Now I’d like to take a few minutes to tell you about some changes to the Soccer Club for the coming season. This season we’ll be playing all our matches for both the junior and senior competitions at King’s Park, instead of Royal Park or Queen’s Park, which were used last season. As usual, we hope to begin the season with a picnic next Saturday at the clubhouse. Please try and come to the picnic as it’s always good fun. At the last week of the season we usually have a big dinner and present prizes to the players. This season we have more teams than ever. We hope to have ten teams, instead of five, in the junior competition and they will play at 8:30 am on Saturday mornings. Training sessions will be held in King’s Park on Wednesday afternoons for the juniors and they will be wearing red shirts again this year. In a gray box, I have a thick pile of love letters. I imagine about sharing them with a granddaughter when I’m 90. But my most treasured love letter is from one of my best friends. It’s a handwritten letter years ago when I was having trouble getting over a man. Her letter is the most romantic in my pile. It made no excuses. It simply let me know that I was loved.
Reflecting on her gift, and the dying art of handwritten letters in our age of emails and emoticons, I chose to conduct an experiment this Christmas: replacing presents with heartfelt, handwritten love letters for my family members.
In our digital era, most of us rarely take the time to share deeply considered thoughts and emotions with the people in our lives. Handwriting captures the writer’s emotions, often preserved longer than digital exchanges. However, technology is taking over. First came typewriters and keyboards. Now a new brain-computer lets people type with their minds. What are we losing when we sacrifice the physical labor behind the written word We tend to value what we struggle for. Have we undervalued the human exchange of ideas
That day, I came across a letter my mom wrote to her parents when she was young. She seemed so comfortable with her parents. It was a relationship I didn’t have with her. I was inspired by my mother’s letter to her parents when I sat down to write my letter to her. I wanted her to know my love, and to close the crack that technology and culture had created between us. With each sentence, I was discovering new and deeper ways of seeing my mother, and making myself known to her in more thoughtful ways as well.
Eight single-space pages later, my hand was aching but I was done. It was only the first of my love letters, but it was already clear: What had begun as a fun project was in fact one of the most important undertakings of my life.
24.Why does the author mention her love letters in Paragraph 1
A.To show her grand charm as a young girl. B.To share them with one of her granddaughters.
C.To highlight the value of handwritten letters. D.To look back upon her romantic relationship.
25.How will technology probably affect us in the digital age
A.Making our interaction less emotional. B.Encouraging our thoughtful communication.
C.Saving our physical labor in conveying emotions. D.Increasing our effort in handwritten exchanges.
26.Why did the author handwrite a letter to her mother
A.To give her mother a big surprise. B.To answer her mother’s handwritten letter.
C.To bridge a communication gap. D.To make her mother feel more comfortable.
27.What did the author learn from her experiment
A.The irreplaceable bond of family members. B.The tendency of information technology.
C.The expression of emotions in the digital age. D.The power of handwritten correspondence.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.C 27.D
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。短文以作者自己的亲身经历,说明了手写信件的力量。
24.推理判断题。根据第一段“But my most treasured love letter is from one of my best friends. It’s a handwritten letter years ago when I was having trouble getting over a man. Her letter is the most romantic in my pile. It made no excuses. It simply let me know that I was loved.”( 但我最珍贵的关于爱的信是我最好的朋友写的。
根据第三段“In our digital era, most of us rarely take the time to share deeply considered thoughts and emotions with the people in our lives.”(在我们的数字时代,我们大多数人很少花时间与我们生活中的人分享深思熟虑的想法和情感)可知,数字时代让我们的互动不那么有感情。故选A项。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段“I wanted her to know my love, and to close the crack that technology and culture had created between us.”( 我想让她知道我的爱,并弥合技术和文化在我们之间造成的裂痕。)可知,作者要手写一封信给她的母亲是因为想弥合沟通差距。故选C项。
27.推理判断题。根据第三段“Handwriting captures the writer’s emotions, often preserved longer than digital exchanges.”( 手写文字捕捉了作者的情感,通常比数字交流保存得更久)以及最后一段“It was only the first of my love letters, but it was already clear: What had begun as a fun project was in fact one of the most important undertakings of my life.”( 这只是我的第一封关于爱的信,但我已经很清楚:一开始只是一个有趣的项目,实际上是我一生中最重要的事业之一。)可知,从实验中,我们学到了手写信件的力量。故选D项。

