Over the past few decades, technology has advanced at an unprecedented rate, revolutionizing industries and shaping new ways of life. 6
According to the International Telecommunication Union, a key advocate of technological advancement, the rapid growth of technology has significantly improved the quality of life in numerous communities. It cites studies that show the integration of technology into daily lives has led to increased efficiency, more access to information, and even progress in healthcare in numerous regions. 7
Those who embrace technological progress argue that it creates new opportunities for individuals and businesses alike. For instance, farmers in remote areas can now access real-time market information and weather updates through smartphones, enabling them to make more informed decisions about their crops. Additionally, small businesses can expand their reach globally through online platforms. 8 They argue that while technology may bring benefits to some, it often expands the difference between the technologically informed and the digitally excluded. Studies conducted by organizations like the United Nations Development Programme reveal that many individuals, particularly those in developing regions or with limited resources, lag behind in accessing and utilizing technological advancements. 9
Furthermore, critics fear that the unchecked growth of technology may have negative impacts on society and the environment. For example, the rise of social media and the internet has led to an increase in cyberbullying, privacy concerns, and the spread of misinformation. Moreover, the overuse of technology may contribute to do-nothing lifestyles and other health issues.

Tips on how to be a good roommate
It can be a wonderful and satisfying experience to have roommates to share a home with. Living with others can often help you develop close relationships and learn some life skills along the way. But being a good roommate is more than just making your rent payments on time. 11 . Here are some tips on how to be a good roommate.
12
Any effective roommate relationship is built on respect. Just like in any other healthy relationship, roommates need to appreciate and respect one another’s boundaries and personal space. But since at least initially roommates are total strangers, it is worthwhile to spend some time talking about and deciding on ground rules for noise levels, cleaning tasks, and shared resources.
Communicate honestly
13 . Create an open-door policy where roommates can feel free to voice their worries, expectations, and feedback. Hold house meetings on a regular basis where all important information is shared and addressed. This helps to make sure that no problem will fall between the cracks and go unattended.
Keep things clean and organized
Nothing is more important than keeping your shared spaces clean and organized. Take the time to clean up after yourself and respect each other’s standards of cleanliness. Keep shared areas like bathrooms and kitchens clean. 14 .
Be considerate of your roommate’s needs
Being considerate of your roommate’s schedule, preferences, and routines is part of living with them. It is wise to be mindful of noise levels, especially when one roommate is working or sleeping. 15 . For example, you can offer to pick up groceries or help with chores around the house.

The storms in our lives often leave behind gifts if we open our eyes to see them. As the skies clear and you start to emerge from the loss, look for the silver linings. 16
Going through difficulties requires courage and determination. You have to dig deep and find the strength you didn’t know you possessed to overcome the challenges. 17 That self-knowledge and confidence in your abilities will serve you well going forward.
Coming out the other side of trouble sometimes gives you a fresh outlook. Priorities shift. 18 You have a deeper appreciation for life’s simple moments and clarity about what matters. Use that insight to guide your choices and cherish each day. 19 The old way of doing things no longer works, so you must rebuild and reimagine your life. Though change is hard, it opens up possibilities for new growth and exciting adventures. Look at this as a chance for a fresh start. You can pursue new dreams or make along-wished-for switch in your situation. The future is unwritten.
Your struggles and pain have given you understanding for what others maybe going through in their own lives. You now recognize the suffering of people around you and desire to help ease their burdens. Use your experience to be there for friends and family members facing difficulties. 20 Your sympathy can make a real difference.

The Surprising Strength of “Weak” Social Ties
It’s long been known that a community of supportive relationships improves our quality of life and can even help us recover from illness. 21 . Regularly interacting with a wide variety of social ties, both “weak” and “strong”, enhances our satisfaction. A rich diversity of ties provides more significant benefits to well-being, and “weak” social ties can prove just as important to life satisfaction as core, or “strong” ties. 22 . There you can find the people who cheer, serve, support, comfort, educate, motivate, and entertain you.
Claire gets cheered up by going to the library and chatting with her favorite librarian every week. Sherry gets great joy from her Sunday breakfasts at a local diner because the manager and her favorite waitress are nice to her. 23 . I remember discussing Anna Karenina on an airplane with a wise economics professor, and finding meaningful moments of joy with street musicians and performers.
24 . When you show kindness to a stranger, your seemingly small act might stay in their memory as a source of support and positivity. Everyone needs to feel significant in the eyes of another. You could be that person for someone in your extended circle. That’s why it’s so important to reach out to people around you, especially when they’re going through hard times.
When we feel blue or lonely, we tend to turn down social engagements, either to avoid the imagined embarrassment of being the only sad person in a group or because socializing with people we don’t know well can be awkward at first. 25 . Being open to both our strong and weak ties allows us to benefit from the comfort, connection, and community they provide.
A. All of those connections matter — and so do you

