Due to the fact that the average life expectancy in Ghana is 64 years old, and the most common causes of death are largely treatable conditions, such as malaria, stroke, and respiratory infections. Boateng, growing up in a small village in southern Ghana/struggling to access basic health care, felt an urgent call to help and decided he would make it his life’s mission to bring health care to remote communities in Ghana.
Boateng worked hard in school, getting a scholarship to study biology at Cornell University in the US, and ultimately earned his master’s in Healthcare Administration. Later he started his nonprofit, OKB Hope Foundation, and converted a van into a mobile doctor’s office called the Hope Health Van to bring health care directly to those in need in 2021.
A few times a week, the mobile clinic and medical team travel long distances to remote communities in Ghana and provide free routine medical care. On each trip, Boateng’s team consists of a nurse, a physician’s assistant, a doctor, and an operation assistant. In the van, they can run basic labs like bloodwork and urinalysis as well as prescribe and provide medications. “It’s like a one-stop shop for people,” said Boateng, adding that most of the people they see have one health issue or another.
Since its launch, Boateng says the Hope Health Van has served more than 4, 000 Ghanaians across more than 45 rural communities who otherwise don’t have easily accessible medical care. To supplement the mobile clinic, Boateng’s organization has also trained 20 volunteers to serve as local health advocates. They check people’s vitals and provide the medical team with timely data for assessing how to move forward with care and treatment, especially for those whose health is at risk.
In the future, Boateng hopes to expand to provide more consistent and high-quality medical care not only to those living in remote areas of Ghana but in other countries as well. “I believe that our model can be replicated in sub-Saharan Africa,” he said.

Right now someone is speaking or thinking in a language that is on the verge of disappearing. Of the world’s roughly 7,000 spoken languages, one dies every 40 days, according to one estimate—languages like Babanki, spoken in Cameroon.
And some of the places where rare languages are the most concentrated are also most vulnerable (易受影响的) to climate change. Especially, linguists call global warming the final nail in the coffin (致命一击) for more than half of humanity’s language disappearing.
Let’s take Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation, for example. It’s very small, but it has 110 languages spoken there, which is the highest density (密度) of languages in the world. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise and climate change. There, you can often see perfect hurricanes.
So if rising seas or storms force people in Vanuatu to move to Australia, what happens to the language they speak Well, what often happens is that they aren’t necessarily displaced with the same people in their community, and also, even if they are displaced with other people in their community, they and their children will often adopt the language of Australia, the dominant language there because it’s economically advantageous for them to speak the new language, the dominant language. And their language dies.
However, there is so much culturally lost when a language dies. It is because the language carries so much local knowledge and culture.
In fact, in the 1970s, it was something like 2,000 native speakers of Hawaiian remained. But activists launched some schools where children are taught from birth, usually by kind of grandparents, and now more than 18,700 people speak it. And the same thing happened in New Zealand in the 1970s. Only 5% of young Maori people spoke the language, but now something like 25% now speak it.
28.What do we know about Vanuatu
A.Its most languages have died out.
B.It is sensitive to climate change.
C.It witnesses various disasters every year.
D.It is the highest density of population in the world.
29.What will happen to people who are forced to leave Vanuatu for Australia
A.They lose their advantages in economy.
B.They have few chances to speak their own language.
C.They fail to contact people in their previous community.
D.They willingly teach their kids the language of Australia.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards language disappearing
A.Favourable. B.Concerned. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
31.What does the last paragraph want to convey
A.More languages are faced with dying out.
B.It’s a must for kids to learn their mother tongue.
C.Grandparents play a vital role in passing down languages.
D.More efforts have been made to save endangered languages.
D
Scientists have proved the idea wrong that women are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries because of biological differences which affect their math skills. Girls and boys have similar brains and are equally able when it comes to understanding math, according to the study.
The research involved 104 children aged between 3 to 10 years old, 55 of whom were girls. The kids watched an educational video featuring math concepts such as counting and addition, while the scientists recorded their brain activity using an MRI scanner. The team then compared all the scan results. According to the data, there was no difference between the children’s brain functions or development. And the boys and girls appeared to be equally tuned into the videos. The team also looked at the results of a math ability test taken by 97 children aged between 3 and 8 years old, 50 of whom were girls. Both genders performed equally well, regardless of age.
Between 2015 and 2016, women made up only 35.5 percent of STEM students in the US, 32.6 percent of masters courses, and 33.7 percent at PhD level. Jessica Cantlon, professor of developmental neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University and senior author of the paper, commented in a statement: “Science doesn’t align with folk beliefs. We see that children’s brains function similarly regardless of their gender so hopefully we can redefine expectations of what children can achieve in mathematics.”
Cantlon said: “Typical socialization can enlarge small differences between boys and girls that can snowball into how we treat them in science and math. We need to be aware of these origins to ensure we aren’t the ones causing the gender unfairness.”
Alyssa Kersey, postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago and first author on the paper, said in a statement: “I’s not just that boys and girls are using the math network in the same ways but that similarities are evident across the entire brain. This is an important reminder that humans are more similar to each other than we are different.”
32.How did the researchers know of the children’s brain functions
A.By using an MRI scanner. B.By asking them questions.
C.By testing their experiment abilities. D.By recording an educational video.
33.What does the underlined phrase “align with” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Vary with. B.Deal with. C.Fight with. D.Agree with.
34.What causes the gender gap in STEM field according to Cantlon
A.The different interests. B.The gender unfairness.
C.The gender imbalance. D.The biological differences.
35.What does Alyssa Kersey think of the result of the study
A.Controversial. B.Significant. C.Unexpected. D.Absurd.

