Then came the time for Devi to take her first lesson. She dragged her feet to the side of the
pool and sat down, in doubt whether lessons would be helpful. Scanning around, Devi spotted her
instructor across the pool, together with the little kids who jumped into the water like fish leaping
into the ocean. She watched in amazement. Envious as Devi was, a flush of embarrassment
soon crept to her cheeks when a little girl passed by, asking her not to be scared. How
embarrassing! She hung her head. (80 words)

Soon Angela came over to where Devi sat and introduced herself. Devi was astonished to be
made aware that Angela had never learned swimming until she was 20. Greatly inspired, Devi now
regained hope. She entered the pool a second time in the company of Angela, several cheerful
kids floating near to cheer her on. Devi began to feel more at ease, her movement less stiff and her
breath more even. With a grateful heart, Devi realized that she might not be a fearless swimmer, but
she would sure/surely have fun trying. (81 words)

Documents a child will need
The airlines determine what documents you’ll need to travel. In short, if you’re flying within
the country, each child might need a photo ID. If you’re flying internationally, each child will need
a passport. Additionally, children under 18 traveling to Mexico need to provide proved
documentation and letters of recommendation. For more information, please visit the US
Embassy(大使馆) website.
Unaccompanied children on flights
Some airlines may charge a fee for unaccompanied child service.

In 2013, Harris Academy, a school in south London, stopped its students from using slang(俚
语) words, such as ain’t. The move led to an argument over whether it is necessary to control the
way students speak.
The creation of slang is one way languages change. Slang, or informal language, usually
changes more rapidly than standard language. For example, the word groovy, meaning “great,” used
to be very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. But by 1980, people had stopped using it.
One important reason we use slang is to show others that we belong to a group. Another is to
communicate an idea in a more colorful or humorous way. For example, the phrase jump ship
creates a stronger image than the more standard leave an organization. While in the Internet age,
slang expressions are created faster than ever. Often, Internet slang words are created to make
messages faster and easier to type.
Some people are strongly against the use of slang. Teachers at Harris Academy were worried
that slang would prevent their students from learning how to read, write, and express themselves
correctly. They thought this might cause problems for them when they finally went on to apply to
universities or companies.
However, some people think differently. Linguist(语言学家) Tony Thorne sees slang as a way
for speakers of a language to show their creativity and humor. And, unlike what some believe, slang
is not a new phenomenon. As Thorne explains, “Slang has not become more popular, simply more
public.” In today’s highly connected world, slang has become more noticeable because of better
tools to observe language change.
Perhaps the worries mentioned above can be solved by making people understand when to use
certain forms of language. As long as people use slang correctly, there is no need to completely
avoid it.
18. Why did the author mention the example of “groovy”
A. To show why languages change. B. To show slang often changes fast.
C. To show the popularity of slang. D. To show how standard language forms.
19. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Why people use slang. B. How people use slang.
C. Different types of slang. D. The development of slang.
20. What can we infer from Tony Thorne’s words in Paragraph 5
A. Slang takes time to develop.
B. Slang is being accepted by the public.
C. Slang is increasingly known to the public.
D. More and more people are beginning to use slang.
21. What’s the author’s attitude towards Harris Academy’s decision on slang
A. He disagrees with it. B. He supports it.
C. He is confused about it. D. He is uncertain about it.

Rising temperatures driven by the climate crisis(危机) are cutting the sleep of people across the
world, the largest study to date has found.
The researchers used data from sleep-tracking wristbands(手环) used by 47,000 people over 7
months and across 68 countries. The study showed that due to increasing night-time temperatures,
the average global individual is losing 44 hours of sleep a year.
However, lost sleep affects some groups much more than others. The sleep loss per degree of
warming is about a quarter higher for women than men, twice as high for those over 65 years old
and three times higher for those in less affluent nations with limited cooling access.
Previous studies have shown that rising temperatures damage health, including increasing heart
attacks, mental health crises, and accidents and injuries. Poor sleep is also linked to these effects.
Researchers suggest that disturbed sleep may be a key factor in how heat impacts health. The
researchers say their data shows no signs of people being able to adapt to hotter nights.
“In this study, we provide the first global evidence that warmer than average temperatures
affect human sleep,” said Kelton Minor, who led the research. “It’s very likely the effect is more
serious.” Minor added that the study’s findings are important for decision-makers. They need to
make sure that cities, towns, and buildings are well adapted to heat in order to reduce the health
impacts.
The data used in the study came mainly from richer nations. The wristbands also tended to be
worn by people less likely to experience sleep disturbance from warmer temperatures.
“Lower-income people are not fully represented in the data and we’re well aware of that,” said
Minor. He said more research was needed, particularly in places that are already among the hottest
in the world.
22. Which is NOT mentioned about the study in paragraph 2
A. How the data was collected. B. The length of the study.
C. How many people were included. D. The purpose of the study.
23. What does the underlined word “affluent” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Poor. B. Polluted.
C. Rich. D. Equal.
24. How do increasing temperatures harm people
A. They cause car accidents. B. They reduce people’s sleep time.
C. They result in extreme weather events. D. They limit people’s adaptation ability.
25. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the study
A. Its findings. B. Its limitations.
C. Its applications. D. Its significance.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into
the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry frown(皱眉) on her face. “Mom, they’re all little
kids! I’m 15 already! This is silly!”
“I know, Devi,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start
somewhere!”
Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her
grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Devi had been to
was the duck pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother
had found a new job in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local
pool.
The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for.
What could be so difficult about swimming Devi confidently slid into the water and held onto the
side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the
side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi threw her
arm toward the side of the pool and caught the ledge(池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim!
Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself anxiously.
On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench(长凳), frozen with fear. She
put a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother
noticed right away that Devi was upset. “Honey, I’ve signed you up for Angela’s swimming lessons
