Weekend Visitor Engagement Volunteers—Museum of Zoology
Our wonderful team of Visitor Engagement Volunteers help us make the Museum a friendly, accessible and safe place to visit. We need extra help at weekends when we are at our busiest. This role will suit anyone who is keen to take on a public facing role. Knowledge of the Museum or the collections is not a necessity, but much enthusiasm and willingness to learn is all that is needed. We are looking for a minimum commitment of two shifts per month, which is approximately 7 hours in total.
Visitor Engagement Volunteers provide a friendly welcome and interact with visitors. They supply information about the exhibitions and displays, and answer questions from visitors or direct them to members of staff. You will be acting as the face of the Museum so we’d like you to welcome visitors and be aware of their needs.
Visitor Engagement Volunteers play a valuable role in maintaining museum security during opening hours by supervising visitors in the galleries, and supporting the front of house staff.

I was taught at a young age to be afraid rather than to experience life. Don’t ride a bike because you might get hit by a car. Don’t swim because you might drown. That’s why I was initially afraid to approach others. They might say no—how could I live with that rejection
A book changed me. Near the end of the book, the writer suggested trying out what I had just read but to pretend it was like the training game in a sport—when the games didn’t count. When my teams would lose formal games, I couldn’t bear to watch. But when they lost in the training game, I didn’t care.
I don’t know why the suggestion to pretend my attempts didn’t count could resonate with me. But I knew this new way of thinking worked for me. It gave me power to know the results didn’t matter because this was the exhibition game when I was practicing what I had learned before the real games started.
I discovered there were other ways to use this new tool. It allowed me to have a successful sales career, even though I heard the word “no” hundreds of times. It was part of the business, but I didn’t let it get me down. I turned a negative into a positive by reasoning that every time I heard the word “no”, it meant I was one step closer to “yes”. It’s amazing how powerful you feel when you remove the fear that stops you from going after what you want in life.
I still work my sales job, and we have a lot of high-school and college students working at the company. I will pass on the advice that I learned many years ago and encourage them to use that idea for whatever they want to achieve.
24.Which word can describe the author when he was young
A.Stubborn. B.Out-going. C.Confident. D.Dissociable.
25.Which statement is in line with the opinion of the book writer
A.The training games are also important. B.Whatever the game is, it doesn’t count.
C.Just have a try and downplay the results. D.Don’t worry about life’s gains and losses.
26.What does the underlined word “resonate” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Cope. B.Deal. C.Fight. D.Agree.
27.What does the author think of rejections in his work
A.Positive results. B.Steps to success.
C.Excuses to escape. D.Unbeatable strikes.
C
A successful move of 21 eastern black rhinos (犀牛) to a new home of a grassy plateau that hasn’t seen them in decades will give them space to live and help increase the population of the critically endangered animals. It was Kenya’s biggest rhino relocation ever.
The rhinos were taken from three parks that are becoming overcrowded to the private Loisaba Conservancy, where rhinos were wiped out by poaching (偷猎) decades ago.
The 18-day exercise involved tracking the rhinos using a helicopter and then shooting them with tranquilizer darts(麻醉飞镖). Then the animals—which weigh about a ton each—have to be loaded into the back of a truck for the move. Disaster nearly struck early in the relocation effort, when a tranquilized rhino fell into a river. Workers held the rhino’s head above water with a rope to stop it from drowning while the tranquilizer drug took effect, and then the rhino was freed.
Some of the rhinos were transferred from Nairobi National Park and made a 300-kilometer trip. Others came from two parks closer to Loisaba.
Rhinos are generally animals enjoying being alone and are at their happiest in large living areas. As numbers in the three parks where the rhinos were moved from have increased, wildlife officials decided to relocate some in the hope that they will be happier and more likely to increase. David Ndere, an expert on rhinos at the Kenya Wildlife Service, said their reproduction rates decrease when there are too many in a territory.
Kenya has had relative success in recovering its black rhino population, which dipped from around 20, 000 in the 1970s to below 300 in the mid-1980s because of hunting, according to conservationists, raising fears that the animals might be wiped out completely in the country. Kenya now has around 1, 000 black rhinos, the third biggest population behind South Africa and Namibia. There are just over 6, 400 wild black rhinos left in the world, all of them in Africa, according to the Save the Rhino organization.
28.What’s the reason why the rhinos were moved to a new home
A.Locals’ deadly effects. B.Their limited living space.
C.Their too large population. D.Their preference for a grassy plateau.
29.What can we infer about the rhinos’ move from Paragraph 3
A.Moving rhinos safely was a very serious challenge.
B.The method of transporting rhinos was too backward.
C.Many disasters happened during the rhino relocation.
D.Most rhinos in the three parks migrated on their own.
30.What does the Kenya government hope to achieve from the rhino’s move
A.A reintroduction of an endangered animal. B.A gradual increase of the rhino population.
C.A much larger national natural park in Kenya. D.A more booming tourism with rhino exhibitions.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.Ways to Move Rhinos Safely B.Black Rhinos’Situation in Kenya
C.Kenya’s Biggest Rhino Relocation D.The Black Rhino Reserves in Kenya

