(2024·安徽·三模)If you go to the UK, you’re sure to see some small red “boxes” on the streets. They are postboxes. They are an important part of Britain.
King Charles I started the British Royal Mail service in 1635. Then in 1840, Royal Mail brought out the first stamp, the Penny Black. But people still had to go to the post office to send a letter or wait for a bellman to collect it.
Anthony Trollope, who worked in a British post office, had an idea. While traveling for work in Europe, he saw roadside postboxes in France and Belgium. He thought similar boxes would be good in Britain. In 1852, the first postboxes were made, but they were only used on the Channel Islands.
The next year, postboxes started to appear all over Britain. At first, they were green and of different shapes and sizes. But there were problems. People couldn’t always see them and even walked into them. So in 1874, Royal Mail made them all red. By 1879, the postboxes all became the way they look now—red, tall, and with a round hat-like shape at the top to keep out the rain.
Over the years, the General Post Office has kept making the boxes. Every box has the royal cypher (徽章) on it. It shows who the king or queen was when the box was made.

I could tell he was a little slower than me and I decided to catch up with him. It was about one kilometer to go on the road before I had to turn off, so I started cycling faster and faster.
Every block, I was gaining on him just a little bit. In a few minutes, I was only about 100 meters behind him. I got so excited that I really picked up speed, trying my best to push myself.
Finally, I made it. I passed him by and felt pretty good on the inside at that moment. I beat him, of course, but he didn’t even know we were racing. He was still cycling slowly along the street.
And after riding past him, I was aware (意识到) I had missed my turn as a result of being so focused (专注的) on competing with him. I had gone almost six blocks further and had to turn around and go all the way back.

The students thought it was very easy. They were excited and started to give different answers. Alice said she could carry it for twenty minutes. Sam said he could carry it for an hour. And Peter joked that he could carry it all day long. The teacher smiled and said, “It’s easier said than done. If I carry it for a few minutes, it’s not a problem. If I carry it for an hour, I may have a sore arm. If I carry it for the whole day, I may go to the hospital. Its weight doesn’t change. Our cities are busy and full of people. They’re not smart enough. Wu Yuhang, 13, from Dongguan, Guangdong Province, thinks this is a problem.
“Crossing the street can be dangerous. People cannot keep their eyes off their phones. Drivers cannot see traffic lights if their cars are behind a big truck. I once saw a billboard (广告牌) fall down in a storm. That’s the most terrible,” said Wu. “I’m trying to find smart ways to solve these problems.”
Over the past few years, Wu has invented an assistant system (辅助系统) for traffic lights. It sets LED lights along the road so that drivers can see traffic lights more easily.
To make his inventions, Wu learned programming, building models and so on. But Wu said the most important thing is to find people’s problems in lives.
Wu has a bigger plan for his future—to be a chip (芯片) engineer. “China is still behind the West in computer chíps. And chips are important if we want to build smart cities.”

Once there were four beggars (乞丐). One day, they met at an old temple at night. They were very upset because none of them had much to eat.
“I only got this piece of meat today,” the first said. “I almost got nothing,” the second said, “I just picked up a potato outside the vegetable store during the day.” The third said that all he had was a small bottle of salt. The fourth beggar had not done much better, “I only got some old beans, but they aren’t very nice!”
As they sat around the fire, the beggar with only a bottle of salt had an idea. “Let’s put all things together and boil them. In this way, we can make a tasty dish and share it.” They all agreed. However, the first beggar thought, “I don’t want to share. I’ll just pretend (假装) to throw my meat into the pot. They’ll never know and I’ll eat my meat alone later.” So he pretended to put the meat into the pot. And at the same time the other beggars had similar ideas to him. They throw some stones and wait. There’s no sound.
Mike says, “Wow! That is really deep. Let’s throw some great big rocks down there. Those should make a noise.” So they pick up a few soccer-sized rocks and throw them into the hole. Again, they hear nothing.
