Which of these ingredients have you cooked with or eaten, wild rice, rabbits or roses Actually, they were part of Native American cuisine in the past. Sean Sherman is a chef from the Oglala Lakota tribe, who is attempting something remarkable. Through his company and his restaurant, Sherman is bringing these ingredients back into the public eye.
Sean Sherman grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation. As a reservation kid, Sherman usually didn’t have access to high-quality or tasty food. His family relied on the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which meant canned goods, tasteless food, and powdered milk. After high school, Sherman started working for the Forest Service. As part of his job, he had to learn the names of the plants, which raised his curiosity about indigenous (本土的) plants and foods.
Sherman started doing lots of research on his own, and he started his company in 2014. A few years later, Sherman opened his restaurant Owamni, where he showed native ingredients and flavors. The most significant feature of the restaurant is the native ingredients, none of which is related to European civilizations.
The vibe in the restaurant is totally unique as well. There, a lot of people are really struck by it, because it’s not typical to be able to go someplace and see their native foods on the menu, see native people cooking the food and listen to native music. Therefore, it’s a wholly unique experience and it’s something that’s really special.
Native cuisine allows native people to explore their histories and cultures. It supports local businesses and comes with a host of health benefits. “We should have native restaurants in every city to show the diversity and flavors of all the different tribes across North America and thus have a future where native cuisine is more widespread, and ingredients are more familiar and well known,” Sherman explains.
24.When did Sean Sherman become interested in native foods
A.As he was a reservation kid.
B.Before he entered high school.
C.When he worked as a chef in a restaurant.
D.When he was working in the forest department.
25.What is the most important feature of Sherman’s restaurant
A.The ingredients used are native.
B.Native music is played all the time.
C.Diverse ingredients are combined in each dish.
D.It is a reflection of modern native civilization.
26.What does the underlined word “vibe” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Service. B.Decoration. C.Scenery. D.Atmosphere.
27.Why does Sherman suggest each city should have native restaurants
A.To boost the profits of local businesses.
B.To help native people to honor their history.
C.To present and promote the native cuisine.
D.To serve foods with various health benefits.

Wall Street bankers, investors and economists have for months argued over whether a US recession (衰退) is coming. But for some Americans, the unforgiving economic pain typical during recession has already set in.
Al Brown and his wife faced a tough call in May when reviewing their weekly budget: what’s a higher priority, more food or dish soap Based in Concord, North Carolina, Brown was the main breadwinner for his wife and their two children. Then in April, he was let go from his job as a global director of business development at software company Cascade. He’s since quit his gym membership and sold various items around his home, including a computer and yard furniture. His 13-year-old son quit the basketball team.
Brown, 37, now spends his days searching the internet for jobs or reaching out to potential connections. After filing over 600 applications, only a handful have produced interviews. That’s a far cry from the labor-market strength described in government figures.
Investors and economists have been expecting a recession since last year as the Fed raised interest rates to control inflation (通货膨胀). That caused companies to focus on profitability over growth, which meant cutting spending and reducing their workforces.
“I think it’s unlikely that I will get another good paying job with great benefits like the one I had,” McCollum, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio, said. More Americans are likely to encounter similar cases, some experts predict.
“As we go through this year, and into next year, there is still going to be this focus on trying to reduce costs, and it is going to result in more unemployment,” said Thomas Simons, a senior economist at Jefferies. “The impact of layoffs, currently concentrated among white-collar workers, will last throughout the economy through a ‘big pullback in overall spending’,” Simons said. “Consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic output, so if more Americans are forced to cut back because they were laid off, that might throw the US economy into a recession.”
28.What are some Americans currently going through
A.They can’t afford necessities of life. B.They’ve lost interest in high-end gyms.
C.They are badly treated by their bosses. D.They have difficulty making ends meet.
29.What does the author want to demonstrate through Brown’s job hunting
A.One should try various ways to find a job.
B.American labor market is not that friendly to job-seekers.
C.Few companies are interested in middle-aged job-hunters.
D.The government provides accurate figures of the job market.
30.How do companies deal with the economic struggles
A.By employing more workers. B.By changing interest rates.
C.By giving priority to profits. D.By cutting employees’ allowances.
31.Which statement will Thomas Simons probably agree with
A.Laid-off workers tend to go into debt.
B.Lower consumption may worsen the current situation.
C.Americans will spend more to increase economic output.
D.Companies are to blame for the unemployment of white-collar workers.
D
When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms (症状). Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free. A study estimated that every year, over 26,000 people went to the emergency room for adverse (有害的) events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interaction can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects. Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复). Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients, including pain relievers, nasal decongestants and cough suppressants or expectorants. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups-including older adults, children and pregnant women-may be at greater risk.
Older people who are using prescribed (处方的) drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicine to children under age 4. Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.
32.Why did the author mention the study in paragraph 1
A.To stress the easy access to OTC medicines.
B.To explain the dangers of using OTC medicines.
C.To emphasize the importance of OTC medicines.
D.To prove the potential risks of using OTC medicines.
33.What advice does the author give to those who take different drugs at the same time
A.Turn to doctors for advice. B.Buy medicines from physicians.
C.Take only one drug instead. D.Change the ingredients of drugs.
34.What can we infer from the text
A.Women cannot face aging positively.
B.Children are more easily affected by diseases.
C.Older people’s body cannot deal with medicines easily.
D.People’s desire for health makes them take more medicine.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.OTC medicines may not be safe.
B.Tips for taking over-the-counter drugs.
C.How to deal with an OTC drug overdose
D.Should medicines be available “over the counter”

