B
I am, not for the first time, writing a book. The difference with this book is that I will actually finish writing it without being interrupted.
Last week I left Melbourne to stay for a month at a house next to the beach; just me, my dog and my laptop. It’s an unspeakable luxury having what Virginia Woolf described over 90 years ago as the two things a woman needs for writing: a room of her own and enough money to support herself.
My room is small and there is nothing distracting me. No iPad games, no bar next door, no kids, no unpaid bills, no struggling to pay the rent; just silence and a beach to walk on when I need to clear my head. Some people can and have written books in rooms full of all those things. I could not.
Since I arrived, I’ve turned off my phone and in the absence of alarms I wake up early, make breakfast and go for a walk on the beach to sort out my thoughts on the writing I did the day before and how it ties in with what I want to write today.
When I come back, I write, uninterrupted, for hours. When it’s time to stop, I can eat, nap, read or lie on the ground and stare at the sky. Then I do hours of editing and researching for the next day. These are my days in the room of my own.
My colleague wrote about the guilt and freedom of leaving all your responsibilities behind and how surprising it is to discover how much you can do when you have a room of your own. It’s not something I’ve done for years. Being a single parent is tiring, rewarding and irritating all at once and it leaves very little room for creativity or pondering.
People rarely have freedom to pursue creative dreams. I’ve worked hard, and getting here gave me the opportunity.
Writing is a joy and incredibly hard work. I don’t know if the book will be a success, but I do know how successful I will feel when I’ve finished it and how lucky I am that I will be able to be here in this room of my own.
24.Why did the author leave Melbourne
A.She wanted to live near the seashore. B.She wanted to have some leisure time.

A.She felt regretful to leave her family. B.She felt lonely and missed Melbourne.

