Everyone “talks” with their hands at least sometimes. Some people’s hand-talking, or gesturing (手势) matches their messages well. Other people like to make gestures that can be confusing. And still others don’t use their hands much at all. No matter which group you are in, it’s important to pay attention to your hand gestures while you are communicating. And also remember hand gestures can have cultural meanings.
A few years ago, I was a speaker at a conference in Lisbon, Portugal. It was my first time in Portugal, and I became immediately fond of the special pastries (糕点) that Lisbon and Portugal are known for. One morning I went into a bakery and ordered two of the pastries. I did so by holding up two fingers, similar to the “victory” or “peace” gesture in the United States. The person behind the counter put three pastries in the box. I later learned that the gesture for two would raise thumb and index finger. Even though my thumb wasn’t showing, the person behind the counter thought I was signaling for three.
I was lucky that I didn’t get into more trouble than an extra pastry. Many hand gestures are not universal. Before speaking in a country that you are not familiar with, do some research to find out which gestures might be misunderstood, not understood at all or rude.
24.Why did the author go to Lisbon, Portugal
A. To taste pastries. B. To take a holiday.
C. To attend a meeting. D. To learn Portuguese culture.
25.What does the underlined word “universal” refer to in para3
A. Normal. B. Independent. C. Common. D. Complex.
26.What can we learn from the author’s experience
A. One should be careful when ordering food in Portugal.
B. Hand gestures may have different meanings in different cultures.
C. The person behind the counter understood the author’s gesture.
D. The person behind the counter cheated the author.
27.The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to__
A. tell us that hand gestures are not the same worldwide
B. explain the general use of gestures
C. ask us to use correct hand gestures in Portugal
D. share a funny story in Portugal

Although toys’ packaging says it’s educational, it doesn’t make it so. That’s the finding from a new study in JAMA Pediatrics that found some toys being marketed as language promoters got in the way of learning.
Research shows that for kids to understand, speak and eventually read or write a language, they need to hear it—lots of it. And it’s never too early for parents and caregivers to get talking. That explains the booming industry in talking electronic toys that claim to help kids learn language.
Professor Anna Sosa, of Northern Arizona University, led the study and says she gave families three different kinds of toys to play with: books, traditional toys like humble blocks and a shape sorter, and electronic toys. Sosa says she picked those toys because they are advertised in their packaging as language promoters for babies between the ages of 10 and 16 months.
“We had a talking on farm animal names and things,” Sosa says of the electronic toys. “We had a baby cell phone. And we had a baby laptop. So you open the cover and start pushing buttons, and it tells you things. The parent child couples were asked to play separately with each type of toy over the course of three days.”
“When there’s something else that’s doing some talking, the parents seem to be sitting on the sidelines and letting the toy talk for them and respond for them,” Sosa says. “That’s bad because the best way a toy can promote language in infants and toddlers is by stimulating interaction between parent and child. There’s simply no evidence that a young child can learn language directly from a toy. It isn’t responsive enough. It isn’t social.”
As for the other toys, traditional blocks and puzzles stimulated more conversation than the electronic toys, and books outscored them all. But don’t underestimate the humble block. While traditional toys fell short of books in interaction quantity, Sosa notes, they kept pace in terms of quality.
28.What is the finding of the research led by Professor Anna Sosa
A. Toy industry is facing new challenges in marketing.
B. Kids should be taught to learn with toys as early as possible.
C. People might be misled by the statements of some toy makers.
D. Parents need to be cautious when choosing toys for their kids.
29. According to the passage, why are talking electronic toys so popular
A. Because they represent the latest creations.
B. Because they arouse the interest in learning.
C. Because they are used as an educational tool.
D. Because they are easy for the kids to control.
30.We can infer from the passage that it is necessary for the parents to ________.
A. share their experiences of reading with their kids
B. spare more time to stay with their kids at home
C. encourage their kids to attend social activities
D. get involved in the conversations with their kids
31.What is the author’s attitude to electronic toys as language promoters
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Objective.

Angel Garcia Crespo is a computer engineer at Carlos Ⅲ University of Madrid in Spain. His group has invented a new way for deaf blind people to “watch” TV. The idea for the technology grew out of previous work by his group. The team had already worked on making audiovisual (视听的) materials accessible to people with either vision or hearing disabilities. But the group wanted to help people with both challenges. So they asked some deaf blind people what would help.
In addition to relying on their sense of touch to communicate, deaf blind people can also get and send information with a Braille line. The Braille system uses patterns of raised dots to stand for letters and numbers. A Braille line is an electronic machine with a changeable Braille display. Dots rise up or drop down based on the information sent to the machine.
Now the new system changes TV signals to data a Braille line can use. “The key to the system is the possibility of using subtitles (字幕) to collect TV information,” Garcia Crespo explains. “Subtitles travel with the image (影像) and the audio in electromagnetic waves we don’t see. But an electronic system can keep those waves.”
First, a computer program, or app, pulls out the subtitles and visual descriptions from the broadcast signal. The system then combines the information and changes both into data for Braille.
Now another app gets to work, which sends the data out to people’s Braille lines on demand. “This is done in real time, in less than a second,” Garcia Crespo says. This lets a deaf blind person “watch” TV as it’s broadcast. The system will work with various Braille lines, as long as there’s a bluetooth connection available. Now, the system is only used in Europe, and it should soon be available in the US.
32.What inspired Garcia Crespo’s group to work on the new technology
A. Deaf blind people’s poor life.
B. Their pity on the disabled people.
C. The challenges they face in work.
D. Their group’s previous research.
33.Why can the electronic system collect TV information
A. It can combine all kinds of broadcast signals.
B. It can keep the waves with subtitles travelling.
C. It can work together with a variety of Braille lines.
D. It can pull out the subtitles and visual descriptions.
34.What does the author think of the future of the new technology
A. Challenging. B. Bright. C. Rewarding. D. Hopeless.
35.What should be a suitable title for the text
A. New Technology Is Improving Deaf blind People’s Life
B. A New Braille Line Is Applied to Disabled People’s Life
C. A Spanish Group Makes TV Accessible to Blind People
D. New Technology Helps Deaf blind People “Watch” TV

Should mobile phones be allowed at school
Nowadays mobile phones are becoming more and more popular among senior high school students. But people have different opinions about whether mobile phones should be allowed at school or not.
Everything has two sides, and mobile phone is not an exception,it has both advantages and disadvantages. Some students hold the opinion that they should take their mobile phones to school, which bring them conveniences. First, they can learn about the world and the latest information in time. Second, it's convenient for them to communicate with their parents and friends. Moreover, they can surf the Internet at any time in any where to get the message they want to know. However, others are against using phones at school, as they think students get addicted to phones easily, especially playing on-line games. Spending too much time on phones has bad effect on their study, which may also influences their sleep and does harm to their eyesight.
As far as I am concerned, senior high school students have a weak self-control, mobile phone does more harm than good, so it shouldn't be allowed at school.
读后续写(满分25分)
Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in need of help. He took out the money and gave it to them. Their father said something in his language, which meant “You are doing me a great favor, and I am very grateful to you.” The man stood up with difficulty and put his arm around Edward’s shoulders. At that time, he saw a bright smile spread across the man’s face. He smiled at the father, waved goodbye to the family and went home delightedly.
When Edward came home, his father asked what book he had bought. He shook his head, saying he didn’t buy any book because he gave the money to a German family who were in ragged clothes trembling in the chill wind. Edward said, “I think I can wait for my books till next New Year .” “My dear boy .” said his father , “ Here is a whole bundle of books . I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift .” It was on that very day Edward realized a small act of kindness may be powerful enough to make a huge difference.