She was the prettiest puppy we had ever seen, and the whole family immediately fell in love with her. We named her Onyx because of her black, shiny black coat. She spent her first vacation with us when she was only ten weeks old and had her first bath and swim in the St. Lawrence River. We had no clue that this amazing little ball of fur would end up being our hero.
As she grew older, Onyx became more and more involved in our family activities. On hot summer days, Onyx enjoyed floating on the river with us in her own rubber tube (橡皮圈). Amazingly standing on the top of the tube, she smiled while showing off her perfect balance. Resting her front legs and paws over the edge of the rubber tube, she kept her eyes shut as she floated until she’d had enough of the warm sun on her black coat.
One day, our eighteen-year-old daughter, Margie, announced she was going to swim across the bay. No one in the family was free to go swimming with her. The unwritten rules, regardless of swimming ability, was to have a companion in the water with you, especially when swimming the width of the bay. I was not a good swimmer, so I said to Margie, “Take Onyx with you.” Having heard her name, Onyx woke up from a nap and was ready for action. Margie signed the dog to follow her. Onyx ran to the water next to her. They entered the freezing river together and swam side by side across the bay.
I watched from the bank as they reached the sandbar (沙洲) on the far shore. They rested a few minutes before diving into the water for the return trip. I felt uneasy for some reason and continued to watch the pair swim side by side.
Suddenly I heard Margie calling out, “I have a cram (痉挛) in the leg! ”
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing the pair approaching the riverbank, I breathed a sigh of relief.

【原文】 W: Welcome to Student Life! Today we’re going to talk about setting up a project of student jobs in your school. Having students do different jobs around the school is a great way to prepare them for life in the real world. It encourage s them to be responsible and also helps them learn new tasks and gain experience. However, it’s important to get students excited about the project, so the first thing you should do is let students know this project. Get the headmaster to make an announcement explaining the project. OK Then decide on the jobs you want and write out the descriptions of the skills and responsibilities needed for each position. Some typical jobs are Classroom Assistants, Recycling Officers and Computer Assistants. Next, ask students to apply for the jobs. Students should be encouraged to write letters of application for the job they are interested in. This is a great way to practice letter writing skills! And don’t forget you should make sure that students are guided by a teacher so that they take their responsibilities seriously. A committee then reviews all the applications and gives jobs to the most suitable applicants. Finally, it’s important to get opinions from the students about the project to find out which jobs are successful and which don’t go so well.

But much to my joy, with Margie tightly grabbing Onyx’s collar, our little furry friend began digging deep, slicing through the water with her paws and swimming fast towards the bank with every ounce of strength.
Seeing the pair approaching the riverbank, I breathed a sigh of relief. When they finally got to the shore, I reached out to help Margie, pulling her up onto the riverbank and wrapping her in a large towel. Exhausted but excited, Onyx eagerly ran to Margie and gently licked her face to make sure she was Okay, Everyone in the family was grateful for their safe return and Onyx was given an extra treat later in the afternoon for her quick and brave reaction. She became our hero that day and she never ceased to amaze us in the days that followed.
