(22-23八年级下·江苏宿迁·期末)A loud noise wakes Jan up suddenly. She looks at the alarm clock beside the bed.
It’s five o’clock. Then she hears the noise again. It’s thunder. Then she hears a different noise.
It’s the sound of something hitting the window. She gets up and goes to the window. She can see Tom standing outside in the rain. He’s shouting at Jan, telling her to come outside.
Jan gets dressed, puts on her anorak(防水衣)and goes downstairs quietly, trying not to wake Tom’s parents.
“What are you doing, Tom ”
“The storm,” he says. “It’s the same storm as Thursday night. Let’s go to the tree. Maybe you can go home!”
Jan follows Tom down the road then she remembers something.
“The time capsule!”
Tom shows her the biscuit tin under his jacket. “I’ve got it.” And now maybe there’s the possibility she can return to the future. Soon they come to the river and then the old building.
They run up the path through the trees and arrive at the piece of land with the apple tree.
“Now what do we do ” asks Jan.
“I put the time capsule back where I found it and…”
Tom uses his hands to dig a hole by the tree. He buries the time capsule and then stands up.
Jan suddenly thinks of something.
“Tom! I wanted to give you something from the time capsule.”
“No. I don’t want anything. It’s more important for you to go home.”
Jan feels sad that Tom doesn’t want something to remember her. But he’s right. The important thing is to get home.
“I’m never going to forget you, Tom. Thanks. You’re a real friend.”
“Bye, Jan. Look for me in the future. Promise(承诺)”
“I promise.”
Then he turns and runs back to the trees. Jan watches his shadow disappear into the trees.

(22-23八年级下·江苏南通·期末)As a teenager, you may sometimes feel helpless when having problems with your parents. Chen Zanzao, a 17-year-old boy from Shenzhen, has created a charity community called Dear Theodosia to offer professional help to families facing similar issues. It now has 2000 regular participants(定期参与者).
Chen’s idea was inspired(启发) by the three-child policy. “My friend Sina and I thought it would bring problems like parental favoritism(父母偏心),” Chen said. “Most families still don’t know any methods to deal with this.”
They started to research both scientific parenting styles and people’s needs. They read a lot of literature and studies on the topic and surveyed more than 1,000 people. They found that the most effective and healthy family relationships are when parents are highly engaged(参与的) in their children’s lives.
They then founded the community to promote(推广) the idea. “We hold lectures and discussions as well as go on radio and TV programs to promote useful information,” Chen said.
Chen and his friend Sina would do one-to-one conversations with people who felt self-conscious(难为情的) about sharing their stories. “It’s understandable that at first they need time to trust us since we are so young,” Chen said. “But listening is the key.”
“We met many parents saying, ‘I never realized raising a child would be so difficult’, so I think it’s really important that parents should think over whether they could take the responsibility before they rush into anything.”

(22-23八年级下·江苏盐城·期末)A long time ago, people were very different from the way we are now. Over time, the human body changes to adapt to(适应) a new way of life. Can we expect the human body to change in the future For sure. The development of technology is changing how we live. What kind of changes can we
expect
In the future, people will probably be even taller. Most of us now have much better food than people in the past and we grow more. However, our muscles will not be as strong as now because we won’t do a lot of physical work.
We are already using our feet less, and our hands more. So we can expect that our legs will get shorter and our feet smaller, and at the same time, our fingers will get longer. And our fingers and our eyes will both get better because they’ll have to do more work together.
It’s very possible that people will have four toes, not five. The little toe really isn’t needed any more, so it will probably disappear(消失) sometime in the future.
Now, what about the mouth It’ll get smaller, perhaps, because technology improvement will mean that we don’t need to talk so much, and also because our teeth will get smaller.
Last but not least, people won’t have much hair on their bodies as now, as we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm any more.
Will all these things happen If so, when These are questions no one can answer for sure.