C. Even those we meet only once can leave a lasting impression

E. Interacting with the weak ties encourages us to behave more professionally

We try to escape from the hurt and pain by pretending it doesn’t exist, but although we can try this as we want, in the end, we can’t hide from ourselves. 26 The items listed below are four ways you can open your heart more fully and completely.
Breathe into pain
Whenever a painful situation arises in your life, try to embrace it instead of running away or trying to mask the hurt. 27 When we run away from sadness that’s unfolding in our lives, it will get stronger and more real.
Ask your heart what it wants
We’re often confused at the next step to take, making pros and cons lists until our eyes bleed and our brains are sore. Instead of always taking this approach, what if we take a few deep breaths then ask, “Heart, what decision should I make here What action feels the most right ” 28
Accept your shadow
Many of us who are on the personal development path get caught up in embracing characteristics we want to have, like happiness, compassion, love, and passion. In this process we end up losing parts of ourselves that make us whole. Try asking yourself a question: 29 Once you’re a little clearer about what exactly you’ve been hiding from yourself, it will get easier to shine your light on it.
Get outside of yourself
After you’ve explored the depths of yourself, you come away with a new understanding. Now, it’s time to share that— not through telling others, but through being with others. Lose yourself in the beauty of others; see what they can teach you about yourself.
30 Take one at a time, determine which works best for you, and see what you can discover.
A. What else can I do to improve myself
B. Is there anything I’m hiding from myself
C. Trying to escape is a good way to protect ourselves.
D. See what comes up, then engage and evaluate the outcome.
E. When sadness strikes, take a deep breath and lean into it.
F. Remember, there’s no need to do every one of these at the same time.
G. We need to learn to open our hearts to the potentials of life and let the world soften us.

For most of history, people lived in small groups of up to 150 people. Then villages and small towns developed, offering safety and support through the sharing of resources. As time passed, urban living brought additional advantages such as better jobs, schools and healthcare. Larger towns also gave people more chances to meet and interact. This is important. 31
Today, over half of the world’s population currently lives in towns and cities. But this has resulted in a strange paradox (悖论). Although social opportunities are one reason people choose to live in large cities, research suggests that city life can be lonely. 32 People from all over the world can join online communities and make virtual friends without leaving their home.
The development of virtual communities can be traced back to the 1860s. Back then, telegraph operators exchanged messages and gradually formed friendships over long distances. 33
Later, in the 1960s, radios started to provide a means of short-distance communication and developed communities with their own unique language and usernames.
34 Computers were not very powerful yet, so people could post messages and share news and stories but not music or photos. Still, people loved being able to make friends online and then hang out with them. As technology became more powerful, online communities for fun, education and business emerged, where people could explore a virtual 3D world, have online lessons, and even buy things with virtual money.
These days, there are thousands of virtual communities and that number keeps growing. Many people believe they will become more important. 35 Particularly, they’re concerned that posting personal information online might lead to a loss of privacy. So perhaps the future will be more like the past. People will spend most of their time in real communities.
A. This trend, however, is not likely to continue.
B. As Aristotle said, the nature of humans is to be social.
C. That may explain why virtual communities are so popular.
D. The first popular online communities developed in the 1980s.
E. Before cell phones existed, radio was an easy way to communicate.
F. Nevertheless, others worry about problems with these communities.
G. This is among the earliest examples of virtual community interactions.

