Joseph Bologne, also known as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is perhaps the most famous musician and composer you’ve never heard of.
Bologne was born in 1745 on the French Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe, son of an enslaved Senegalese woman and a white plantation owner. Bologne’s father was eager for him to acquire a good education and he was sent to France to be schooled in literature and fencing (击剑). As well as showing great skill in sport, Bologne was intelligent and appealing.
As if being handsome, clever and a champi on athlete wasn’t enough, Bologne was also a seriously skilled musician and composer. His main instrument was the violin, and in 1761, he was made a member of the Royal Guards as a soldier and musician. It was around this time that he became known as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges in recognition of his skill as a fencer and horseman. He was invited to join the incredibly distinguished Concert des Amateurs as the first violinist and became its leader in 1773.
Although things were going very well for Bologne, he still experienced apparent racism. Some of the opera’s leading women campaigned against having what they called “a mixed-race person in charge of the opera. Despite this attempt to undermine his career, he fell into favour with the influential playwright Madame de Montesson, who put him in charge of her private theatre and introduced him to her husband, the Duke of Orleans. When the French Revolution broke out in 1789, Bologne sided with the revolutionaries. However, he was later imprisoned for 18 months and ultimately died in 1799 due to a severe leg injury.
Shortly after Bologne’s death, Napoleon restored slavery in the French colonies and also banned Bologne’s music in an attempt to erase him from French history. However, Afro-Caribbean communities in France, and on Guadeloupe and Martinique have been working tirelessly to keep his legacy alive and Joseph Bologne is now enjoying a long overdue and richly deserved revival.
24.What can we learn about Bologne from paragraph 2 and paragraph 3
A.He had a difficult and troubled childhood.
B.He displayed exceptional talents in multiple fields.
C.His athletic abilities earned him access to Concert des Amateurs.
D.He was named the Chevalier de Saint-Georges for his musical achievements.

A.Bologne faced evident discrimination.
B.Bologne’s talents were a threat to the opera.
C.Bologne shouldn’t have joined the private theatre.
D.Bologne’s career prospects suffered from a lack of foresight.
26.What does the underlined expression “fell into favour with” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Got in contact with. B.Met the resistance of.
C.Had cooperation with. D.Gained the support of.
27.What is happening to Bologne’s music now
A.It’s banned for political reasons. B.It’s receiving conflicting opinions.
C.It’s being welcomed and celebrated. D.It’s leading to a revolution in music.

While work on lab-grown meat has made the headlines in recent years, similar work on fruit is less common. Scientists at Plant & Food Research in New Zealand are aiming to change that by growing fruit tissue (组织) from plant cells (细胞) that they hope will one day taste, smell and feel like real fruit. Researchers hope that the program will help guarantee the country’s food security.
“Here in New Zealand, we’re good at growing traditional horticultural crops (园艺作物),”said Dr. Ben Schon, the lead scientist for the Food by Design program at the government-backed Plant & Food Research, “but looking into the future, there’s a lot of change coming in the world with population growth, increasing urbanisation (城镇化) and climate change.”
The program aims to grow fruit tissue without the parts that are usually discarded like the peel of the banana. Providing consumers with only the tissue of fruit will help reduce food waste, said Schon.
Lab-grown foods could play an important role in sustainable (可持续的) agriculture but are still in the very early stages of development, according to Dr. Ali Rashidinejad, a senior food scientist at Massey University in Palmerston North. Since lab-grown food is a completely new idea, once it is developed, it will then have to prove its safety through long expensive experiments. The Plant & Food Research program started 18 months ago, but scientists warn that the end goal of getting something that is nutritional and enjoyable to eat is some years away and might not be achievable at all.
The technology would probably be suitable for growing fruit tissue within cities, said Dr. Sam Baldwin, a strategy leader at Plant & Food Research, in the hope that it would reduce the cost and carbon emissions created when transporting food into urban centres.
28.What is the purpose of the program
A.To raise concern. B.To promote well-being.
C.To balance diet. D.To ensure food safety.
29.Which aspect of lab-grown fruit did Dr. Ben Schon talk about
A.The plans for developing the fruit. B.The process of designing the program.
C.The necessity of growing the fruit. D.The problems with experimenting on the fruit.
30.What does the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Broken down. B.Thrown away. C.Brought up. D.Taken in.
31.What is the scientists’ concern about the program
A.Its difficult research process. B.Its short research period.
C.Its uncertain research result. D.Its expensive research facilities.