Getting third-party computer producers to add an AI button to laptops is the latest move by Microsoft to take most advantage of its close partnership with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and make itself a gateway for applications of generative AI technology.
Although most people now connect to the Internet—and many AI applications—by phone rather than computer, it’s a symbolic kickoff to what’s expected to be a competitive year as tech companies race to outdo each other in AI applications even as they haven’t yet settled all the moral and legal consequences. The New York Times last month charged both OpenAI and Microsoft that tools like ChatGPT and Copilot—formerly known as Bing Chat—are infringing (侵犯) on copyrighted news articles.
The keyboard redesign will be Microsoft’s biggest change to PC keyboards since it introduced a special Windows key in the 1990s. Microsoft’s four-squared logo design on it has evolved, but the key has been a fixture on Windows-oriented keyboards for about three decades.
The newest AI button is marked by the ribbon-like Copilot logo and is located near the space bar. On some computers it will replace the fight “CTRL” key, while on others it will replace a menu key.
Microsoft is not the only company with customized (订制的) keys. Apple pioneered the
concept in the 1980s with its “Command” key marked by a looped square design(it also sported an Apple logo for a time). Google has a search button on its Chromebooks and was first to experiment with an AI-specific key to launch its voice assistant on its now-discontinued Pixelbook.
But Microsoft has a much stronger hold on the broader PC market through its licensing agreements with third-party producers like Lenovo, Dell and HP. About 82% of all desktop computers, laptops and workstations run Windows, compared to 9%for Apple’s in-house operating system and just over 6% for Google’s.
Microsoft hasn’t yet said which computer-makers are installing the Copilot button beyond Microsoft’s own in-house line of high-end Surface equipment. It said some of the companies are expected to unveil (公布) their new models at next week’s CES gadget show in Las Vegas.
32.Why does Microsoft add an AI button to laptops
A.To improve the partnership with OpenAI.
B.To help third-party computer producers.
C.To establish its favorable position in AI applications.
D.To change people’s habit to connect to the Internet.
33.What can we infer about AI from Paragraph 2
A.People will connect to AI applications by PC.
B.The appearance of AI button leads to competition.
C.Competition in AI areas is fierce and unregulated.
D.The New York Times violated copyrighted news articles.
34.What kept changing in Microsoft keyboards over the past 30 years
A.The space bar. B.The Windows key.
C.The “Command” key. D.The “CTRL” key.
35.What is Microsoft’s advantage in changing keyboard keys
A.It can influence many more computer producers.
B.It is further ahead in AI application technology.
C.It has the patent for customized keyboard keys.
D.It controls the IT world with the CES gadget show.
Before I leave for college, there are 5 things that I want you to know:
I’m going to make mistakes. Making mistakes is just a part of shaping who we are, and just because I didn’t make some mistakes doesn’t mean I didn’t make others. It’s important to remember that my mistakes made me into the person I am today. 36
I’m going to change, based on who I’m friends with. I copied a lot of my friends in high school. It just means that a part of who I am is a part of who my friends are. 37 While I’ll still be me, I’ll be carrying my friends everywhere I go.
38 When I’m crying alone on a Sunday night because I miss home, you won’t get a Skype call from me in tears. I won’t call you not because I don’t want to talk to you, but because I need to learn how to handle life’s heartaches without my mom and dad.
I will mess up, but I will do my best to make it right. I’m probably not going to be all honor roll student. I might lose my room key and I’ll probably spend too much money on useless things. 39 But I will always try my hardest to measure up to the daughter you raised me to be.
I’ll be okay. 40 As a result, the idea of entering what seems like a whole new world terrifies me. Despite all of this, I’m determined to become the one who’s “most likely to succeed”. You’ve raised me to do great things, and now is when I’ll show you that I can.
A.That’s just how life works.
B.I’m going to let go of you.
C.You know that I’m not as strong as I seem.
D.You won’t have to struggle to understand me.
E.I’m going to evolve more and more as I get older.
F.I just want to warn you that I’m not a perfect daughter.
G.It won’t make me any better of a person in the future.

