Winter seems to drag on endlessly this time of year, so it’s only natural to start thinking about getting away, and the sunny south of France is calling your name!
Avignon
If you’re looking for history, then visit the town center of Avignon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you want to learn even more about this attractive town, then take a tour—it is often guided by a local expert. Hear the history first-hand and come away with a greater understanding as to how the town came to be.
Chateau
Nothing says French countryside more than a chatcau surrounded by acres of vineyards. There are wines to choose from. You can also explore the surrounding natural beauty on a horse ride, and they even run vineyard tours on horseback for a truly unique experience. Be sure to bring back a bottle or two of the Chateau des Bertrands wine so you can share a glass with friends as you tell them all about your trip.
Magnificent Marseille
The oldest city in France, starting out as an ancient Greek colony (殖民地), with its rich history, can keep every holidaymaker happy. A unique way to see as much as possible of what this great city has to offer is to book onto a segway tour. See the sights of the Museum Marseilles, Cathédrale La Major, and the historic Le Panier, while you walk around the streets.
Cannes
With amazing blue waters, fresh seafood, and mild winters, it’s an attractive destination to visit all year round. If you want a beach day, we’d recommend the Plage du Midi, easily accessible from the center of town. If you want to make the most of the Mediterranean Sea, don’t just look at it—sail on it!

When I was young, my mother was very much concerned for my happiness and was always there to support me. We had healthy boundaries (界限). When my own turn came for being a mother, I was determined to do so.
But as my daughter and I sat down to choose courses for the seventh grade, I felt the boundaries begin to fall. Students were allowed three electives (选修课) each term. Several of these were year-long courses—band, orchestra, yearbook and Spanish, and the rest were random (随机的)—technology education, drama, leadership and PE. I hated PE in my own school days.
We read the elective options carefully and a sense of relaxation washed over me. “You can sign up for band, yearbook and Spanish, and you won’t have to take PE ever,” I told her. I settled back into my chair, a weight taken off my chest. My daughter, however, frowned. “But I’m not sure I want to take Spanish. And I want to do the leadership class… and try drama!”
I cut in and offered her more practical advice. “You can’t pick the electives you want, though. They’re organized randomly. So you might get drama and leadership…, or you might get gym class or technology education. You might get the classes you want, and you might not. Is it worth risking having to take PE ” Finally, she chose to take the chance and signed up for band, yearbook and one period of the unknown elective. I reminded myself she was not me.
Watching your child walk into the trap of middle school is worse than experiencing it yourself. Motherhood, after all, is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. I am not going into the seventh grade again. It is my daughter’s turn. She is her own person, and while she is delicate and easily hurt, she is also stronger and more confident than I was.
( )4.What is the function of paragraph 1
A.To present a fact. B.To provide an example.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To make a comparison.
( )5.Why did the author feel relaxed after reading the elective options
A.Drama was her daughter’s favorite. B.Her daughter followed her advice.
C.There were many year-long courses. D.PE was optional for her daughter.
( )6.What did the author think of her daughter’s option
A.It seemed organized. B.It was uncertain.
C.It was made at random. D.It sounded reasonable.
( )7.What does the author want to say in the last paragraph
A.Motherhood is rewarding. B.Mothers should learn to let go.
C.Children should ask for help if necessary. D.Children are too young to make a decision.
C
It keeps what’s inside a mystery until you open it. There are usually toys in mystery boxes; but now, food has been added to the list.
Recently, the trend of “leftover mystery boxes” has become popular in many Chinese cities such as Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu. Stores pack boxes full of unsold food or food nearing its expiration date at low prices.
“We make the leftover mystery boxes available to buy at the end of the day,” Wu Tian, a staff member at a convenience chain store in Beijing, told China Daily. The food, such as milk, bread and sandwiches, is sold at about half the original price and is usually sold out quickly. Many bakeries have also joined the “mystery box club”.
Due to their low price, leftover mystery boxes “are very promising as a new business mode” and can attract more consumers, Hong Yong, an expert at the Ministry of Commerce, told China Daily. “In addition, they follow the concept of zero-waste and environmental protection.”