In many movies, the clothing the actors wear is an important part of the story. In Rome, there is a workshop that has been a big part of Italian and international film history for 60 years.
Tirelli Costumes in Rome is a workshop that makes special clothing and costumes. It has earned the name the “Oscar tailor’s shop” for its work in film costume design.
In recent years, its workers helped create the costumes for Ridley Scott’s movie Napoleon. The film’s costume designers were nominated (提名) for an Oscar. “Maybe it will win! Let’s add another medal to the medal collection,” the shop’s current head, Dino Trappetti said. “Of course, the Oscar is not won by the shop. The Oscar is won by the costume designers. But the tailor’s shop has the honor of having participated to make it win.”
Umberto Tirelli started the shop in November 1964. It has been behind 17 Academy Awards for best costume design. The beginning of the workshop started with Tirelli’s passion for collecting old clothes. He searched for clothing in the markets worldwide. He slowly collected more than 15,000 real pieces of clothing that date from 1750 to 1980. At the start, the shop had a sewing machine and two cutters.
Tirelli could have accepted many international projects because the market was immediately interested. But Tirelli, who died in 1990, was not sure enough though the co-workers agreed on expanding the market. Dino Trappetti remembered him saying: “I’m not going to America. If America wants, America will come looking for me.”
Over 60 years, the tailor’s shop has created more than 300,000 costumes which feature hand-cut, hand-sewn creations. Costume designers come up with ideas from historical information.
32.Why is Tirelli Costumes called the “Oscar tailor’s shop”
A.It makes contributions to film costume design.
B.Its costumes are popular with many Oscar actors.
C.It is a film workshop and shoots many Oscar films.
D.It offers interesting stories about costume designers.
33.Why is the film Naploeon mentioned
A.To promote the film.
B.To praise Tirelli Costumes.
C.To show the film’s achievements.
D.To explain the importance of costume designers.
34.What lesson can we draw from the starting of the workshop
A.Time waits for no man. B.Well begun is half done.

How to Make the World a Better Place

Share your knowledge. If a friend needs skills in a certain area, offer your advice. Perhaps she is struggling to set up a computer, and you know how to do that. Offer whatever ability you have, but always remember to be polite.
Help a stranger. Your small actions can brighten the day of others. Hold the door for someone whose hands are full. 38 Give your seat on the bus to an old man. The key is expecting nothing in return for your acts of kindness.
39 Show the people close to you how much you care about them. Tell them they mean a lot to you. Make a beautiful gift for a friend. Take your husband to his favourite fun place if he has had a hard week. Tell your children how much they mean to you.

In a small town, there lived a young elementary school student named Timmy, whose lateness had become his worst trait (特点) in his school.
Every school morning, he struggled to get out of bed, often finding himself rushing through breakfast and forgetting important things like his homework or lunchbox. Meanwhile, his classmates would glance at the empty seat beside them, exchanging knowing looks as the clock ticked pa st the start of the class. When Timmy finally arrived, he would often find himself the center of attention, and his cheeks red with embarrassment as he apologised. Deep down, Timmy felt a growing sense of discomfort and shame about his habitual lateness. His teachers and classmates were concerned about the effect of his constant lateness on his studies.
One day, Timmy’s class teacher, Mrs. Johnson, decided to solve the issue. She approached Timmy with a gentle smile, “Timmy, can we talk about something important ”
Timmy looked up and replied, a bit nervous, “Sure, Mrs. Johnson.”
She crouched (蹲下) down to his level, speaking softly but seriously and sincerely, “I’ve noticed you’ve been late for class quite often. Do you know being on time is very important ”
Timmy lowered his head and said, “Yes, but...”
Mrs. Johnson continued, “Being on time helps you not miss out on your lessons. It’s also about respect for your classmates and me. When you’re late, it can disrupt (打乱) the whole class. We all miss you when you’re not here on time.”
Timmy nodded and said, a look of understanding on his face, “I didn’t realize it was affecting everyone. I’ll try to be better, Mrs. Johnson. But I have difficulty waking up and getting out of bed. Every morning when my alarm clock sounded, I hit the snooze (小睡) button, just 10 more minutes. Then 10 minutes later, another 10 minutes. That’s why I am always late for school.”
“Don’t worry. We’re all here to help you,” Mrs. Johnson said, offering a comforting smile.

W: Good afternoon and welcome to Seattle Houseboat Tours. My name’s Elizabeth Jones and I’m your guide today. This is my houseboat Moonlight. Before we go on board, I’d like to give you a little background information. Seattle has one of the largest numbers of houseboats in the U.S. — about 500 of them in fact. That’s quite a high number and shows how popular houseboat living is here. We’re at the southern end of Lake Union right now. As you have probably seen already, this is a lively area with restaurants and shops and cafes. During our one-hour tour you’ll see a number of houseboats. People can pay millions of dollars for the biggest of these. Some of them are quite amazing and have two or three floors. My own is one of the smallest boats, but I still have plenty of room, as you’ll see when I show you around. My living area includes one bedroom with a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. I also have electricity, running water and network, so I really do have everything I need. You may be interested to know that I’m writing a book on the history of houseboats in the city, and this should be on sale from early July. Well, thank you for listening so far. Now let’s move into the boat and start the tour.

After the talk, Mrs. Johnson, along with Timmy’s classmates, came up with a plan to help him. They decided to create a schedule where a different classmate would call Timmy each morning to make sure he was awake. Additionally, they organized a morning study group that met half an hour before class started, giving Timmy an extra reason to arrive early. Mrs. Johnson also suggested a reward system: For every week Timmy was on time, he would earn a star, and a certain number of stars would earn him a small prize. They stuck to the plan day in and day out.
Soon Timmy’s change was obvious. The morning calls from his classmates not only woke him up but also made him feel cared for and part of a community. The routine helped him get more organized, and slowly he was no longer late. His classmates cheered for every star he earned, and Mrs. Johnson’s encouragement motivated him further. Timmy’s self-esteem grew as he no longer felt the embarrassment of being late. This newfound sense of responsibility and community support transformed not just his morning routine but his overall attitude towards school and learning.