My husband had taken the car to see about a job and I stayed at the rest area with our six children. I kept them busy playing games and reading books. I prayed as hard as I could that my husband would get the job and this madness would all come to an end. When he came back and hard closed the car door, I knew the news was not good.
That night, one of the churches in Portland had a free dinner, so we hurried and had the children wash up in the bathrooms. We all loaded up in our run-down car. No one would get thrilled about a hot meal, but being homeless, we all knew what a treat this would be.
In the morning, we were all just as tired as when we went to bed. It’s not easy at all to sleep eight people in one car. It’s hard to stay warm with only the few blankets we had to share among us. We got in the car and left to make a garbage dump run.
As my husband looked for work every day, my children and I would walk around the city picking up cans and bottles to return for the deposit (押金). When nothing else worked, my husband and I would stand with a sign that read, “will work for food.” It was an embarrassment and we felt so ashamed. I never looked up at anyone, pretending that I was elsewhere and this was not happening. But we had to survive, and for the sake of our kids we would do whatever it took to get them food to eat.
Thanksgiving Day was drawing near and it was turning colder and colder. My husband had not found work and we were at a loss as how to gather up enough money for a house rent. It looked so hopeless.
On the evening before Thanksgiving, we went to the only church having Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless. Unluckily, our car broke down. My husband worked on it, but in vain.

根据第三段中“…it introduced a special Windows key in the 1990s. Microsoft’s four-squared logo design on it has evolved...”
根据第六段中“But Microsoft has a much stronger hold on the broader PC market through its licensing agreements with third-party producers like Lenovo, Dell and HP…”
根据“I need to learn how to handle life’s heartaches without my mom and dad.”
根据“As a result, the idea of entering what seems like a whole new world terrifies me.”
根据后文中“One side wasn’t shaped quite as 48 as the other. So we put this side around to the corner”可知,像大多数圣诞树一样,它也有好的“一面”,面朝着客厅。
根据前文中“I sat at the corner of the living room”可知,但如果你站在“我”“坐的地方”,你就会发现这棵树有它的秘密。
根据后文中“One side wasn’t shaped quite as 48 as the other. So we put this side around to the corner because non e wanted to see that 49 side.”
when引导定语从句,修饰 at the time。
it指代C919。
a handful of少量的。
One possible version:
Dear Mike,
I’ve noticed that you’ve been spending a lot of time collecting and reading comic books lately. Comics can indeed bring us endless joy and space for imagination, but they also take up a lot of your time.
Some comics may contain some undesirable contents that are not good for your mental health. Overindulgence in comics may affect your social relationships. Therefore, I suggest you try to strike a balance between hobbies and improving yourself by doing more meaningful activities. In addition, you can also try to develop some hobbies that benefit you like reading different kinds of books and doing sports, which can not only enrich your inner world but also improve your physical quality.
I think you may consider my advice. Hope my ideas will work.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
A truck driver just came over to help. My husband told him the battery was dead and the plugs were fouled and something about the radiator. The man informed us that we couldn’t get parts today, so it would have to wait till tomorrow. My husband swallowed his pride and said right now we couldn’t afford to fix it. He said that was okay and he’d be back at 10 a. m. tomorrow with the parts. That was what I called a Thanksgiving of miracles.
People stopped by with food and blankets as well as some clothes. We were grateful about that. A man talked to my husband about a job he had heard about. That next day the truck driver did come back and got our car running again. I don’t know this day how so many people knew we were there. We just could not believe the way they were all so willing to share with strangers who were homeless. Every Thanksgiving ever since, we hope to share what we have with others. We will be the ones to reach out to others with love and kindness.

M: Hmm, that’s a good question. Let me discuss it with your mother. I’m sure we can find a good solution.
W: Thanks. Dad.
Text 10
Good morning, everyone. Can you all hear me Good. Well, in front of us now we have one of the most famous places in China —the Forbidden City. This was the palace of the Chinese emperors from the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It was also the political center of the Government.
The Forbidden City is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. And in 1987 it was declared a World Heritage Site. During the early 20th century it did suffer some damage but there’s an eighteen-year restoration project to repair and rest ore all buildings to their pre-1912 state. Before we go inside, I’ll just mention something in the architecture of the buildings. First, color had an important significance. For example, yellow is the color of the Emperor. So almost all the roofs in the Forbidden City are yellow. Second, the number and shape were important too. For example, the main halls are all arranged in groups of 3, in a shape representing Heaven, and the houses are arranged in groups of 6, in a shape representing the Earth.
Well, now, if you take out your plan of the Forbidden City, I’ll mention a few of the landmarks before we go in.