The holidays can be a divisive season. Because the holidays are full of merriness, some love them. Others can feel troubled by them, affected by the financial pressure and family gatherings often accompanying the holidays. 36 So, what can you do if you’re feeling like that Roll your sleeves up. We’re going to get real, make a plan and enjoy the holiday atmosphere.
37 This may be obvious for many— you may feel triggered owing to the stress of social events or gift-giving. But others may have a harder time detecting what is going on.
Begin tracking how you’re feeling on the day-to-day life. You can keep a journal or take a brief walk where you can reflect at the end of your day. Doing this lets you see a pattern of what may be activating your negative feelings.
After getting your triggers written down, let’s make a plan. If it is money fueling the discomfort, let’s strategize how you can cut down the financial expectations. You can select a thoughtful low-cost decoration or a bunch of flowers. 38 Don’t be afraid to let them know your financial condition. If holiday gatherings are extremely stressful, it is time to see how this can shift. Avoiding holiday gatherings altogether isn’t possible for most. However, you can consider an excuse that can serve as a reason to leave early. 39
Rethink how to love yourself rather than care for others too much. If you have to be with someone, are you at risk of yourself because of arguments or conflicts 40 Minimizing the time you spend with them is a wise choice.
A. Keep track of your daily actions.
B. It will help you get through the tense situation.
C. Hosting a gathering can be another costly issue.
D. Feeling joyless during the holidays can be really awful.
E. You can also offer meaningful time spent with loved ones.
F. The truth is that it is hard to engage with people who hurt you.
G. Let’s begin by identifying what is causing you the intense anxiety.
9
Waking up at the crack of dawn and going for a run might feel awful when you start trying to make it a habit. Weaving a significant new activity such as this into your regular routine obviously takes determination and time. 41
One popular idea suggests that it takes 21 days to solidify a habit. People tend to feel extra motivated to start a new habit or kick an old one. 42 Yet every January 21 very few people can boast that they have kept their resolutions.
Everyone has a unique habit-building timeline. 43 Experts suggest various individualized ways to practice frequently, which eventually turn a task into an unconscious habit.
44 Teaching yourself a completely new skill or process obviously takes longer than remembering to drink more water in the morning. A 2015 study found that new gym-goers had to exercise at least four times a week for six weeks in order to develop an exercise habit. The results showed that creating a handwashing habit took a few weeks. 45 Anyway, handwashing is less complex and offers more opportunities to practice.
The researchers also suggested that habit formation depends on the effort that a person puts into practicing an activity and on the presence of environmental cues that would remind them to carry out the behavior.
A. The type of activity is also a factor.
B. The strategies of activity impact the way.
C. People want to form a habit of exercising regularly.
D. But how much time is really needed to make that habit stick
E. It might sound easily reachable to make a resolution on New Year’s Day.
F. By comparison, it took half a year for people to develop an exercise habit.
G. However long it is for any individual, repetition is the key to making it work.
10
How many times have you checked your tickets, money and passport before you set off Well, maybe add a note about food hygiene (卫生), too, as there are lots of food-borne hazards (危害) to be mindful of when you travel.
Taking precautions doesn’t mean ignoring local food, culture and customs. 46 Food- and water-related illnesses can vary from a touch of mild traveller’s stomach to more serious infections. 47 You need to check up on the destinations to see if there are any common food-related issues you need to know about.
In countries with doubtful water quality, avoid ice and — if you have no other option—drink only unopened bottled water. Better still, take a reusable filtered (过滤) water bottle so that you can drink the local water safely and not add to the mountain of single-use plastic waste. 48 Avoid any raw meat, fish, shellfish or eggs if you have any doubts, including under-cooked foods or rare-cooked meats. When eating fruits and vegetables, they need to be thoroughly cooked, and avoid salads that may be washed with polluted water. 49
If you’re being offered buffet food or shared plates, think about how long that food has been sitting in the heat. It doesn’t take long at all for bacteria to multiply at alarming rates on food, so where possible, choose refrigerated dishes or food that is piping hot.
50 If the thought crosses your mind about whether something is safe to consume, it’s wise to assume it isn’t.
A. Avoiding them is all in the planning.
B. My guiding principle is: if in doubt, leave it out.
C. Wash your hands even more frequently than normal.
D. Don’t drink straight from fountains, hotel room taps, or streams.
E. Raw fruits with thick peels are okay if you prepare them yourself.
F. Trying local food is joyful, but it pays to know which dishes to avoid.
