In the corner of my desk is a note, which is slowly turning yellow from time. It is a card from my mother, with only four sentences, but with enough influence to 16 my life forever.
In it, she praises my abilities as a writer. Each sentence is full of 17 . The word “but” never appears on the card; however, the word “and” is there many times.
Every time I read it, I am 18 to ask myself how many times I’ve said “but” to my own daughters. Although our eldest daughter usually got all “A”s on her report card, teachers would always suggest that she 19 too much in class. I always forgot to ask them if she was improving. 20 I would greet her with, “Congratulations! Your Dad and I are very proud, but could you try to talk less in class ”
The same was 21 of our younger daughter. Like her sister, she is a lovely and bright child. She also thinks of the floor of her room as a closet (壁橱) which has often caused me to say, “Yes, that project is great, but 22 up your room!”
I’ve noticed that other parents do the same thing. “The hockey team won but Mike should have made that last goal.” “Amy’s the homecoming queen, but now she wants $200 to buy a new dress and shoes.” But, but, but. What I 23 from my mother is to start thinking “and, and, and” instead. For example, “The hockey team won, and Mike did his best the whole game.” “Amy’s the homecoming queen, and she’s going to look perfect!”
The fact is that “but” feels bad, “and” feels good. When our children feel 24 about what they are doing, they do more of it.
This is not to say that children don’t need their parents’ wishes. They do and they will. When those wishes are positive, amazing things happen.
It’s not 25 just to say we love our children. We’re also going to have to start guiding and taking part
in what is right with our children.
“No more buts!” is a call for joy. And if I ever forget, I have my mother’s note to remind me.
16.A.prepare B.destroy C.change D.devote

It was a hot day in early September. “Write about summer vacation,” Mrs. Peabody gave the class a writing assignment. She was a strict, older woman. “Be as creative as you can. But,” Mrs. Peabody added, as she always did, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim didn’t want to write a stupid essay about his summer vacation. So he gave up on the assignment and wrote what he wanted to. Not an essay at all but a short story. Science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 four hours a day.
The next morning he handed in the story but soon he felt regretful. He even couldn’t sleep well. In English class, he saw the way Mrs. Peabody looked at him with a strange look in her strict, psychic eyes for long. I’m in
trouble, Jim thought, staring at the floor.
Mrs. Peabody said, “Almost everyone in class wrote an essay about his or her summer vacation... Almost everyone.”
This’s bad, Jim thought. I’m getting an F, I know it.
“But,” the teacher continued, “one student decided he didn’t feel like doing that.”
This’s worse than an F... I’m in note-to-the-parents territory now.
“All of your essays read as if they were written in your sleep. Just one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin is the only one who got an A on the assignment. Now I’m going to ask him to come up here and read his story to you as an example of thinking independently and being creative.” Then, being Mrs. Peabody, she added strictly, “though he should have a little more attention to proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim walked to the front of the classroom, as if he were climbing to the top of Mount Everest or were the first person to step onto the surface of Mars.
What a small thing really, he now reflected as he dodged through the crowded hallway, just a single assignment. But what a difference that moment had made to him.

A.Because he felt tired out after writing for a whole day.
B.Because he thought the story he wrote was interesting.

B.Mrs. Peabody enjoyed giving her students surprises.

my feelings but also has a unique personal style and warmth. Besides, I often spend time with my parents, whether it’s having a meal together, taking a walk, or watching TV. I believe that companionship is the most enduring confession of love. By listening to their daily lives and sharing, I can better understand their feelings and needs, thereby providing them with more support and love.
Nowadays, many of my friends choose technology to show their love. I am open to the idea of using computer technology to create gifts. With the advancement of technology, it has become more convenient and diverse to make gifts using computer technology. For example, I can create an electronic photo album to collect the beautiful memories of our family, or design a personalized video to express my gratitude and love for my parents.