(22-23八年级下·江苏泰州·期末)In Chinese, what word do you usually use to call your mother It’s
“Mama”, isn’t it And as you know, in America, kids call their mother “Mom” or “Mommy”. In French, the word is “Maman”, and in Arabic(阿拉伯语), it’s “Ummi”.
Have you noticed that these words for “mother” all have a sound close to “m” Similarly, the words for “father” almost all have the sound “b” or “p”. There are over 7,000 languages around the world. The words for other things are usually very different from one language to another. But why are the words for “mother” and “father” so similar
The answer lies in how babies start to talk. The easiest sound a baby can make is “ah”. A child can make this sound without the use of his tongue(舌头) or lips (嘴唇). Then, if he is going to change things a little bit, the easiest thing to do is to break up that sound by closing his lips for a while. The child, by this point, has long been doing this to suck(吸吮) milk. And so, the baby makes the sound “mah”.
In fact, babies “speaking” in this way are just playing. Adults, however, don’t think so. When a baby says “mah mah”, it sounds as if(好似) he is calling someone. And the person is most likely(可能) to be his mother. The mother takes “mah” as meaning her. When speaking to her baby, she calls herself “mama”. The word “mama” starts to mean “mother”. This happens with human babies worldwide.
After babies begin making “m” by putting their lips together, they pick up the sound “bah” or “pah” in a similar way. When they make this sound, they are thought to be calling their second closest person: their father.
In this way, you call your mother “mama”, and your father “baba”. In fact, you have been doing this ever since you started to make sounds.
17.Paragraph(段落) 1 shows the words for “mother” in different countries sound similar by ________.
A.doing a survey B.repeating information
C.giving examples D.describing differences
18.If we want to understand why the words for “mother” and “father” sound similar, we should know ________.
A.the way babies start to talk
B.the languages around the world
C.the meanings of “mah” and “bah”
D.the difference between “mah” and “bah”
19.The babies’ original (最初的) purpose of saying “mah” is to ________.
A.start to talk B.call his mother
C.play in this way D.ask his mother for help
20.In order to make the sound “bah”, babies have to________.
A.open their lips all the time B.see their fathers
C.use neither their tongue nor lips D.put their lips together
21.What can be the best title for the passage
A.Babies’ talk with their parents B.Words that sound similar
C.“Mama” and “baba” worldwide D.Parents’ love for babies

(22-23八年级下·江苏苏州·期末)Cell phones and smartphones are a big part of modern life. Many people use them every day, including kids and teens. Now a lot of people are talking about if phones should be allowed in school.
Let’s get a clear picture of the situation first. 53% of children will own a smartphone by the age of 11 in the US. That number rises up to 95% in teenagers. Surveys show that as well as passing the time, 83% of kids use their phones to learn. Teens can spend over 7 hours a day looking at screens.
These are just some of the many, many statistics about cell phones among teens. From this, we can see that mobile technology is a big part of life for today’s teenagers.
Cell phones in school do have the power of providing super educational help. Cell phones can be used for education through the many educational apps and games out there. Mobile app stores are filled with educational materials for children of all ages. Students can also surf the Internet on their phone. There are plenty of educational resources online, from scientific research papers to exam tips and more.
At the same time, with so many kids spending hours a day looking at their phone screens, there may be problems. One of the big problems that many people talk about with phones in school is the risk of them becoming a distraction (分散注意). Kids could start looking at their phones while the teacher is talking and miss out on key information, for example. There’s also a risk of kids being unwilling to go out with friends or communicate with other people if they’re too distracted by their screens. It’s even possible for children of different ages to develop addictions (瘾) on their phones. Some studies have shown that phones could cause mental (精神的) illness.

(22-23八年级下·江苏苏州·期末)The man came early in February, one cold day, through a strong wind and a driving snow, the last snowfall of the year, walking from Bramble Hurst railway station and carrying a little black bag in his thickly gloved hand. He was wrapped(包裹)up from head to foot, and the big hat hid every inch of his face but his nose; the snow had piled itself against his shoulders and added a white cover to the bag he carried.
He rushed into the “Coach and Horses” more dead than alive, and threw his bag on the floor. “A fire,” he cried, “in the name of human charity! A room and a fire!” He shook the snow from off himself in the bar, and followed Mrs. Hall into her guest parlour(客厅).
Mrs. Hall lit the fire and left him there while she went to prepare him a meal with her own hands. As soon as the meal was well under way, she carried cloth, plates, and glasses into the parlour. “No,” he said without turning.
She was not sure if he had heard her, and was about to repeat her question. He turned his head and looked at her over his shoulder. “I like to keep them on,” he said, and she noticed that he wore big blue glasses, and had a bush side-whisker(胡须)that hid his whole face.

So why even call it a town There are more than 4,000 people of 48 nationalities. However, all of the people live underground!

“Now, men,” asked Captain Smollett, “have any of you ever seen these islands before ”
“I have, sir” said Silver. “We can anchor to the south, behind the small island. That big hill is called
Spy-glass Hill.”
“I have a map here,” said Smollett. “Is this the place ”
Long John Silver was disappointed. It was not Captain Billy Bones’ map, but an accurate copy with the red crosses and written details missing.
“Yes, sir,” he answered, “this is it.”
“Get the captain and the squire down to the cabin,” I whispered to the doctor. “Then send for me. I have terrible news.”