27.What’s the purpose of this passage
A.To show how to write a book independently.
B.To share her story and thoughts on living alone.
C.To explain how Virginia Woolf has affected her life.
D.To make suggestions about how to pursue dreams freely.
根据第一段中“The difference with this book is that I will actually finish writing it without being interrupted.(这本书的不同之处在于,我会在不被打断的情况下把它写完)”以及第二段中“Last week I left Melbourne to stay for a month at a house next to the beach; just me, my dog and my laptop.(上周我离开墨尔本,在海边的一所房子里住了一个月;只有我,我的狗和我的笔记本电脑)”可知,作者离开墨尔本是因为她下定决心完成她的写作。故选D。
根据第二段中“It’s an unspeakable luxury having what Virginia Woolf described over 90 years ago as the two things a woman needs for writing: a room of her own and enough money to support herself.(90多年前,弗吉尼亚·伍尔芙称,拥有一个女人写作所需要的两样东西是一种难以言喻的奢侈:一间自己的房间和足够的钱养活自己)”可推知,作者在第二段中提到了弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫是为了强调有一个单独房子来完成写作。故选D。
根据第三段中“My room is small and there is nothing distracting me. No iPad games, no bar next door, no kids, no unpaid bills, no struggling to pay the rent; just silence and a beach to walk on when I need to clear my head.(我的房间很小,没有什么能让我分心。没有iPad游戏,没有隔壁的酒吧,没有孩子,没有未付的账单,没有为付房租而挣扎;当我需要理清思绪的时候,只有安静和沙滩)”可知,作者呆在房间里时,她喜欢这种简单,感觉很轻松。故选C。
27.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“My colleague wrote about the guilt and freedom of leaving all your responsibilities behind and how surprising it is to discover how much you can do when you have a room of your own. It’s not something I’ve done for years. Being a single parent is tiring, rewarding and irritating all at once and it leaves very little room for creativity or pondering.(我的同事写了关于放下所有责任的内疚和自由,以及当你发现自己有一间自己的房间时可以做很多事情是多么令人惊讶。这不是我多年来做的事。做一个单亲妈妈是一件累人的、有回报的、令人恼火的事情,它留给我们的创造和思考的空间非常小)”结合主要讲述了作者为了写作在海边的一所房子里住了一个月,作者在此期间感到很轻松,认为独自生活是一件幸事。可推知,这篇文章的目的是分享她独自生活的故事和想法。故选B。
C
You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it.
When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a fish—eradicating their hunger—and only then teach them to fish. Far too often, people ignore this common sense first step. They see someone who is struggling, and they rush to offer wisdom. “Let me tell you what I’d do in your position,” a well-meaning individual might offer.
But few of us understand the anxiety, confusion and uncertainty that come with overwhelming need. People meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation
Rushing to offer a struggling person long-term advice is a waste of time. Instead, it makes far more sense to help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach a new skill.
But how do we know whether a person needs a fish before a fishing lesson Two things: One is the ability to pay attention. We need to know whether the other person is open and receptive, or looking at the world through narrowed eyes You can’t just take their words but have to look at how the person acts and what they don’t say. The other is empathy (共情). The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.
28.What is the function of the first paragraph
A.To illustrate a concept. B.To introduce the background.
C.To bring in a new viewpoint. D.To put up an example.
29.What does the underlined word “eradicating” mean in paragraph 2
A.Getting rid of. B.Paying attention to.
C.Making up for. D.Putting up with.
30.What should we do first for those struggling person
A.Get them to think straight.
B.Teach them a new skill.
C.Give them long term advice.
D.help regain their emotional balance.
31.Which does the author probably agree with according to the last paragraph
A.Live and learn.
B.Put yourself in others’ shoes.
C.Never teach a fish to swim.
D.Don’t teach old dogs new tricks.
【答案】28.C 29.A 30.D 31.B
根据第一段“You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it. (你以前听过一句中国古话:授之以鱼不如授之以渔。你现在甚至可能在点头表示同意。然而,我们可以有一个不同的理解。)”可知,第一段是为了引入新的观点——对“授之以鱼不如授之以渔”的不同理解,故选C。
29.词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文“When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a fish (当一个人在挨饿的时候,那不是给他灌输知识的时候,而是先给他一条鱼)”可知,当一个人挨饿时,先给他一条鱼,这样能消除他的饥饿,由此可知,划线单词eradicating意为“消除”,与A项“Getting rid of. (摆脱)”意思相近,故选A。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中“People meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation (遇到个人灾难的人没有直接思考的能力。他们的神经可能会受到刺激。他们的信心可能根本不存在。你能想象处在那种情况下会是什么样子吗?)”和第四段中“Instead, it makes far more sense to help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach a new skill. (相反,帮助他们恢复情绪平衡更有意义。一旦他们的耳朵,心灵和头脑打开,你将有机会教一个新的技能)”可知,那些处在灾难中的人们没有信心,所以为了帮助他们,我们首先要做的是帮助他们恢复情绪,即增强他们的信心,故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The other is empathy (共情).The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson. (另一个是共情。你越成功,就越难想象成为失败的人是什么样子。试着在授之以渔课之前为情感接受创造一个安全的环境)”可知,作者建议我们要产生共情,即要换位思考,站在别人的角度考虑。故选B。
D
When I was a child, I always wanted to be a superhero. I wanted to save the world and make everyone happy. But I knew that I’d need superpowers to make my dreams come true. So I used to embark on these imaginary journeys to find intergalactic (星系之间的) objects from planet Krypton, but didn’t yield much result. When I grew up and realized that science fiction was not a good source for superpowers, I decided instead to embark on a journey of real science, to find a more useful truth.
I started my journey in California, with a UC Berkeley 30-year longitudinal study that examined the photos of students in an old yearbook, and tried to measure their success and well-being throughout their life.By measuring the students’ smiles, researchers were able to predict how fulfilling and long-lasting a subject’s marriage would be, how well they would score on standardized tests of well-being, and how inspiring they would be to others.
Another aha moment came from a 2010 Wayne State University span research project that looked into pre-1950s baseball cards of Major League players. The researchers found that the span of a player’s smile could actually assist to predict the span of his life. Players who didn’t smile in their pictures lived an average of only 72.9 years, while players with beaming smiles lived an average of almost 80 years.
British researchers found that one smile can generate the same level of brain stimulation as up to 2,000 bars of chocolate. Wait — The same study found that smiling is as stimulating as receiving up to 16,000 in cash. That’s like $25,000 a smile. It’s not bad. And think about it this way: 25,000 times 400 — children smile as many as 400 times per day — quite a few kids out there feel like Mark Zuckerberg every day.
So whenever you want to tap into a superpower that will help you and everyone around you live a longer, healthier, happier life, smile.
32.Why did the author shift to pursuing scientific research
A.Because he discovered galactic objects during childhood.
B.Because he realized sci-fi couldn’t bring superpowers.
C.Because he dreamed of global happiness since youth.
D.Because he embarked on these fictional journeys.
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A.Every child smiles 400 times per day.
B.Kids who smile are as rich as Zukerberg.
C.Smiling is equal to eating 2,000 bars of chocolate.
D.Smiling can gain stimulation alike receiving cash.
34.What’s the author’s attitude towards the effect of smiles on people
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Neutral. D.Indifferent.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.The journey to find the truth.
B.The hidden power of smiling.
C.The secret to a long and healthy life.
D.The significance of superhero studies.

