team tracked them for eight hours. And under the light of the midnight sun, the bear clawed out a bed on a small iceberg before sleeping.
The photograph inspires strong emotions in all its viewers. While climate change is the biggest challenge for humans, the photograph also inspires hope that there is still time to fix the mess we have caused.
Polar bears are known to dig themselves spots to sleep in, which are sometimes referred to as “day bed”. They’re also known to take one-to two-hour-long sleeps, especially after a good meal.
According to the museum, the area where the polar bear was taken on film is among the most isolated (孤立) in the world, and holds a population of 19 polar bears that rely on the sea ice to travel and hunt offshore. But air temperatures in Svalbard have increased by 3℃ to 5℃over the past 40 to 50 years, which has resulted in heavy winter rainfall and some areas being ice-free most of the year. While the bears that follow sea ice may still be able to hunt year-round, this is increasingly over deeper waters, which may be less productive.
Less sea ice for polar bears to use as a way to safely travel has also led to the animals having less genetic (基因的) diversity. There aren’t as many opportunities for different groups to mix. This is leading to increased inbreeding among local bears.
At present, Svalbard’s polar bear population is still considered to be stable, but as global temperatures continue to increase, that may not be the case for long.
8. What made it difficult for Sarikhani to spot polar bears in the beginning
A. The outdated equipment. B. The terrible weather.
C. The lack of support. D. The tight schedule.
9. What poses a risk to polar bears in Svalbard
A. The loss of sea ice. B. The extremely low temperature.
C. The isolated position. D. The increase in genetic diversity.
10. What is the author’s attitude to the future of Svalbard’s polar bears
A. Uncaring. B. Worried. C. Unclear. D. Optimistic.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Norway’s Svalbard Archipelago B. The Biggest Challenge for Polar Bears
C. An Award-Winning Photo “Ice Bed” D. The Reduction in Polar Bear Population
D
It is thought that music can make maths more enjoyable, keep students concentrating and help ease fear or anxiety they have about maths. Techniques for integrating music into maths lessons range from clapping to pieces with different rhythms when learning numbers and fractions (分数) to using maths to design musical instruments.
Research done before has shown that children who are better at music also do better in maths. But whether teaching music to youngsters actually improves their maths has been less clear. Researchers searched for studies on the topic published between 1975 and 2022 and then combined the results of 55 studies from around the world to come up with an answer.
According to the researchers, there are three types of musical interventions: standardized musical interventions (children sing, listen to and compose music), instrumental musical interventions (children learn how to play instruments), and music-maths integrated interventions.
Students took maths tests before and after taking part in the intervention and the change in their scores was compared with that of youngsters who didn’t take part in any intervention. The use of music, whether in separate lessons or as part of maths classes, was related to greater improvement in maths over time. Around 73% of students who had integrated lessons, 69% of students who learned how to play instruments and 58% of students who had normal music lessons do significantly better than youngsters who didn’t have any type of musical intervention.
The results also show that music helps more with learning arithmetic (算术) than other types of maths and has a bigger effect on younger pupils and those learning more basic mathematical concepts. Some experts point out that maths and music have much in common, such as the use of some symbols. Both subjects also require abstract thought and quantitative reasoning. Arithmetic may lend itself particularly well to being taught through music because key concepts, such as fractions and ratios, are also basic to music. However, there are still many things that need improvement about the study.
12. How did the researchers make the new findings
A. By experimenting with different musical instruments.
B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By organizing maths tests regularly.
D. By conducting surveys on the Internet.
13. Which aspect of the study does paragraph 4 mainly focus on
A. Its principle. B. Its process. C. Its background. D. Its result.
14. Which of the following benefits students most in learning maths
A. Providing music-maths integrated classes.
B. Teaching students to play musical instruments.
C. Permitting students to compose music to their taste.
D. Allowing students to listen to their favorite songs after class.
15. What might the author continue talking about
A. The practical uses of the findings. B. The difficulty in combining music and maths.
C. The similarities between maths and music. D. The specific limitation of the study.

My writing journey began when I was a little girl of four. I wrote a story about a native American girl named White Lily as she and her family prepared to travel to their winter camping grounds. From that one-page short story, I continued writing as I grew older, filling notebook after notebook with tales of fantastic kingdoms, thrilling journeys to the stars, and tales of noble heroes who faced deadly groups of enemies. But sometimes, inspiration would fail me—I’d find myself staring at an empty page, and the words wouldn’t come no matter how hard I tried.
Being home educated, my awesome teacher was my mom. She gave me the freedom to explore different forms of writing and practice my skills. And when I hit a brick wall one day, I asked her how on earth to overcome the terrible curse (诅咒) of writer’s block.
She had a unique way. “You just need to write a stump (树桩) story!” she declared. “That’s what to do when you get stumped.”
“What should it be about ” I asked her, my eyes wide.
“Why, a STUMP, of course!”
I was puzzled. Why on earth would writing a story about an actual stump help me work out which heroic adventure I should write about next I stormed out of the room, and grabbed my notebook. Pencil in hand, I was angry as I stared at that teasing, empty page. Rolling my eyes, I eventually gave in. “At least this is easier than writing a long and complex ad venture story,” I thought to myself. And I wrote a very short story about an actual stump in the forest.
After writing that boring but inspiring story, I felt better. I had a much clearer idea of what to write. So I began to write a story about a brave prince and his little sister who got into trouble more often than not.
注意:1. 写作词数应为150个左右;
I kept writing on the wonderful afternoon.

Nilas Corneliussen is the Swedish-born head chef of a Nordic-Asian combination restaurant in Thailand’s capital.
While Thailand had long appealed to him even in his youth, Corneliussen said he never imagined a career in cooking.
C. Recommendation of a Thai friend.

故填are associated。
故填is。

此处考查固定句型it occurred to sb. that... 故填it。
故填which。
function as sth.“起……作用; 具有……功能”。故填as。
故填and。

注意:1. 写作词数应为150个左右;
I kept writing on the wonderful afternoon.

This experience has taught me a valuable lesson.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I kept writing on the wonderful afternoon. I finished my story when the sunlight was turning golden and streamed through my windows. I got up and showed my “stump story” as well as the prince story to Mom and forcedly admitted that it had helped a lot. Mom explained that sometimes all that I needed to do was something boring but inspiring. I agreed with her because it helped me see that writing about my hero is a lot more fun than writing about that dumb old stump!
This experience has taught me a valuable lesson. Writing doesn’t always have to start with a grand idea or a burst of inspiration. Sometimes, it’s about showing up at the blank page and believing that the act of putting pen to paper will guide you to where you need to go. From that day forward, whenever writer’s block threatens to stall my creative flow, I’ll remember the stump story. It has become a reminder that inspiration isn’t always waiting to strike like lightning. Sometimes, it’s cultivated through the simple act of persisting, even if that means writing about something as ordinary as a tree stump in the woods. And in those moments of perseverance some of the most extraordinary stories are born.