(22-23八年级下·江苏镇江·期末)Characters: I-Gulliver, the King-the ruler of Lilliput
I was careful to behave as well as possible, to ask the King to give me my freedom. Lilliputians soon began to lose their fear of me. They called me the Man-Mountain. Sometimes I lay down and let them dance on my hand, and from time to time children came to play games in my hair. By now I was able to speak their language well.
One day the King invited me to watch the regular entertainments, which are greatly enjoyed by him, his family, and his lords and ladies. I was most interested in the rope-dancing. A very thin rope is fixed thirty centimeters above the ground. People who want to become the King’s most important officials jump and dance on this rope, and whoever jumps highest without falling gets the best job. Sometimes the King orders his lords to dance on the rope, to show that they can still do it. This sport is, of course, rather dangerous, and there are occasional deaths as a result. It seems a strange way of choosing officials.
There was another interesting entertainment. The King holds a stick in front of him, and sometimes moves it up and down. One by one, people come up to him and jump over the stick or crawl under it. They go on jumping and crawling as the King moves the stick. The winner is the one who jumps and crawls for the longest time, and he receives a blue ribbon to wear round his waist. The second best receives a red ribbon, and the third best gets a green one. Many of the Lilliput lords wear their ribbons proudly at all times. I had certainly never seen entertainment like this in any of the countries I had visited before.

In order to find the important information on a huge ship, people plan to cut the ship into pieces. They set up many thin strings (线) across the river, which are made by high technology. Looking like Guzheng, the strings quietly cut the steel ship into pieces as if the ship was soft tofu!
Is it possible to cut ships with thin strings in real life In fact, strings are very good at cutting. For example, the egg cutting machine uses thin strings to cut eggs into pieces. A kite line can easily hurt people if it gets circle around their necks. This is because the thin strings have a very small contact area, leading to a high intensity of pressure (压强) when they cut things.
In the program, the strings are as thin as human hair. To cut the ship, the pressure needs to be 200 MPa. How strong is that pressure Imagine an elephant standing on a string! In real life, scientists won’t be able to make such thin strings that wouldn’t easily break, at least for years to come. The cutting will also create lots of heat. We don’t have the things to bear (忍耐) that high temperature while it’s also thin enough to cut through. It’s still far away from the technology in the program.

The Internet and video game technology (技术) are coming together thanks to virtual reality (VR, 虚拟现实) technology. Screens show this virtual world to our eyes while speakers bring it to our ears. However, it can be more immersive (沉浸的). To do this, it should use more of our senses(感觉). What about our hands, mouths and noses
Technology companies are working on it!
Scent (气味) is a difficult thing to recreate, according to the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech). Recently, researchers at the school created a screen that can spread different scents to a user. They programmed a computer to mix seven “typical” oils, including lemon and lavender (熏衣草). By mixing them, they can copy real smells.
Tokyo Tech said there will soon be scent libraries, full recipes (配方). Takamichi Nakamoto, who led the research, said movie theaters and video games could use this technology to make smells and become “extremely enjoyable”. Advertisements for food and makeup may also use it to attract customers.
What about our sense of touch Technologies that create a sense of touch are already common. For example, our phones vibrate (震动) as we type. After our fingertips, our mouths are the most sensitive part of our bodies. So, researchers at Carnegie Melon University, US, made VR glasses. They can “shoot” super high-pitched sound
waves (高频率的声波) at your lips, teeth and tongue.
In a demo video, we can watch spiders crawl (爬) into the mouth of a game player. She feels them! Another demo shows someone using a virtual toothbrush. Maybe soon, we will be able to give our families a virtual kiss!

(22-23八年级下·江苏宿迁·期末)I saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.
Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.
With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots—one for rice and one for wheat.
Next I formed a clay oven (炉灶) and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake (烘烤) bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.
Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.
I tried to turn over the ship’ boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.
When it was time to launch (下水), I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant labor.
I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.

pieces of bad news come one after another.” Tao said, “I feel worried, sad and afraid.” Tao’s reaction (反应) shows how people can be influenced by bad events, even when these events didn’t directly happen to them.

How can we deal with worries after sad news TEENS talked with psychologist (心理学家) Li Songwei, who used to be a doctor in Peking University. Here is their conversation:
TEENS: Is it natural to feel afraid or down after getting bad news
Li: Yes, it’s quite natural. Some people may have difficulty sleeping, or disaster-related pictures come into their minds during the daytime. These are called “acute stress responses” (急性应激反应). They can be caused by seeing pictures of things like blood or dead bodies.
TEENS: What can we do to deal with our bad feelings
Li: Try to avoid pictures or videos that make you feel uncomfortable. At the same time, we need to understand that bad things happen. Uncertainty and imperfection are parts of the world.
TEENS: What if we can’t help checking our phones
Li: Learn about time management. For example, spend half an hour reading news and then put your phone away. Pay more attention to things like exercise and study so that you won’t be influenced by bad feelings for too long.

He put my saddle and bridle on and rode up to the front door of the house. The Squire was there.
“John,” he said, “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Ride to the doctor’s and give him this note.”
“Now, Beauty, do your best,” said John. I went as fast as possible.
When we arrived at Dr White’s house, John told him, “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Squire Gordon thinks she is going to die. Please go to her immediately.”
“Yes,” said the doctor, “but my son has my horse. Can I have yours ” he asked.