Emotional energy is a relatively new term to describe our vitality (活力). 36 If we feel that some situations drain (耗尽) us, then it’s because they take away all our vitality in matters that are insignificant, but ones that do require effort. They’re situations that only distract us from what’s truly important, and from the things that enrich us. Let’s learn to identify them and avoid them.
Arguments about insignificant issues
A debate is a great opportunity to present your own points of view and learn from other’s opinions. However, something very different happens when two people get into a pointless argument. 37
Gossip
38 . This sort of curiosity is no more than a sign of a lack of identity. Whoever gossips about others looks for themselves in other people. The thing is, they just can’t find themselves.
Worrying over and over again
One of the situations that drain our emotional energy is unstoppable doubt. This is when we think and think but only come up with “ifs” and “buts”. We try to find the right answer or make the right decision just by reflection. 39
Need for approval
We’re constantly trying to get other people’s approval. 40 Instead of investing time to explore who we are, whether others like us or not, we just spend our time doing things that other people want us to do. Generally, people either accept you or they don’t, and sometimes for reasons that are completely beyond your control.

37.上文“A debate is a great opportunity to present your own points of view and learn from other’s opinions. However, something very different happens when two people get into a pointless argument.(辩论是一个很好的机会来展示自己的观点,并从别人的观点中学习。
Sticking our noses into other’s private lives与标题Gossip照应。故选F。
40.空前“We’re constantly trying to get other people’s approval.(我们总是试图得到别人的认可)”表示试图得到别人的认可是我们一直在做的事情,C选项“这样做,我们只是在欺骗自己”指出这样做的问题,句中的this指代上文中to get other people’s approval,且下文“Generally, people either accept you or they don’t, and sometimes for reasons that are completely beyond your control.(一般来说,人们要么接受你,要么不接受你,有时是因为你完全无法控制的原因)”对C项做出解释,说明别人的认可是无法掌控的,因此,这种做法是自欺欺人。故选C。

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) several times in previous years because he had difficulty controlling his anger. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions by calling out their names. Unfortunately, every time I called Tyler’s name, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the school year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I could usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly while paying attention. By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past: about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler kept interrupting me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own ” When I said that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and shouted at me. I can’t remember what he said but he used bad words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he was told not to come to school for a week.
This was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was off school was wonderful. We achieved a lot as a class. However, he would soon be back, and I was worried about his return.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him.

A spark of surprise flashed across his face.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past few days, I had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to myself that maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the middle of class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame, “I should have learned to control myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one.

C.The secret to a long and healthy life.

A.We spend so much time worrying about things that it blurs our vision of life.
B.The only purpose of it is to “beat the other person”, and express their own points of view.
C.By doing this we’re just cheating ourselves.
D.Vitality is the strength that we have before tiredness sets in.
E.We go on and on about the same problem, without actually doing anything to solve it.
F.Sticking our noses into other’s private lives, instead of our own, drains our emotional energy.
G.However, we forget that many answers come only when we combine thought and action.
