Teaching objectives: after learning the lesson, students should be able to
1. knowledge objectives: get the main idea of the text (to tell Ss. the importance of developing hobbies that hobbies can make them grow as a person by taking David as an example); master the words of expressing and describing hobbies (climbing, dancing, active, interesting…);
2. ability objectives: master the reading skills such as skimming and scanning; strengthen the spoken English by talking about the hobbies with classmates; develop a hobby that can improve English (e.g. listening to English song).
3. emotional objectives: aware the importance of develop hobbies; share the hobbies with friends, and have a good understanding of classmates.
Key points: to teach Ss. understand the text, and help Ss. find a hobby to improve English.
Difficult points: to help Ss. find a hobby that can make them learn and improve English easily.
Teaching procedures (40mins.):
Pre-reading (5mins.):
1. T. asks Ss. 4 questions:
Q1: Do you have hobbies
Q2: What are your hobbies
Q3: What do you think of your hobbies
Q4: What advantages have brought to you
2. T. plays the tape about the text, David’s hobbies, and asks Ss. to underline the vocabulary mentioned in Part1, Part2.
Purpose:
To arouse Ss.’ interest and attract their attention, and help Ss. consolidate the vocabulary.
While-reading (25mins.):

Skimming:
After listening to the tape, T. asks Ss. 3 questions:
Q1: What is the main idea of the text
Q2: What is the topic sentence
Q3: How many parts can be divided
Scanning:
T. asks Ss. to read Para.1, and asks Ss. to answer the following question:
Q1: What advantages can David’s hobbies bring to him
T. asks Ss. to read Para.2-3, and asks Ss. to answer the following questions:
Q1: When did David become a successful writer
Q2: What hobbies does David have
T. asks Ss. to read Para.4, and asks Ss. to answer the following questions:

Q2: Will David’s new books be successful
Purpose:
To make Ss. cultivate the reading skills such as skimming for the main idea of the text, scanning for the specific information.
Careful reading:
T. asks Ss. to read the passage carefully, decide whether the statements are true or false and explain the reasons.
1. Hobbies can bring pleasure and success.
2. David is a writer.
3. David took part in the reading class.
4. David dislike volleyball, but he likes to write something about volleyball.
5. David published his book in 2012, and he became a writer at that time.
Purpose:
To help Ss. develop the good habit of reading carefully.
Post reading (10mins.):
Work in a group.
Find the hobbies that can help improve English together, and fill in the chart after discussing.

The lesson lacks of activities, which makes Ss. bored in class. However, T. has a good understanding for Ss. weakness, which try best to help Ss. English.