Children can gain a stronger connection with the environment through story writing, according to a new study. The research was focused on the issue of plastic litter in Latin American countries along the Pacific Ocean.
The experts set out to explore how a story-writing activity may influence the opinions of children about plastic litter, as well as how their behavior may be affected. “A key element of our project was to examine the children’s responses to questionnaires (调查表) they completed before and after writing these stories,” said study co-author Dr. Kayleigh Wyles. “We found that their knowledge on the topic increased and they became more active, as they reported doing more pro-environmental acts afterwards.”
The children were asked to use their imaginations about litter items that are commonly found on the beach, such as straws and plastic bags. They were then instructed to imagine how these items ended up on the beach in the first place. The writing project showed that children were more likely to think about ways of preventing litter from entering the environment, rather than just cleaning it up. According to the researchers, the most popular solutions suggested in the stories were the regeneration and reduction of litter.
Overall, nearly 90 children participated in the study and in more than half of the stories, the children showed awareness of the dangers of plastic pollution in the marine (海洋的) environment, including the risk of animal involvement. Many stories described consequences of animals ingesting plastic, such as injuries or death.
“Stories offer a new and different way to explore what people believe and how they understand their environment,” said lead study author Estelle Praet. “The results were truly inspiring and showed the children’s awareness of plastic’s impact on marine life and the environment.”
28.Which might Dr. Kayleigh Wyles agree with about the story-writing activity
A.It changes the kids’ way to use plastic products.
B.It promotes the kids’ knowledge on plastic litter.
C.It affects the kids’ responses to difficult questions.
D.It makes the kids more imaginative in story writing.
29.What was the most mentioned way to deal with the litter items in the stories
A.Cleaning them up regularly. B.Destroying them on the beach.
C.Delivering them to factories. D.Recycling and reducing them.
30.What does the underlined word “ingesting” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Giving away. B.Taking in. C.Escaping from. D.Living with.
31.What is Estelle Praet’s attitude towards the results of the study
A.Skeptical. B.Objective. C.Optimistic. D.Critical.
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.B 31.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文。一项研究发现故事创作是培养孩子环保意识的一个好办法。
28.细节理解题。根据第二段中Dr. Kayleigh Wyles说的话“We found that their knowledge on the topic increased and they became more active, as they reported doing more pro-environmental acts afterwards.(我们发现他们对这个话题的了解增加了,他们变得更加积极,因为他们报告说之后做了更多的环保行为)”可知,通过故事创作活动孩子们掌握了更多关于塑料垃圾的知识。故选 B。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“According to the researchers, the most popular solutions suggested in the stories were the regeneration and reduction of litter.(根据研究人员称,故事中最受欢迎的解决方案是重复利用和减少垃圾)”可知,孩子们提到最多的应对办法是重复利用和减少垃圾。故选 D。
根据第五段中的“Stories offer a new and different way to explore what people believe and how they understand their environment(故事提供了一种新的、不同的方式来探索人们的信仰以及他们如何理解他们的环境)”和“The results were truly inspiring…(结果真的很鼓舞人心……)”可推断出,Estelle Praet对故事创作活动对孩子们的影响持积极肯定的态度。故选C。

Artificial intelligence is being introduced to match NHS hospital patients with home carers, meaning they can be discharged (出院)five times faster than before.
The software, developed by the care provider Cera, contains a database of thousands of social care staff including their availability, location, specific qualifications and language. NHS staff uploads details of patients needing social care and within minutes, the software finds and notifies the most suitable people available via an app. Cera launched the AI tool last month in five NHS regions, covering a population of a million. Dr Ben Maruthappu, a former A&E doctor who is founder and CEO of Cera, said that the technology was a big leap forward in releasing and reducing NHS pressure by freeing beds.
He said, “Every day someone is in hospital when they could be home, which costs the NHS about 1,500. Patients want to be at home, not in a hospital bed. One of the reasons why they aren’t discharged in a timely way is that care providers aren’t able to organise the care quickly enough. Every day tens of thousands of patients need to be matched up with tens of thousands of carers.”
“Organising this carer-patient match just depending on people’s effort is a very complicated process, which is time-consuming and not efficient. Nonetheless, by using AI to tackle this issue, we can rapidly match carers to patients on the same day.”
The platform is being introduced at seven new “digital areas” run by Cera. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, unlike the current discharge system which often stops over weekends. Cera employs more than 10,000 staff, delivering 50,000 appointments a day.
The AI takes into account a patient’s specific needs. For example, if they have dementia or do not speak English, it matches them with the most suitable carer. It also schedules visits, aiming to ensure continuity of care, with patients seeing the same carer over and over.
32.What can we learn about the software from paragraph 2
A.It reduces patients’ pressure.
B.It includes a million staff’s information.
C.It requires patients to upload their private information.
D.It possesses the capacity of matching patients and carers.
33.What prevents patients from discharging quickly according to the passage
A.The special requirements of patients. B.The shortage of experienced carers.
C.The insufficiency of care organization. D.The lack of the advanced medical facilities.
34.How is paragraph 4 developed
A.By giving definitions. B.By presenting examples.
C.By stating statistics. D.By making comparisons.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Patients Enjoy a Better Hospital Atmosphere
B.Patients Go Home Sooner with Program to Find Care
C.Patients Need More and More Suitable Care Staff Now
D.Patients Receive Thoughtful Care by Artificial Intelligence

B

31.What is Estelle Praet’s attitude towards the results of the study
A.Skeptical. B.Objective. C.Optimistic. D.Critical.

“What are your plans for that day ” questions Rocky. “I want to do something special to promote our beautiful English language,” dreams Jennifer.

“Where are they from ” asks Melissa. “I don’t know that but I heard the lady talking to the grocery store owner. She had great difficulty explaining her requirements. Her son and daughter also could not understand much. Why don’t we help them improve their English ” wonders Jennifer.
“It is a wonderful idea. Shall we go and let them know what we think ” asks Rocky. “Not now. We will go to meet them tomorrow,” decides Jason.
The next day, the five friends ring the doorbell of house No.10. A young girl opens the door and smiles at them. “May we come in ” asks Melissa. “We are your neighbors.”
The girl calls her mother. The sweet fat lady invites them inside with a smile. All of them sit on the chairs laid out on the front porch (门廊).
Jason explains their plan of helping them understand and speak English better. The lady seems grateful.
“We will help you in learning how to speak and understand our language,” says Lindsay.