Tips for you to overcome comparison
Identify your triggers (诱因) and avoid them. To stop comparing yourself to others, pay attention to the people or events that cause your behavior. Do you feel discontent with your life after looking at luxury goods 36 Write down your comparative thoughts as soon as they happen so you can limit your exposure to these situations or avoid them altogether.
37 When you minimize your abilities, it becomes easier to compare yourself to others. To avoid this negative behavior, make a list of your strengths and talents. By acknowledging your best qualities, you can learn to love yourself.
Keep a gratitude journal. To start journaling, reflect on the little things that bring you joy and write down why you’re grateful for them. Keeping a gratitude journal can increase your chances of overcoming comparison, but you may forget about it if you have a busy schedule. 38
Work on improving your abilities. Instead of focusing on your “weaknesses”, reflect on the areas you can improve. 39 Besides, don’t be afraid to ask other people for help along the way. By prioritizing yourself, you can boost your self-confidence and find your place and value.
Appreciate others instead of envying them. 40 If you have friends who are highly achieving people, you might consider that their networks are full of people who might be able to help you become more successful in your life. Instead of envying their success, be supportive and use their success to your advantage.
A.Write down your positive qualities.
B.Do you set goals to achieve your dream
C.Consider the advantage that others can bring you.
D.Recognize everyone’s circumstances are entirely unique.

第二节(满分25分)
Crab Lessons
My son Geordi was a rather spirited boy. Very little held his attention for long. He spent most of his spare time thinking up new ways to scare me half to death. Like the time he decided to “surf” on a tiny plastic table that was meant to hold a few drinks rather than a six-year-old boy. Geordi had just begun learning about the ocean in school and was surprisingly fascinated by it. We lived in Delaware, so any discussion about the ocean usually included horseshoe crabs, which crowded our coasts to mate in the late spring.
As part of the lesson, Geordi’s teacher brought horseshoe crab shells (壳) to school for the children to touch and examine. Hearing that horseshoe crabs had been around for over 300 million years, even before the dinosaurs, Geordi thought that was officially the coolest thing he had ever heard. He could not stop talking about it for days, and I decided it was time for us to take a drive to the Delaware Bay.
As we stepped out from the car, strong wind nearly blew my poor forty-five-pound child to the ground. Being a six-year-old mischievous (调皮的) boy, Geordi saw this as an opportunity to showcase his amazing talents, which included falling down, getting up, falling down and, yes, getting up again. This, of course, was always complete with giggles (咯咯笑). The drama came to a sudden stop as Geordi spied the dozens of army-truck-looking creatures in the sand. The next sound effect was “Wow!” as his body froze and his eyes widened with wonder.
Geordi ran around excitedly, not knowing which one to check out first. He settled on a horseshoe crab that was on its back, legs waving wildly in the air, desperate for water. “Mom, look at this one!” he screamed. “He’s cool!” I pointed out the different body parts of the crab for him, and he listened quietly and absorbed the information. He said, “I really liked him. I think I will name him Spike because he had all those really cool, spiky (尖的) things on his back.” Then I picked up the crab, turned it over to its proper position and placed it at the edge of the water.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Geordi asked what I was doing.

Geordi asked what I was doing. I explained to him that if the crab got stuck on its back and could not get back to the water soon, it would die. Horseshoe crabs, I told him, are very important in many ways. Their eggs are a great food source for birds, and their shells and blood have special medical properties that can help many people. Besides, it didn’t seem right to let a species that had survived so long just dry up in the sun. Geordi listened intently, his eyes sparkling with concern. He then bent down and cautiously touched Spike’s shell with his finger, murmuring, “Go home, Spike.” We watched the horseshoe crab slowly make his way back into the ocean.
Geordi spotted many more horseshoe crabs on their backs. He decided that we should help them all. Without fear or hesitation, he began picking up stuck horseshoe crabs and turning them over, and helped me carry them to the water. He was extra careful and gentle, worried that he may hurt one. His sincere concern for the horseshoe crabs touched my heart. When the job was done and it was time to leave, Geordi asked, “Do you think we will ever see Spike again ” “Maybe,” I said, “but now that we have helped him, we know he will be okay even if we don’t see him again.”
