When I was seven years old, my family created an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive. After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what they should do. Each had its own job.
On the fifth day a tragedy happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their "earthquake", one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up their tunnel building to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.
My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their
tunnels were gone. Although much time passed, I still thought of that ant farm. Mum hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were
able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learnt that they should be admired for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity is a natural
part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another. Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.
39. What can we know from Paragraph 2 and 3
A. The writer broke the glass farm because it made his face
B. The ants died one by one because the tunnels were destroyed.
C. The writer's mother wanted him to learn how to feed ants.
D. The ants gave up the tunnel building because they were busy doing other things.
40. What did the writer come to realize a few years later
A. Teamwork is very important not only for ants but also for us.
B. The ants that gave up should not be admired.
C. Unlike people, working hard is not so important for the ants.
D. The ants are able to make an amazing world for people.
41.What does the writer want to tell us through the last paragraph
A. We must build many tunnels in our lives because tunnels are easily destroyed.
B. Giving up is a good way to protect ourselves when we meet troubles.
C. When we meet difficulties, we should accept them and try to overcome them.
D. Adversity is not common, but people should not be afraid of it.
42.Which is the best title for the passage
A. An ant farm B. Ants fear adversity
C. What my mum taught me D. Good lessons from ants
C
As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes (笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer. It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modem education.
“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”
“I’m not in the mood(情绪, 心情) to write when faced with a pen and paper.” Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital, said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
43. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because ________.
A. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays
B. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character
C. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently
D. computers have become a trend (趋势)and fashion in China
44. The word “aesthetic” in Paragraph 6 probably means“________”.
A. artistic B. useful C. ugly D. displeasing
45. From the passage we can infer that ________.
A. more and more students will give up writing on a computer
B. writing by hand will give way to typing by computer one day
C. the typing article better expresses one’s feelings and quality
D. more and more students will pay attention to handwriting
46. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. To Type or to Handwrite
B. The Value of Chinese Characters
C. Writing by Computer will Replace Writing by Hand
D. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing
D
We all know that recycling rubbish is very important. But sometimes it is not so convenient when we can’t find a recycling bin anywhere.
Now a team of middle school students from North Dakota, US, has solved that problem. They turned their idea into reality with their Recycling Bin App (应用程序). This app encourages people to recycle. It provides users with a map of local recycling centers. And it allows them to save locations as favorites. Besides, this app also reminds users to recycle.
The group of nine sixth-graders is from STEM Center Middle School. They came up with the idea as part of a school project for the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. Their school provides professional app training. It gave 10 teams Samsung tablets as prizes.
The contest aims to develop interest in science, technology, engineering and math. In this contest, students present an app design that could solve a problem in their school or community. The nine students came up with the idea for Recycling Bin when they saw a need for more recycling in their community.
“We thought that this would really help a lot of people,” Jaden Hilkemann, 12, told Time For Kids.
They kept their design simple so that anyone could use it. Now the free Recycling Bin App has been put into use in the app store.
“I was so excited when it went up on the app store,” Seralyn Blake, 12, said. “A lot of my family members downloaded the app. It was pretty cool.”
47. What could the Recycling Bin App provide us
A. A recycling bin. B. A recycling bike.
C. A recycling center. D. A map of local recycling centers.
48. Why did the nine six-graders want to design the app
A. Because their teachers asked them to do so.
B. Because they saw the need for more recycling in their community.
C. Because they wanted to get successful.
D. Because they wanted to get the money from the school.
49. What did the people think of their app
A. They thought it was expensive.
B. They thought it was difficult to use.
C. They didn’t like it.
D. They liked it and downloaded it to use.
50. What is the best title of the passage
A. Students’ App Can Help Recycling
B. Students’ App Won a Prize

Dear Linda,
I’m glad to hear from you. Recently my school has arranged rich and colorful labor education activities. I know you are interested in it, so I’d like to tell you something about it.
Labor is important for students. It can help students develop the habit of independence and learn to do many things by themselves. I often do housework at home when I am free. I help my mother do the dishes and take out the trash. I also help clean the house. Besides, there are some volunteer activities, such as cleaning up the park, picking up the rubbish and so on.
I think these activities are good for us. We not only experienced the pleasure of labor, but also made a lot of friends.
Yours,
Li Hua

Welcome to “Know Your Town”. Today I’m going to talk about the local market and food. We’re very lucky to have a wonderful market here. The market used to be next to the old train station, but it was moved to the field by the river. The market is now open six days a week. From Tuesday to Saturday you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and cheese from the area. But if you come on Sunday, you’ll find a different market. There will be many local people selling things they’ve made — like bags, postcards and clothes. People often ask what our local dish is. We do have Ratatouille that isn’t really made anywhere else. There’s a new French restaurant on High Street: Martin’s. It is popular because it sells the most delicious seafood in town.
