【A】When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life—her English teacher, Mrs Collins.
Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.
The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word "stupid". It was the nickname a boy had given her.
In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.
One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the only non-white student in class. Mrs Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.
Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class's reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria wanted that long-waited award.

范文:
Mrs Collins encouraged her to compete for the reading award. With this kind teacher cheering her on, she gained confidence and language skills. She made so rapid progress that by mid-year, she was well on her way to speaking English fluently and had a good grasp of reading. Besides, she did well in all the other subjects. She came to school early every day, participated actively in class activities and finished homework on time. What's more, she made more and more friends in her class.
The award ceremony was coming up. She worked as hard as she could. When Mrs Collins announced Gloria as the winner in front of the whole class, it was her proudest moment. She immediately took the reading award right out of that boy's hot little hands. The boy was shocked and unwillingly handed it to her. She felt so happy for herself, owing her success to her teacher, Mrs Collins. This served as a motivation for Gloria who worked even harder in school and earned more "A" grades.
【B篇】Private Property -Keep Out!
I absolutely love my little brother and sister,Tex and Indi but sometimes I feel extremely annoyed when they don’t respect my stuff.
One afternoon, I overheard Indi and her friend Kate talking about a necklace.“Ooh! Where did you get that cool necklace " Kate asked Indi"
I just found it," replied Indi.
“I love the flower in the middle of the heart!”said Kate admiringly
“Yeah,” said Indi. “It’s my new favorite thing in the world!”
It was my necklace! Unable to bottle up my annoyance,I went straight over to them
“Excuse me, Indi,” I said. “Where did you find that necklace ”
“Right there on the floor,” Indi answered, pointing to a spot just outside my bedroom
“So you found a necklace right outside my bedroom and didn’t think it might be mine ”I stared into her eyes and asked in a louder voice.
Indi shrugged.
“Well, your favorite new thing happens to be my favorite old thing, and I'd like it back Please, please, please just leave my stuff alone once and for all!”I told her.
I must have sounded pretty angry because I found Indi’s eyes filled with tears. She unwillingly took off the necklace and threw it into my hand
“Here you go,”she sniffled(抽鼻子)and went off to the backyard with Kate
And that was that.I decided to try to change my sour mood by taking out the handicraft(工艺)box from the cupboard in the living room.I found craft sticks and seashells for a picture frame (相框),put on some music, and got down to working.
As I carefully glued on the shells.I remembered how Indi and I had found them together at the beach. How close and happy we were at that time! That’s when I decided to make the frame for Indi to apologize for overreacting. It was a task requiring time and patience. So by the time was finished.I felt definitely satisfied and even pictured Indi’s smiling face when I gave her the frame. As I felt starving, I went to the kitchen to grab a snack, leaving the glue to dry
When I returned,I found Tex busily building something with the craft sticks.

How Country Music Helped Her Heal
Brandy I didn't recognize the name that had shown up in my inbox, but I opened the email anyway. “I'm reaching out to you on behalf of my family,”Brandy wrote. “I'm sorry it took us so long to respond to your letter, but this year since my father died has been difficult.”
I realized then who Brandy was. Her father had been my anonymous(匿名的)donor. One year earlier,I'd injured my knee and underwent a surgery where the new tissue didn't come from my own body but from a donor. After the surgery a nurse handed me a booklet titled About Your Donor. She said my donor was dead and anonymous.“But some people like to send a thank you to the family through the hospital,”she explained.
It seemed like an important thing to do with my time.I'd planned to spend my recovery trying to teach myself to play country music on my guitar, something I'd been meaning to get around to for a long time. But country music could wait. Writing a letter to my donor's family took priority. I chose my words carefully, letting them know how much I appreciated the donor's generosity and how very sorry I was for their loss.
I included my email address and sent the letter to the hospital to be forwarded, but I didn't expect an answer.Especially not a whole year later. So it meant a lot to me that the family had reached out when they were ready.
Brandy and I decided to keep in touch online. There I learned a little more about her father,Larry.“What a coincidence,”I wrote to Brandy.“My father's name is Larry too.”She described her dad as the life of the party, the kind of person who made everyone's day brighter.“And he just loved country music,”she said.“It was his favorite thing in the world.”

The ability of young children to remain calm during a crisis is often limited, but a five-year-old girl Savannah from Hancock County, Indiana proved to be an exception, which can be life-saving.
The incident began with an emergency call to the local 911 dispatcher (调度员),Jason Bonham, To his surprise, the person on the other end was a little girl. Despite the gravity of the situation, her behavior and the clear conversation left a significant impression on Jason and millions who later heard the call。
Savannah was up late seeing a movie with her father, Frank, and her mother was on a business trip. It was during the movie night that she heard disturbing sounds from the kitchen. With their pet dog barking ceaselessly, Savannah went to investigate.
In the kitchen, Savannah found her father on the floor, clutching (捂着) his chest. She was terrified but remembered her parents' advice about emergency situations. Her father was unable to speak, indicating he was in critical condition.
Savannah took the initiative to contact emergency services, dialing 911 from the kitchen wall phone. Her parents had taught her what to do in such situations, which now proved invaluable.
Jason, the 911 operator, had been in this job for 11 years but was amazed by S’s calmness. Despite the challenging circumstances, Jason was able to gather crucial information about Savannah's father's condition. Savannah conveyed her father's symptoms of difficulty breathing and chest pains to Jason, which helped identify the emergency as a possible heart condition.
Jason kept Savannah on the line, distracting her with light conversation' while making sure she was keeping an eye on her dad. Jason asked Savannah to unlock the front door for the convenience of paramedics' (急救医士) entering. Savannah kept communicating with Jason until the paramedics arrived. She performed admirably, not only updating Jason about her father's condition but also taking practical measures, like unlocking the front door for the paramedics.
Before accompanying her father to hospital, Savannah called her mother. And her father was immediately taken into surgery the moment they reached the hospital,

At 11:15 a.m, I set out on a high-altitude training run in California's Sequoia National Park in sunny,70°F temperatures. I was preparing for a marathon and came to the park for a scenic workout, and to see how close I could get to the 10,500-foot passes on the top of the Great Western Divide.I climbed five miles and 1,000 feet before the trail's surface became snow-covered and dangerous enough that I had to turn around.
On my run,I noted the potential instability of the five-foot-deep snow bridge over Franklin Creek, and I knelt to examine it. There were no visible signs of weakness, and the surface was rock hard—I guessed it could support a truck. I crossed without incident.
Conditions past the stream stayed cool for the period of my run, but I expected the lower snow to soften as the day warmed. So when I approached the snow bridge again on my return trip,I examined it thoroughly.
I knelt to look through the snow for cracks(裂缝)—danger signs. From my position, however, I couldn't see the bridge's base, which was losing strength as the stream water splashed(飞溅) the icy structure from below.Had I been able to see its base,I might have noted that it had weakened.
I was two miles when the bridge collapsed beneath my feet. Falling into the fast-moving,40°F water, I struggled against the powerful current, trying to stay afloat(漂浮的) and slow my passage through the tunnel. The powerful, snow melt-fueled current swept me downstream, and I grasped anything that would keep the waist-deep stream from pushing me over the 10-foot waterfall downstream. By the time my freezing fingers caught a branch, the current had swept me 60 feet down a tunnel of ice. I grasped a pencil-size branch, with all my strength and moved slowly out of the rushing water into a cave barely large enough to keep my bent body, out of the powerful stream. I was looking for a way out, but the tunnel extended as far as I could see. In an attempt to calm myself and think clearly, I lay back and stared at the cave's ceiling