In 2021, the total amount of food waste in China reached 160 million tons, with an average of 93 grams per meal per person, China Food Newspaper reported. Since the passage of China’s Anti-Food Waste Law in April 2021, people’s awareness of food waste reduction has increased. Leftover mystery boxes can be an effective way for people to deal with food waste.
However, some people have raised food security concerns. If consumers buy a food mystery box for their breakfast the next morning, even if the food looks fine at the moment, it may have gone bad overnight. Moreover, food made in the store, such as bread, isn’t labeled with the production date in many cases, according to China Consumer News. If a consumer unpacks a mystery box and discovers that the food tastes bad or has already passed the last date, then it will be difficult for them to protect their rights, such as getting money back.
Only by considering both food safety and consumer rights can mystery blind boxes achieve a win-win situation for both buyers and sellers, commented China Youth Daily.
( )8.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “expiration” in paragraph 2
A.Purchasing. B.Producing. C.Ending. D.Selling.
( )9.What leads to the rise of the trend of “leftover mystery boxes”
A.It offers customers lower prices for those unsold food.
B.Stores make the leftover mystery boxes available at night.
C.People feel like such food as milk and bread more attractive.
D.It goes against the concept of zero-waste and environmental protection.
( )10.What is the author’s attitude towards the leftover mystery boxes
A.Supportive. B.Disapproving. C.Doubtful. D.Objective.
( )11.What can be the best title for the text
A.The Best Solution to Food Waste. B.Ways to Protect Consumers’ Rights.
C.Concerns about Leftover Mystery Boxes. D.The Rise of Leftover Mystery Boxes in China.
D
After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn texts into images. They do this by learning from a large amount of data from both texts and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an Al system called Stable Diffusion to recreate images directly based on people’s brain scans, Science magazine reported.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The AI then learned about the participants’ brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the fMRI data—when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activity with the photos. Through this method, the AI learned how human brains would react when seeing different photos. Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of objects.
If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry (模糊的) airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were “convincing” to about 80 percent accuracy, according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that combines texts and images to “decode the brain”. According to Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, in the future, the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive (感知) reality.
( )12.What is Stable Diffusion meant to do
A.Scan people’s brains. B.Turn texts into images.
C.Use brain scans to rebuild images. D.Record relevant experimental data.
( )13.How did the AI learn about the participants’ brain activities
A.By analyzing changes in blood flow. B.By asking the participants questions.
C.By comparing different brain scans. D.By referring to previous AI models.
( )14.What can we learn from the text
A.Dreams can hardly be forgotten by us. B.Texts and images help understand the brain.
C.People’s brains are strongly affected by fMRI. D.The AI creates clear images of object at first.
( )15.What does Ariel Goldstein say about the technology
A.It lacks convincing evidence. B.Its application has great potential.
C.It has been adopted in many countries. D.Its development is far from satisfactory.

Making lists is relaxing. It shows the shape of the immediate future; it calms you down and it makes you feel good when you cross something off. List-making is standard practice in treatment for 86 . It might even help you to get things done too. The more you have to do, the more you need a list and few people with high-powered jobs get by without them. Women always think they’re better at 87 than men. Men tend to have Tasks which they assemble into Action Plans while women just have lists of Things To Do.
James Oliver, psychologist, has created his own“time management matrix (矩阵)”. He writes a list of things to do and then organizes them into 88 ; things that have to be done 89 away; other things that it would be good to do today; things that are important but haven’t got to be done immediately and things that are less 90 , but that he doesn’t want to forget. “Using categories to order, the world is the way the human mind works,” he says. “After that, you should divide things into levels of importance.” But he also warns, “If people get too 91 in making lists, it doesn’t work. They have too many categories and lose their 92 to decide which is the most important.” It’s all a question of what works best for you, whether it’s a tidy notebook, a packet of Post-it notes or the back of your hand. Having tried all these, student Kate Rollins relies on a computerized list, which is printed out each morning. “My 93 organizer has changed my life,” she says. “Up to now, I’ve always relied on my good memory, but now that I’m working and studying, I find I’ve got too much to keep in my head.”
So what are you waiting for No, you are not too busy to make today the first day of your 94 time-managed life. In fact, there’s no better time than the present to begin to take increased 95 of your work and life. So, get out your pencil and pen and make a list.
